Money isn't always the answer - at least not as it's normally recognized (hard capital). However, full-spectrum capital plays a central role in the Anti-Fragile Wealth Production Engine, which acknowledges and quantifies other forms of capital necessary for community revival. The discussion opens with a story about how Ed Daniel's investment in attention capital helped a locally-focused advocacy effort rapidly blossom. Eddie Daniels, a bus operator for a West Virginia school district, proposed the county implement a “Farm to School” program that help to ensure no children go hungry. says Ed: “As I drive the school bus, one of the things I'm seeing at the stops is grandparents,” Daniels said. “They are on a fixed income and may not have the money to feed these kids, so I am trying to implement a program with the Food and Farm Coalition called ‘Farm to School.' We are going to invite farmers in the area, and the (agriculture) programs in the schools, to grow some food for your students here in Randolph County.” In this example and others, Ruth Glendinning and Kent Dahlgren discuss how an investment of attention capital inspires the creation of relationships which magnifies the value of the time invested, building trust, and unlocking normally-overlooked pockets of wisdom, which flowers as a benefit that cannot be purchased with cash. In this episode, building upon that which was discussed in the prior "Placeholder to Place-maker" podcast episode on alternative and complementary currencies, Ruth and Kent talk about how an investment in five forms of soft capital accelerate a community advocate's return on investment: Attention capital Relationship capital Time capital Trust capital ("hard to earn, easy to lose, and impossible to buy") Wisdom capital These discussions lay the foundation for upcoming topics on how the Anti-Fragile Wealth Production Engine, built upon the Community Activation App by 214 Alpha, encourage those who are naturally-generous to help bootstrap a hyper-local economy. This same hyper-local economy, in turn, soon delivers a self-funded economic revival, using money which normally remains "under the table," and leaves in its wake a self-governing community, using leadership which was sourced and activated from within the community itself.

Phoenix-based saxophonist/composer/educator Mary Petrich stopped by the VJC Q&T podcast in late February for a spirited conversation with host Russell Schmidt. He got his first clarinet at the age of seven—and when his family moved to New Orleans five years later, Agid discovered jazz. After attending Louis Armstrong Jazz Camp, where he learned from legendary musicians Alvin Batiste, Kidd Jordan, and Clyde Kerr, Agid was accepted to the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA). Here, Batiste became his mentor. “Alvin Batiste once told me that the clarinet is also like a jealous mistress, and the moment you don't give her the attention she wants, she becomes spiteful and unruly,” Agid remembers. Agid's NOCCA classmates included Grammy-nominated trombonist and trumpet player Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews, Grammy-nominated trumpet player Christian Scott, and pianist Jonathan Batiste. In 2005, NOCCA awarded Agid a grant to study with clarinetist Eddie Daniels at Daniels' home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. While earning his bachelor's degree in clarinet performance from Loyola University New Orleans, Agid dove into performing. In addition to playing alongside Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra, the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, and Kristina Morales, he leads the Gregory Agid Quartet and performs regularly in the New Orleans area, Nationally, and Internationally. Agid graduated from Loyola in 2010, and released his debut album, Mystery Blues, in 2013. The following year, he completed his master's degree in music at the University of New Orleans. The Library's Larry Appelbaum talks with musicians Eddie Daniels and Roger Kellaway on jazz and the American songbook. Speaker Biography: American tenor saxophonist and clarinetist Edddie Daniels took up alto saxophone at the age of nine, began doubling on tenor saxophone and clarinet about three years later, and attended the High School of the Performing Arts in New York. After graduating from Julliard, Daniels became a founding member of the Thad Jones Mel Lewis Orchestra (with which he remained for six years); he also won first prize as a saxophonist at the International Jazz Competition in Vienna, recorded with Friedrich Gulda, and made his first recording as a leader. After years spent in recording studios and in television and theater orchestras, Daniels received a grant from the NEA in 1986, and at this point in his career he sold his saxophones, ceased doubling as a flutist, and focused solely on clarinet. He has continued to work in both classical and jazz circles and he remains one of the most technically gifted clarinetists in jazz. Speaker Biography: American pianist, arranger, and composer Roger Kellaway learned piano as a child, became interested in jazz through the recordings of George Shearing, and taught himself to play double bass. He studied piano, double bass, and composition at the New England Conservatory (1957???9), and later worked with Al Cohn and Zoot Sims, Clark Terry, Bob Brookmeyer, Ben Webster, Wes Montgomery and Sonny Rollins (1966). In 1966, Kellaway moved to Los Angeles to play in Don Ellis's big band, and he later worked as a music director for the popular singer Bobby Darin. During the same period he toured with Joni Mitchell, and recorded with Carmen McRae, for whom he also wrote arrangements and led a backup group. Speaker Biography: Larry Appelbaum is aSenior Music Reference Librarian and jazz specialist in the Music Division at the Library of Congress. As a former supervisor of the Library's Magnetic Recording Laboratory, he transferred, edited and mastered many classical, jazz and folk recordings for commercial release. As a critic, he is a contributor to the books "Jazz: The First Century" (William Morrow, 2000) and "The Encyclopedia of Radio" (Museum of Broadcast Communications 2003). He writes regularly for JazzTimes and other magazines and websites around the world, curates a jazz film series, and is a long time radio host on WPFW-FM in Washington D.C. Daniels played the fest with many of the same musicians who appear on his 2-CD live album Homecoming (IPO Recordings, 2007). Daniels got his start as a saxophonist with the Thad Jones & Mel Lewis big band, and then launched a successful solo career that took the clarinet to new heights. He started performing on saxophone again in 2005 and now uses both instruments in his sets. During the interview, you'll hear Daniels receive a fateful phone call that changes the nature of his performance at the festival.
