This week we review two films from directors who like to shine a light on communities on the margins. First up, we take a look at the coming-of-age drama Bird, the sixth feature film from Andrea Arnold. It concerns a young girl named Bailey (Nykiya Adams), who thinks she's met a kindred spirit in the title character Bird, played by Franz Rogowski. But all is not as it seems.  Next, it's Anora, the eighth feature from Sean Baker, which won the coveted Palme d'Or earlier this year. The film introduces us to Ani (Mikey Madison), a dancer at a New York strip club, whose life gets turned upside down when she spends a whirlwind week with a gawky Russian playboy, Ivan (Mark Eydelshteyn).  And as both Anora and Bird are notable for their ambitious tonal shifts, we take a look at some of our favourite (and least favourite) tonal shifts in cinema. TIMESTAMPS What We've Been Watching - horrors (The Blob, The Ring, Immaculate), Juror #2 and Gilmore Girls (2:17) Bird review (10:42) Anora review (25:10) Our favourite tonal shifts in movies ft Sorry to Bother You, Mute Witness, Laura, Psycho (39:13) Follow the team on Twitter @ptrsmpsn @anahitrooz @jamiedunnesq @lew_rob_, get us on Twitter, Instagram, Letterboxd and TikTok @thecineskinny, email us at cineskinny@theskinny.co.uk Intro/outro music: Too Cool by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/4534-too-cool) License: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license

Mike, El Kabong, and Dick White Tip return with Part II of our Snuff Film series, and while the subject matter for this one is tame by our standards, we ourselves get a little carried away talking about snuff in more mainstream films such as 8MM, Vacancy, Running Scared, Scream 4, and the Sinister films, along with the lesser known entries Mute Witness, Thesis, and The Brave. Sal gets a lesson in PC terminology and gives us a lesson in nasty pornography. Other topics and side tangents include scum-bucket Jerry Lewis, plastic surgery disasters, seedy motels and Bigfoot! It's another episode on our favorite topic on Movies For Life - more Films About Filmmaking! This week we have two absolute gems to talk about, possibly deeper cuts, that are totally worth giving a look if you haven't seen them! First up from Michele is the surprisingly funny and twisty thriller whose plot centers around the making of a slasher film - we're talking MUTE WITNESS from 1995! Then, also from 1995, we dive into the hilarious yet poignant LIVING IN OBLIVION! This is a much more laid-back, fun chat than most of our episodes, so sit with us and we hope you have as great a time listening as we did recording! Note: THELMA & LOUISE is teased at the end as being a movie coming up on the next episode. Unfortunately that didn't work out so we will only be talking about A PERFECT WORLD for that show. Tread Perilously enters Horror month with their first visit to Tales From The Crypt and an episode called "Mute Witness to Murder" When Suzy (Patricia Clarkson) takes a moment out from her wedding anniversary/Halloween party out on the balcony, she happens to see a man across the way killing a women. The grisly scene robs her of the ability to speak. Frantic, her husband (Reed Birney) finds Dr. Trask (Richard Thomas) -- who just happens to be the murderer! He is also the owner of a nearby mental hospital, so he commits her in hopes of silencing the only witness to his crime. Will she figure out a way to speak again and stop Dr. Trask from getting away with murder? Erik and Justin discuss the basics of Tales From The Crypt as a series and the merits of adapting five-page comic book stories to television. Erik mistakes Reed Birney for actor Ron Kuhlman (Jan Brady's husband on The Brady Bunch spinoffs). Justin identifies when writers get bored with naming characters. He also identifies his own tendency to support an incipient monarchy. It leads to a digression of Ice and Fire. Both praise the 1996 thriller Mute Witness. The progressive content of the story turns out to be a positive and we learn Man Power Pills will cure Angina.
