This week's guest is IGN Managing Editor Rachel Weber, who probably has the most varied and fascinating career in games media of anyone who's appeared on the podcast so far. Hear about her transatlantic journey from OPM during the PS3 launch days to GamesIndustry.biz, Rolling Stone's Glixel channel and GamesRadar, before she landed at IGN.This week's music is from the Lost: Via Domus soundtrack by Michael Giacchino. You don't need me to tell you that games journalism is a tough business. Shortly after we recorded this episode, Game Informer laid off nearly half of their staff. Brian Crecente, a co-founder of Kotaku, Polygon, Rolling Stone's Glixel, and Variety's gaming coverage has been through those same ringers, and they never get any easier. But picking yourself back up and starting a new games media website doesn't have to be an insurmountable task. Crecente joins the 1099 to discuss the aftermath of Variety shutting down its otherwise successful video game coverage, what he hopes to achieve next, and all the lessons he's learned along the way about fundraising, talking to boardroom execs who control the purse strings, building a staff that will carry you beyond the starting line, the use of freelancers, and plenty more. My guest today is John Davison. John is currently the general manager of Glixel, a new gaming website by the publisher of Rolling Stone, but is perhaps best known to most as the VP of 1up and one of the original hosts of 1up Yours. We talk through John's inrcedible career in the games press, from his early work in the UK games press on PC Player and PC Zone, the cover disk wars of the mid nineties, becoming an editor aged just 21, his move to America, the impact of 1up Yours and what inspired him to create What They Play. We of course hit on a bunch of games too. How Skyrim and Oblivion ruled his life, why Archer MacLean's Dropzone gave him his first taste of videogame press, the generational impact of Doom and how games are a form of expression, not just in what you make, but in how you play. This was a treat. I don't want to go to work today. I want to stay home and play. On my vidoegames. iTunes HERE - SUBSCRIBE / RATE / REVIEW RSS HERE Games discussed: Dropzone, Doom, Xenogears, Zelda, Skyrim, Oblivion, The Witcher 3, Agar.io, GTA 3, Mincraft, Star Raiders, Pole Position. Over 12 years have passed since the release of Madden NFL 06 but the mere mention of the title still conjures up emotions from sports gaming fans. From an industry standpoint it also could be cited as being a major contributor to a turning point around that time in consumer distrust with not just what publishers would say about games before they released, but also what they showed.  Former lead designer for the Madden NFL series Ian Cummings joins Bryan Wiedey and Rich Grisham to discuss the events surrounding development of that game. Thanks to a piece from Glixel which included interviews with several parties involved in development we've learned a lot about the behind-the-scenes trials and tribulations and here Ian provides additional perspective and his first-person account of everything that took place. Also in this episode T.J. Lauerman goes through the first reveals for MLB The Show 18 which includes a focus on the improvements made to gameplay and the addition of new legends for Franchise and Diamond Dynasty.  On the show this week: Bryan Wiedey, Pastapadre/Sporting News/Hit the Pass (@pastapadre) Rich Grisham, OOTP Developments/Hit the Pass (@richgrisham) Ian Cummings, Third Time Games (@iantcummings) T.J.
