[17:30] Feedback Systems, Prolonged Insulin Levels, and the Balancing Act of Blood Sugar Regulation -       The body has feedback systems to stabilize blood sugar, such as the release of stored sugar (glycogen) from the liver and the ability to burn body fat for energy. -       High insulin levels, which may persist longer than elevated blood sugar, can go undetected for an extended period. -       Elevated insulin levels over time can lead to a buildup in the blood. -       High insulin levels interfere with the body's ability to utilize stored sugar from the liver, preventing it from entering the system for energy use. -       The continuous presence of insulin signals the body to store fat instead of burning it. [23:30] Protein First: A Blueprint for Satiety, Tissue Repair, and Blood Sugar Stability -       Eating protein first is recommended as it helps the body reach its protein threshold, crucial for rebuilding tissues with amino acids. -       Prioritizing protein ensures that the body receives the necessary amount of this essential macronutrient. -       When protein is consumed first, it naturally regulates appetite, making it easier to recognize satiety. -       By reaching the protein threshold, the body signals fullness, preventing overconsumption of other items on the plate. -       Protein is the most satiating macronutrient and contributes to stabilizing blood sugar levels. [33:10] Navigating Individual Responses with Continuous Glucose Monitors and Personalization -       Continuous glucose monitors are valuable tools, but individual responses to various factors must be considered. -       Personal factors such as sleep quality, exercise intensity, hormonal fluctuations, stress levels, and mineral balance can significantly impact blood sugar responses. -       The key is recognizing the need for personalization and understanding that what works for one person may not work the same way for another. -       General starting points for blood sugar management are helpful, but there is a need for more granularity and personalization. A recently published study by the Journal of American College of Cardiology found that only 6.8% of American adults had optimal metabolic health. How does one best manage their hormones when heading into the perimenopausal state as it relates to blood sugar regulation? I'm terrified of feeling my emotions and don't even know where to start. How do I navigate the emotional work without falling apart? How do I discover what's really at the root of my addiction to sugar? Dani H. Is eating whole fruits (dried or fresh) going to cause insulin resistance the same way that sugar or sweets or breads etc... will? Also, what would the best options be when someone wants a little something sweet? My blood sugar is usually around 108-120 in the morning after waking up.  I want to get it below 100. I do not want diabetes. I know I have insulin resistance issues. I am post menopausal. I  take excellent blood sugar supplements and exercise. I eat healthy and have been trying more plant based eating, always with a lot of vegetables. I still have meat once in a while. What is the best way to bring this number down in the morning and stay more balanced throughout the day? My father is diabetic and I do not want to end up there. Thank you! 44 years old. Fasting blood sugar is never good— always 100-115 in the morning (7am-noon) no matter if I ate at 11pm or hadn't eaten for 18 hours and no matter how little or much sugar I ate.  Thyroid labs all normal, but many symptoms of hypothyroid- weight gain, fatigue especially. Chicken or the egg here? Thyroid causing issues with blood sugar or blood sugar causing issues with thyroid? Or something else completely? Nothing seems to move the needle on either except thyroid speeding up if things move toward the hyper side of range or just out… but not sure what made that happen in the first place. Losing hope and money trying to stop this and heal since labs are in range- western med drs are useless. It's in my head, right, hah.  Holistic drs have only helped me with parts of healing (no more mold, candida, etc), but no one can solve the weight and exhaustion issue. What is your hunger telling you? How do you feel after you eat certain foods? These questions are central to the discussion Danielle brings to the table to better help us understand our bodies. Danielle Hamilton is a functional nutritional therapy practitioner and restorative wellness practitioner who specializes in blood sugar regulation and digestion. She became interested in blood sugar issues when she learned that insulin resistance was at the root of her PCOS. Her mission has become to help others uncover their blood sugar and insulin issues in order to improve health, and reject the feeling that your body hates you. “I never wanted anyone to feel like there's no hope. There's hope for these problems. You can get better, no matter how hard it is. We shouldn't be forcing treatments down someone's throat. This gave me the motivation to find a way to reverse the problems on my own.” Blood sugar frustrations Diabetes is one of the leading causes of early death. Insulin doesn't fix this problem, it manages this problem. Insulin is a hormone that tells the body to store sugar, and it blocks fat burning, so it blocks you from accessing metabolic flexibility and tapping into stored sugar. When this happens, the emergency light comes on and it feels like we're running out of energy, which signals hunger to our body. But it's not always a healthy hunger. PCOS is the diabetes of the ovaries, and as you look at how your body reacts to the food we eat, we see that blood sugar is at the heart of every hormone issue. “Insulin resistance is a state of carbohydrate intolerance. So if you're having too much for your body, then it's not good for your body, even if it's healthy carbs.” Blood sugar empowerment The body runs on nutrients, not on calories or sunshine, so we need to extract the nutrients from our food. Every person who has had a successful dietary change has done so because they didn't create an unhealthy relationship with food. It feels like a choice, not a shameful event. “What shifted for me,” says Danielle, “is that I want to feel good. So I eat in a way that makes me feel good. It feels very empowering. We're making these choices because we are dialed into knowing how these foods make us feel.” Danielle assures that these changes aren't a pathway to never enjoying food or life. You can find flexibility in knowing what works for your body and what doesn't feel good for your body, to remove the rigidity of restriction and scarcity in what we eat. "My journey began after I left my 14th doctor's visit in a single year when I realized I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. My diet growing up was like any other kid in the US, except I was really picky and seemed to prefer all the sweet things. My favorite foods and staples in my diet were cereal, oatmeal, granola bars, pancakes (mmm, my favorite), colorful and sugary yogurts, chocolate milk, chicken fingers, pasta, cookies, and ice cream. Not surprisingly, I was a pretty sickly kid and always struggled with my weight. As I got older, I switched to “whole wheat” and “diet” foods but the sweet tooth was always there and my diet was very heavily carb based. In 2012, in an effort to improve my health, I adopted a real food, paleo diet. I saw huge improvements with my health but after a stressful period in my life, I started gaining weight, getting cystic acne, and I lost my period. I realized I had Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). My PCOS was a hormonal imbalance that caused weight gain and weight loss resistance, cystic acne, and missed periods. No matter how “healthy” I ate, and no matter how much I worked out, I couldn't lose a pound and actually seemed to be gaining! (what the hell?!) I tried to balance my hormones and increase my progesterone but nothing seemed to be working. I felt so defeated and hopeless. Finally I enrolled in nutrition school to become a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (NTP). I learned that at the foundation of all hormonal imbalances is our blood sugar balance. “Blood sugar balance?!,” I thought. “But I don't have diabetes.” I didn't, but little did I know, my blood sugar was completely dysregulated. I constantly ate sweets and craved them. Even though I was eating a healthy Paleo diet, I ate a ton of fruits and starches. I made “Paleo-treats”, binged on dairy-free chocolate chips, and always had to finish a meal with something sweet. If I missed a meal I would be shaky and lightheaded. I would feel “hangry” instead of just hungry. I had been missing what was right in front of me. My blood sugar dysregulation was at the root of my PCOS. In February of 2018, I adopted a real-food, low-carb, high fat (keto) diet and began incorporating fasting (intermittent and prolonged). I am finally able to maintain a comfortable weight and my skin is flawless. My periods are regular and my PMS & cramps vanished. I don't even bloat before my period anymore! After graduating as an NTP, I decided that my mission is to help women discover and improve their blood sugar issues. Research suggests that 1 out of 3 adults has prediabetes. Sadly, Danielle was always spitting up - she had eczema, ear infections and needed to get her tonsils out. After removing her tonsils, Danielle developed tons of allergies and asthma. Sadly, she didn't realize that tonsils were part of her immune system. Unfortunately, Danielle was getting five allergy shots three times a week! Plus, she was taking numerous medications and was on multiple inhalers. So, she started eating keto and fasting and reversed her PCOS, allergies, and asthma.  [09:55] Why Fasting Is Crucial To Making Insulin Hormones More Sensitive Our bodies become resistant to things really fast. When there are insulin levels in the blood, your body is becoming resistant to it. Intermittent fasting is a really great way to help to lower insulin levels. That way, you can become more sensitive to insulin. Fasting is the number one way to improve our insulin sensitivity. [13:10] How Industrial Seed Oils Are Contributing To Insulin Resistance Industrial seed oils are directly causing insulin resistance. Here are the oils to look out for: Vegetable Oils Soy Sunflower Corn Canola Safflower Cottonseed Grapeseed Rice Bran They will cause your body to have insulin resistance and also block your body's own fat burning. As the fats become part of us, then they interfere with the body's ability to burn its own body fat. A lot of people are stuck because they have this toxic body fat from seed oils. [14:50] Why You Should Steer Away From Processed Carbs The more you process a carbohydrate, the more likely it is to spike your blood sugar because you're removing the fiber. It's better to eat fruit than a smoothie. In a smoothie, you have really pulverized that fiber. Any sort of carbohydrate that is has been processed is really going to spike your sugar. Plus, carbs are addictive. [17:30] The Problem With Snacking & Why It Could Be Damaging Your Health There is no such thing as a healthy snack. However, if you are working on actively healing your reactive hypoglycemia, you may need to eat more frequently. Most of the time, snack foods are high in carbohydrates. Even if your snacks are not high in carbs, then it will affect your blood sugar. Danielle says it's better to have a dessert than it is to have a snack. Your body is not meant to digest food all day. [21:55] Building Muscle Will Be Critical For Insulin Sensitivity   When you build muscle, it becomes like a sink for insulin and glucose. Muscles are some of the first tissues and cells in the body to become insulin resistant after the fat cells. Muscle building activities are really good for insulin sensitivity because it creates more space. The intensity of the workout is really helpful for insulin sensitivity as well. Working out to fatigue is going to be something to help to build muscles and burn up all the excess glucose. [23:30] How To Improve Insulin Sensitivity With Relaxation And Meditation Stress will undo whatever you do nutritionally. Stress will cause cortisol. Then, cortisol will make you insulin resistant. Chronic stress will elevate blood sugar over time. So, set boundaries and cut relationships with toxic people. However, if you can't change your circumstances, then you need to find time to get your body out of stress. Danielle loves to do breathing exercises. [34:10] How Does Improving Sleep Help With Improving Your Glucose And Insulin Levels? If you're tired, you will automatically gravitate to higher glucose and carb-filled foods. Also, if you have insulin resistance and glucose dysregulation, you're going to have a hard time sleeping. So, it is a very multi-dimensional approach to improving your sleep. Tape your mouth, make sure your room is dark and improve your bedtime routine. Lastly, get outside in the morning and get sunshine on your face. [37:00] About The Amazing Gallbladder And Its Relationship With Fat Digestion We need digestion to work beautifully to see benefits in our health. The liver is dripping bile into our gallbladder. When meals come, we have a good amount of bile. The bile will act as dish soap. Its job is to emulsify the fats, so we can actually absorb them. If we are not breaking fats down, we can't absorb them. Do you have chronic constipation? Do greasy meals kind of run right through you? Those are all signs that your gallbladder needs some love and support, and attention. Stay calm at meals and chew your food to have a really good digestive experience and digestive process.
