The Edison mansion has always been a creepy old house on the edge of town. There have been rumors of strange experiments going on and of odd creatures living amongst the Edison family. There is even a story that a meteorite once crashed near the home nearly 20 years ago. More immediately, a girl named Sandy has gone missing from the local highschool and her boyfriend Dave swears that he saw Dr. Fred abducting her. Dave knows that he cannot do it alone and will need help from two other students if he has any hope of infiltrating the mansion and rescuing Sandy.Support NEStalgia directly by becoming a member of our Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/Nestalgia Members at the $5 and above level get access to our brand new show NEStalgia Bytes. Maniac Mansion: "The 10th Anniversary Special" In quite possibly the only time we'll ever cover a pilot episode on this podcast, Chris Cummins of Sci-Fi Explosion joins us for this forgotten, but subversive and smart Eugene Levy-helmed Canadian sitcom and its bizarre first episode – a fake clip show celebrating its 10th anniversary. Seriously! We talk about this show's deep connections with Schitt's Creek, Freaks and Geeks, and the hugely influential improvisation powerhouse Second City and SCTV. Plus, a dive into this show's origins as a LucasArts video game adaptation, a brief history of The Family Channel and its religious ties, and the clip show parodies, dream sequences, anniversary special tropes, JFK assassination jokes, and meta references that this truly daring episode offers.Watch Sci-Fi Explosion on TwitchFollow Sci-Fi Explosion on InstagramA proud part of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast CollectiveTip us on Ko-Fi | Gimmicks WebsiteEmail: gimmickspodcast@gmail.com | Bluesky | InstagramTheme song: "Disco Tears" by Raven | Creative Commons Attribution 3.0Sources: 1992 Entertainment Weekly piece on “SCTV” alumni are working on the show, Benjamin Scetskey writing for Entertainment Weekly, January 1992The Weird and Wonderful History of Maniac Mansion, Ian Howard writing for Fandom, November 2022Exclusive Interview with Eugene Levy: Creating the Comedy for Maniac Mansion, Dan Madsen writing for Lucasfilm Fan Club Magazine, August 1990.

We're off this week but we bring you two Again With Again With This episodes full of Canadianosity. AWAWT 149: Let's Watch Kathleen Robertson In Maniac Mansion! We're heading back to the early nineties (again) with an episode of weird, energetic cross-border fam-com Maniac Mansion, which was loosely based on the videogame -- and starred a young Kathleen Robertson as teen brainiac Tina; Mr. Weir as her dad; and a grouchy styrofoam meteor as the villain of the week. How did Robertson do? And should you watch? AWAWT 150: Let's Watch Jason Priestley In The Series Finale Of The Fantasy Island Sequel! Nobody really watched FOX's Fantasy Island sequel except Tara, which is probably why it got cancelled, but we're contemplating the series finale -- and Jason Priestley's one-off turn as a jerky cheater who gets his thanks to a revenge spell. Weirdly abusive mermaid girlfriends with great butts, baffling timelines and memory tricks, and inconvenient beach heels all somehow added up to a fun time, and JP knew his role and played it well. Maniac Mansion was probably my go-to (even though it scared the hell out of me)! I know I'm not the only one that was scared of it either. You control a bunch of high school kids and set out to save a kidnapped girlfriend from a creepy mansion. The game revolves around solving puzzles and utilizing each kid's unique skill set. It's incredible creative, pretty damned funny, and almost impossible for a feeble brain like mine. My buddy Daniel grew up horsing around in mansions as well, and he gives me a call this week to talk about one of the most iconic retro PC games ever made. We had a great time laughing about how tough some of these puzzles were, and dunking on Jeff because the poor guy is as useless as I am. And before we put stuff in microwaves, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone talks about discovering the greatness that is the GBA. A listener corners me over something I said back on RTG #157. And is PS Plus Premium worth it?? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 point and click classics: Sam & Max Hit The Road, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and The Secret of Monkey Island. Learn more about your ad choices. The announcement of a live-action Zelda movie inspired us to return to the ever-giving well of videogame movie and TV adaptations - specifically five that don't have a whole lot to do with their source material. Today, we'll all learn about Maniac Mansion, originally released for the Apple II and Commodore 64 in October of 1987. As part of its story, we'll learn all about the early career of its creator, Ron Gilbert. We'll continue by talking about the creation of the SCUMM game engine, upon which the game was built. Finally, we'll talk about our own experiences with the game. So join us for today's manic episode on yet another trip down Memory Card Lane.
Before Secret of Monkey Island...before Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis...before Sam & Max...there was Maniac Mansion! Learn how the game was made, including the origins of the venerable SCUMM engine, which would be used for nearly every LucasArts adventure title to follow. Discover why Ron Gilbert decided to make Maniac Mansion an adventure game in the first place (hint: it has to do with a certain other company's fiendishly hard adventure titles). And, finally, learn whether it's worth your time today to return to the Edison Mansion. Does Maniac Mansion belong in our Pantheon of Classic Gaming? Listen and find out! Another titan of the game industry, George "The Fat Man" Sanger, joins us live at MAGWest! George has done so much to shape the course of game audio in America that the best we can hope for is scratching the surface with this post. During his career he's worked on numerous games, alongside his legendary group of cowboy composers under the moniker "Team Fat" which consisted of himself, Dave Govett, Joe McDermott and K. Weston Phelan. A short list of projects that George and Team Fat worked on: Thin Ice for Intellivision, Maniac Mansion and Rad Gravity for NES, Zombies Ate My Neighbors on SNES, a litany of computer games including Loom, The 7th Guest, The 11th Hour, Wing Commander I and II, Ultima Underworld, Putt-Putt Goes to the Moon, Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo, Pajama Sam 3, and many other games. He's done work for so many companies it'll be faster to just link to his Wikipedia or Mobygames pages. His influence in PC game music is especially strong. He's created think tanks and collaborated with audio companies which led to the adoption of hardware like the MT-32, General MIDI, and even redbook audio as data on CD-ROM games like the 7th Guest. In the 1990s, he was also one of the first to bring American VGM composers together through "Project Barbecue", an early precursor to events like GameSoundCon, MAGWest and others. We loved every minute of talking with George and hearing his hilarious stories; from his humble beginnings, to his lengthy career and accomplishments, to his work with Team Fat. He is a larger than life character in a suit and cowboy hat and we wouldn't have it any other way. It is the sequel to the 1987 game Maniac Mansion. The plot follows Bernard Bernoulli and his friends Hoagie and Laverne as they attempt to stop the evil Purple Tentacle - a sentient, disembodied tentacle - from taking over the world. The player takes control of the trio and solves puzzles while using time travel to explore different periods of history. The game was released simultaneously on floppy disk and CD-ROM to critical acclaim and commercial success. Critics focused on its cartoon-style visuals and comedic elements. Day of the Tentacle has featured regularly in lists of "top" games published more than two decades after its release, and has been referenced in popular culture. A remastered version of Day of the Tentacle was developed by Schafer's current studio, Double Fine Productions, and released in March 2016, for Windows, OS X, Linux, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita with an Xbox One release in October 2020. ________________________________________________________________________ Grab a beer, a slice of pizza and come hang out with us. Hugo's House of Horrors is a classic adventure game that's actually quite charming. Doubly so when you see how vehemently the designer insists that he'd never heard of Maniac Mansion before making it. We also talk about how J. Jonah Jameson and Cornholio are related, and how Kole's got snakes.

This week we take you through each and every room of this Maniacal Mansion and wrap things up with our review!
Kathleen Robertson visits the YVR Screen Scene Podcast to talk about her years acting on Maniac Mansion and Beverly Hills 90210 and her current gig showrunning Roku's hit series Swimming With Sharks. The last – a dark thriller – is a reimagining of the 1994 film of the same title, about a Hollywood assistant who turns the tables on an abusive boss. But this time, the Hollywood assistant and the abusive boss are women: played by Kiernan Shipka and Diane Kruger respectively. Donald Sutherland, Thomas Dekker, Finn Jones, Erica Alexander, Ross Butler, and Gerardo Celasco also make appearances – as does Kathleen herself. In this fascinating and entertaining interview, Kathleen pulls back the curtain on Swimming With Sharks. She also takes us into her career journey, and talks about reinvention in an industry that isn't always welcoming of women who want to expand into new roles.
