I talk with Elise McCave, filmmaker and head of film at Kickstarter. For the entire month of March, the crowdfunding website will be hosting "Long Story Short", a campaign to highlight short films on the site. It's fair to say that if you're an indie filmmaker, there's a better than even chance you've spent time on Kickstarter, either as a funder or raising funds. The list is incredible and many crowdfunders have now won awards at prominent festivals. It's an absolute joy to talk about film with somebody who is responsible for shepherding so many films to creation: an estimated 30,000 through Kickstarter! Happy Pride Month, folks! On this episode, writer and director Georgia Oakley joins Gemma and Ella to discuss her debut feature Blue Jean, now in theaters across the US. We unspool the past and present queer–and unintentionally political–histories in the UK via Oakley's film, while also celebrating four more striking female performances in her four favorites: Three Colors: Blue, Safe, A Woman Under the Influence and Morvern Callar. Topics include: coming out as a daily thing, Juliette Binoche's unpredictable behavior, the greatest performance by any actor ever, lessons from low-budget theater, Cate Blanchett doing things, the hostility of pastel colors, the unknowability of good actors, queer-coded kids films, missing your tube station to process your post-movie thoughts, the one movie that made Ella change her own Four Faves, and the one scene that makes Georgia want to get up in the morning. Georgia Oakley's stunning directorial debut BLUE JEAN, is set in 1988 England and Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government is about to pass a law stigmatizing gays and lesbians, forcing Jean (Rosy McEwen, in a powerhouse performance), a gym teacher, to live a double life. As pressure mounts from all sides, the arrival of a new student catalyzes a crisis that will challenge Jean to her core. Something has to give, and McEwen embodies with exquisite insight the mounting strain upon a woman who has sought to keep hidden what now burns for some release or resolution. The catalyst for change is the arrival at Jean's school of a new pupil, Lois (Lucy Halliday) – raw, vulnerable, and instinctively connected to Jean as soon as they meet. When Lois begins to frequent the lesbian bar that is Jean's refuge, the boundaries between Jean's worlds collapse, and she finds herself dangerously desperate to rebuild them. The BAFTA-nominated film won the Venice Film Festival's People's Choice Award, as well as four British Independent Film Awards. Director and writer Georgia Oakley joins us for a conversation on why a look back on laws (Section 28) “governing” the lives of the LGBTQ people provides a greater understanding of past bigotry as well as why it is vitally important to remain vigilant regarding the current threats to the human rights. BLUE JEAN features a slew of terrific performances, led by Rosy McEwen as Jean, Kerrie Hayes, Lucy Halliday and Lydia Page. For more go to: magpictures.com/bluejean

One of the most exciting musical revivals this year is of course Assassins at Chichester Festival Theatre. A firm favourite among Sondheim aficionados, the musical tells the stories of the assassins and almost assassins of US Presidents. One of the show's stars is Amy Booth-Steel who's playing Sara Jane Moore; the woman who attempted to assassinate Gerald Ford. The production marks the first time Amy has performed in Chichester and also the first time working with long-time friend Polly Findlay who directs her first musical. We hear Amy talk about her fondness for Polly as well as for Stephen Sondheim who she calls a genius and expects the run to be an emotional one as Sondheim was involved in the new revisions for this production before he passed. In this brand new interview, Amy Booth-Steel opens up about what drew her to the part of Sara Jane Moore and why this show feels particularly relevant today. Throughout her career, Amy has openly spoken about her views on politics and current affairs, and here she shares that she feels it's particularly important to keep an eye on politics following the pandemic. Over her career, Amy has also starred in some of the most acclaimed productions in recent years including The Light Princess, Tammy Faye and Heathers. More recently, Amy also starred in Georgia Oakley's Blue Jean, a film that discusses the story of teachers who abseiled down the Houses of Parliament in protest against Section 28. Now, as she heads to Chichester for this hugely exciting revival, she re-emphasises her love for acting and telling stories and she shares her hope that the show will help audiences have a new perspective on the real life people the show talks about.Assassins runs at Chichester Festival Theatre from 3rd June - 24 June with tickets on sale now!

This episode of Girls On Film is dedicated to BAFTA-nominated drama Blue Jean, which is set in 1980s Newcastle, at a time when Thatcher's government was making life very difficult for gay people in the UK. The law ‘Section 28' forbade “the teaching in schools of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship”. Rosy McEwen puts in a terrific performance as teacher Jean, who has to keep her sexuality a secret, and is put in a difficult position when she meets a pupil of hers in a lesbian bar. Anna Smith talks with writer-director Georgia Oakley and producer Hélène Sifre, as well as with lead actor Rosy McEwen and Kerrie Hayes, who plays Jean's girlfriend Viv. Back once again, the team review Alice Diop's award-winning Saint Omer and Georgia Oakley's Section 28 drama Blue Jean, before ripping into Margaret Thatcher for a good 20 minutes via a discussion of noted 'normal country' Great Britain. We're talking hauntology, male dance troupes, light-to-mid gangsterism, Bill Nighy shouting into the distance, and films that can make even the saddest amongst you smile. A fun time all round...
