When he lost Warden Sergio Perez to a preventable health event that cut his life short in his forties, Mr. Mendoza started to ask himself how he, a longtime TDCJ employee and a leader, could be contributing to a culture in which an employee would prioritize work over their own health, and how he could change that by changing himself. He talks about how “we can still be committed, … but not at the cost of neglecting ourselves,” and what TDCJ is doing to shift agency culture to one that values not just the employee, but also the person.Resources to help you prioritize your health:  Order a VirtualCheckup home kit and complete your annual preventive examWondr HealthReal AppealERS Wellness WebinarsFree Virtual Fitness Classes TDCJ Employees Check out TDCJ PEAK Performance Webpage for more info

In Remembrance of James Lynn Baker II, A.K.A “Mr. Jackson” This show takes pride in providing a variety of topics and guests and although we are all different, we are still human beings. We are flawed, we are complex, we are unique, and we all have the potential to serve at the highest levels.  However, some of us take very different paths….dark paths, before we find our true calling. Life for all of us is literally like a pot of boiling water and what we become in that water will determine and define who we become in this finite life. Today's guest will tell the listener how he became hooked on meth and traveled down a dark path that led him on a collision course and a date with destiny with our Dallas SWAT on July 30th, 2008. The Uptown Dallas area was on high alert after several citizens were victimized as they not only lost their property but also their sense of security. Today's guest was the ringleader of these crimes and was captured and sentenced to sixty-five years in the Texas Prison system. In true Shawshank Redemption fashion this guest received help and guidance from the most unlikely of people as he was about to enter the ultra-hot boiling pot of prison life. The coffee bean story was born and applied as today's guest fought, learned, and grew as a person through his journey in the penal system and created a mission to help others and be a change agent as he shared his experience and story with others to try to inspire and motivate others. The Damon West story has been told on many platforms and stages, all across the world, but never from a stage inside of the police department that changed his life fifteen years ago. ATO Family sit back and soak in the coffee bean story and ask yourself, How can I be a change agent in life? Incidents discussed:  Damon West arrest by the Dallas SWAT Unit on July 30th, 2008, for the Uptown Burglaries. Trial, verdict and sentence on May 18th, 2009, for his role in the crimes. Presiding over the proceedings was Judge Mike Snipes. Dallas County jail to TDCJ from 2009- 2015. Show Summary God Trusts You to Go Through This The Polunsky unit, like other prisons in TDCJ, is like its own miniature city within a city. It has a school, a church, a medical facility, and now, it even has its own radio station. 106.5 The Tank is the Polunsky Unit's very own inmate produced radio station. Pre-recorded and broadcast through a low powered radio antenna, the station only reaches as far as the facility parking lot. However, that's plenty far enough for the radio station to make a difference behind the prison fence. We had the privilege of interviewing the man who helped get it all started. Ramy “Megamind” Hozaifeh. We talk about how Tank Nation got started and then we dive a little into Ramy's story and it is inspiring. You'll hear how God protected him all along the way from being “checked” when he first got in. Ramy was convicted through the law of parties and he talks about being bitter at the system and having some questions for God throughout the years. We talk about the programming and the lives being impacted through this method of ministry. You're going to love this episode. And if you're ever close to the unit, tune in to the show. Texas manhunt in second week with no signs of escapee #GonzaloLopez #TexasDepartmentofCorrection A convicted murderer who was being transported in a Texas prison bus last Thursday allegedly cut through metal, attacked an officer and ran into woods nearby. He has not been seen since -- prompting what officials say is one of the largest search efforts for an escaped inmate in the state's history. Gonzalo Lopez, 46, has been convicted of capital murder, attempted capital murder and aggravated kidnapping, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. He was added to the state's 10 Most Wanted Fugitives List, with authorities offering up to $50,000 for information that leads to his capture. Here's what we know about Lopez and his escape. He was serving two life sentences Convicted in Texas of two counts of aggravated assault in 1996, Lopez received two eight-year sentences, according to the state's public safety department. In 2006, he was convicted of capital murder and aggravated kidnapping and sentenced to life in prison, the department said. The following year, he was handed a second life sentence for an attempted capital murder conviction, according to the department. "He's got a life sentence for a capital murder, where he killed a man with a pickaxe and he's also gotten an attempted capital murder conviction for shooting a gun at a police officer," Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesperson Robert Hurst said at a Friday news conference. "He's somebody who is very dangerous." Lopez also had several other offenses on his record dating back to at least 1994, according to TDCJ records. He is affiliated with the Mexican Mafia and has ties to the Rio Grande Valley area -- including Weslaco and Mercedes -- and San Antonio, the state's public safety department said. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/otcpod1/support

Search for escaped inmate new information #GonzaloLopez #RobertHurst #TexasDepartmentofCorrections After an exhaustive ground and air search in Leon County, the search for escaped inmate Gonzalo Lopez is entering a new, expanded phase, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) said Friday. A $50,000 reward is now being offered for information leading to the capture of Lopez. Editor's note: The above video originally aired on May 19. Last Thursday, May 12, Lopez escaped custody by shedding his shackles and cutting through a metal barrier on a prison bus before stabbing a correctional officer. Video from a witness showed Lopez running through a wooded area. RELATED: More coverage of search for Gonzalo Lopez The renewed focus by the Texas Rangers, U.S. Marshals and other law enforcement agencies "is to leave no stone unturned as they follow leads and track Lopez's whereabouts," TDCJ said Friday. A separate contingent of TDCJ personnel will remain in Leon County to conduct "strategic searches of areas outside the original secured perimeter." “Anyone who has knowledge of Lopez's location should come forward,” said Inspector General Cris Love. “Those found to be helping or harboring him not only will face arrest and prosecution, but I believe they are putting themselves in danger. Lopez has a complete disregard for human life and will do what it takes to avoid capture. We will take this investigation wherever it leads us until Lopez is back in custody.” Lopez, a known killer with a violent history, is approximately 6 feet tall and 190 pounds and was last seen wearing white clothing in a wooded area off of Highway 7 in Leon County. Those with information on the suspect should call TDCJ OIG Crime Stoppers at 1-800-832-8477 or 936-437-5171 or call 911 immediately. Week one of search for Texas prison escapee Until now, the search to find Lopez focused in Centerville, about two hours north of Houston, and the surrounding area. “He's crafty," Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Robert Hurst said. "He's done this before down in South Texas in Webb County he hid out for almost nine days.” On Wednesday, we got a better idea of what those search efforts look like when TDCJ released a video showing hundreds of officers marching through the brush acre-by-acre. They even showed a pop-up city that developed on the cow pastures around Centerville. Also Wednesday, authorities released photos of Lopez that were taken by surveillance cameras shortly before he boarded the bus last Thursday. Hurst said they haven't found any suspicious activity, but as the manhunt continues, he had a message to the community. "This is a very dangerous man. Back in 2005, he killed someone with a pickax. In 2004, he shot at an officer. If he has that device, whatever he used to cut through the door and also stab the officer, folks to need to be aware he may still have that on him," Hurst said. Credit: Texas Department of Criminal Justice Hurst said it's still unclear if anyone from the inside helped him get away and also said it's unclear if the bus was being followed. “There is no indication that there was anything of a suspicious nature from the time that bus left Gatesville until the time of the accident," Hurst said. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/otcpod1/support

Search for escaped inmate week 2 #GonzaloLopez #MexicanMafia #PrisonBus #Shackles #RobertHurst Capital murderer Gonzalo Lopez remains on the run in Leon County, now for a full week. There are still no confirmed sightings of Lopez or any evidence to indicate he escaped this area, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Highway 7 still remains closed to through traffic. In new information from TDCJ, they discovered there was no other suspicious activity during the time Lopez was being transported from Gatesville to Huntsville for a medical appointment. Corrections officials determined he escaped his restraints and somehow was also able to cut through a metal barrier door to attack the driver. Other than that activity, they have no reason to think he hitched a ride or stole a vehicle after the escape. They are also making provisions for bad weather possibly coming this weekend. ”The department is making contingencies of getting rain gear for our officers, making sure everyone is well protected with the severe weather coming in. So we will not call off this search because of bad weather. We will continue looking for him, we will just make the proper plans to get ready for it,” said Robert Hurst, spokesperson for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. There is still a lot of fear and frustration from residents in Leon County, but County Judge Byron Ryder says he links the escaped inmate is still in the area. ”I'm kind of with all the law enforcement, I still think he's here. I think he's maybe hoping to wait them out where they think he's not here and they'll leave. But I do think he's here. They've had a big effort. There are probably 400 to 500 people that are representing five or six different agencies and they're working hard,” said Ryder. The reward for Gonzalo Lopez remains at $50,000. He's an Hispanic male, about 6 feet tall, 190 pounds and last seen wearing his white prison uniform. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/otcpod1/support

Show Summary . Darren Wallace served the State of Texas for more than 28 years in various positions with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He began his career working on Death Row as a Correctional Officer, and worked his way up to the role of Senior Warden at one of Texas' largest prisons, housing over 3,000 inmates. Shortly after his retirement, one of Wallace's previous inmates reached out to him to encourage him to apply at a staffing agency for second chances, owing to his leadership inside prison. Wallace is now the Criminal Justice Consultant to Cornbread Hustle, which helps people coming out of prison find meaningful employment. . In this episode I ask Darren about his perspective on inmates when he first started and how that compares to his perspective now. We talk about everything from how and why he got started in corrections, to faith based dorms, to high tax appraisals, to death row, and how he coped with one of his officers being murdered. . Real Prison Real Freedom by Rosser McDonaldAward-Winning ReporterChronicling Transformation of Notorious Texas Inmate and Entire Texas Prison System'Real Prison Real Freedom' by Rosser McDonald Shares the Heartbreaking Life Story and Inspiring Change of Rickie Smith During Time of Major Upheaval with Department of Corrections Itself.Prisons, an integral part of society, generally are not familiar to most people. Length of sentence and treatment by others in the prisons vary widely. The immediate "Man-in-charge" of each prison unit is the warden, who has some flexibility within TDCJ guidelines. Warden Dr. Keith Price gained a reputation for turning around some chaotic prison units. He knows from experience that at best, prisons are very difficult places for people, whether they are behind the bars or in front of them."People that wind up in prison, inmates, generally are society's rejects," Price said. "They've been unable to do the things other people do to make life a success, whether it's because of an abusive parent, addiction to some substance, stupidity, being unable to read or write, they've been failures and have chosen alternate means, that is crime."Price also knows officers have a challenging life, "The correctional officer, has to deal with people so maladjusted that society says they can't live amongst them anymore. It's conflict day after day, hour after hour and it really takes a toll, from broken marriages to financial problems to substance abuse. It's continual."The Texas Prison System was named "one of the best" in the country by a leading penology expert. However, shortly after that, a Federal Judge took control of the entire Texas Department of Corrections for "unconstitutional treatment" of inmates. TDC denied and resisted many of the reforms the judge ordered. The result was chaos. Too few guards, rampant gangs, gang wars and overcrowding were the norm for several years. The court kept control 20 years and finally the prison system adapted to the new (and constitutional) ways of operating. At the same time Texas prison population doubled, and more than doubled, again.During that time, 19-year-old Rickie Smith began a 10-year sentence in TDC on a drug charge. He joined the gang wars, in the Aryan Brotherhood and then made his own personal war with prison officers. He could have been released in a few short years, but, in 3 separate trials juries added 3 ninety-nine-year sentences for him to serve. Trial transcripts have many references in testimonies to how dangerous Rickie Smith is--even calling him "the most violent inmate" in TDC.REAL PRISON / REAL FREEDOM is a biography of Rickie Smith and how his life intersects with the woes of the prison system and with Warden Keith Price.Naturally, he wanted out, knowing that realistically it will never happen. Officials told him he'll never get out. Then came the impossible that shocked everyone, especially Rickie. This is the first book, but Rosser McDonald is an experienced writer. Sixteen years reporting news on TV in Oklahoma and Texas. Then twenty-eight years as a producer at the Radio and Television Commission, SBC. Twelve of those, Rosser produced and scripted documentaries for use on NBC TV stations. Two brought Emmy Award nominations. Garrett was accused of the murder of a Catholic nun that took place on October 31, 1981, when he was 17 years old. According to the prosecution, that morning, Garrett raped, strangled, and killed 76-year-old Sister Tadea Benz in the St. Francis Convent. On November 9, 1981, Garrett, who lived across the street from the convent, was arrested. Garrett was tried and convicted of the crime. He was held at Ellis Unit, north of Huntsville, Texas, which at the time held men on the State of Texas's death row. He was originally scheduled to be executed on January 6, 1992, but after Pope John Paul II asked for clemency, Governor of Texas Ann Richards gave him a temporary reprieve. After Richards's reprieve, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles held a hearing on whether Garrett should receive a commutation to life in prison but the death sentence was retained by a 17 to 1 vote. He was ultimately executed at age 28 at Huntsville Unit on February 11, 1992 by lethal injection. His final meal request was ice cream. The TDCJ website has stated since at least 2012 that "this offender declined to make a last statement. However, there are last words of Garrett reported from the time of execution re-quoted frequently, and reported by APBnews as: "I'd like to thank my family for loving me and taking care of me. The rest of the world can kiss my ass." the Last Word which argues that Garrett was in fact innocent of the crime. He argued that Garrett was the victim of overzealous prosecutors and poor defense attorneys.

When getting to San Antonio after 6 months of being gone and targeting begins and the false intimidation images they tried to add of TDCJ amongst the ones they've had added before for cops because when someone doesn't shut up they will have you killed or intimidate you and I'm not paranoid this is what happens when I journal but my journals and my case has nothing to do with San Antonio they're covering up so much crime they try to plan a murder and I have all the proof
