“Women serving in the U.S. military are more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire in Iraq.”On 19 July 2005, Private First Class LaVena Lynn Johnson was found dead in a contractor's tent on an Army base in Balad, Iraq. He started asking questions. What followed were years of administrative red tape and agonizing heartache for the Johnson family. In the waning days of 2003, a mysterious entity would begin a short-lived campaign of terror.Using the name "Fallen Angel," this mysterious group or individual sent two letters - one without a destination and the other addressed to the White House - which demanded an end to upcoming trucking regulations. Months later, trace amounts of ricin would be found in the Washington D.C. mailroom of the Senate Majority Leader, and many believed "Fallen Angel" to be responsible. Between 1934 and 1938, at least 13 men and women were murdered in or around Cleveland's Kingsbury Run.Dubbed “the Cleveland Torso Killer,” “the Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run,” and less commonly “The Headhunter,” the murderer was known for expertly decapitating and dismembering his victims before dumping their body parts in various areas around Cleveland's eastside. As Cleveland's Public Safety Director, famed Prohibition-era detective Eliot Ness drove an exhaustive investigation during which over 5000 people were interviewed. Though he was sure he found the person responsible, he never made an arrest. "I would not consider him a sociopath because the thing he is doing is almost bizarre, and on a psychotic level..."Between October and November of 1977, a series of car bombs would kill and injure multiple people in eastern Missouri. The victims were middle-class individuals living in apartment buildings in southern St. Louis County, who appeared to have no connection to one another. As federal investigators began to look into these separate-yet-similar explosions, they began to question whether someone close to the victims was attempted to disguise their true motivations. However, as they'd find, the truth would remain shielded by this culprit's chaotic nature...Episode hosted, researched, written, and produced by Micheal WhelanOriginal music created by Micheal Whelan through Amper MusicTheme music created and composed by Ailsa TravesProducers: Roberta Janson, Ben Krokum, Gabriella Bromley, Steven Wilson, Quil Carter, Travis Scsepko, Laura Hannan, Bryan Hall, Damion Moore, Scott Meesey, Amy Hampton, Scott Patzold, Marie Vanglund, Astrid Kneier, Aimee McGregor, Jo Wong, Sara Moscaritolo, Sydney Scotton, Thomas Ahearn, Marion Welsh, Patrick Laakso, Rebecca O'Sullivan, Meadow Landry, Tatum Bautista, Sally Ranford, Kevin McCracken, Ruth Durbin, Michele Watson, Jared Midwood, Teunia Elzinga, Ryan Green, Jacinda C., Stephanie Joyner, Cherish Brady, and LaurenLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast and others, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerThis episode is sponsored by BetterHelp, who offer online counseling services. "I've prosecuted over 50 murders. This is the most horrific crime scene I've ever witnessed."On 23 August 2009, pastor Carol Daniels drove from her home in Oklahoma City to the Worthy Temple in Anadarko, which she had been presiding over for the better part of the previous decade. Despite the church no longer having an active congregation, Carol made this lengthy trip every Sunday just in case anyone felt compelled to worship. Less than two hours later, Carol's mutilated body would be discovered inside of her locked church. Authorities began their investigation in earnest that afternoon, but it remains unknown who killed this beloved mother and grandmother...Episode hosted, researched, written, and produced by Micheal WhelanOriginal music created by Micheal Whelan through Amper MusicTheme music created and composed by Ailsa TravesProducers: Roberta Janson, Ben Krokum, Gabriella Bromley, Steven Wilson, Quil Carter, Travis Scsepko, Laura Hannan, Bryan Hall, Damion Moore, Scott Meesey, Amy Hampton, Scott Patzold, Marie Vanglund, Astrid Kneier, Aimee McGregor, Jo Wong, Sara Moscaritolo, Sydney Scotton, Thomas Ahearn, Marion Welsh, Patrick Laakso, Rebecca O'Sullivan, Meadow Landry, Tatum Bautista, Sally Ranford, Kevin McCracken, Ruth Durbin, Michele Watson, Jared Midwood, Teunia Elzinga, Ryan Green, Jacinda C., Stephanie Joyner, Cherish Brady, and LaurenLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast and others, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerThis episode is sponsored by BetterHelp, who offer online counseling services. "It was very quick, it was very calculated, very cold-blooded (in) how it was done... I do believe that more than one person was involved in this..."On the morning of 25 January 2019, 29-year-old Elizabeth Barraza was gunned down in her own driveway. Her husband, Sergio, had departed for work just four minutes earlier, and Elizabeth - who had begun preparing for a garage sale - had called out for work that morning. In the two years since this bizarre and tragic act of violence, investigators have publicly theorized that this was either an incredibly personal crime or a professional hit. However, there seems to be no ascertainable motive for anyone to have targeted Elizabeth...Episode hosted, researched, written, and produced by Micheal WhelanOriginal music created by Micheal Whelan through Amper MusicTheme music created and composed by Ailsa TravesProducers: Roberta Janson, Ben Krokum, Gabriella Bromley, Steven Wilson, Quil Carter, Travis Scsepko, Laura Hannan, Bryan Hall, Damion Moore, Scott Meesey, Amy Hampton, Scott Patzold, Marie Vanglund, Astrid Kneier, Aimee McGregor, Jo Wong, Sara Moscaritolo, Sydney Scotton, Thomas Ahearn, Marion Welsh, Patrick Laakso, Rebecca O'Sullivan, Meadow Landry, Tatum Bautista, Sally Ranford, Kevin McCracken, Ruth Durbin, Michele Watson, Jared Midwood, Teunia Elzinga, Ryan Green, Jacinda C., Stephanie Joyner, and Cherish BradyLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast and others, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerThis episode is sponsored by Kefla Organics. "...the Unknown Person considers himself to be the director of a play and Canadian authorities are but actors subject to his direction."In April of 2013, following an investigation into a "black money" scam, Toronto Police Services arrested 32-year-old Herman Emmanuel Fankem, a French citizen that had overstayed his visitor's visa and supposedly gotten caught up in an organized crime ring. However, as police began to dive into this man's backstory, they discovered that his passport was a total forgery. In the years since, this man has refused to divulge any information about himself to authorities, and appears to be fully uncooperative - if not combative. For that reason, his identity continues to remain a total mystery...Episode hosted, produced, and research/writing by Micheal WhelanOriginal music created by Micheal Whelan through Amper MusicTheme music created and composed by Ailsa TravesProducers: Roberta Janson, Ben Krokum, Gabriella Bromley, Steven Wilson, Quil Carter, Travis Scsepko, Laura Hannan, Bryan Hall, Damion Moore, Scott Meesey, Amy Hampton, Scott Patzold, Marie Vanglund, Astrid Kneier, Aimee McGregor, Jo Wong, Sara Moscaritolo, Sydney Scotton, Thomas Ahearn, Marion Welsh, Patrick Laakso, Rebecca O'Sullivan, Meadow Landry, Tatum Bautista, Sally Ranford, Kevin McCracken, Ruth Durbin, Michele Watson, Jared Midwood, Teunia Elzinga, Ryan Green, Jacinda C., Stephanie Joyner, and Cherish BradyLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast and others, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerThis episode is sponsored by BetterHelp, who offer online counseling services. "Finding her body has burnt an indelible image in my mind. It is something a father should never have to suffer."On the morning of 21 October 2018, family and friends of missing 24-year-old Toyah Cordingley would scour the area around Wangetti Beach, a quiet and secluded stretch of sand not too far away from Toyah's hometown of Cairns. There - partially buried in sand dunes - Toyah's body would be found, having endured "visible, violent injuries" before her death. In the years since, police officials have remained tight-lipped about the specific details of their sprawling investigation. But it is believed that they have formulated a good case around the only named suspect, who fled the country just hours after Toyah's death...Special thanks to Hysteria Magazine for letting us borrow the audio from their Red Jumpsuit Apparatus' 29th November 2018 show at The Triffid in BrisbaneEpisode hosted, produced, and research/writing by Micheal WhelanOriginal music created by Micheal Whelan through Amper MusicTheme music created and composed by Ailsa TravesProducers: Roberta Janson, Ben Krokum, Gabriella Bromley, Steven Wilson, Quil Carter, Travis Scsepko, Laura Hannan, Bryan Hall, Damion Moore, Scott Meesey, Amy Hampton, Scott Patzold, Marie Vanglund, Astrid Kneier, Aimee McGregor, Jo Wong, Sara Moscaritolo, Sydney Scotton, Thomas Ahearn, Marion Welsh, Patrick Laakso, Rebecca O'Sullivan, Meadow Landry, Tatum Bautista, Sally Ranford, Kevin McCracken, Ruth Durbin, Michele Watson, Jared Midwood, Teunia Elzinga, Ryan Green, Jacinda C., Stephanie Joyner, and Cherish BradyLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast and others, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or Producer
"... the most significant incident of domestic terrorism involving the (power) grid that has ever occurred."In the early morning hours of April 16th, 2013, a group or individual would attack an electrical substation just outside of San Jose, California. Armed with at least two rifles, this mysterious entity would open fire on the station's transformers, destroying more than a dozen and causing more than $15 million in damages. Years later, federal officials still have no idea who perpetrated this bizarre attack on America's power grid - or why. Between 1972 and 1973, at least seven women were murdered in California's Sonoma County. The discovery of three bodies in July of 1979 - after years of inactivity in this case - would bring about a new wave of speculation in the press. Despite investigators hoping that these discoveries could help provide answers for the numerous unsolved cases, all they did was end up creating even more questions. In the decades since, investigators have pondered whether this case could be connected to some of the most infamous names in all of true crime, Ted Bundy and the Zodiac among them. But nearly half-a-century later, all of these murders remain unsolved...Part 5/5Episode hosted, produced, and research/writing by Micheal WhelanOriginal music created by Micheal Whelan through Amper MusicTheme music created and composed by Ailsa TravesProducers: Roberta Janson, Ben Krokum, Gabriella Bromley, Steven Wilson, Quil Carter, Travis Scsepko, Laura Hannan, Damion Moore, Amy Hampton, Bryan Hall, Scott Meesey, Scott Patzold, Marie Vanglund, Astrid Kneier, Aimee McGregor, Sydney Scotton, Sara Moscaritolo, Jo Wong, Thomas Ahearn, Marion Welsh, Patrick Laakso, Meadow Landry, Tatum Bautista, Sally Ranford, Kevin McCracken, Michele Watson, Teunia Elzinga, Jared Midwood, Ryan Green, Ruth Durbin, Stephanie Joyner, Jacinda C., Jennifer Henshaw, Elissa Hampton-Dutro, and Cherish BradyLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast and others, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerThis episode is sponsored by BetterHelp, who offer online counseling services. "We had no crime scene, just a body. What are you going to do?"In July of 1979 - more than four years after the hitchhiker murders from Sonoma County had come to an end - a couple of grisly discoveries were made in the surrounding area. One came from the outskirts of Santa Rosa, Rincon Valley, while the other was made approximately 80 miles northwest, just outside of Willits. Both discoveries would raise more questions than answers, and end up expanding not only the the chronology of the case, but the overall scope. "The only way to connect this is if we have some kind of freak who travels the whole city."In 1975, a confidential FBI report - which was published the same year that a psychological profile was created for an unknown killer from Sonoma County - purported that the murders of hitchhikers from Santa Rosa were linked to at least eight others from the surrounding area. These eight additional murders, which spanned as far north as Yuba County and as far south as Monterey County, all unfolded at the same time as the Santa Rosa crimes and seemed to be centered around the San Francisco Bay Area. And while they all varied in unique ways, they seemed to share a number of similarities...Part 3/5Episode hosted, produced, and research/writing by Micheal WhelanOriginal music created by Micheal Whelan through Amper MusicTheme music created and composed by Ailsa TravesProducers: Roberta Janson, Ben Krokum, Gabriella Bromley, Peggy Belarde, Quil Carter, Laura Hannan, Travis Scsepko, Damion Moore, Brittany Norris, Amy Hampton, Steven Wilson, Scott Meesey, Marie Vanglund, Kevin McCracken, Scott Patzold, Bryan Hall, Astrid Kneier, Aimee McGregor, Sydney Scotton, Sara Moscaritolo, Sue Kirk, Jo Wong, Thomas Ahearn, Marion Welsh, Patrick Laakso, Meadow Landry, Tatum Bautista, Teunia Elzinga, Michele Watson, Ryan Green, Stephanie Joyner, Dawn Kellar, Jacinda B., Elissa Hampton-Dutro, Sharon Manetta, Ruth Durbin, Cherish Brady, and Jennifer HenshawLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast and others, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or Producer

"There are plenty of places to hide a body and I've no doubt there are some around we haven't found."Throughout 1973, detectives from California's Sonoma County would continue to investigate a bizarre string of deaths that had started the year prior. All of the victims were young women that were last seen hitchhiking in the area around Santa Rosa, Sonoma's largest city. That year, the discovery of four additional bodies would be reported, all of whom appeared to have been targeted by the same killer. In the final days of 1972, a spotlight would begin to shine upon California's Sonoma County. That year, a handful of young women had gone missing or been murdered in the area around Sonoma's most populated city, Santa Rosa. In July of 1984, a story originating from Long Island, New York began to make headlines throughout the world. The body of 17-year-old Gary Lauwers was found in a shallow grave in the Aztakea Woods, just outside of the sleepy harbor village of Northport. Police would quickly narrow in on the person they believed to be responsible for this violent crime: 17-year-old Ricky Kasso, who they alleged had participated in a cult ritual during the commission of this vile act. While the story would fade from the headlines, its legacy would live on, becoming an omen of the Satanic Panic craze yet to come later that decade...Special thanks to Jesse Pollack, Dan Jones, and Anthony Zenkus for speaking with me.
