We've said that our best episodes are ones in which we disagree. This is one of those. Today we're looking at the ancient hymn "Be Thou My Vision," which asks God to be many things to the Christian. We make sure to include the oft-dropped "battle shield" verse. Colin emphasizes the necessity to include explicit reference to soteriological themes in music while Tyler investigates the variety offered by grammatical mood. Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart; Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art. Thou my best Thought, by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light. Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word; I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord; Thou my great Father, I Thy true son; Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one/ Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight; Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight; Thou my soul's Shelter, Thou my high Tow'r: Raise Thou me heav'nward, O Pow'r of my pow'r. Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise, Thou mine Inheritance, now and always: Thou and Thou only, first in my heart, High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art. High King of Heaven, my victory won, May I reach Heaven's joys, O bright Heav'n's Sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all. In his book, The Law and the Saint, Pink claims that our age is an age of lawlessness. As Pink worked in churches, homes, and communities, the contemporary evangelist witnessed an increasing disrespect for the Divine Law. Why has creation drifted so far away from the moral law which the Creator placed upon us? By expositing Scripture, Pink demonstrates the ways in which the moral law binds us as rational creatures and as Christians. Several passages in the New Testament reveal that this connection between creation to Creation is lasting--even today, God commands that we obey his law. Pink explores the relationship between modern Christians and the ancient rule of the Ten Commandments. Even though the Ten Commandments may sometimes seem inapplicable in today's fast-paced world, Pink reminds us that God's law is timeless. It is Pink's hope that one day all Christians will be able to say, "The Law of Thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver...O how love I Thy law! It is my meditation all the day." OPENING PRAYER: God,You are the Maker of all things and judge of all that you have made. From the dust of the earth you have formed us and from the dust of death you will raise us up. By the redemptive power of the cross, create in us clean hearts, and put within us a new spirit -- that we may repent of our sins and lead lives worthy of your calling; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.SilenceScripture"Even now," declares the LORD, "return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning."Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.Who knows? He may turn and have pity and leave behind a blessing— grain offerings and drink offerings for the LORD your God. Excerpts from Psalm 51Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place. You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.SilenceLet’s pray together. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have failed to do. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have to loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name, Amen.SilenceBe Thou My Vision Verse 1 Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art Thou my best thought, by day or by night Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light. 1 Jesus, I will ponder now On Thy holy passion; With Thy Spirit me endow For such meditation. Grant that I in love and faith May the image cherish Of Thy suffering, pain, and death That I may not perish. 2 Make me see Thy great distress, Anguish, and affliction, Bonds, and stripes, and wretchedness, And Thy crucifixion; Make me see how scourge and rod, Spear and nails, did wound Thee, How Thou diedst for man, O God, Who with thorns had crowned Thee. 3 Show me not alone Thy pain, Torment, and affliction; Let me see the cause and gain Of Thy crucifixion. Ah, my sin caused all the woe That Thou, Lord, hast suffered, Pard6ning grace dost Thou bestow, Gained when Thou wast offered. 4 Grant that I Thy passion view With repentant grieving, Nor Thee crucify anew By unholy living. How could I refuse to shun Every sinful pleasure, Since for me God's only Son Suffered without measure. 5 If my sins give me alarm And my conscience grieve me, Let Thy cross my fear disarm, Peace of conscience give me. Grant that I may trust in Thee And Thy holy passion; If His Son so loveth me, God must have compassion. 6 Grant that I may willingly Bear with Thee my crosses, Learning humbleness of Thee, Peace mid pain and losses. May I give Thee love for love; Hear me, O my Saviour, That I may in heaven above Sing Thy praise for ever.

The lyrics for Be Thou My Vision by Audrey Assad Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art Thou my best Thought, by day or by night Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord Thou my great Father, I Thy true son Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise Thou mine Inheritance, now and always Thou and Thou only, first in my heart High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art High King of Heaven, my victory won May I reach Heaven's joys, O bright Heav'n's Sun Heart of my own heart, whate'er befall Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all   What is it that's important about a Vision Statement for my business? Lindsay Teague Moreno, business owner and author, says that a vision statement is "by contrast to a mission statement, is a big picture what the company will become in the future."  Talking about a mission and vision statement "these two things will serve asthe basis for everything you say and do and put out into the world."   If we don't know what our vision is and what we're creating and how that will be portrayed to the world, we're going to be floating around and not really having a direction.   If you don't have a vision statement, my encouragement is that you create one.   Your vision statement should be consistent with your values, your passions, your strengths and your spiritual gifts. Clear, easy to remember and in every day language.   Google's vision statement is to "provide access to the world's information in one click."   You might be a visionary, you might not. I think I am sort of a visionary, but I get really intimidated when I sit down to write out a vision statement. You can ask "where does God want me in the future?" "how is my business pointing to the cross?" "where does God want my business in the future?"   Because, as christian business owners, we want to be representing Jesus as his ambassadors. We think about the verse like Eph 2:10 says, "For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."   The other cool things about creating a vision statement, we can point to Jesus. I've frequently said your business doesn't have to "look" Christian, it doesn't need to have Christian symbols on it, what it does need, is to be pointing to Jesus. It's about what our business looks like and what we do once we go out into the world.   I'm going to help you get super practical - I want you to use the next few minutes and download the worksheet to create your own vision statement. Dream about the direction that your business is going, what are the big dreams that God has placed on your heart?   Part of my vision is that I'm going to be speaking to thousands of women which is so scary! But I know that God's got this and he's put that vision on my heart.   I'd love for you to email me your vision statements so I can see what you've created. You can email me with those, questions or comments at dmr@daniellemroberts.com.   Download the worksheets here.

Our Scripture verse on preaching is 1 Corinthians 2:6-8 which reads: "Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory." Our quote on preaching today is from Colin S. Smith. He said, "Authentic gospel preaching always engages people with eternal issues." In this podcast, we are using as our texts, the following three books: "Lectures to My Students" by Charles H. Spurgeon; "The Preacher and his Preaching" by Alfred P. Gibbs; and "Biblical Preaching" by Haddon W. Robinson. And, I want to remind you to take advantage of our special offer. If you enjoy this podcast, please feel free to purchase any one of these books for your personal library from the resources page on our website -- ProclaimPodcast.com. Our first topic is titled "The Minister's Self-Watch, Part 8" from "Lectures to My Students" by Charles H. Spurgeon. He writes: [John Bunyan said,] "...Though there be a promise of shining as stars to those that turn many to righteousness, this is but on the supposition that they be first turned to it. Their own sincerity in the faith is the condition of their glory simply considered, though their great ministerial labors may be a condition of the promise of their greater glory. Many men have warned others that they come not to that place of torment, which yet they hasted to themselves; many a preacher is now in hell, that hath an hundred times called upon his hearers to use the utmost care and diligence to escape it...." Our second topic is titled "The Qualifications of the Preacher, Part 8" from "The Preacher and his Preaching" by Alfred P. Gibbs.  This section is titled: THE PREACHER MUST BE A STUDENT OF THE BIBLE (PART 1) A preacher must be a man of the Book. He must know it by reading it. It is essential that a preacher should be well acquainted with the book from which he preaches. In order to teach mathematics, one must know mathematics. What would you think of a "music teacher" who did not know music; or of an "English teacher" who did not know English? He, who is called to preach the Bible, is also called to study the Bible, for there cannot be one without the other; the first necessitates the last. Like David, each preacher should be able to testify, "Oh, how love I Thy law!" ... Our third topic is titled "The Definition of Expository Preaching, Part 6" from "Biblical Preaching" by Haddon W. Robinson. He writes: The Concept Is Applied to the Hearers (Part 1) Not only does the Holy Spirit apply his truth to the personality and experience of the preacher, but according to our definition of expository preaching, he then applies that truth through the preacher to the hearers. Expositors think in three areas. First, as exegetes we struggle with the meanings of the biblical writer. Then, as people of God we wrestle with how God wants to change us. Finally, as preachers we ponder what God wants to say to the congregation through us.  ...

Some of you who have been with Piano by Joel since the beginning will recall that I've previously recorded Be Thou My Vision, to the tune of the old Irish folk tune, Slane. But since I am always trying to improve the quality, musicality, and expressiveness of my work, I wanted to bring you something new. (Fresh?) This version features the solo piano, of course, giving the arrangement a contemporary feel; but I think you'll also find that the playing style, and the accompanying cello, lend a certain ancient quality to the piece. Here are the lyrics, translated into English by Eleanor Hull around the turn of the century:Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heartNaught be all else to me, save that Thou artThou my best Thought, by day or by nightWaking or sleeping, Thy presence my lightBe Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true WordI ever with Thee and Thou with me, LordThou my great Father, I Thy true sonThou in me dwelling, and I with Thee oneBe Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fightBe Thou my Dignity, Thou my DelightThou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high TowerRaise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my powerRiches I heed not, nor man’s empty praiseThou mine Inheritance, now and alwaysThou and Thou only, first in my heartHigh King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou artHigh King of Heaven, my victory wonMay I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s SunHeart of my own heart, whatever befallStill be my Vision, O Ruler of allUntil next time.Click Here to ListenPurchase a CD from CD BabyPurchase songs on iTunesFresh Piano WebsiteContact JoelLink to Piano by Joel For lots of free, original music, check out http://www.freshpiano.com.
