How Liver Congestion Impacts Brain Function In this episode, we dive into the connection between liver congestion and brain health, focusing on how toxin buildup and blood-brain barrier dysfunction can contribute to brain fog, cognitive decline, and neuroinflammation. A congested liver allows toxins to leak into the bloodstream, which can reach the brain, impairing function. We also explore the gut-liver-brain axis, the role of vagal tone in detoxification, and how chronic stress exacerbates liver dysfunction, leading to cognitive issues. We discuss holistic strategies to support liver and brain health, such as: Supporting bile flow and liver detox with nutrient-dense foods (cruciferous vegetables, bitter greens, and lemon water). Strengthening vagal tone through breathwork, deep breathing, and cold exposure. Supporting gut health and reducing toxin load with probiotics and digestive aids. D.R.E.S.S. Protocol for Liver Health FDN Practitioners use the D.R.E.S.S. for Health Success® framework to restore liver function naturally: Diet: Focus on nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory foods, like cruciferous vegetables and bitter greens, while reducing liver stressors like processed foods and alcohol. Rest: Ensure 7-9 hours of quality sleep to optimize liver detoxification. Exercise & Movement: Encourage daily movement (walking, strength training) to support lymphatic drainage and avoid overtraining. Stress Reduction: Use techniques like breathwork and meditation to lower cortisol and reduce stress on the liver. Supplements: Targeted liver detox support with Milk Thistle, NAC, Glutathione, B vitamins, and herbs like dandelion and burdock root. Functional lab testing, including GI-MAP, DUTCH, and Organic Acids Test, helps uncover root causes of liver congestion and cognitive dysfunction. These insights allow for personalized health protocols to optimize liver-brain-gut function and improve overall health. Key Takeaways – FDN Practitioner Approach to Liver Health: Investigate root causes using functional labs (GI MAP, DUTCH, OAT, CMP, Lipid Panel). Correlate lab markers with symptoms (fatigue, skin issues, hormone imbalances, digestion). Apply D.R.E.S.S. principles to restore detoxification pathways. Monitor progress and adjust protocols for personalized liver support. Tune in to learn how functional medicine and holistic strategies can improve brain clarity, mood, and overall health. AmiSights: Financing the Future For Small Business Owners and Entrepreneurs
In this week's edition of the AmiSights Podcast, we talk to Dr. Sherry Walling, founder and clinical psychologist at ZenFounder, which helps entrepreneurs thrive in business and in life by avoiding burnout and isolation. Dr. Sherry Walling discusses the mental health challenges of entrepreneurs, focusing on the importance of self-awareness, building a supportive team, and maintaining friendships outside of work.“I think it's really important for entrepreneurs to recognize their spouse as their first investor, the first person who said yes to their harebrained idea… The presence of a business is a little bit like the presence of a mistress, right? It's this ever present other thing that is absorbing the attention.”We explore why building a healthy company should not revolve around one person, but instead be systematized in a way that allows it to grow, thrive, and exist independently of the founder. We also discuss the importance of entrepreneurs being well-rounded, with interests and relationships outside of their business, and why securing full buy-in from a significant other is essential before starting an entrepreneurial journey.Connect with Dr. Sherry Walling: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/Check out ZenFounder: https://zenfounder.com/Recorded on 3/13/2025
It's not uncommon for successful high school students to get to college and find themselves hit with the reality that their former education wasn't nearly sufficient enough to help them feel confident and equipped for the rigorous academics that lay in front of them. For others, this process of pursuing a degree can be infinitely more daunting with any undiagnosed mental health conditions, as was the case for today's Success is Subjective guest, Dr. Bianca Busch. While Dr. Bianca is now an esteemed psychiatrist with many accomplishments under her belt - career, personal, and academic - she fought hard… harder than many to get to where she is now. After years of struggling through college, knowing she wanted to go to medical school but having a very difficult time with the sciences, Dr. Bianca was encouraged by a boss and mentor to get testing done. The test results helped Dr. Bianca understand herself better and gave her a confidence boost that encouraged her to continue her education. With a new understanding of how her brain works, a huge perspective shifted for her: she realized she wasn't stupid, as she once felt, but rather, she needed a different approach to her studies. Now as the founder of The College Psychiatrist, and author of Test Anxiety No More, Dr. Bianca Busch brings the desperately needed morale boost to college students and their families. “We need to leverage the sea of Goodwill in the community to do more than just say ‘Thank you for your service.' Mentor, hire, help with the transition from active duty to civilian life.” - Dr. Joe GeraciI met Dr. Joseph Geraci on the advisory committee through "Face the Fight" a consortium/initiative; with the goal of reducing Veterans' suicide by 50% in 5 years. We review the crucial support mechanisms for veterans during their vulnerable transition period into civilian life, especially focusing on preventing suicide. It's alarming to see the immense challenges young veterans face, carrying double the risk of suicide compared to their peers. Joe shared some brilliant insights, particularly through the "Onward Ops" initiative, a partnership with Google that empowers us all to become certified sponsors and support our veterans more effectively. If you're moved by this cause, I strongly encourage you to visit onwardops.org—every small step truly counts. One of the most compelling takeaways from our conversation was Joe's emphasis on the need for empathy and understanding from mental health professionals and every individual in the community. His experience, bridging military service and psychology, is a powerful testament to how leadership and support can transform lives. Joe spoke about the strategic use of predictive analytics to identify at-risk veterans and the necessity of firearm safety in suicide prevention efforts. It's not just about evidence-based treatments; it's about creating a safe, compassionate space where veterans feel valued and understood. So, let's rise to the challenge together, acknowledge these brave men and women with more than just words, and take real, heartfelt actions to support their journey. Are you tired of trying (or thinking you should be trying) all the quick fixes and biohacks from the health gurus? Jenn is here to share the ultimate biohack when it comes to optimal health…tune in to hear what it is!In this episode, Jenn is talking about the ultimate biohack, sleep! Sleep is fundamental to our health and wellbeing, and yet most people struggle to get enough of it. Jenn is here to change that. She starts the episode off with explaining what a biohack is, and what common ones are on social media these days. She talks about the different levels of insomnia and why it has become a social norm to deprive ourselves of sleep. Jenn then dives into what the four stages of sleep are, why they are important, and how to ensure that you are setting yourself up for the best sleep possible. Tune in to this episode to learn what small steps you can implement into your routine to see big rewards! The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: ● [5:31] What is a biohack? ● [14:46] Why many biohacks can be misleading. ● [15:32] What is the ultimate biohack?● [17:21] What is insomnia? ● [20:08] Why do we deprive ourselves of sleep?● [25:00] How can you set up your day to support quality sleep?● [30:26] What are the four stages of the sleep cycle?● [32:58] What are the biggest things that impact the quality of our sleep?● [36:06] What is your own best sleep cocktail?● [43:58] Jenn's final thoughts on sleep. KEY TAKEAWAYS: ● [15:57] If you remedy your sleep, you can reduce many health symptoms and challenges.● [28:44] The biggest impacts on your health come from doing the little things consistently, and then adding a new little thing once the first has become a habit, rather than doing a dramatic thing that happens occasionally. ● [43:59] Health happens when we sleep, and our biohacks are a lot of wasted effort if you don't have the fundamentals in place first.QUOTES: [9:00] “When we see it as the magic bullet, I think the implementation of that is that people say, that's the only thing I need to do. I can do the one thing and then nothing else matters, this is the thing that's going to undo all the others, and that's not exactly the case.” - Jenn Trepeck [14:20] “You can't supplement your way out of poor nutrition. It's fighting an uphill battle all the time. You take one step forward, two steps back over and over, every time you hyperfocus on these other things, instead of focusing on the consistency of the fundamentals.” - Jenn Trepeck [19:53] “All of these things connect to what happens when we sleep, if we aren't getting that repair, it stands to reason we're going to have a whole host of malfunctions.” - Jenn Trepeck [30:48] “This is where the body's biology is so smart and it does it on its own, and sometimes our best bet is to get out of the way. Let it do its thing and get out of the way.” - Jenn Trepeck [43:59] “Health happens with sleep, and our biohacks are a lot of wasted effort if we do not have the fundamentals in place. Your biohacks are a thimble of water on your house fire, and when we're tempted to go toward the shiny object and the biohack from the guru, pause and recognize that what we really need is consistency in the fundamentals and probably a little bit more sleep and we're all going to be just fine.” - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Sleep On ItCirca Your Circadian RhythmBecome A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries Instagram

Welcome to another episode of the Silver Edge Fitness podcast! In today's Coaches Corner episode, I shared my tips for setting impactful and achievable health-related New Year's resolutions. I started out by reflecting on my own past failed resolutions, admitting I've made some pretty audacious ones over the years that were destined to fail. I know many can relate to starting off the new year highly motivated to finally get in shape or eat healthier, only to fall back into old habits by February. I then dove into reasons why resolutions often fail - they're too ambitious, we're not mentally ready to change, we don't understand our underlying motivations, we lack a solid plan and accountability system. I also discussed some deeper psychological barriers from making positive change, like believing we're undeserving or fearing failure. Next, I explained the SMART goal framework to set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound goals. I encouraged listeners to make resolutions focused on smaller, incremental changes over a shorter timeframe rather than huge, intimidating year-long goals. When it comes to nutrition resolutions targeting weight or fat loss, I urged rethinking the fixation on hitting a certain number on the scale. Instead, I advised focusing on metrics like body fat percentage or lean muscle gain. I suggested resolutions around increasing protein intake, entering a "metabolic restoration" phase before starting a diet, and establishing healthier eating habits like mindful eating, meal prepping, staying hydrated, and not snacking after dinner. On the exercise front, I recommended a simple regimen of full-body strength training 3 days a week and starting with a daily step goal based on your current baseline activity. I emphasized keeping things sustainable rather than intense cardio blasts or bootcamp workouts. I wrapped up the show by stressing mindset and motivation as key to long-term success. While motivation helps kick things off, it fades quickly. By focusing on becoming the type of person who relishes healthy behaviors and listening to your "why", you're much more likely to stick with resolutions. I also encouraged being compassionate with ourselves - progress isn't linear and setbacks will happen. The most important thing is getting back on track. I'm excited for you to put these tips into action in the new year! Be sure to check out the resources below for guides to help with your fitness journey. This is one of my favorite episodes. I walk you through an exercise I do with 99% of my clients that maps out success into easy action steps for good times and bad. If you enjoy the episode, I do not advertise - PLEASE LEAVE A RATING OR REVIEW ❤️Instagram: @hmaewalshPARTIAL TRANSCRIPT:Hello beautiful people and welcome back to the show today. I am going to hand you the keys to success And that is a promise i'm going to deliver on I really am going to hand you the key to your own success in your health and wellness journey so success, what is success? In your everyday routine when you're at home and you can go play. grocery shopping and all of those other things is not going to look the same as what success looks like on vacation, where you can't weigh or measure your food.If you're tracking macros or you may not have control over every single meal, what does success look like in that circumstance? The first failure that always seems to stop people is defining success as one thing. And it's success is completely circumstantial because we're circumstantial as humans, right? With our resources we have available at the time we have available with whatever. So the first thing I want you to do is take a second and think about What is success at home look like? Does that mean that you had protein at every meal? Does it mean you drank water? Does it mean you went for your walk that day?Does it mean you got your workout in? What is the list of things that when you finish the day, if you did those things, you're like, that was a great day. That was a very successful day in the pursuit of my best self. Figure those things out. Once you have that list, that is going to be your framework. So, say you're going on vacation, right? What we're going to do is we're going to take our original list and you're going to circle things that you absolutely can get done without ruining your experience. For example, drinking enough water. That isn't going to inhibit your vacation, you're not going to miss out on anything, that's a non negotiable.Circle it. Go through the list, find every non negotiable that you can reasonably stick to in any circumstance. So, craziest of the crazy, you can drink enough water, circle it. Cool. Now we have our absolute non negotiable list. You're going to put this in a note in your phone. You're going to put this in a note on your desk, on your mirror, wherever you will see it, and you will add to it.This is the start of your success list, which we're going to get into in a little bit. These things are your new bare minimum. These are the things that you have to do every single day because it's simply what you do. There's no more questioning it, there's no more decisions. How I want you to get this done is I want you to stack it on top of things that are already non negotiable in your life that you might not think about, right? This is a principle from James Clear in Atomic Habits. You're gonna have it stacked, so you brush your teeth every single day. If you don't drink enough water, right, sticking to the same example, and you put a glass of water next to your toothbrush so you drink it every time you brush your teeth, You now have a habit. It's simple. It's easy. It's not hard to implement because it's stacked on top of something else. I want you to stack all your non negotiables. Figure out the easiest way to get those things done in a way that you will be reminded and it will be obvious if you're choosing not to do it. If you have to reach past the glass of water to your toothbrush without drinking the water, you know you didn't drink the water.

Change is hard, but it doesn't have to be impossible. Learn the secrets to making change happen in this podcast episode. Discover the five ways to guarantee success, including self-discipline, consistency, and pleasure. Find out how to think abundantly and live confidently to achieve your goals to guarantee health success. Change is hard. Even good change can feel impossible. But on some level, don't we all want to change? The question is how? How do you do the things you know you should? Spoiler alert: Willpower or good intentions won't create change. They're needed but not essential. The essentials to change, and the only way you'll do it, is by making change safe and pleasurable. The two metrics we often disregard for a metric of change that looks like deprivation, starvation, and restriction. The path of change I thought was required to make it happen. I had spent the better part of six years beating my body into submission while believing subconsciously that my self-hate would force me to be healthy. In reality, hate and health do not go together because hate and change conflict. They work against each other, leaving you running for your old patterns, the ones you desperately want to change. But that doesn't make change impossible. It just makes the way we've been trying to change impossible. Inside this podcast, I share the secrets of change that guarantee success. Plus, I challenge you to engage with something hard. Because your body craves hard things. It was made for hard things. But only when you balance that with pleasure and desire. Learn the secrets inside. Learn more: https://thelivingwell.com/301
