The Los Angeles Astronomical Society (LAAS) is one of the oldest and largest amateur astronomy clubs in the United States, and this year, it’s turning 100. To mark the occasion, the LAAS threw a centennial star party on the lawn of Griffith Observatory, featuring 100 telescopes, a dedication ceremony, and a community of passionate skywatchers who showed up rain and all. In this episode, we sit down with Laura-May Abron, vice president of the Los Angeles Astronomical Society and chair of its Centennial Committee, to discuss what it took to put together the event. We drop into the centennial dedication ceremony to hear from LAAS President Keith Armstrong and Griffith Observatory Director Ed Krupp. We also spend time with some of the remarkable members who make this community what it is, including LAAS historian Louis Chilton, who has been a member for over 60 years, research scientist and LAAS member Bryce Bolin, self-taught optician and telescope builder Jeff Schroeder, and Geo Somoza, volunteer at The Planetary Society and one of the people who has dedicated his life to showing others the sky. Im lang vergangenen Jahr 1999 erschien mit Planescape Torment ein faszinierendes und zugleich ungewöhnliches Spiel, das sich nicht nur mit seinem Cover-Artwork von der Konkurrenz abhob: Das Rollenspiel erzählt die Geschichte eines mysteriösen Wesens, das unsterblich zu sein scheint und sich auf eine große Reise begibt um herauszufinden, woher die unverhoffte Langlebigkeit kommt. Als Bühne dienen Schauplätze aus dem Pen'n'Paper-Klassiker Dungeons & Dragons, in der Regie von Entwicklerstudio Black Isle Studios sitzen größen wie Chris Avellone (Fallout, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights), Guido Henkel (Drachen von Laas) und Komponist Mark Morgen (Fallout, Wasteland, Stasis). Trotz der prominenten Entwicklerriege und der frischen Spielidee war Planescape Torment kein großer kommerzieller Erfolg, gilt aber bis heute als Klassiker aus der zweiten Reihe. Grund genug für Dom Schott, den Titel endlich mal nachzuholen. Unterstützt wird er dabei von Daniel Martin Feige, Professor für Philosophie und seit 1999 fasziniert von Planescape Torment. Gemeinsam machen sie sich für das Rollenspiel warm, reisen in die späten 90er und diskutieren nicht zuletzt über das ungewöhnliche Spielecover.

Der Track, der mit über 40 beteiligten Artists in den vergangenen Wochen medial omnipräsent gefeiert wird, verbindet etliche Künstler mit konträren Styles auf einem Track; auf einem Beat; in einem Video; unter einer Frage. Neben der kritischen Frage nach der Intelligenz pusht er den "Real Recognize Real"-Gedanken und bietet neben aufstrebenden Künstlern auch den klassischen Boombap-Beats eine Plattform, die lange Zeit eher erkämpft werden musste. Trotz dieser im Spotlight stehenden Groß-Kollaboration sind auch andere Künstler nicht untätig gewesen. Während der Einser seinen Album-Release noch etwas verschoben hat schafft es PA Sports mit seinem neuen Album "PARHAM" den meiner Bewertung nach den selbst auferlegten Ansprüchen gerecht zu werden. Auch Künstler wie Luciano, reezy, und Dante YN überzeugen mit neuen Tracks, die in mir Gefühle zwischen Nostalgie und Progression auslösen. Auch Übersee darf nicht vergessen werden... IDK scheint nach seinem kürzlichen Album-Release noch nicht genug zu haben und mit einer atmosphärischen EP von Westside Gunn und einer Kollaboration von u.a. Pusha T und Jadakiss sollten auch die Oldschool Heads zufrieden sein. Liebe geht auch raus an das Debüt-Tape von Ray Vaughn, welches für mich eine Art Brustlöser war und meine Lust auf Musik wieder intensiviert hat. Wir lassen uns bei der Review einfach vom jacekschen Schreibstil inspirieren und steigen ein in Chinesische Sternzeichen, holen Trash-Filme aus dem Regal und verlieren uns in einer tiefen Roberto Geissini-Recherche. Letzteres haben wir natürlich Karate Andi zu verdanken, der mit OG Keemo und LAAS das absurde Gäste-Trio der EP bildet.
