"My journey began after I left my 14th doctor's visit in a single year when I realized I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. My diet growing up was like any other kid in the US, except I was really picky and seemed to prefer all the sweet things. My favorite foods and staples in my diet were cereal, oatmeal, granola bars, pancakes (mmm, my favorite), colorful and sugary yogurts, chocolate milk, chicken fingers, pasta, cookies, and ice cream. Not surprisingly, I was a pretty sickly kid and always struggled with my weight. As I got older, I switched to “whole wheat” and “diet” foods but the sweet tooth was always there and my diet was very heavily carb based. In 2012, in an effort to improve my health, I adopted a real food, paleo diet. I saw huge improvements with my health but after a stressful period in my life, I started gaining weight, getting cystic acne, and I lost my period. I realized I had Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). My PCOS was a hormonal imbalance that caused weight gain and weight loss resistance, cystic acne, and missed periods. No matter how “healthy” I ate, and no matter how much I worked out, I couldn't lose a pound and actually seemed to be gaining! (what the hell?!) I tried to balance my hormones and increase my progesterone but nothing seemed to be working. I felt so defeated and hopeless. Finally I enrolled in nutrition school to become a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (NTP). I learned that at the foundation of all hormonal imbalances is our blood sugar balance. “Blood sugar balance?!,” I thought. “But I don't have diabetes.” I didn't, but little did I know, my blood sugar was completely dysregulated. I constantly ate sweets and craved them. Even though I was eating a healthy Paleo diet, I ate a ton of fruits and starches. I made “Paleo-treats”, binged on dairy-free chocolate chips, and always had to finish a meal with something sweet. If I missed a meal I would be shaky and lightheaded. I would feel “hangry” instead of just hungry. I had been missing what was right in front of me. My blood sugar dysregulation was at the root of my PCOS. In February of 2018, I adopted a real-food, low-carb, high fat (keto) diet and began incorporating fasting (intermittent and prolonged). I am finally able to maintain a comfortable weight and my skin is flawless. My periods are regular and my PMS & cramps vanished. I don't even bloat before my period anymore! After graduating as an NTP, I decided that my mission is to help women discover and improve their blood sugar issues. Research suggests that 1 out of 3 adults has prediabetes. Of this group, 9 out of 10 don't know they have it. 29.1 million people in the United States have diabetes, but 8.1 million may be undiagnosed and unaware of their condition. It is my mission to help women uncover and improve their blood sugar issues so they can feel their best and live long and healthy lives." Let's look at some stats: There are 1.7 million Aussies with type 2 diabetes and 2 million with pre-diabetes 100,000 eye injections are performed for diabetic retinopathy each year 4,000 amputations are performed for gangrenous lower limbs each year 4.5 million hours are spent on dialysis for kidney failure each year Half will suffer from mental health afflictions 70% will develop dementia 80% will succumb to a heart attack or stroke Type 2 diabetes can be devastating for both patients and their families. That these life-changing and life-threatening complications can potentially be avoided. Read Peter's recent article: https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/7338616/its-well-past-time-to-tackle-australias-other-epidemic/ Dr. Peter Brukner OAM is the founder of Defeat Diabetes and not-for-profit SugarByHalf. He is a world-renowned Sports Medicine Clinician and Researcher, formerly the Chief Medical Officer for the Australian Men's Cricket team, and has held similar roles at Liverpool FC, Melbourne and Collingwood AFL clubs, the Socceroos and the Australian Olympic Athletics team. Peter is currently Professor of Sports Medicine at La Trobe University, Victoria. "I am a Sport and Exercise Medicine Physician, and Professor of Sports Medicine at La Trobe University in Melbourne. I have been working with athletes of all sizes, shapes and abilities for 40 years. In that time, I have worked in AFL clubs, Australian Olympic teams, the Socceroos and the Aussie cricket team as well as a stint in the UK as Head of Sports Medicine at Liverpool Football Club. "So why am I here talking to you about diabetes? My father had Type 2 diabetes and I watched as he progressively suffered many of the typical complications. I was determined not to go down the same path. A few years ago, despite eating a so-called healthy low fat diet and exercising regularly, I was significantly overweight, with high triglyceride and insulin levels as well as suffering from a fatty liver. In other words I was pre-diabetic. I decided to try a low carb diet, reducing my intake of sugar and starches. After 3 months the results were incredible. I reversed all my metabolic abnormalities as well as losing 13 kg. I have maintained that way of eating ever since, every blood test comes back absolutely normal. I have no doubt that if I had not made those changes by now I would have Type 2 diabetes. As a result of my own experience and years of intense study of the relationship between diet and metabolic disease, I am now passionate about the real-food way of eating that focuses on healthy proteins and fats, while limiting sugars and processed foods." I'm excited to finally share this Gut Health Q&A Series!I had the chance to sit with the very well-known microbiologist, Kiran Krishnan for a very lengthy discussion on gut health. Can't wait for you to learn about the gut microbiome This episode was originally a video on my YouTube channel.*NOTE: I am not advocating for you to eat prebiotics and vegetables. But I do agree with Kiran that to have proper resilient health, we should be able to *tolerate* plant-based foods, if we choose to—the operative word being choose. ---His recommendations:- Spore Probiotics: https://nutritionwithjudy.com/shopping/supplements/gut-health/megasporebiotic-probiotic/- Restorflora strain: https://nutritionwithjudy.com/shopping/supplements/gut-health/restorflora/- Gut digestive support: https://nutritionwithjudy.com/shopping/supplements/gut-health/megaguard/- Gut Toxin removal: https://nutritionwithjudy.com/shopping/supplements/gut-health/megaigg2000/- Gut support fish oil: https://nutritionwithjudy.com/shopping/supplements/gut-health/megaomega/---Kiran Krishnan is a Research Microbiologist and has been involved in the dietary supplement and nutrition market for the past 16 years. Interesting study on how meditation can improve your health! “Psychological stress typically triggers a fight-or-flight response, prompting corticotropin-releasing hormone and catecholamine production in various parts of the body, which ultimately disturbs the microbiota. In the absence of stress, a healthy microbiota produces short-chain fatty acids that exert anti-inflammatory and antitumor effects. During stress, an altered gut microbial population affects the regulation of neurotransmitters mediated by the microbiome and gut barrier function. Meditation helps regulate the stress response, thereby suppressing chronic inflammation states and maintaining a healthy gut-barrier function. Conclusions • The current research team recommends the integration of meditation into conventional health care and wellness models. Concurrently, studies to explore the effects of meditation on human microbiota are warranted.” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29306937 It is unique analysis to see what is going on “under the hood” and then we can determine your “areas of opportunity” with nutrition and health building lifestyle habits. Ideally, we run the full investigation (my Health (RE) Building Packages) with you to see the WHOLE pictures with other labs to help identify more clues of hidden internal sources of chronic stress but at least you can get a head start into learning more about your gut terrain and status of microbiome with BiomeFX lab test. I can email you a sample lab report if you are curious. The lab test results will provide us with clues towards your areas of opportunities to optimize your health from the inside out. Read more about the test and analysis on my blog here As you know, I have been focusing continuing education over the past ten years to become certified as a Functional Nutritional Therapist, Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner, CHEK Holistic Lifestyle Coach, Ben Greenfield's Kion (plus Superhuman Coach) health coach and more trainings. Since high school, I was always interested and curious about nutrition, health and exercise as we need it all – as what I term “The WHOLESTIC Method” to be fit and healthy from the inside out. One of my favorite quotes is “you can't out exercise a bad diet” and “you can't out supplement poor lifestyle habits”. More than ever, we should be striving to feel our best each day by running well chosen functional lab tests (test and assess instead of guessing!), investigating the external and internal sources of chronic stressors (inflammation) and then creating an individualized “D.R.E.S.S. for Health Success” protocol. What are you doing now to build your immune system and resiliency? I have been blogging and podcasting since March about the immune system and ways we can build our resiliency. Tune in to my weekly blogs and podcasts here. Let me know if you want to chat about different options for you to take ownership of your health to burn fat, optimize your gut function and improve the aging process by scheduling a time with me here to dive in deeper to your needs and goals. I am focused on helping and guiding individuals to live their best life and feel their best self each day! You should wake up feeling energized and thriving each day. If not – let's investigate WHY not so you feel your best each day!
