With valuable experience across multinational companies and as the host of the International Trade Resources podcast, Kim brings a wealth of knowledge to the conversation. They dive deep into the ongoing challenges of supply chain disruptions, focusing on tariffs and the hurdles businesses face in this volatile environment.Introducing Kim KirkendallConnect with KimKim Kirkendall is a distinguished consultant and advisor on international trade, supply chain, and operations, primarily for multinational corporations. With her roots in China, Kim's career journey boasts managing factories and supply chains across Asia Pacific, culminating in the establishment of her consulting firm over two decades ago. Her expertise extends to advising international companies, particularly from New Zealand and Australia, in navigating trade and manufacturing challenges.Unpacking the Impact of Tariffs on Supply ChainsArt and Kim delve into current supply chain disruptions, particularly scrutinizing the role tariffs play in today's economic climate. With 2025 witnessing heightened uncertainty, Kim emphasizes the importance of strategic planning over reactionary measures. Recent trade wars and tariff policies have introduced significant volatility, making it imperative for businesses to plan but avoid rash decisions based on fleeting news.Strategic Responses to Tariff ChallengesKim provides practical insights into how companies can strategically maneuver around these obstacles. Key strategies include reengineering products, optimizing packaging, and considering alternative shipping methods to minimize costs. Though challenging, mitigating tariff impacts often involves innovative solutions like first sale principles and careful consideration of country of origin regulations. The Role of Supplier RelationshipsA significant thread through the discussion is the need for strong supplier relationships and transparency. Kim warns against pushing cost-cutting measures onto suppliers without open communication, as this can precipitate quality issues down the line. She advocates for collaborative approaches that ensure supplier stability and uphold quality standards amidst tariff-induced pressures.Decision Fatigue and Mitigation MeasuresOver recent months, the business community has faced 'decision fatigue' with constant tariff changes. Kim underscores the importance of fatigue management, urging companies to focus on strategic decision-making rather than immediate reactions. She highlights the essential practice of scenario planning, offering businesses the ability to swiftly adapt to changes while mitigating risks efficiently. Conclusion: Navigating the Storm with ResilienceAs the conversation wraps up, Kim emphasizes that while predicting future tariff trends is nearly impossible, businesses must remain resilient and prepared for any scenario. Short-term mitigation strategies, coupled with comprehensive scenario planning, can significantly alleviate the stress of tariff uncertainties and provide a balanced approach to business continuity.Timestamps00:00 Introduction and Guest Introduction00:59 Kim Kirkendall's Background and Experience03:09 Current Supply Chain Disruptions06:34 Tariff Impacts and Company Strategies16:24 Mitigation Strategies and Practical Advice31:45 Long-term Planning and Scenario Analysis36:26 Conclusion and Contact Information ProducerJacob ThomasFollow UsLinkedInApple Podcasts

Previously Miyoko was Tiffany's Vice-President Global Sales, International Operations, Vice-President Japan Division, Director - International Japan, Account Associate, Coordinator Ala Moana Store, Coordinator/Manager Global Trade Business.   Summary: Key Points on Leading in Japan Miyoko Demey, former President of Tiffany Japan, shares valuable insights on leadership in Japan based on her thirty-year career with Tiffany, spanning the U.S. and Japan. Her experiences underscore the importance of curiosity, respect, communication, and adaptability when leading in a complex cultural environment. 1. The Importance of Curiosity and Respect Miyoko highlights curiosity as a critical leadership trait. She emphasizes the need to listen actively, ask questions, and understand different perspectives, particularly when leading multicultural teams. Leaders cannot assume “standard” solutions apply. Respect for people, their work, and the local culture is key to building trust and creating an inclusive environment. 2. Building Trust Trust is foundational for leadership in Japan. Miyoko explains that consistency is essential—leaders must follow through on promises and remain transparent. When mistakes occur, leaders should focus on learning and growth rather than blame. This approach helps employees feel safe to take risks, make decisions, and innovate. 3. Overcoming Siloed Thinking with a “One Team” Approach Japanese organizations often exhibit a siloed mindset, where roles are narrowly defined, and collaboration can be limited. Miyoko tackled this by promoting a “one team, one goal” culture. She encouraged employees to see the bigger picture and understand their contributions to the collective success of the organization. 4. Leadership Challenges for Japanese Women Miyoko acknowledges unique challenges faced by Japanese women in leadership roles, such as self-doubt and societal expectations. She advocates for mentorship programs and encourages women not to underestimate their potential. Sharing her own challenges and imperfections helped her team feel more confident about stepping up and taking risks. 5. Communication is Repetition and Adaptation Effective communication in Japan requires consistent messaging, delivered in various formats, from town halls to one-on-one meetings. Miyoko points out that Japanese audiences often rely on subtle, unstated cues (ishin denshin), but assumptions can no longer be taken for granted. Leaders must clarify their expectations explicitly to avoid misunderstandings. 6. Understanding the Headquarter-Local Dynamics Miyoko's deep knowledge of Tiffany's headquarters gave her credibility as a leader in Japan. She acted as an effective “culture interpreter,” bridging the gap between the U.S. head office and local operations. Her ability to explain local needs to headquarters—and vice versa—helped smooth operations and build trust with both sides. 7. Resilience Through Opportunity Miyoko views challenges as opportunities for growth. For instance, during COVID-19, her ability to adapt to unexpected circumstances allowed her to manage Tiffany Japan effectively while maintaining work-life balance. This mindset of resilience and positivity is essential for leaders navigating crises. 8. Key Professional Traits: The Four C's Miyoko identifies her “Four C's” for leadership: Curiosity: Always strive to learn and understand. Confidence: Built through hard work and preparation. Courage: Make decisions, take risks, and own the outcomes. Compassion/Connection: Build genuine relationships by listening and understanding others. Miyoko's leadership approach demonstrates the power of balancing respect for Japanese cultural nuances with global business priorities. For foreign leaders in Japan, she advises listening, respecting existing structures, and acting decisively while maintaining trust and communication.

With her opinions, actions, and even her sense of style, McKinney has inspired both admiration and controversy. McKinney´s political career began unofficially in 1986 when her father, Georgia State Representative Billy McKinney, put her name on the ballot as a write-in. Cynthia McKinney was living in Jamaica at the time and did not take the matter seriously; still, she garnered a large percentage of votes without even trying. Two years later, McKinney ran for and won the seat, creating the first father/daughter combination to serve together in the Georgia State House of Representatives. Cynthia immediately began making her own mark, defying House dress codes for women by wearing trousers instead of dresses. She spoke out against the first Persian Gulf War, and despite being in the House with her father, she often disagreed and voted against him. In 1992, McKinney won a seat in the US House of Representatives in Georgia´s newly created 11th district. She was the first African-American woman to represent Georgia in the US Congress. McKinney became Secretary of her Democratic freshman class and was placed on both the Agricultural Committee and the International Relations Committee. Her gold tennis shoes and braided hairstyle became her trademarks, and effectively raised her profile on a House floor dominated by white men. Though a Democrat during President Clinton's tenure, McKinney voted against NAFTA, showing that she was not one to simply follow the Party line. McKinney worked hard in Washington to clean up pollution in her district and improve its rural roads. During her second term, McKinney earned distinctive committee assignments with the National Security Committee and the International Relations Committee's International Operations and Human Rights Subcommittee. A supporter of a Palestinian State in Israel-occupied territory, she sparked controversy by criticizing American policy in the Middle East. After the 9/11 attacks, McKinney suggested the President might have had prior knowledge of 9/11. The criticism she received from this highly controversial idea probably contributed to her defeat in the 2002 election; however, she ran for the seat again and was re-elected in 2004. Between terms in office, McKinney traveled the country and Europe,

Our guest this week is Jane Ewing, SVP, Sustainability at Walmart* recorded live at last month's NRF "Big Show." In a wide-ranging interview we discuss how Walmart is putting people and planet at the heart of all of its decisions. We explore Walmart's sustainability journey and go into details on their key initiatives, the challenges they need to overcome, and how to get everyone on the same mission despite the complexity of different functions and a vast global footprint. Then it's on to the news of the week, staring with some big news from our guest's employer, including Walmart's plans to increase store manager compensation, a 3 for 1 stock split, and major investments in new store openings and remodels. We also delve into the state of the retail layoffs and do a quick recap of earnings news from Amazon (wow!), Peloton (oof!), Apple (not bad) and LVMH (quite nice), and share some numbers on emerging deflation.* Since our recording Jane was named the new SVP, International Operations at Walmart.Presented by Celonis.Past episodes mentioned.Michelle PooleJudith McKennaSteve's new book--Leaders Leap: Transforming Your Company at the Speed of Disruption--will be released April 23rd (note new release date). Paul Hutchinson is an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and influential speaker recognized for his dedication to child welfare and humanitarian efforts. He founded the Child Liberation Foundation, leading over 70 undercover rescue missions across 15 countries, resulting in the liberation of thousands of children. The lesson of dancing instead of fighting, learned from playing rugby, has valuable applications in various aspects of life. Whether in sales, personal relationships, or raising children, approaching conflicts with empathy and understanding can lead to more positive outcomes. By finding common ground and gradually redirecting the focus, it becomes possible to achieve goals without engaging in direct confrontation. Paul Hutchinson also emphasizes the importance of honing a boy's energy into something positive. He shares a story of his sons play-wrestling on the kitchen floor while he and his wife have a conversation nearby. Despite the chaotic scene, Paul and his wife embrace the energy and find it amusing. This demonstrates their ability to see the positive side of their sons' boisterous behavior and appreciate it for what it is. Another important aspect of raising boys with a positive influence is teaching them values and instilling a sense of responsibility. Paul mentions the saying, "You can raise dangerously good men, but if you don't do it right, you can raise dangerous men." This highlights the importance of guiding boys towards making good choices and understanding the consequences of their actions. By providing a supportive and nurturing environment, parents can help boys develop into well-rounded individuals who contribute positively to society. www.thedadedge.com/460 www.paulhutchinsonofficial.com

Almost everything about how marketing is done today, including the very notion of a brand itself, will require a complete re-imagination. Raja shares the forward-thinking ways all businesses must rethink their entire marketing landscape to remain relevant and be successful.    WHAT  I  LOVE  MOST… Raja's assertion that trust will be one of the biggest differentiators between brands, and that the key to trust will be to demonstrate your purpose and belief in it, and then boldly and consistently act with purpose to earn that trust!    Running time: 33:47      Subscribe on iTunes   Find Tiffani on Social:   Facebook   Twitter   LinkedIn   Instagram      Find Raja Online:   LinkedIn   Twitter  Instagram     Raja's Book: Quantum Marketing

One of life's great paradoxes is that when something is so core to everything that you do that you can't imagine being able to do your job without it, that's often when take it a little for granted. And I think that's what the insurance industry is guilty of when we think of loss adjusters and other trusted third party claims professionals. That's why I'm delighted I was able to have such an in-depth and probing conversation with Andrew Bart CEO of International Operations at Crawford and Company. It's clear after our meeting that while many in the sector will regard Crawford's services as a given and a constant, Crawford itself does anything but. This may be a market-leading business with a very strong position globally, but it is constantly challenging, reinventing and disrupting itself as the world develops. For instance, how does an adjuster scale up and scale down flexibly in the face of ever more frequent, severe and global loss events? And what about when these events occur simultaneously at different points in the world? How does an adjuster rise to the challenge of new developments like parametric insurance, the huge increase in intangible assets and social phenomena like the gig economy? And how about resurgent inflation and the mega-trend of ESG and the transition to net zero which is going to change fundamentally how insurers and their customers deal with all claims in the future? Well, the answers are all here. And they involve a huge amount of technology and data and an enormous amount of collaboration as well as a subtle shift in focus from hindsight and learning historical lessons to foresight, prediction, prevention and prescriptive actions. You may not have thought of all these things, but I can assure that Andrew has very deeply. The result is a fascinating podcast that will give you a clear idea of what the third part claims professionals of the future are going to look like. And I think that after this you won't take loss adjusters for granted ever again.
