Now, Youth Climate Save boasts more than 70 chapters in places as far away as India and the U.K. Its members hold weekly Zoom meetings to plan fundraising and other actions youth can take online, as well as an upcoming vegan support group. A sense of urgency animates Butler, who cites research on how a shift to veganism can fight climate change. “That's basically what I've been focusing on, just talking about how if we don't start going vegan, we're not going to have a planet,” she says with sobering, wide-eyed earnestness. At age ten, Genesis became the youngest ever TedX speaker when she gave her inspiring talk on healing the planet through vegan eating. Now, she continues to advocate for animals through speaking engagements, social media, and has even started her own foundation called Genesis For Animals. Plus, she was this year's winner of the Lisa Shapiro Young Animal Activist Award, presented to her by Compassion Over Killing's Erica Meier! What would be your Ted Talk topic of choice? It's a great ice-breaker question, but I can't imagine many 10 year-olds thinking about it. Well, when Genesis Butler was 10 years old, she didn't even have to question that she was going to discuss healing the planet, when she did her own Ted Talk on climate change. Starting off with an interest in animal rights, Genesis quickly realized that climate change was a major issue that had to be dealt with as soon as possible. She started with some humble social media postings with the aim of getting discussions among family and friends, but that quickly turned into a big follower base, and the responsibility that came with reaching thousands of people with each post. Genesis has gone on to do amazing things with her life already; She has spoken at global events, cone a TedTalk, and nearly got the pope to go vegan! Genesis is an advocate for self-educating, veganism and being as proactive as possible with your beliefs. To me, amazing success can be any small goal achieved, and the reason Genesis is so successful in my eyes, is simply that she is acting on an important value. She's a force, and may there be many more Genesis' out there.

In California in January of 2022, AB 558, the Child Nutrition Act of 2022, authored by Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian and cosponsored by Social Compassion in Legislation, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, and Friends of the Earth, which incentivizes K-12 public schools across the state to offer healthier, climate-friendly plant-based meals and beverages, passed the California Assembly Education Committee by a vote of 5-0. Under the grant program set up by the bill, schools could apply to receive additional state funding for serving a plant-based entrée and plant-based milk. Visit SocialCompassioninLegislation.org to get on the team. Visit UnchainedTV,com for hundreds of healthy, low-carbon-footprint, plant-based recipes. “AB 558, “The Childhood Nutrition Act of 2022,” passed its first hurdle after it passed in the Education Committee with a 5 to 0 vote. The Childhood Nutrition Act of 2022 will seek to improve the quality of food our kids eat while reducing greenhouse gas emissions through incentivizing healthy, all-inclusive diets. This bill will also assist school districts to adequately address the hunger needs of younger children who are not yet of school-age to have access to food, specifically breakfast, to guarantee that they are fed the most important meal of the day. As the bill moves forward in the process, we are excited to continue fighting for Childhood Nutrition!” stated Assemblymember Nazarian. Multiple studies show that a plant-based diet is more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Shifting to more plant-based options reduce our carbon footprint by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and requires less land and water for food production. “California serves an astounding 540 million school lunches each year. The policies that the State implements around what foods are served has an enormous impact not only on our students' health, but also, and less obviously, an equally enormous impact on our environment and climate change, stated Nickolaus Sackett, Director of Legislative Affairs for cosponsor Social Compassion in Legislation. By creating incentives for schools to reduce the carbon footprint of half a billion meals, we will see a massive and immediate impact in our State's fight against climate change.” While numerous school districts across the state want to increase plant-based offerings, many face cost barriers since animal-based foods and cow's milk are heavily subsidized by the federal government relative to plant-based options. More and more people my age understand that if you love animals, you don't eat them. But it can be hard to find something to eat at school, said Genesis Butler, Social Compassion in Legislation Board Member, who, at age 12, became one of the youngest people ever to give a TED Talk. I'm glad California is giving us more options to help us, animals and the earth.

Genesis Butler is a climate change activist, animal rights advocate, and founder of Genesis for Animals, a rescue and sanctuary organization. And she's just 13 years old. In this episode, Dr. Jane Goodall talks with Genesis about her own beginnings as a young environmentalist, with both activists sharing parallel stories from the same early age, albeit seven decades apart. With empathetic hearts, curious minds, and supportive mothers, both young activists found themselves drawn to a life of advocating on behalf of people, the planet and other animals. The conversation explores what being an animal and environmental advocate means today, ways to get younger generations involved through programs like Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots, and how Genesis finds hope in opening the minds and hearts of people who come to understand the profound likeness we share with other animals, and their innate value. As Dr. Goodall has shared, “We are not the only beings with personalities, rational thought and emotions. There is no sharp line dividing us from the rest of the animal kingdom. It is a very blurry line, and it gets more blurry every day.” At the End of the Rainbow: Stay to the end of the episode to hear a rare archival clip of Jane's mother Vanne, her greatest support in life, telling the story of a young Jane's disappearance as a four year old to discover where eggs come from. You may remember our previous conversation from episode 34, where Bobby shared his personal journey towards health that started in 2015, when he weighed almost 300 lbs and suffered from Type2 Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and everything else that comes with it. After transitioning to a whole food plant based vegan diet, Bobby was able to reverse and cure his diabetes in 6 weeks and have lost close to 100lbs. However, it wasn’t until he went to the first LA Animal Save pig vigil and met Shaun Monson (director of “Earthlings”) and Amy Jean Davis (founder of LAAS) that he truly understood what it meant to be a vegan. Today, Bobby is deeply involved in the movement. Bobby has worked with Shaun Monson as his cinematographer and producing partner, he has been an organizer for the LA Save Movement and official Vigil Photographer. Bobby also produced and directed a vegan travel show called “The Road Less Eaten” with episodes in Israel, Ireland, and London. We look to our leaders to lead.  When they don't, which can happen more often than not, it can take a 12-year old girl to be the spark of change.  On this episode of Awesome Vegans, I am honored to be the FIRST interview (#JaneUnchained, WGN Radio) with young activist Genesis Butler immediately after she publicly (New York Times, The Guardian) invited Pope Francis to go vegan for lent. As noted in his encyclical letter, Pope Francis explains that we need to make lifestyle changes to address climate change.  Well...then let's do that, starting with the Pope himself.  As Genesis points out, going vegan for lent is a chance for His Holiness to take a stand against climate change, world hunger, large-scale animal suffering and a current international human health crisis. With incredible sophistication from the sunniness of her Long Beach bedroom, I interview this incredible spirit.  Listen in to hear first-hand her encouragement to the Pope and all his followers to show compassion to people, animals and the planet when it is called upon most: lent.   And if compassion somehow isn't compelling enough for Pope Francis, maybe the $1Million being offered to the charities of his choice should he accept this invitation is!  For more information, visit Million Dollar Vegan and ElysabethAlfano.com .
