Innovation in education is critical to our society, says One Digital Consulting Founder and CEO Carlos J. Ochoa. And virtual- and augmented-reality applications are central to his vision for the future. Carlos and his team have already created a number of free digital resources, to empower educators. Carlos, who is both the President of the VR/AR Association's Madrid Chapter and Global Co-Chair of the VRARA Education Commitee, says virtual reality and cultural heritage are his passions. His recent work combines both. One Digital Consulting's YouTube channel includes tours of Russian museums (in 360 video, of course!), and a full playlist of "VR in Cultural Heritage". And a don't-miss project is "Magical and Mystery Tour Around Cultural Heritage", which Carlos and his team created for the ILRN 2020 digital conference. This is a VR recreation of the historical city of Cuenca, in the Iberian Peninsula. Carlos says the project involved recreating the city as it had been, prior to its destruction in the 14th century, and including a timeline which showcased the innovations of Muslim culture. Carlos talked about his background and his own introduction to immersive technology, shared the story of One Digital Consulting and offered resources for fellow educators. On this edition of Over Coffee® you will hear: How Carlos first became interested in VR; The story of One Digital Consulting and their VR/AR platform, Smart Education Labs; A closer look at the ways Smart Education Labs created "smart" education content and a new educational approach; The obstacles Carlos sees, to effective XR education worldwide; What needs to happen, to address the problems of digital divide, post-COVID 19; Five major objectives for creating effective immersive-learning environments worldwide; One of Carlos' favorite experiences with creating educational content through virtual reality; And, how to access and interact with his work! A favorite free (and easy) resource, for creating a 3D environment for education.
Welcome back to another Soul Driven Podcast interview - oh wait, this isn't an interview, haha! After a guest canceled last minute, I decided to do something that I haven't before - host a personal discussion. And who better than with my partner? And what is more relevant than the Pandemic? Like every couple, it's been a bumpy ride, but because of the unique way we manage our relationship, this isn't your usual discussion. This week, you'll meet my partner of four years, Carlos Fonseca-Rodriguez as we share our personal takes on the good, bad, and ugly of what we've been experiencing since lockdown went into effect. We'll talk about what elements in our relationship made it easier and harder, and we don't hold back. This is an honest (and fun) discussion from two people who are doing the work and it's sure to make an impact. Single? Well, when I was single, these were the types of discussions I wanted to hear so that I could execute them at some point in the future. There's something here for everyone. SHOW NOTES In this episode, we discuss: How Carlos and Ahna navigate the pandemic as a couple Which elements of their relationship made the lockdown easier and harder What they learned about each other during the pandemic Relationship success and failure during the pandemic Changes they would make if a lockdown happens again Their thoughts about couple's therapy Once you've listened, I'm curious, did you enjoy this show? Getting reviews for your products is essential for your sales success, but other than hitting up friends and family members to do your reviews, what other ways can you obtain them. There are actually several, but one of my favorites is using Foursquare. What is Foursquare? It’s essentially another form of Yelp! but better. With Foursquare you can search for reviews on certain products in any number of locations. You can then scope out the profile of the reviewer to see how many they’ve left on Foursquare and what their ranking is. You can also access that person’s social media profiles and see what types of products they like reviewing. The possibilities for finding fantastic reviewers are truly endless. Plus, these people are reviewing off of Amazon, so their Amazon reviewer ranking will be higher. There are some pitfalls that you need to avoid if you plan to use Foursquare in your long term business strategy. Listen in as I share the way I use Foursquare and what you should NOT do while using the platform. In This Episode: [00:27] Carlos is sharing his method of using Foursquare for Amazon reviews. [01:51] Why the quality of your reviews is more important than the quantity. [03:52] How to navigate Foursquare city guide. [06:14] Unlike Yelp! you can get additional information about the users on Foursquare. [08:11] Why Foursquare is different from Yelp! In today’s special bonus episode, we’re talking with the co-founders of Decriminalize Nature, Carlos Plazola and Larry Norris. Their mission is to promote human health and wellbeing by decriminalizing and expanding access to entheogenic plants and fungi. By utilizing political and community organizing, education, and advocacy, they are closer than ever to their goal. Carlos and Larry discuss how their organization began as an effort to help people reconnect with nature by way of using plants for their healing properties. This naturally led to them advocating for the removal of plants from their Schedule 1 status so that people can once again rediscover and utilize them as medicine. For anyone who is interested in organizing change in their community, Carlos and Larry share their advice on how to get started. It begins by gathering a small group of like-minded community members and developing a resolution. From there, it can be shared with a broader coalition of people from various parts of the community. Once it has gained wider support, it can be brought before the local government. As this movement increasingly spreads around the country, more and more organizations and individuals are getting involved. We talk about recent changes in attitudes that have taken place to make this possible and how this might lead to further developments in the near future. In this episode: The grassroots mission of Decriminalize Nature and how it has spread all over the country How Carlos and Larry became involved in advocating for decriminalization efforts Practical advice on how to organize for decriminalization at the community level What decriminalization means on the local and federal levels How the decriminalization movement has spread to cities around the United States Lessons learned from the decriminalization of cannabis How the decriminalization movement has become more diverse than ever Quotes: “This is a moment when we can stand up and say that these are important for us to be able to work with, on a personal level, a spiritual level, and healing level. And now the science is showing that.” [3:51] “This is not a fear-based movement. This is a movement about liberation, equitable access, and remembering our connection to nature.” [12:17] “The more news that comes out, the more people see that it’s possible. The more people see the support, then everyone gets excited to jump on it. It feels safe.” [26:25] “This is a non-political issue. Carlos Hidalgo is an entrepreneur, past TedX speaker and author. In his latest book, The UnAmerican Dream, Carlos rejects the popular "hustle porn" culture we live in today. He argues that recalibrating your priorities will in fact make you more awesome at your job, as well as other areas in your life. The idea for the UnAmerican Dream came to Carlos in 2016, around the same time he decided to leave the first company that he co-founded. Since that time, he has spoken with too many people just like him that have invested far too much building a career and chasing professional ambitions, only to see their lives fall apart and be left wondering what it was all for. The UnAmerican Dream is for those in business, entrepreneurs, and anyone who simply wants permission to step off the treadmill and explore another way of business that is not all about the “hustle”...which actually isn’t the American Dream at all. In this episode we dive into: The personal crisis that served as the wake-up call for Carlos to shift his focus from business first to life and relationships. The important distinction we need to make between working hard and “hustling”, and why hustling actually stems from a state of fear. Why work-life balance doesn’t exist and why we should instead shift our focus to establishing work-life boundaries. How we should structure our days in a way where we can do maximum work in a minimal time. How to define our values and live them at work and how getting feedback from others can be a powerful tool in defining what’s actually most important to you. Why as a provider, it’s actually selfish for us to decide what others want, which is what far too many of us do when justifying the amount of work we do. Surrounding yourself with accountability and why having this is actually a sign of strength rather than a weakness. Why we should shift our focus from the outcome to the journey and the importance of disconnecting our self worth from our achievements. The important distinction between success and fulfillment. How Carlos utilizes scheduled therapy time and why it’s a non negotiable that helps him to mentally stay on track. Part of Denver’s own CinemaQ Film Festival this past July that highlighted local and national gay artists, the short pays tribute to the victims of the Pulse Nightclub shooting, reminding us to “allow ourselves some joy and respect our truth, whatever that may be.” Born in Puerto Rico, Carlos was exposed to music and the arts from a young age. Film direction satisfies his “desperate need to express” himself, and allows for experimentation via the medium itself. He recently moved to Denver from Florida, and is inspired by the energy and creativity of the city. Rachel has a degree in opera and musical theatre training from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City, but she returned to her home state of Colorado to perform in local professional theatre. Carlos and Rachel met through the Denver theatre community, and today they share the process of collaborating on I Stand Still, discussing the organic nature of the project, what it was like to film in Denver, and the connections between the Pulse shooting and the film.
