Elephants are everywhere in Baraboo: painted on the highway overpass, displayed as public art in the park, depicted on murals. But one place they're not anymore: at Circus World. Circus World was the original home to the Ringling Brothers Circus. For more than a hundred years, they've included elephants as part of their circus performances. Today, you can still see circus acts there; they're now owned by the Wisconsin Historical Society. But as of August 27th, there's one mammoth change: no more performing circus elephants. Circus World's last remaining elephants have retired and will now live at a sanctuary in Oklahoma. So what it's REALLY like working with elephants? We spoke with professional circus clown Karen DeSanto. Karen worked for both Ringling Bros. and Circus World. Wanna talk to us about an episode? This bonus episode is part of the Uniquely Wisconsin series, a broadcast and streaming series that spotlights the untold stories of Wisconsinites and highlights the communities in which they live. From the emotional and heartwarming, to the humorous and the historic, the Uniquely Wisconsin brand captures the essence of the people of America's Dairyland. While still a Discover Wisconsin feel, we're doing a deeper dive into the culture that makes up each county and how it forms Wisconsin's culture. This week, we highlight Sauk County. We begin with facts about Sauk County, noting its incredible natural beauty and variety in landscapes, robust towns, and interesting history. Baraboo, the county seat, is home to the Ringling Brothers Circus as well as the AL. Ringling Theater, Mansion, and Brewery. It also offers visitors the Ochsner Park Zoo, Driftless Glen Distillery, Circus World Museum, and nearby access to Devil's Lake State Park. Other places to explore include Reedsburg, Merrimac, Spring Green, Wisconsin Dells, and more.In terms of Community Support, we discussed People Helping People, a nonprofit based in Baraboo founded by Bill & Yvette Harris. Designed to help people pay each other forward, People Helping People programs include “Adopt a Family,” “Stomp Out Hunger,” and “Adopt a Veteran” along with a school supply and work ready program, where they offer mentorship and free career training to those in need.Looking towards the future, Gavin Farms is a place where, at an active farm that dates back generations, people can learn more about caring for animals and the land, where their food comes from, and how you can discover ways to eat local, cleaner, and enjoy more flavor and nutrition from your meals. The natural beauty of Sauk County can be expressed though many examples, and the Great Sauk State Trail is a wonderful way to enjoy them. Wisconsin's newest state trail, it was established in 2017 on an old railroad bed. The Great Sauk Trail provides a beautiful trip through the history and geology of Sauk County, following the Wisconsin River past Prairie du Sac and Sauk City…and then up through the Merrimac area.Tumbled Rock Brewery & Kitchenis an example of the growing craft beer, wine, and spirits trend in Sauk County. Perched right along Highway 136 by the entrance to Devil's Lake State Park, Tumbled Rock offers a variety of unique craft brews, an extensive menu from pizzas to artisan crafted dishes, and an expansive place to sit, relax, and enjoy music between its main restaurant building and the tap room and brewery across the way. You can also enjoy the Baraboo Bluffs Winery, Mead King, and more.We also talked with Melanie Platt-Gibson, Sauk County's Director of Development, who shared more stories with us on what makes Sauk County unique and a great place for both artists and entrepreneurs.Michelle then offers a preview of what we can watch on Uniquely Wisconsin's Sauk County episode online, including stories about Ishnala Supper Club in Lake Delton, Circus World in Baraboo, and the legendary American Players Theater in Spring Green.
Was Kewanee once the home of the World's Largest Horse? Dave Clarke's research indicates it just might be true. Back in the 1920s, Sully Francis, the brother of the man who would give Francis Park to Kewanee, Frederick Francis, was a famed horse breeder. A story in a 1920s edition of the Star Courier claims that Sully Francis owned a horse named Jumbo was more than 3300 pounds in weight. Word of the massive horse traveled around the globe with the biggest paper in Germany at the time proclaiming that Sully Francis of Kewanee, Illinois was indeed, the owner of the World's Biggest Horse. The story is further corroborated by Sully's dealings with the Ringling Brothers Circus which is believed to have taken Jumbo out on tour under a different name due to them already having a world famous Elephant named Jumbo. Dave Clarke lays out the story of Sully Francis and Kewanee's World Largest Horse claim on this edition of Kewanee Back When.

The Greatest Show on Earth -- a slogan adopted in 1919 when The Ringling Brothers Circus combined with the Barnum & Bailey Circus to begin the last ever chapter of the historic American Circus. In a time before YouTube, or television the circus was a seriously big deal. And as long as we have known the circus , it's always been a family affair. The first place the world ever saw such a show, such an idea, was in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Single unit European families began putting on small road shows and traveling from town to town with their unique skills. Tightrope performers, equestrians, acrobats… They lived and worked as a family. And though the Ringling Brothers came along more than a century later, they were no different. They just scaled it up a bit. Hired a few non-blood relative assets. But in the beginning it was truly nothing but a family affair. Just 5 brothers and a crazy dream.Follow:• @bloodandbusiness on tiktok https://www.tiktok.com/@bloodandbusiness?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc• @bloodandbusiness on instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/bloodandbusiness/• YouTube channel:https://youtube.com/channel/UC2gwWBmXHWF6P5zMHcMs98gInstacart - Groceries delivered in as little as 1 hour. Wahpeton was in a tizzy on June 10, 1897 as the Ringling Brothers Circus train pulled into town. A crowd gathered to watch the unloading of the flashy white horses, the exotic animals, and the gaudy circus wagons. Children gathered, hoping to be chosen as temporary help, since the circus gave free tickets to boys who helped to hoist the big main tent.
Welcome to Baraboo, Wisconsin, otherwise known as "Circus City"! Although I'm sure there are a number of interesting things about the town (including a chicken coop renovated into a house), everything else pales in comparison to it's status as "Circus City." Ringling Brothers Circus was established in Baraboo in 1884. Several other circuses followed suit and also called the town home over the years. Circus World Museum opened its doors in the town in 1959 on land originally owned by Ringling. We hope you enjoy us clowning around is this cool little town!
It all started back in 1930 when Nick Bullington was working as an advance man for Ringling Brothers Circus. He discovered a killer bowl of Chile while staying at a San Antonio Hotel. It was the Chili spurred Nick to open his own eatery in downtown Roanoke , Virginia --dubbed the Texas Tavern in homage to the San Antonio hostelry where he fell in love with the Chili. The chili dish is still on the menu and Nick’s grandson Matt Bullington continues his grandfather’s legacy. Not much has changed at all, including the exterior facade, and inside there's the same 1o swivel stools for sitdown dining---Matt says, "we can feed a thousand people--ten at a time". The Chili remains a big draw along with the Cheesy Western burger. Join correspondent Tom Wilmer in downtown Roanoke for a visit with Matt at the legendary Texas Tavern. The Texas Tavern show was originally broadcast back in 2011 and is reposted as a best-of-the-best travel feature in celebration of Journeys of Discovery's 31st

Making Elephants Fly | Conversations with High Octane Leaders, Dreamers, & Creatives
On this BONUS episode of Making Elephants Fly I share with a conversation about inequality and justice. On June 8, 2020 I hosted a conversation with a few of my friends on Facebook LIVE. I wanted to share that with all of you. We focused on how we are better together and how we can actually do something when we stop letting the narrative divide us without ignoring the current reality of what it means to be a person of color in America. I know that I may not say all of the right words, but refuse to be silent do what I have the power to do. What I do best is bring people together to learn so that’s what will do Monday evening. Joining me will be: Aurora Gregory she’s an author, consultant, and an advocate for aspiring entrepreneurs to use their communication skills to make an impact. Scott Harvey is a retired 20-year veteran law enforcement officer and now is someone who speaks to students and corporations about leading well. Lastly and certainly not least the last ringmaster Johnathan Lee Iverson who was the first African American to be a ringmaster for Ringling Brothers Circus and now is currently writing a book about his experiences and is one of the greatest communicators I know. Dr. Shawn Purcell, who teaches jazz guitar and jazz arranging at George Mason University and performs for the U.S. Navy Commodores, provides us with many insights into his story, learning and teaching music at a collegiate level, touring with the Ringling Brothers Circus, and his career as a military musician. Shawn, Joe, and Aaron discuss methodical and efficient practice routines, working with new students to develop these practice routines, and the need to adjust these practice routines to prepare for different sorts of gigs and musical opportunities. Shawn's story takes us from his youthful days of Led Zeppelin, Ozzy Osbourne, Steve Vai, and Van Halen to his college days in which he studied jazz guitar and the recording arts at Duquesne University. Upon graduation he landed a gig touring with the Ringling Brothers Circus, for which he spent two years traveling around the country on a circus train and played guitar for a living. His next stop was eight years as the guitarist for the Air Force's premier jazz ensemble, the Airmen of Note. in 2004, Shawn and his wife, Dr. Darden Purcell, moved to Nashville where he gigged and earned his Master of Arts in Music from Middle Tennessee State University. He gives us details of his experiences in the Nashville music scene. If you thought Shawn had already received a lot of music education, he and his wife then moved to Illinois where he earned his Doctor of Musical Arts in Jazz Performance. After a period of teaching at the National Guitar Workshop, he landed the job as the guitarist for the U.S. Naval Academy Band, and a couple years later he won the position as guitarist for the U.S. Navy Band "Commodores" jazz ensemble in Washington DC. Shawn tells us lots of information about becoming a military musician, the lifestyle, the necessary skills, etc. He stresses the importance of being able to sight read! Finally we get into a deeper discussion about higher education: how to become a music professor, what that experience is like, how universities work, etc. Shawn was one of Joe's jazz guitar teachers at George Mason University, and Shawn's methodical and organized style of teaching helped Joe achieve tremendous growth as a guitarist and as a teacher. Jason Bitsoff comes on the podcast during a heavy hearted time for Feld Entertainment, with the announcement that the Ringling Brothers Circus will end after 146 years of traveling shows. Bitsoff discusses the nature of the decision to end the shows, but also the way that Feld framed the conversation for its sponsors and fans. Bitsoff talks about how partnerships with Feld Entertainment's many show lines, including Disney On Ice, work toward ensuring that activation is measured through data, as the company looks to bolster relationships with its sponsors through experiences. Bitsoff also presents his background as an adjunct sports management professor at Georgetown, and what future students need educated on most.

In the early part of the twentieth century, two young African American albinos from Truevine, Virginia, made their way into a carnival sideshow, or freak show as it was sometimes called then, and disappeared. When Mark Twain visited in 1884, he claimed to spy a little bit of hell in Pittsburgh’s smoky appearance. Twain’s observations are among the many riveting firsthand accounts and anecdotes to be found in the archives of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The Great War hit home after the sinking of the Lusitania, which carried more than a dozen Pittsburgh residents. A few years later, cheering throngs of black and white residents lined downtown streets to welcome African American soldiers returning home from the conflict. The Ringling Brothers Circus held its last outdoor performance here in 1956 and left eight hundred show workers without jobs in the city. With these stories from the archives and more, veteran journalist Len Barcousky shines a light on the hidden corners of Pittsburgh’s history. Until his retirement in 2015, Len Barcousky had been a longtime editor and reporter at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the oldest newspaper west of the Allegheny Mountains. He covered the city’s history in his “Eyewitness” columns, and he received his BA from Penn State and MBA from Columbia University.
