We chatted with filmmakers Dara Resnik and James Takata about their upcoming film California Scenario, a drama exploring intergenerational trauma and resilience within diverse Californian families. Inspired by James' family history and Isamu Noguchi's sculptural garden of the same name, the story weaves past and present narratives, addressing themes like Japanese American internment, the Holocaust, and the enduring legacy of trauma. Dara and James shared their experiences as collaborators, the importance of representation in storytelling, and the power of community in bringing authentic narratives to life.We had the chance to talk to James and Dara about how they met (thank you very much Jon Huertas), and how they work together - especially as two people who have been through a divorce and done a lot of healing. Set against the backdrop of Noguchi's iconic installation, this film is a heartfelt exploration of identity, healing, and the ties that bind families across generations. To support California Scenario, consider contributing to the film's fundraising efforts, sharing its mission, or spreading the word through interviews and features. Together, we can help bring this meaningful story to the screen.Donate to California Scenario here: https://seedandspark.com/fund/californiascenario#storyMentioned in this episode:Join the Fresh Starts Collective!Whether you're an ambitious entrepreneur, a dedicated student, a heads down writer or simply striving to achieve your professional goals, the Fresh Starts Collective is here for you. THIS IS US -- “Taboo" Episode 607 -- Pictured: (l-r) Jon Huertas as Miguel, Justin Hartley as Kevin -- (Photo by: Ron Batzdorff/NBC) We can't have a final season of This Is Us without the annual Thanksgiving tradition of unleashing fresh torrents of drama onto the audience. Kate and Toby - Low patience and high tension all shaping up to give the audience a good reason to feel ok about their upcoming split. It's gotta be pretty bad if you have to take off the Pilgrim Rick hat, Toby. Kevin - Dude needs to lose that chip on his shoulder with Miguel. And consider guitar lessons. Randall - Be on the lookout for unwanted news from Deja about Malik, but really Randall's best contribution to the episode was probably bringing Beth to dinner. Rebecca - What IS in that legendary pie? Caroline and Paul discuss these and MANY more in this week's podcast! Jon Huertas joins America's Podcaster, Kurt Caceres, for the final curtain call of the trilogy. They immediately delve into the ideology that African American's are in every fabric and every film and TV show in America. But with a lower demographic than Latinos, who are the one's standing on the sidelines? And why? This isn't speculation or opinion, this is fact, from Latinos whom have worked their way to the top of the Hollywood industry. An industry that looks at the men as a threat, and the Latina female as someone with whom they want to indulge in sex. The problem is that Latinos don't find solidarity in a race or color, but in the country of their origin, which is the root of the divide. African American's have never had this problem, hence their influx and climb to the top of the Hollywood ladder. Who is mowing lawns, cleaning bathrooms and picking lettuce? As Jon and Kurt have experienced in Hollywood when they try and negotiate a deal, "oh they don't want the part bad enough, we'll take another just like them". Latino's are perceived as expendable in America, and with a demographic their size, once they stand in solidarity, America will never be the same. XX Please Follow and Subscribe to the Podcast. Our special guest is actor Jon Huertas who plays Miguel in the award winning critically acclaimed NBC drama series "This Is Us". In an exclusive interview we talk to Jon about the current fifth season and how the show is tackling real world issues like the global pandemic and Black Lives Matter. Jon also talks to us about working on set during COVID-19, transforming into older Miguel through prosthetics, working closely with Mandy Moore, Sterling K. Brown and the rest of the cast and more. We also chat with Jon about the election, racism that he has encountered in his life and his Venice Beach restaurant Clutch! Don't miss this interview!
One of the stars of the award winning hit shows, Castle and This is Us, sits again with America's Podcaster, Kurt Caceres. He is THE Jon Huertas, and he tells the story behind saying the line "the canvas came up empty" a few hundred times during his tenure on Castle and how he had to get creative to make the dialogue interesting and keep the job exciting. Actors need to think outside the box because often times dialogue is exposition without any depth or deep character development. He reveals how he won the job on This is Us. He was doing a chemistry read with the lead of another hit show, One Day at a Time, Justina Machado, and working with the legendary Norman Lear, when the casting director saw his work and asked him last minute to meet NBC executives. He won the part, as he says, "by thinking outside the box and making interesting choices" different from the other 10 men vying for the same role. It's not about the words on the page, it's about what each actor brings to the words that is truly unique only to themselves. There is no one like him. There is only one Jon Huertas. Jon Huertas sits with America's Podcaster, Kurt Caceres, to talk about his hit song, Champion, and his already illustrious career as an actor. He is best known for playing Javier Esposito on the hit show Castle, and currently stars in the bigger hit show, This is Us, as Miguel Rivas. Jon's success didn't happen over night, and he shares his struggles coming up the ranks through Hollywood. He personifies work ethic and dedication whilst also making sure that actors realize the importance of how they are perceived within and out of the industry. "Be who you want to be seen as", says Jon, "Present yourself as a working actor". If you let Producers and Directors see you around town waiting tables or catering their kids Bat Mitzvah, they will never see you as an actor, there will be no respect. This is why Jon earned the name "Rat Pack", because he would dress up in nice suits and sneak his way into the biggest Hollywood parties and premieres, pretending to be delivering Milk. Once inside, he'd leave the Milk in the back and proceed to mingle with the biggest players in Hollywood and they saw him as a big player himself. Hollywood is a game, you gotta know how to play it, be your own Champion. XX Please Follow and Subscribe to the Podcast. This week's ATA is entitled Animation Domination because like Fox's Sunday Night Lineup the majority of this podcast features reviews on two episodes of the Cartoon Network Animated Series' Young Justice and ThunderCats. However, for those of you who might not be animation fans you're not going to want to pass this edition of ATA up since our other favorite shows being on hiatus gave us the opportunity to have an extended discussion on the Castle episode Kill Shot where Staina Katic as Beckett and Jon Huertas gave their best performances of the series.
