This episode was recorded in 2021. Genelle Aldred, newsreader, communication expert, and now author who has worked as a journalist at many of the UK largest broadcasting organisations for over a decade, including BBC, ITV and ITN. In this episode we discuss her debut book Communicate for Change: Creating Justice in a World of Bias unpicking some of its fascinating themes: how to make a positive difference, how to think for yourself, how to have better conversations and how to recognise our own biases and blind spots. This book encouraged me to ask better questions and question my own assumptions, breaking away from singular narratives and monolithic thinking. Hope you enjoy this conversation about how it's OK to agree to disagree in conversation and how it's important to not shy away from other peoples truth in order to see how other people around us think. In Part 3 of Robbie and Genelle, host Cameron Jay revisits the murder. In January of 1994, the young couple with their entire futures ahead of them were brutally murdered in their Athens home. Together, we'll examine the initial police report, learn what friends were told of the murder and the crime scene, and we'll learn that there were- at least initially- several avenues for investigators of the Athens Clarke County Police department to explore. You'll also hear from Dr. David Waldron of Federation University in Australia, who helps us understand why the couple's fascination with Dungeons and Dragons might have garnered the attention of investigators in 1994. In Part 5, host Cameron Jay pays homage to Fox 5 Atlanta's Randy Travis, a seasoned investigative reporter who singlehandedly gave the murders of Robbie Bryant and Genelle Helms the attention it deserved all those years ago. Randy will confirm some of what we have already learned, while explaining why this case mattered so much to him. Here's Randy's story mentioned in the episode: https://www.fox5atlanta.com/news/baby-kelsey-at-29-im-so-much-stronger-than-this-story You'll then hear from Kesley Bryant, the daughter of the slain couple, discuss how the loss of her birth parents has affected every aspect of her life– but also how she's managed to work through those hardships and is leading a successful life she hopes her parents can now be proud of. We'll end the episode by speaking with ACCPD Police Chief Jerry Saulters, who explains where the case currently stands- and who authorities have their sights set on in the modern day. In Part 4 of Robbie and Genelle, host Cameron Jay centers the podcast on the one man at the center of the entire investigation: the uncle of victim Genelle Helms. The investigation quickly centered on the Florida man, claiming that there was motive, means, and opportunity. What was that motive? And how did this investigation not only affect the lives of those who loved Robbie and Genelle– but how did it affect the young couple's nine month old baby? We'll address all of this and more. In Part 2 of Robbie and Genelle, host Cameron Jay dives deeper into the lives of Robbie Bryant and Genelle Helms as a couple, and how the birth of their baby girl changed their entire worlds just nine months before they were murdered. We learn that the two were heavily invested in a local gaming group, which partook in everything from Live Action Role Playing outdoors on the fields at the University of Georgia, to Dungeons and Dragons. Together, we'll learn that in this friend group, there was much more than meets the eye. Learn more about their interesting lives- and romances- by listening now! In Part 1 of Robbie and Genelle, host Cameron Jay takes listeners back to 1994 in Athens, Georgia, where Robbie Bryant and Genelle Helms were first getting their start in life. The episode will teach you more about both of them as individuals: who were they? What did they enjoy doing? What do their friends have to say about their lives? We begin here because understanding who the victims were and how they lived their lives is always a key part in understanding why the young couple might have been murdered in 1994…and who might be involved. Our diet, the balance of our gut microbiome, and fibre intake can have significant impacts on our digestive health and disease outcomes. This week I interview Dr. Genelle Healey on the use of exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) treatment for IBD patients. Dr Genelle Healey undertook her PhD in Nutritional Science at Massey University in New Zealand. Her research looked at what influence habitual dietary fibre intake has on gut microbiota response to a prebiotic (fibre) intervention. Prior to commencing her PhD, Genelle worked as a New Zealand registered Dietitian caring for patients with various diseases including gastrointestinal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), renal disease and diabetes. In 2017, Genelle moved to Vancouver to start a postdoctoral fellowship at University of British Columbia. The focus of her research is to better understand the impact nutrition, particularly fibre, has on the gut microbiome and disease outcomes for patients with IBD. During her postdoctoral fellowship she utilized models of IBD to investigate the therapeutic potential of novel nutritional interventions with the hope that these therapies can one day be used to positively impact the health and wellbeing of patients with IBD. Specifically, she has demonstrated that exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) enriched with fibre leads to beneficial changes in the gut microbiome, less inflammation and better disease outcomes compared to EEN without fibre. We talk about: How Healey became interested in the field of digestive health What IBD is How diet plays a role in the management of IBD Some prescriptive diets that could put a patient into remission. The role of ‘enteral nutrition' in IBD The difference between PEN and EEN The mechanism of action in which we believe PEN/EEN can induce remission in IBD patients How the gut microbiome is involved The formulas used in IBD management and their ingredients, including emulsifiers The overall complexity of IBD Connect with Dr. Healey on her researchgate profile or on Twitter
Join Bishop Bill and Pastors Rebel and Genelle as they continue their conversation "sparked" by the book The End of Burnout: Why Work Drains Us and How to Build Better Lives by Jonathan Malesic. This week they discuss the differences between ideals versus reality, especially when it comes to ministry, and the day to day work of working at a church/ministry.
When you are othered in an organisational culture that is harmful how do you decide to stay and help change it or leave. Genelle Aldred discuss two signs that could help you to make that decision. There are not straight lines, it's often complex and messy. However staying in a toxic culture can have a long-term detrimental effect on you. So we all need to think carefully about whether or not things can change and if you are the person to achieve that change.Genelle has seen - and has herself - burnout when people try to swim against a cultural tide. Whilst intentions might be good, sometimes we don't have the influence, power or right set of privileges to effect change where we are. The pain this causes and the long term detrimental effects aren't worth it. Sometimes, our ego makes us feel that we have more clout to affect change than we do. It's important to acknowledge that no one can save the whole world in this space. Although some people have a higher pain threshold to stay and endure, you have to do what's right for you and the situation. My guest today is Genelle Aldred, newsreader, communication expert, and now author who has worked as a journalist at many of the UK largest broadcasting organisations for over a decade, including BBC, ITV and ITN. There's a lot of anger on social media. Maybe you've been on the receiving end? Or given someone you disagree with a piece of your mind on Twitter? Because they are just so wrong and you are just so right? What we probably can agree on is that these polarised conversations aren't getting us anywhere. Writer and communications strategist Genelle Aldred thinks we can do better. In her new book Communicate for Change (click here to get your copy) Genelle urges us to look first at our own biases, before trying to influence others. "All of us have problematic thoughts. Every single one of us would offend someone somewhere with something that we think and a view that we hold."Listen for a chat about, Being truly authentic in what you share online. Why conversations about social justice aren't working. Whether social platforms should be compelled to change and ban anonymous accounts. I am joined today by a long term friend of mine, Genelle Aldred. Genelle is a former ITV and BBC journalist and the founder of communications consultancy GAC. She is now a published author and has written a book we all need to read. It's called Communicate for Change: Creating justice in a world of bias and it explores the missing nuisance to our conversation in the public arena at this moment in time. It's a thought provoking book that unpacks the tribalism we see in our culture and presents a new way forward, a far more harmonious way, a way that appreciates all individuals and is a guide book to how we get there. If we want to make a positive difference, we have to know how to recognise our own biases and blind spots - only then can we understand how to be part of the solution and start having meaningful conversations. Genelle offers suggestions to help us be better listeners, readers, watchers and talkers. She breaks down the barriers to effective conversation so that we can disagree in a more nuanced and thoughtful way and stop singular narratives driving our conversation. This was such a fascinating conversation and I'm thrilled she's shone a light on a topic that is so relevant. I can't wait for you all to hear it!Find Genelle: Instagram: @genellealdredWebsite: https://www.genellealdred.com/ Buy her book: https://www.waterstones.com/book/communicate-for-change/genelle-aldred/9780281085576You can now buy my book, Happy Not Perfect: Upgrade Your Mind, Challenge Your Thoughts and Free Yourself From Anxiety by clicking here. I scream! You scream! We all scream for Ice Cream! On this episode of The Mothers of Reinvention, host Jess Zaino sits down with Interior Designer turned All Chill Ice Cream Shop Owner and Maker, Genelle Brooks-Petty. What started out as a behind the scenes conversation about the VH-1 reality show that Genelle and Jess starred on, quickly turned into a lesson on the incredibly rich history of the Los Angeles neighborhood of Leimert Park. From here, the women talk their favorite All Chill ice cream flavors - like Cherry Vanilla, Champagne Sorbet, Lavender Coffee, Smoked Olive Oil and an adult version of Bubble Gum - and reflect on their time hosting a Los Angeles fundraiser for Vice President Kamala Harris, a fellow Howard Alum. You Know! Genelle is the Principal Designer at BPC Interior Design. Board Member SoCal NOMA, an Associate AIA, Allied ASID and Co-owner of All Chill Inc. Working for the exposure of all things beautiful, our principal designer, Genelle Brooks-Petty, lives by the words of her beloved grandmother, "This is not a dress rehearsal. So, live it to the fullest!" As a consultant, she has taken that passionate approach to build a successful wardrobe styling business. It was her clients in that realm who pushed her into interior design. While studying interior architecture at UCLA, honing skills under a famed designer, and servicing residential and boutique scale commercial clients of her own, Genelle has developed a unique approach to interior design. Her work bridges gaps. It is historical with a modern edge; cost-efficient and high style; vintage and brand-new. Genelle is a graduate of Howard University's School of Business and holds a Master of Interior Architecture from the UCLA Extension/ California State Polytechnic University, Pomona joint study program.
