Primark introduced its first U.S. in-store repair workshops to promote sustainability and customer engagement, offering free sewing kits and mending tutorials. While the effort aligns with a broader push for circular fashion, Chris and Anne weigh its true value for low-cost fast fashion shoppers and whether it can scale meaningfully in the U.S. market in this clip from the Omni Talk Retail Fast Five Podcast, brought to you by the A&M Consumer and Retail Group, Simbe, Mirakl, Ocampo Capital, Infios, and ClearDemand.

When Adolescense arrived on Netflix last month, it was streamed nearly 25 million times in just four days and sparked a global conversation on the dark side of social media and the lives of teenage boys. But what is it really like to be a teenage boy in 2025? How much attention do they really pay to masculinity influencers? What kind of pressures do they face? And what do they wish adults would understand about them? To discuss all this and more, Róisín Ingle is joined by three teenagers, Dylan O'Malley, Chester Ryan and Daniella Tetteh. We also hear from Jamie Carrick, a facilitator with The Soar Foundation, which delivers wellbeing workshops for teenagers in schools around Ireland. But first, Irish Times reporter Niamh Towey is here to discuss some of the biggest stories of the week, including the arrest of eight protestors from the Mothers Against Genocide group outside Leinster House, why the head of Primark resigned this week after making “an error of judgement” and why one reader of the Irish Times is suffering from wedding and baby shower fatigue. In the latest episode of The Voice of Retail, host Michael LeBlanc sits down with Phil Wahba, Senior Writer at Fortune, to explore the ever-evolving landscape of retail leadership, consumer behavior, and strategic transformations. Wahba reflects on more than a decade covering retail bankruptcies, leadership shifts, and innovation, highlighting that while consumer desires have remained relatively stable—good value, seamless experiences, and quality products—retailers often struggle to meet these expectations consistently.Wahba shares insights into how some of the biggest names in retail excel by focusing on core strengths. He points to Costco and Walmart as prime examples of companies that continue to thrive by relentlessly pursuing operational efficiency, value pricing, and consistent store execution. In contrast, many department stores have downsized or disappeared because, as Wahba puts it, they “chased the wrong rabbits”—pursuing short-term gains over long-term brand definition. Dillard's stands out by maintaining steady store counts and focusing on a solid merchandising strategy, proving that success hinges on knowing your customer and offering them a clear reason to shop. The conversation then shifts to Hudson's Bay and its recent struggles, which Wahba attributes to a lack of focus on fundamental retail principles and a greater emphasis on real estate extraction. He also touches on the broader implications of retail real estate vacancies, noting that large anchor-store spaces often require creative repurposing—whether converted into smaller retail footprints, medical clinics, or mixed-use developments.Looking ahead, Wahba anticipates a future where technology plays a more backstage role, with the spotlight on operational improvements such as inventory management, demand forecasting, and smoother omnichannel experiences. Shoppers do not seek flashy tech for its own sake; rather, they want frictionless pathways to purchase. The episode also explores how retailers like Foot Locker and Gap might engineer turnarounds under new leadership, taking cues from successful transformations at brands like Abercrombie & Fitch.Wahba underscores that retail “winners” will be those that evolve with shifting consumer expectations while staying true to foundational principles: consistently fair pricing, well-curated inventory, and reliable customer service. The conversation wraps up with a look at up-and-coming brands and international retailers—including Uniqlo—that could make bigger U.S. expansions in the coming years if they adapt carefully to the market's nuances.Whether you're watching for the next big turnaround or seeking to understand why some iconic names falter, this episode offers deep insights into the interplay of leadership, strategy, and consumer loyalty—critical elements shaping the future of modern retail. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Monzo – the bank that Steve and Steve have owned for what seems like ages – has been making noises about going public. But will it list in London, or in the US? A lot of UK companies have been listing in the States recently, but Steve D is hoping for a London IPO. Is this one for the AIM or the main market? J.D. Wetherspoon's has released its latest trading update and Steve W thinks it's… fine. Like-for-like sales growth is decent enough, but only really in line with the industry. The company has no realistic price competition from its rivals, but supermarkets are the big challenge. So how will the firm cope with higher tax and NI contributions? From the AIM, Steve D's investment in Ashtead Technology is starting to pay off. But nobody on our show is quite sure why. Revenues are set to come in marginally ahead of expectations, with EBITA (no D) up. Surely that's not enough to set the stock off, though… is it? We haven't talked about FTSE 250 dividend aristocrat Spectris on the show before – but that might have been a mistake. The stock has been bouncing back off its lows recently. It's in the precision measurement space and Steve D knows it from work. But Steve W has concerns over the impact of weak demand from China and its implications for profits. Prologis is still the biggest publicly-listed real estate investment trust (REIT) – we checked. It's heavily exposed to some promising trends that are emerging, but it's cheap right now. With a lower cost of capital than its rivals, the firm is well-positioned to make it through a period of normalising demand. So could it be one for either Steve to buy right now? Steve W has been looking at the latest results from Associated British Foods. It's underwhelming across the board, but especially when it comes to Primark. Despite this, the stock looks cheap right now. And it might be that the retailer's results – disappointing as they are – could justify the entire market cap by itself… We're always interested in Netflix on this show. And Steve D has been looking at a very impressive performance from the world's leading streaming platform. Revenue growth has been picking up and margins are widening, greeting great unit economics. And with its competitive position getting stronger, is it too late to buy the stock? Only on this week's PlayingFTSE Podcast! ► Support the show: Appreciate the show and want to offer your support?

Sex has become one of the most controversial topics in the history of the Church. But the historian Diarmaid MacCulloch shows in his book, Lower Than the Angels, that in the last 2,500 years Christianity has encompassed a much greater diversity of beliefs, including on homosexuality and the role of women. He argues that far from there being a single Christian theology of sex, there have always been a wide range of readings and attitudes. In one of the foundational stories of the Bible, in Genesis, Eve is created as an afterthought, from one of Adam's ribs, to be his companion. The classicist Helen King puts the female body at the centre of her book, Immaculate Forms, and examines the ways in which religion, and medicine, have played a gatekeeping role over women's bodies. The prize-winning poet, Ruth Padel, re-imagines the Christian story of the Virgin Mary – a girl in a Primark t-shirt facing a life shaped by divine will. Her new collection, Girl, unravels the myths and icons surrounding girlhood, and also paints a portrait of the Cretan ‘snake goddess' as she's unearthed and reshaped at the hands of a male archaeologist.Presenter: Amanda Vickery is Professor in Early Modern History at Queen Mary, University of LondonProducer: Katy Hickman

Welcome to your all-local daily news podcast serving Metro Detroit! We kick off with the heartwarming news of a baby gorilla born at the Detroit Zoo, the first in nearly 100 years. Bandia, a first-time mom, and her baby are doing well, although the Great Apes building is temporarily closed to guests to give them a calm and quiet space. Next, we discuss the upcoming opening of Primark's first Michigan store at Great Lakes Crossing Outlets in Auburn Hills. Set to open on September 12, the new location will offer over 36,000 square feet of retail space with the latest fashion trends, household essentials, and beauty supplies at affordable prices. Notably, Primark is known for paying fair wages, with sales associates starting at $15.25 an hour. Norris shares his experiences with Primark in Boston and London, comparing it to a larger, more affordable H&M. In downtown Detroit, the Cadillac Square development, previously known as the Monroe Blocks, is facing delay. Dan Gilbert's Bedrock is expected to request an extension to begin construction. The revised plan includes fewer residences and office space but adds a concert venue. Jer and Norris discuss the implications of these changes and the potential impact on the area. On the east side, Detroit is launching its first single-family waterfront home development in over 24 years at Shorepoint Village on Greyhaven Island. The project includes ten new homes with docks, high-end finishes, and 24-hour gated security, with prices starting at half a million dollars. The development aims to attract buyers from surrounding affluent areas. Don't miss this engaging discussion on the latest happenings in Detroit. Share your thoughts with us at dailydetroit@gmail.com.
