Goblin's Henchman kindly sent me a review of the former Movie Monday feature Dungeonmaster. I decided to give the movie a watch before listening to that review, having missed the movie the first time around. In this episode, I share my thoughts along with those of the Goblin's Henchman-fronted Southwest Sofa Crew. The movie for next month is Matthew Robbins' Dragonslayer from 1981. Submissions required by February 23rd. See details for contacting the show below. Here it is! My first bash at Movie Monday, a feature previously hosted by Jason Connerley over on Nerd's RPG Variety Cast. Jason kindly asked if I could take over hosting the feature, which I was more than happy to do, as he has some other things he would like to devote time to. One such project is his new solo play RPG blog that you can check out here https://nerdsrpgvarietycast.comAs you've probably guessed, this month's movie is Terry Gilliam's classic kids adventure Time Bandits from 1981. A personal favourite. This episode features contributions from: (in order of appearance) Lex Mandrake of Dank Dungeons (on YouTube) Jason Connerley of Nerd's RPG Variety Cast (podcast & blog) Joe Richter of Hindsightless (podcast) Karl Rodriguez of the GMologist Presents… (podcast) Daniel Norton of Bandit's Keep (podcast & YouTube) Anthony “Runeslinger” Boyd of Casting Shadows (podcast, YouTube & blog) Goblin's Henchman (& co.) This episode is primarily a bit of housekeeping, a bunch of stuff that should have been mentioned in the last episode, some end-of-year gaming and the announcement that I will be taking over the hosting of Movie Monday, a feature previously hosted by Jason Connerley over on Nerd's RPG Variety Cast. Movie Monday is a feature in which we choose a movie for listeners to watch each month and send in their thoughts. Those messages are then compiled and shared in an episode that goes out on the last Monday of each month. This month's movie is Terry Gilliam's Time Bandits (1981). Please see the various methods of contacting the show below. I respond to a message from Michael of Mirke the Meek before looking at another bunch of RPG books I picked up this year including Leo Hunt's Vaults of Vaarn Deluxe Edition, Kobayashi's Black Sword Hack - Ultimate Chaos Edition, Laurie O'Connel's Hieronymus: Garden of Earthly Delights Edition, and Brian Yaksha's Throne of Avarice for Best Left Buried.I round things off by talking about a couple of sessions of Castaway by Monolith Games and Stockholm Kartell's Mörk Borg. Honourable mentions: Goblin's Henchman, Cairn 2E by Yochai Gal, Between Two Cairns, Rich Fraser of Cockatrice Nuggets, The Weekly Scroll, A Boy and His Dog Dir. L.Q. Jones, David Black's The Black Hack, Free League's Dragonbane, Barney Dicker of Loco Ludus, and Scott Dorward.Music by Timothy J. I go over my method for providing starting PCs with campaign Lore & Rumors. Plus calls from Jason, Joe, and Daniel. “Whumming” by Goblin's Henchman and another song from Chaos Warband.

After traveling through time, I am back and talking about the first session of Cyberpunk 2020 I ran in more than 30 years! I also give a recap of my surgery and take calls from Runeslinger, Free Thrall, Goblin's Henchman, and Jason. This is pretty much all I can muster for a description. Enjoy!
Calls from the last week of OSR October featuring Jason, Aaron the NPC, Goblin's Henchman, and Joe.
Originally published as "Shooting Ourselves In The Foot During OSR October" a disclaimer has been added to the beginning of this episode and show notes have been updated. Does trying to define the OSR and our internal squabbling hurt the community? I kick off the episode by discussing why the argument of "backstories are lame because someone will show up with a first level character that killed a dragon, and that's just silly" isn't a good argument. Then we get into some calls from Kevin on what to call Jason, from Jason on running games without reading them, and a long call from Karl about Cyberpunk 2020 vs. Cyberpunk Red vs. Shadowrun. I'm lucky enough to be able to end another episode with a fantastic reading about sleeping dragons, though this time not from Safer. No, this time we have Goblin's Henchman on the mic reading an excerpt from a book that sounds super rad! Sound good? I think so!
It's one week into OSR October, and I have a bunch of calls! Please enjoy this “podcast conversation” with Spencer, Jason, Daniel, Kevin, and Goblin's Henchman!
That, my friends, is what you call a click bait title. Beside that, today we're talking crows, books, Bigfoot, nature, aliens, and state-sanctioned spying with calls from Barney, Jason, Spike Pit, B.J., and Goblin's Henchman. It'd be really cool if you checked out this episode!
We're covering a bunch of ground in this mish-mash of an episode. Calls from Goblin's Henchman, Jason, Free Thrall, Runeslinger, and Barney on a variety of various topics. Check it out!
I know, I know. Enough already, right? But there was a big announcement in the world of J.R.R. Tolkien and I want to talk about it and see what y'all think. That's not really much of a show, so I added some rad calls from Jason about Big Trouble in Little China and character growth, as well as a message from Goblin's Henchman where he recounts his super spooky nightmare.
My last two episodes generated a ton of amazing call in's, and I'm sharing them with you here and now! In this episode we'll hear from Goblin's Henchman, Joe the Raven God, Jason of the Variety Cast, and Professor GMologist on a wide range of topics. Today we're covering Icelandic werewolves, free RPG supplements, Sigil & Shadow, and Boba Fett being the most skilled bounty hunter in the galaxy. Then, we'll finish off the episode by talking a bit about hypocrisy. Sound good? Cool. Dive on in!
I finally made it to my mom's house! I received lots of lovely calls from folks wishing me well on my hectic journey, and I'll play a few of those today. Additionally, we'll talk about the awesomeness of apologies, the bad assness of Boba-Fet, the radness of Reever, and the lunacy of lifetime appointments. With me today are a few of the good guys; Jason, Joe Salvador, Free Thrall, and Goblin's Henchman. Check it out!
The moon is out and it's time to howl! We're once more getting wolfie with it with Free Thrall, Goblin's Henchman, and the GMologist. I also give a recap of the epic, 9-hour long, in-person finale of the Good Society rpg that just happened! Don't worry, the recap won't be as long as the session.
Dice are nice, but not everyone thinks so. Today, Jason, Karl, Goblin's Henchman and I are talking when to roll, what to roll, and how much to roll. Let the good times roll!
Today I have session recaps for the last Wrath of the Righteous game I ran and a Rules Cyclopedia game in which I played. I also have some calls from folks yelling at me (not really) about the original TSR D&D games obviously being part of the OSR, and a couple calls from folks that don't think so. It's a fun episode for sure! Gaze in wonder at this cavalcade of coolness, this avalanche of awesomeness, this lineup of absolute legends that blessed me with their voices: Spencer, Taylor, Pink Phantom, Jason, Goblin's Henchman, and Menion aka Rob
For the first time in the history of this show, a caller thinks I had a good idea about old school RPG's and I need to talk about it! Let's also talk about our old man injuries, because through our bleeding we are one! Big thanks to all of the awesome calls from Jason, Runeslinger, Goblin's Henchman, Spike Pit and the Pink Phantom!!!
It's my 13th episode (my three hundredth and thirteenth actually, but who's counting?) so let's get spooky! Today we're talking monsters! More specifically, we're talking vampires and werewolves. Even more specifically, Jason, Runeslinger, Spike Pit, Goblin's Henchman, and Julz tell us if they'd rather be a vampire or a werewolf. Get Down Goblin: https://youtu.be/PoD9gVdeIS4
Gather 'round, my lovelies, listen to the canticle of Diah the Fighter. I don't actually sing, but Diah did hit the table last night in my first ever game of the Rules Cyclopedia version of D&D and I have lots to say about it! We're also diving back into niche protection with some amazing calls from Jogn Allen Large, Goblin's Henchman, Spike Pit and Julz from NZ. Now if that's not a gorgeous lineup, then I don't know what is!
Thorin, now desperate to find new allies to save his people, runs into an old friend, a new friend, and a not at all friend... Thanks to Goblin's Henchman, Jack, and Zapp for the call-ins! Goblin's Hechman's amazing RPG wares and podcast Zapp's Burst System. Be on the lookout for the Zapp's Quest podcast! Logan Howard of Swordbreaker sings the opening theme Jason of the Nerd's RPG Variety Podcast says "% under ability" Menion aka Rob of Confessions of a Wee Timorous Bushi says "3d6 or more, roll under ability" Goblin's Henchman talks about the "genius roll" of "3d6 or more, roll under ability" - his blog article is here. Andrew Walter says "x in 6" but considering ability in setting difficulty Daniel of Bandit's Keep says "for things anyone can try, look to other mechanics; for special skills don't allow non-specialized characters to roll" (Quote marks in notes denote my paraphrasing, not actual quotes. Several call-in messages were omitted.) The Viridian Scroll Alex Schroeder of Halberds and Helmets tunes us out. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/plundergrounds/message

This is the first in a new series of episodes where I'll talk about the book(s) I'm currently reading. I'll sprinkle these J.R.R. Talkin episodes in amongst my regular episodes. All praise to the immortal Goblin's Henchman for this truly genius name! I had to do something with this fantastic name, then Jason called in with a question about a book I was reading. Eureka! The concept of these episodes was born! Today we'll be talking about the 2020 Stephen King book, If It Bleeds.

Boom! You want call in's? I GOT call in's! You tired of hearing my voice on my show, well this is the episode for you! I have messages from some of Anchor's finest. Luminaries from across the podcasting universe have gathered their forces here, on my show, which I'm sharing with you now!. The usual cast of characters are joined by some voices we haven't heard 'round these parts in, as Roland Deschain would so wistfully put it, "delah" Thank you ever so much Barney, Che, Goblin's Henchman, Jason, and Karl for taking the time to leave me a message and for jsut being cool dudes.
I touch on a variety of topics thanks to some great call-ins from Lieren of Updates from the Middle of Nowhere, John Alan Large of Red Dice Diaries RPG Podcast, Joe Hardin of Biggus Geekus, Barney Dicker of Loco Ludus and Goblin's Henchman. Honourable mentions: Safinho of Alone in the Labyrinth, PBTA games, Jackson Malloy's Sword & Scoundrel, Barney Dicker's League of Eternal Guardians. https://free-thrall.itch.io/ More notes to follow... Another great suggestion from Goblin's Henchman! If the world were full of monsters with weird powers and crazy anatomy, surely there would be people who found a use for all these wild resources! Call-in from Chris Shorb suggesting more subgenres to cover! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sword-breaker/support
This was a great suggestion from Goblin's Henchman! Listen to a couple more submissions for my Crazy Chimera Carousel followed by a list of magic items that don't exactly do what was expected! The gauntlet has been thrown down, though not by me. Everything is within our grasp now. There is no problem we can't solve. The impetus for this episode was a slew of very lovely messages I got about my fairy tale. A big, heart-felt thank you to Goblin's Henchman, Logan, Spencer, Barney(?), and Jason, you fellas made my day with those calls. I was nervous as heck putting out that story and I am tickled that it has received such a warm welcome!
Briefly joined by a guest co-host before I dive into a bunch of call-ins from Ivy Shorts of The Happy Whisk, Joe Richter of Hindsightless, Daniel Norton of Bandit's Keep, Jason Connerley of Nerd's RPG Variety Cast, Lieren of Updates from the Middle of Nowhere, Arlen Walker of Live from Pellum's Wasteland and Che Webster of Roleplay Rescues. A more on immersion, a bit of accessibility, (re)defining storytelling games, dice pools, and a little patience. Thank you for all your calls. Honourable mentions: Jeremy "Frothsof" Smith of Thought Eater, Pete Jones of Dragons are Real, Forbidden Lands from Fria Ligan, League of Eternal Guardians by Barney Dicker of Loco Ludus, Andy Goodman of Expedition to the Grizzly Peaks and Grizzly Peaks Radio, Dex by Darren Green, Pip System from Third Eye Games, Goblin's Henchman, Vaesen from Fria Ligan, Shadow of the Demon Lord by Rob Schwalb, Hypertelurians by Frank "Mottokrosh" Reding, Brian of Have to Look That Up, BJ of The Arcane Alienist, Biggus Geekus. Joe Richter of the Hindsightless podcast inspires another episode! This time it's all about Low Fantasy. This is the second episode in a series in which I'm exploring the sub-genres under the "Fantasy" umbrella. I hope my 8 variations will demonstrate that Low Fantasy doesn't mean No Fantasy! This one is a pot pourri of stuff: I'm asking why I keep returning to the specific D&D fantasy thing and suggest a few thoughts around the issue. From there, it's time to catch up on the call-ins from listeners and give some replies. Like I said, it's a bit of a mish-mash. Make of it what thou wilt. Welcome to the first “Webster Burbles About Gaming” episode of Season 7. As promised from the trailer, this episode delivers on the claim that - from time to time - I will have some thoughts and be totally unable to keep them inside. Today I want to highlight and respond to the fact that, as it turns out, I am a pretty lousy communicator. I am also going to share some rather intriguing thoughts about the intersection of WHY we might choose to play with WHAT we might be getting out of the game when we judge it to be “good”. On top of that, I have a truck load of awesome call-ins which I have placed at the back end of the show, allowing those of you who want to get to the meat of the episode to do so quickly while also allowing those of you who enjoy the back-and-forth from the community to get your fix too.Thank you to all of today's callers - Tim, Jason, Goblin's Henchman, Arlen, and Andy. The Roleplay Rescue Dungeon Master's Diary is the Wednesday bonus episode and features me, a microphone, and whatever gaming-related nonsense flows from my mind. This is recorded in short snippets throughout the week and then roughly edited together to form a diary of one man's journey in gaming, shared week-by-week. It's raw, glaringly personal, and not everyone's cup of tea. This week was another toughy, so forgive the mentions of work and how that is screwing with my confidence. Thanks for listening. Game on! Today's episode arose from another one of those moments in which I couldn't keep the passion of the topic inside any longer. It was also triggered by some pretty disparate experiences in my own gaming coalescing into a moment of clarity. Thus, although I am hoping that clarity can be transmitted during this episode, you'll have to be the judge on whether I manage to pull it off. Thanks to all the callers in this episode: Jason C, Goblin's Henchman, and Rui Lourenco - great stuff and please keep 'em coming!Roleplay Rescue Theme Song and incidental music by TJ Drennon: patreon.com/TJDContact Details:Voice Message: anchor.fm/rpgrescue/messageEmail: hello@rpgrescue.comPatreon: patreon.com/rpgrescueBlog: roleplayrescue.comMeWe Group: mewe.com/join/roleplayrescue (or search "Roleplay Rescue")Facebook Page: facebook.com/roleplayrescue (or search "Roleplay Rescue")Twitter: @ubiquitousrat Hosted on Acast.
