By 35 years of age, Ashley Avinashi found herself suffering from chronic adrenal fatigue, high levels of anxiety and a sense of having lost herself in the world. The journey into parenthood had her question everything she had ever believed about life. She had spent nearly two decades post-graduation following her dreams, beginning with a corporate role in a fast track management program to becoming one of the top sales and investment experts in the busiest market in North America. Despite a seemingly perfect life on the outside, her inside world was crumbling. There came a time where she learned how separated she had become from her own intrinsic worth and intuition, working hard for the external and neglecting what truly mattered for her. The clarity emerged as she returned to her roots, and reconnected deeply to her true self. She began to act in ways that showed that she loved and honoured herself, and the joy followed. Patterns of anxiety, control and proving her worth were left behind. She has since founded an organization called Raising Humanity, which offers a revolutionary path by which we can raise ourselves and our children. The hope is that the magic, or light, is preserved in us from birth, and future generations would have an opportunity to not go some many of their lives unlived. When we are heard and seen as we are, we can move past the old patterns that keep us from experiencing life fully. Maggie Berghoff is a certified nurse practitioner from Vanderbilt University as well as trained in Functional Medicine from the Institute for Functional Medicine. At 22 years old, Maggie found herself carrying a sudden 50lbs of extra weight, felt bloated, was breaking out in the most horrible skin hives, had hair that was thinning out and was experiencing brain fog that was unbearable. She was also plagued by relentless feelings of fatigue that made it hard to get through the day despite a solid 10 hours of sleep. A few months later, Maggie found herself lying in a hospital bed after experiencing a mini-stroke. She was discharged with a list of diagnoses, medications, and a doom sentence of a rare disease, kidney failure, infertility, and IV therapy for the rest of her life. Fortunately, Maggie didn’t accept that she couldn’t be back to her normal self again. She turned to what’s known as Functional Medicine, a cutting-edge whole-systems medicine approach that addresses and treats the underlying root causes of chronic illness and symptoms, instead of just managing symptoms like the traditional medical model. In less than 6 months she was back to her normal self again, all lab values pristine, and feeling more healthy and happy than ever had before. Flash forward, Maggie now takes her extensive training in both the traditional and natural medical worlds and provides her clients with her easy to follow framework. Her clients report increased energy and vitality, weight loss, hormone balance, glowing and anti-aging skin, auto-immune disease reversal, and elimination of chronic pains and gastro-intestinal distress. Carlos Hidalgo is an entrepreneur, past TedX speaker and author. In his latest book, The UnAmerican Dream, Carlos rejects the popular "hustle porn" culture we live in today. He argues that recalibrating your priorities will in fact make you more awesome at your job, as well as other areas in your life. The idea for the UnAmerican Dream came to Carlos in 2016, around the same time he decided to leave the first company that he co-founded. Since that time, he has spoken with too many people just like him that have invested far too much building a career and chasing professional ambitions, only to see their lives fall apart and be left wondering what it was all for. The UnAmerican Dream is for those in business, entrepreneurs, and anyone who simply wants permission to step off the treadmill and explore another way of business that is not all about the “hustle”...which actually isn’t the American Dream at all. In this episode we dive into: The personal crisis that served as the wake-up call for Carlos to shift his focus from business first to life and relationships. The important distinction we need to make between working hard and “hustling”, and why hustling actually stems from a state of fear. Why work-life balance doesn’t exist and why we should instead shift our focus to establishing work-life boundaries. How we should structure our days in a way where we can do maximum work in a minimal time. How to define our values and live them at work and how getting feedback from others can be a powerful tool in defining what’s actually most important to you. Why as a provider, it’s actually selfish for us to decide what others want, which is what far too many of us do when justifying the amount of work we do. Surrounding yourself with accountability and why having this is actually a sign of strength rather than a weakness. Why we should shift our focus from the outcome to the journey and the importance of disconnecting our self worth from our achievements. The important distinction between success and fulfillment. How Carlos utilizes scheduled therapy time and why it’s a non negotiable that helps him to mentally stay on track.
