Between 1933 and 1946, John A. Lomax made some 80 hours of recordings in the state of Texas, his home state. (John was born in Mississippi in 1867, but his family moved to rural Bosque County, Texas, near Waco, just after his second birthday.) It's a massive amount of material, reflecting an extraordinary diversity of vernacular traditions, and featuring the first and last recordings that John made. We've labored for quite a few years to secure the funding to digitize, catalog, and make available the collection in its entirety, but have to date come up short. In 2020 our colleagues at the Library of Congress' American Folklife Center kindly provided us with the transfers they'd done some years earlier of the ten hours of Texas recordings that John and his second wife Ruby Terrill Lomax (“Miss Terrill,” as he always called her) made in the spring of 1939—our idea being that this discrete collection could function as a representative sample of all the Lomax Texas material while we continue our efforts to digitally preserve and make the entirety available. With the support of the National Endowment for the Arts, we digitally cataloged all of the ‘39 recordings and prepared the catalog for inclusion in the Lomax Digital Archive, where they are now available for your exploration and enjoyment (here). 1. Gonzalo Lopez who's responsible? #CollinsFamily #Escapedprisoner #TexasCorrections #RobertHurstNew details have emerged revealing how convicted murderer Gonzalo Lopez escaped a prisoner bus in Texas and what he did before killing a family of five, police say. Lopez's escape last month triggered one of the largest inmate search efforts in state history as hundreds of officers scoured the wooded area where he was believed to have been hiding. Authorities say the fugitive killed a family in their Leon County home last week, and he later died in a shootout with police. Just days before he killed 66-year-old Mark Collins and his four grandsons, Lopez broke into a neighboring property, according to spokesman Robert Hurst of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Collins and his grandchildren had been visiting the family's weekend ranch outside Centerville, Texas, located near where the inmate had escaped three weeks prior and within the perimeter police were searching following the escape, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Lopez broke into the neighboring home of the sprawling Collins ranch property "24-48 hours in advance" of his attack on the family, Hurst said. No one was home at the neighboring house at the time. Law enforcement officials did not appear to alert residents that there were signs of suspicious activity at the home next to the ranch, according to CNN conversations with local residents. In response to questions about why locals were not alerted as soon as law enforcement suspected a break-in had taken place, a Texas prison spokesman said DNA testing was needed to confirm it was Lopez who broke into the home.

Gonzalo Lopez the hunt is over, #GonzaloLopez #FugitiveEnforcement #nypd #escapedprisoner One of the most dramatic manhunts in Texas history ended late Thursday when a convicted murderer who had escaped from a prison bus last month was killed in a shootout with the police, hours after he became the prime suspect in the killing of five people at a home, the authorities said. The convict, Gonzalo Artemio Lopez, had been the prime suspect in the murders of four minors and one adult whose bodies were discovered on Thursday at a home near where he had escaped in May. The authorities said he had taken a vehicle from the home, a white Chevrolet Silverado, to drive out of the area. Late on Thursday night, police officers in Jourdanton, Texas, spotted Mr. Lopez, 46, driving the missing vehicle and disabled it by putting spike strips on the road, Jason Clark, the chief of staff at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, told reporters. Jourdanton is south of San Antonio and more than 200 miles southwest of the area where Mr. Lopez had escaped. After a short chase, Mr. Lopez crashed the vehicle into a tree and began shooting at the officers, who returned fire and ultimately killed him, Mr. Clark said. Mr. Lopez, who was armed with an AR-15 rifle and a pistol, fired several rounds at the officers but none of them were struck, he added. “I will tell you that we are breathing a sigh of relief that Lopez will not be able to hurt anyone else,” Mr. Clark said. When Mr. Lopez escaped from a prison bus on May 12, he had been serving sentences for crimes that included killing a man with a pickax. After his escape, he topped the state's most wanted list, and by the time he was killed, the authorities were offering $50,000 in exchange for information leading to his arrest and conviction. The bus Mr. Lopez escaped from last month had been transporting him and 15 other inmates to a medical appointment. As it approached Centerville, a city about halfway between Houston and Dallas on Interstate 45, he broke free of his shackles, attacked the driver and drove the bus for a mile before losing control and escaping into a cow pasture.

Tropical storm watches were posted Thursday for Florida, Cuba and the Bahamas as the system that battered Mexico moves to the east. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said the storm once known as Agatha in the Pacific Ocean will be known as Alex in the Atlantic Ocean basin. Texas prison officials say a convicted murderer on the run since escaping a prison bus after stabbing its driver last month has been fatally shot by law enforcement after he killed a family of five and took their truck. State prison system spokesman Jason Clark says Gonzalo Lopez was killed about 35 south of San Antonio late Thursday. Lopez was thought to be hiding near Centerville, Texas, when they received a call from someone concerned after not hearing from an elderly relative. Officers went to a weekend cabin near Centerville and found the bodies of one adult and four minors. Authorities say the family was from Houston. Officials say law enforcement officers and Lopez exchanged gunfire before he was fatally shot. President Joe Biden has delivered an impassioned plea to Congress to act on gun control. In an address to the nation Thursday night, he called on lawmakers to restore limits on the sale of assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines. He says that if legislators fail to act, voters should use their “outrage” to turn gun violence into a central issue in November's midterm elections. Biden is trying to drive up pressure on Congress to pass stricter laws, though such efforts have failed in the wake of past violence. The speech follows recent mass shootings in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Uvalde, Texas and Buffalo, New York. One hundred days into Russia's invasion of Ukraine, numbers tell the tale of the death, destruction and economic havoc caused by Europe's worst armed conflict in decades. The counts, while often just estimates, are staggering: Tens of thousands of civilians and soldiers likely killed. Millions more forced to flee the country or internally displaced. Factories, hospitals, bridges, schools and residences destroyed. Dubai police say they have arrested and plan to extradite a British man wanted in Denmark over a $1.7 billion tax fraud case. Dubai police on Friday identified the man as Sanjay Shah and said his arrest came after Denmark signed an agreement in March allowing for extradition between the United Arab Emirates and Denmark. U.N. experts say Afghanistan's Taliban rulers are maintaining close ties with al-Qaida as they consolidate control over the country, and their main military threat is coming from the Islamic State extremist group and guerrilla-style attacks by former Afghan government security personnel. The experts said in a new report to the U.N. Security Council that with the onset of better weather, fighting may escalate as both Islamic State and resistance forces undertake operations against Taliban forces. But the experts said neither the Islamic State nor al-Qaida “is believed to be capable of mounting international attacks before 2023 at the earliest." After months of robust hiring, U.S. employers might have pulled back slightly in May, to levels that would still be consistent with a healthy job market, despite high inflation and rising borrowing costs. Economists have estimated that the nation added a solid 325,000 jobs last month, down from 428,000 in both March and April. If so, that would snap a record-breaking streak of 12 straight months in which job growth had topped 400,000. The unemployment rate is expected to slip to 3.5% — matching a half-century low — from 3.6%. The May jobs report the government will issue Friday coincides with inflation near a four-decade high. A Texas state senator says the commander at the scene of a school shooting in Texas was not informed of panicked 911 calls from inside the school building. Sen. Roland Gutierrez said during a news conference Thursday that the pleas for help from people inside Robb Elementary School in Uvalde did not make their way to school district police Chief Pete Arredondo. The Democratic senator who represents the city called it a “system failure” that the calls were going to city police but not communicated to Arredondo. The head of the Texas Department of Public Safety has said police didn't confront the gunman more quickly because Arredondo believed the situation had morphed from an active shooting to a hostage situation. Nineteen children and two teachers died. The Celtics strike first in the NBA Finals, the Yankees take a pair from the Angels and the Avalanche go up 2-0 in the NHL's Western Conference finals. The House Judiciary Committee held a hearing Thursday on a bill that would raise the age limit for purchasing a semi-automatic rifle from 18 to 21. The bill would also make it a federal offense to manufacture or possess large-capacity magazines, and would create a grant program to buy back such magazines. With Republicans mostly opposed, the Senate is unlikely to take up the bill, but senators from both parties are working privately on separate legislation they hope can succeed. Police say a man who blamed his surgeon for ongoing pain after a recent back surgery bought an AR-style rifle hours before opening fire at a Tulsa, Oklahoma, medical office, killing the surgeon and three other people before fatally shooting himself. Tulsa Police Chief Wendell Franklin identified the shooter as 45-year-old Michael Louis. He says the gunman had recently undergone back surgery and had called a clinic repeatedly complaining of pain. Franklin says the doctor who performed the surgery, Dr. Preston Phillips, was killed Wednesday, along with Dr. Stephanie Husen, receptionist Amanda Glenn and patient William Love. The Biden administration says children under 5 may be able to get their first COVID-19 vaccination doses as soon as June 21, if federal regulators authorize shots for the age group as expected. White House COVID-19 coordinator Ashish Jha outlined the administration's planning Thursday for the last remaining ineligible age group to get shots. Buckingham Palace says Queen Elizabeth II will not attend a church service to mark her Platinum Jubilee after experiencing “discomfort” at events on Thursday. The palace says that with “great reluctance” the 96-year-old monarch has decided to skip Friday's service at St. Paul's Cathedral. The palace says “the queen greatly enjoyed today's Birthday Parade and Flypast but did experience some discomfort.” Britain is marking the monarch's 70 years on the throne with four days of events over a long holiday weekend. Elizabeth is Britain's longest-reigning monarch and the first to serve for seven decades. Many royal followers camped out overnight in London in hopes of getting a glimpse of the queen. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says if Russia prevails in its war in Ukraine “then the dark times will come for everyone” in Europe. Addressing the parliament in Luxembourg via a video link on Thursday, Zelenskyy said: “If we win this war, all Europeans will be able to continue enjoying their freedom.” “But if this one person who wants to destroy any freedom in Ukraine and Europe prevails, then dark times will come for everyone on the continent,” he added, referring to the Russian president, Vladimir Putin. He said Russia currently controls almost 20% of Ukraine's territory, an area larger than Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg combined, and that “tens of thousands” of people have died in the first 99 days of the war. The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed handing more power to states and tribes to block major energy projects based on water quality concerns. The proposal would undo a Trump-era rule that restricted local regulators' authority to stand in the way of fossil fuel development. The new proposal would allow states to conduct a broader, more flexible review before making a permitting decision. The public will have time to weigh in on the proposal. For now, the Trump-era rule will remain in place. A stronger-than-expected economic recovery from the pandemic has pushed back the go-broke dates for Social Security and Medicare, but officials warn that the current economic turbulence is putting additional pressures on the bedrock retirement programs. The annual Social Security and Medicare trustees report released Thursday states that Social Security's trust fund will be unable to pay full benefits in 2035, instead of last year's estimation of 2034. The projected depletion date for Medicare's trust fund for inpatient hospital care moved back two years to 2028 from last year's forecast of 2026. President Joe Biden says he wasn't briefed on the prospect of nationwide shortages of infant formula for about two months. And he's acknowledging the strain on families while his administration struggles to address the situation. Yet company executives at a meeting Biden hosted from the White House on Wednesday told the president they knew the substantial impact that the shutdown of a major production plant in February would have on the U.S. supply almost immediately. The OPEC oil cartel and allied producing countries including Russia will raise production by 648,000 barrels per day in July and August, offering modest relief for a global economy suffering from soaring energy prices and the resulting inflation. The decision Thursday steps up the pace by the alliance, known as OPEC+, in restoring cuts made during the worst of the pandemic recession. The group had been adding a steady 432,000 barrels per day each month to gradually restore production cuts from 2020. The move to increase production faster than planned comes as rising crude prices have pushed gasoline to a record high in the U.S. Fewer Americans applied for jobless aid last week and the number of Americans collecting unemployment remain at historically low levels. Applications for unemployment benefits fell by 11,000 to 200,000 for the week ending May 28, the Labor Department reported Thursday. First-time applications generally track the number of layoffs. The four-week average for claims, which evens out some of the weekly volatility, dipped by 500 from the previous week to 206,500. The total number of Americans collecting jobless benefits for the week ending May 21 fell from the previous week, to 1,309,000, the fewest since Dec. 27, 1969. —The Associated Press See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Texas manhunt in second week with no signs of escapee #GonzaloLopez #TexasDepartmentofCorrection A convicted murderer who was being transported in a Texas prison bus last Thursday allegedly cut through metal, attacked an officer and ran into woods nearby. He has not been seen since -- prompting what officials say is one of the largest search efforts for an escaped inmate in the state's history. Gonzalo Lopez, 46, has been convicted of capital murder, attempted capital murder and aggravated kidnapping, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. He was added to the state's 10 Most Wanted Fugitives List, with authorities offering up to $50,000 for information that leads to his capture. Here's what we know about Lopez and his escape. He was serving two life sentences Convicted in Texas of two counts of aggravated assault in 1996, Lopez received two eight-year sentences, according to the state's public safety department. In 2006, he was convicted of capital murder and aggravated kidnapping and sentenced to life in prison, the department said. The following year, he was handed a second life sentence for an attempted capital murder conviction, according to the department. "He's got a life sentence for a capital murder, where he killed a man with a pickaxe and he's also gotten an attempted capital murder conviction for shooting a gun at a police officer," Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesperson Robert Hurst said at a Friday news conference. "He's somebody who is very dangerous." Lopez also had several other offenses on his record dating back to at least 1994, according to TDCJ records. He is affiliated with the Mexican Mafia and has ties to the Rio Grande Valley area -- including Weslaco and Mercedes -- and San Antonio, the state's public safety department said. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/otcpod1/support
Search for escaped inmate new information #GonzaloLopez #RobertHurst #TexasDepartmentofCorrections After an exhaustive ground and air search in Leon County, the search for escaped inmate Gonzalo Lopez is entering a new, expanded phase, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) said Friday. A $50,000 reward is now being offered for information leading to the capture of Lopez. Editor's note: The above video originally aired on May 19. Last Thursday, May 12, Lopez escaped custody by shedding his shackles and cutting through a metal barrier on a prison bus before stabbing a correctional officer. Video from a witness showed Lopez running through a wooded area. RELATED: More coverage of search for Gonzalo Lopez The renewed focus by the Texas Rangers, U.S. Marshals and other law enforcement agencies "is to leave no stone unturned as they follow leads and track Lopez's whereabouts," TDCJ said Friday. A separate contingent of TDCJ personnel will remain in Leon County to conduct "strategic searches of areas outside the original secured perimeter." “Anyone who has knowledge of Lopez's location should come forward,” said Inspector General Cris Love. “Those found to be helping or harboring him not only will face arrest and prosecution, but I believe they are putting themselves in danger. Lopez has a complete disregard for human life and will do what it takes to avoid capture. We will take this investigation wherever it leads us until Lopez is back in custody.” Lopez, a known killer with a violent history, is approximately 6 feet tall and 190 pounds and was last seen wearing white clothing in a wooded area off of Highway 7 in Leon County. Those with information on the suspect should call TDCJ OIG Crime Stoppers at 1-800-832-8477 or 936-437-5171 or call 911 immediately. Week one of search for Texas prison escapee Until now, the search to find Lopez focused in Centerville, about two hours north of Houston, and the surrounding area. “He's crafty," Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Robert Hurst said. "He's done this before down in South Texas in Webb County he hid out for almost nine days.” On Wednesday, we got a better idea of what those search efforts look like when TDCJ released a video showing hundreds of officers marching through the brush acre-by-acre. They even showed a pop-up city that developed on the cow pastures around Centerville. Also Wednesday, authorities released photos of Lopez that were taken by surveillance cameras shortly before he boarded the bus last Thursday. Hurst said they haven't found any suspicious activity, but as the manhunt continues, he had a message to the community. "This is a very dangerous man. Back in 2005, he killed someone with a pickax. In 2004, he shot at an officer. If he has that device, whatever he used to cut through the door and also stab the officer, folks to need to be aware he may still have that on him," Hurst said. Credit: Texas Department of Criminal Justice Hurst said it's still unclear if anyone from the inside helped him get away and also said it's unclear if the bus was being followed. “There is no indication that there was anything of a suspicious nature from the time that bus left Gatesville until the time of the accident," Hurst said. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/otcpod1/support
Search for escaped inmate week 2 #GonzaloLopez #MexicanMafia #PrisonBus #Shackles #RobertHurst Capital murderer Gonzalo Lopez remains on the run in Leon County, now for a full week. There are still no confirmed sightings of Lopez or any evidence to indicate he escaped this area, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Highway 7 still remains closed to through traffic. In new information from TDCJ, they discovered there was no other suspicious activity during the time Lopez was being transported from Gatesville to Huntsville for a medical appointment. Corrections officials determined he escaped his restraints and somehow was also able to cut through a metal barrier door to attack the driver. Other than that activity, they have no reason to think he hitched a ride or stole a vehicle after the escape. They are also making provisions for bad weather possibly coming this weekend. ”The department is making contingencies of getting rain gear for our officers, making sure everyone is well protected with the severe weather coming in. So we will not call off this search because of bad weather. We will continue looking for him, we will just make the proper plans to get ready for it,” said Robert Hurst, spokesperson for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. There is still a lot of fear and frustration from residents in Leon County, but County Judge Byron Ryder says he links the escaped inmate is still in the area. ”I'm kind of with all the law enforcement, I still think he's here. I think he's maybe hoping to wait them out where they think he's not here and they'll leave. But I do think he's here. They've had a big effort. There are probably 400 to 500 people that are representing five or six different agencies and they're working hard,” said Ryder. The reward for Gonzalo Lopez remains at $50,000. He's an Hispanic male, about 6 feet tall, 190 pounds and last seen wearing his white prison uniform. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/otcpod1/support

Texas inmate escapes ties to Mexican Mafia. #GonzaloLopez #MexicanMafia #Texasinmate #Marshalls — On the heels of an 11-day statewide manhunt in Alabama that ended with a car chase, crash and the death of a female corrections officer, another manhunt is underway for a dangerous escaped inmate — this time in Texas. Investigators are searching for Gonzalo Lopez. The Texas Department of Public Safety identified Lopez as an affiliate of the Mexican Mafia, a violent gang often in control of other gangs to the point of “taxing” them for being on their territory. THE ESCAPE According to the Texas Department of Justice, Lopez made his escape Thursday while on his way from Gatesville, Texas, to a medical appointment in Huntsville, Texas. Somehow as the prison bus was traveling along State Highway 7 in Leon County, officials say Lopez got out of his handcuffs and shackles and went for the driver's area of the prison bus. The driver of the bus put up a fight. But officials say Lopez stabbed the officer in the hand before the officer pulled the bus to the side of the road. Lopez and the officer jumped out of the bus and kept fighting, while another officer in the back of the bus fired two gunshots into the back tires of the bus. From there, the Texas Department of Justice says Lopez hopped back on the bus and drove it full of 15 other inmates another mile down the road. Eventually, investigators reported that Lopez lost control of the bus and ran into a cow pasture. Fortunately, no other inmates escaped custody. Texas inmate escapes by stabbing prison bus driver LOPEZ HISTORY Gonzalo Artemio Lopez, 46, is on the Texas 10 Most Wanted Fugitives List. He is now wanted for escape and aggravated assault of a public servant. In 1996, the Texas Department of Public Safety says Lopez was convicted of two counts of aggravated assault and sentenced to eight years in prison. In 2006, he was convicted of capital murder and aggravated kidnapping in Hidalgo County and sentenced to life in prison. The following year, he received a second life sentence after being convicted of attempted capital murder in Webb County. Investigators report that Lopez is from the Rio Grande Valley area and has ties to Weslaco, Mercedes and San Antonio. The Texas Department of Public Safety said he is an affiliate of the Mexican Mafia. Lopez is described as being 6 feet tall, about 185 lbs. with tattoos on his back, abdomen and chest. Authorities also say he has a burn scar on the right side of his neck. INVESTIGATION Texas authorities are continuing to investigate how Lopez escaped his shackles and handcuffs and took over the prison bus. The manhunt for Lopez continues. Officers were on horseback Sunday scouring rural areas for him as investigators are narrowing their search area. They believe Lopez may still be hiding in the brush somewhere. A $50,000 reward for information leading to Lopez's arrest has been offered. To be eligible for the reward, the Texas Department of Safety says tipsters must give authorities information in one of the following ways: Call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-252-TIPS (8477). Submit a web tip through the DPS website by selecting the fugitive you have information about and then clicking on the link under their picture. Submit a Facebook tip by clicking the “SUBMIT A TIP” link (under the “About” section). Texas 10 Most Wanted fugitives are considered armed and dangerous. Anyone who sees Lopez is urged not to approach him, but instead call 911. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/otcpod1/support
