Listen along as Anthony continues our series through the book of Acts. Notes//Quotes: Acts 1:12-26 - Scott Reading Title: The Space Between “To clasp the hands in prayer is the beginning of an uprising against the disorder of the world.” - Karl Barth “One reason why the experiential reality of perceiving God is unfamiliar country today is that the pace and preoccupations of urbanized, mechanized, collectivized, secularized modern life are such that any sort of inner life... is very hard to maintain. To make prayer your life priority, as countless Christians of former days did outside as well as inside the monastery, is stupendously difficult in a world that runs you off your feet and will not let you slow down. And if you attempt it, you will certainly seem eccentric to your peers, for nowadays involvement in a stream of programmed activities is decidedly ‘in,' and the older ideal of a quiet, contemplative life is just as decidedly ‘out.' That there is widespread hunger today for more intimacy, warmth, and affection in our fellowship with God is clear... but the concept of Christian life as sanctified rush and bustle still dominates, and as a result the experiential side of Christian holiness remains very much a closed book.” - J.I. Packer “There are no more lots after the coming of the Holy Spirit. It's a shame isn't it? I mean life would be a lot easier if we just had to draw lots to know God's will, but evidently that's not how he wants it. The Spirit is who is in our hearts helps makes these things clear. One of my favorite prayers is, God will you make it so clear that there's no choice? I hate choice. Of the eighteen possible variations, just make seventeen go away will you, because I'm not real bright and I don't always get these things. I'm still hoping for casting lots to come back into use, but I'm not going to hold my breath.” - William Mounce “As much as modern Christians love to talk about successes, sometimes the failures of the church need airing.” - Holman Commentary {Verse 1} Free fall, feet off the ground A clean, white page, fresh snow, no sound Here as we wait, from dark to dawn New paths before us, the old is gone {Chorus 1} Unplug the lights, take down the tree The less we have, the less we need From Christmas night to New Year's Eve We bless the space that's in between We bless the space that's in between {Verse 2} December ends, make way for dreams Wait for the light to raise the spring Embrace it all from hope to doubt Like ocean waves washin' in and out {Chorus 2} Two roads apart, come close again Where do you stop? Where do I begin? Each year we learn more what it means We bless the space that's in between We bless the space that's in between {Bridge} We bless the seeds under the snow We bless the patience take it slow We bless the limits, bless the tears We bless the failures that brought us here {Verse 3} I wipe the frost the glass is cold Our dreams beneath the falling snow Be Thou my vision until I see And bless the space that's in between - Sandra McCracken & Josh Garrels O Almighty God, you pour out your spirit of grace and of supplication on all who desire it. Deliver us, when we draw near to you, from cold hearts and wandering minds, that with steady thoughts and kindled passion we may worship you in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. -adapted from the Book of Common Prayer
February 8, 2025Today's Reading: Introit for Epiphany 5 - Psalm 71:15-18; antiphon: Psalm 71:12Daily Lectionary: Job 5:1-27; John 2:13-25O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds. So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come. (Psalm 71:17-18)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. This psalm of David could have been composed around the time that his son, Absalom, sought to violently overthrow him. Other scholars think it could have come around Sheba's rebellion (see 2 Samuel 20). It's also possible that this Psalm reflects a man of faith who has been through it all, whose earthly life is coming to its conclusion in death (see 2 Samuel 23 for similar words spoken by David). But for us, I believe it is important to know that Psalm 71 teaches three key lessons. First, It calls us to have firm confidence in God and to remember our Lord's gracious mercy to us (see vs. 1, 3, 5-7). Second, it teaches us the right things to pray, such as: that we might never be ashamed of the Lord or His Word but might be rescued from the power of the wicked one even into our old age. And third, King David, by the Holy Spirit, teaches that we may daily have hopeful anticipation that our God will show us tenderness, and we not be forsaken; but it will be the enemies of the cross who will turn back in dishonor and shame. Ultimately, this song teaches us that God in Christ will not let us stagger at the promises of the Gospel through unbelief, but instead, He will fortify our faith like a faithful friend, even to the very end. How good it is to know that even as this was David's earthly experience, we see that this is all true through “great David's greater son,” the Lord Jesus Christ. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Be Thou our guard while troubles last And our eternal home! Under the shadow of thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure; Sufficient is Thine arm alone, And our defense is sure. (LSB 733:1,2)-Rev. January 17, 2025 Today's Reading: Introit for Epiphany 2 - Psalm 36:5-9; antiphon: Song of Solomon 2:4Daily Lectionary: Ezekiel 39:1-10, 17-29; Romans 7:21-8:17“His banner over me was love” (Song of Solomon, 2:4)In the Name of Jesus. Amen.Banners make statements. Schools have them, as do churches, whose banners may boast passages from Holy Scripture. Parades are never shy of banners with pithy messages communicating the beliefs of a group. Banners are meant to make a point and be seen by others. You don't hide them in a closet.“His banner over me was love.” The complete manifestation of God's love for the sinner is in Christ crucified and risen from the dead. For anyone looking for that “banner” of God's love, look to Jesus, and there you will find it. And it's more than a banner, for Jesus' blood does something. Christ atones for the sins of the entire world. His sacrificial death is divine love to purchase sinners from everlasting condemnation and make them children of God. Faith trusts in this promise, and by faith, one is saved because it's keeping faith that grabs Christ, and we live as He lives. This banner is a promise we shouldn't hide but confess it before others, praying by the grace of God that people will hear and believe.Another term in today's reading is the word “refuge,” which occurs often in the Bible. It's in the love of God manifested in Christ where we take refuge in the shadow of God's wings. This raises the question, “from what do we take refuge?” We face storms of all sorts that wreak havoc on our lives. Unexpected suffering can flood us with pain. Neighbors aren't always kind, and too often, their words and actions are like an archer's arrows penetrating the flesh. The devil accuses us in ways meant to distract us from God's love, accusing us of our sins to convince the soul we're unworthy of God's love and destined to Hell. Persecution for the faith also befalls saints throughout the world who still lose their lives for the sake of the Gospel they hold dear.Christ is our refuge, a very present help in every trouble. He is our banner, our seal from God of His undying love towards us. This love is steadfast and immovable, for not even Hell's gates overcome the Church. Far from being a love that allows sin is this love of God that covers it in Christ. Repentance and faith mean life with this Banner of love, Life in His Name that means ultimately eternal life with our Savior. In the Name of Jesus. Amen. “In suffering be Thy love my peace, In weakness be Thy love my pow'r; And when the storms of life shall cease, O Jesus, in that final hour, Be Thou my rod and staff and guide, And draw me safely to Thy Side!” (LSB 683)-Rev. March 29, 2024 Today's Reading: John 18:1-19:42, John 19:17-37Daily Lectionary: Exodus 12:29-32; 13:1-16; Lamentations 5:1-22, Hebrews 6:1-20, Psalm 22When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. The tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” (John 19:23-24a)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Have you ever thought about what happened to that seamless tunic? … One of those soldiers went home with it that day and wore it as his own. Ponder that for a moment: This sinner's nakedness is now covered by the literal clothes of Christ. … Sure that sounds strange, but isn't that exactly what Jesus does for the sinner? Isn't that the whole reason why Jesus came into our flesh: to take away our sin and guilt and shame and replace it with something else, something of His, something that would turn us from shameful sinners into righteous and shameless saints?Jesus' cross comes to you. It already has. It continually does. And that means the forgiveness of sins here in time and space. That means the righteousness of Jesus given for you right here and right now where you need it the most. On the cross we see a perfect God, who is perfect no longer. He is sin. He is your sin. He is a sinner. He is you. And so He wears the clothes of a sinner: shameful nakedness. He takes upon Himself your clothing, your sin, your guilt, your shame, your nakedness. And then He exchanges it with His own righteousness: a seamless tunic, not ripped apart, one whole piece from top to bottom, clothing your sinful shame, making you righteous and perfect. In a watery grave you put on the seamless tunic of Christ's righteousness, you put on Christ Himself. That is your baptism: the cross for you. And there God exchanged your clothes for His, there you put on the robe of righteousness, never to be taken off, never to be exchanged for another. On the cross Jesus declared, “It is finished!” Nothing more needed to be done. He put on your sin and hangs naked on the cross. And now in time and space, to last unto eternity, you wear His seamless robe of righteousness to cover your nakedness. It is the blessed exchange! It is Jesus for you! It is always Jesus for you. Even in the smallest of details. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Be Thou my consolation, My shield, when I must die; Remind me of Thy passion When my last hour draws nigh. Mine eyes shall then behold Thee, Upon Thy cross shall dwell, My heart by faith enfold Thee. Who dieth thus dies well. “Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art Thou my best thought, by day or by night Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light” Ezekiel 10-11
No início, minhas queixas me prejudicaram. A má qualidade do som e do vídeo tirou minha atenção. Mas daí ouvi um hino conhecido. Chorei enquanto cantava estas palavras: “Sejas tu minha visão, ó Senhor da minha vida. Tu és tudo para mim. Tu és meu melhor pensamento, de dia ou de noite. Acordando ou dormindo, Tua presença é minha luz” (Be Thou my vision). Richard is Back! Day two of our October surprise, and back to J.C. Ryle, and the mindset of saints of old is nothing not genuine about the ups and downs of the Christian struggle, and Ryle is in that mold. He told us yesterday: "Let me speak, lastly, to those who do pray. I trust that some who read this tract know well what prayer is and have the Spirit of adoption. To all such, I offer a few words of brotherly counsel and exhortation." "Brethren who pray, if I know anything of a Christian's heart, you are often sick of your own prayers. You never enter into the apostle's words, "When I would do good, evil is present with me," so thoroughly as you sometimes do upon your knees. You can understand David's words, I hate vain thoughts." You can sympathize with that poor converted Hottentot who was overheard praying, "Lord, deliver me from all my enemies, and above all, from that bad man myself." There are few children of God who do not often find the season of prayer a season of conflict." The conflict from within can make us weary of our own prayers. Day after day, we face ourselves in our weaknesses, selfishness, and sins as we come to our God. In the seasons of conflict, we are weary of ourselves and wonder if God feels the same. Rest assured, tired pilgrim, the one who delivers us from this body of death is Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. He tells us: If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself. No created thing shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. There is, therefore, now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. Above all, He says: Come to me all weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Beloved, I don't know about you, but I am weary every day and need to call to Him, Father, I need Thee, Father, Thou knowest all things, Thou knowest I love Thee. Be Thou to me my only comfort and fortress. "What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more." April 6, 2023Today's Reading: Matt 26:17-30Daily Lectionary: Ex 12:1-28, Lam 4:1-22, Heb 5:1-14, Psalm 31Matthew 26:26–28: “Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Communion is actually the true Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the bread and wine, instituted by Christ Himself for us Christians to eat and drink. Like...really. Jesus' blood. Same blood that flowed down from His hands and side on the cross. For you. Drink it. Seriously. We have to admit that's off putting. When the funny looking pastor in funny clothes holds it up and says "the peace of the Lord be with you always" he's showing you where peace comes from. It's not in the air. It's not in each other. It's in the bread that is His body. These words "Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins" show us that in this Sacrament forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given us through these words. If you eat Jesus' Body and drink His Blood your sins will be forgiven and you will have life and salvation. Not symbolically. The cardboard-tasting thing called bread and bottom shelf wine are the most precious gifts in all of creation. Eat and drink them and you'll have everything God has to give you. It's so hard to believe that the Holy Spirit has to do it for you. It still leads people to recoil. It's ridiculous. Invite someone to church, and see how quickly the Communion talk feels like more of a burden than a gift. But Communion is not an excuse. It's not a burden. It's not something we need to reason away or struggle to justify. It's an answer. A gift. A hope given for us to cling to in the darkest of days for the worst parts of us. This is for sinners. This is for you, full of jealousy, guilt, shame, rage, and sin. We don't get fixed by ignoring reality, cramming in a room for a meal and pretending everything is OK when it isn't. We're saved by the God who feeds us with His body and blood. We've said that our best episodes are ones in which we disagree. This is one of those. Today we're looking at the ancient hymn "Be Thou My Vision," which asks God to be many things to the Christian. We make sure to include the oft-dropped "battle shield" verse. Colin emphasizes the necessity to include explicit reference to soteriological themes in music while Tyler investigates the variety offered by grammatical mood. Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart; Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art. Thou my best Thought, by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light. Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word; I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord; Thou my great Father, I Thy true son; Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one/ Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight; Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight; Thou my soul's Shelter, Thou my high Tow'r: Raise Thou me heav'nward, O Pow'r of my pow'r. Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise, Thou mine Inheritance, now and always: Thou and Thou only, first in my heart, High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art. High King of Heaven, my victory won, May I reach Heaven's joys, O bright Heav'n's Sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all. The journey of the Hebrews from the edge of Egypt before the Red Sea all the way to Canaan land was marked by God's cloud. The LORD himself was in the cloud and it gave them protection and guidance. Exodus 13:21 The Lord was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night. The people soon showed a tendency to forget the Lord's protect and the great power of his deliverance at the Red Sea and they began their practice of grumbling against the Lord and against Moses. Nevertheless God mercy and grace was given to them in the provision of the cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night. God led them all the way in spite of their sin. God goes before you on your way, to seek out a place for you to encamp, in fire by night and cloud by day, to show you the way in which you should go. Deuteronomy 1:33. Even after the judgment of the first generation dying in the wilderness with the two exceptions of Joshua and Caleb God never withdrew his cloud or stopped the provision of daily manna. A hymn of the journey written in the 1700's captures this story and turns it into a prayer that we as God's redeemed people have sung. Today's Reading: Introit for the 13th Sunday after Trinity(Psalm 74:1-2, 19b, 21b; antiphon: v.20a, 21a, 22a, 23a)Daily Lectionary: 2 Kings 9:1-13; 10:18-29; Philippians 2:12-30 Do not forget the life of your poor forever. Let the poor and needy praise your name. (From the Introit for the 13th Sunday after Trinity) In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Psalm 74 is not full of cheerful thoughts, fluffy teddy bears, and bright rainbows. It speaks about the temple in Jerusalem lying in ruins and there being no more prophets who proclaim the Word of the Lord. The psalmist even goes so far as to say that the Lord God who is their shepherd has turned bright red in anger, smoke billowing from His ears, and the sheep are the source and recipients of God's anger. Not a happy thought. Life for the psalmist is about as depressed and cheerless and miserable as it can get. Ever felt that way? Of course you have. We all have. That's part of sinful human existence. Sin has corrupted us through and through, breaking and destroying God's good creation. This is the beauty of the psalms. They get you. Ever feel like God has forgotten about you? So did the psalmists. Ever feel like God just doesn't care what happens to you? So did the psalmists. The Word of God which they wrote speaks to every human condition and emotion. Most of all, the psalms point you to Jesus. God does not forget His children. He does not abandon them. What He does is send His only-begotten Son into the world to save the poor in spirit, those who feel downtrodden and abandoned and hopeless. The poor and needy of the Scriptures are those who have been so broken by sin that they have nothing left but to cry to Jesus for salvation. And salvation they received. Freely. All gift because Jesus has taken your sins and brokenness and hopelessness to Himself on the Cross and gives to you His glorious life, death, and resurrection. Jesus has purchased and redeemed you, as the psalmist begs. All the prayers of the psalms, all your prayers, are answered in Jesus. Therefore, you who were once poor and needy, praise the Name of the Lord your God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in the midst of His congregation for He has remembered and redeemed you. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. In suff'ring be Thy love my peace, In weakness be Thy love my pow'r; And when the storms of life shall cease, O Jesus, in that final hour, Be Thou my rod and staff and guide, And draw me safely to Thy side! Today's Reading: 1 John 3:13-18Daily Lectionary: Joshua 3:1-17; Acts 9:1-22By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. (1 John 3:16)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. What is love? We don't need to guess what it means to love someone. Jesus has shown us His and the Father's love for us, that He laid down His life for us. He did this in a sacrificial way, offering His body as a propitiation for our sin: a covering, a removal, a great exchange of His stuff given to us and our stuff taken away. See, the concept of love isn't that hard.Unfortunately, when the sinner exercises "love," he rarely cares about the other. Think about it: When I am in love with something or someone, the sinner within me really only cares what that something or someone can do for me. I care about how I feel and about how I see things. In loving something or someone, my hope is that my life is the one that is improved. But this isn't love. Sure, this might be what we think love is or what the world says love is, but this is never the way in which our Lord speaks about love. The love that He shows is always a love for the other, never for the self. The self is always sacrificed, the self always goes without, the self always suffers so that the other can have. That is the way of Christ and so this is the way of His Church.Bottom line is that you can't claim to be a Christian and not know how to love your neighbor. It is inherent in who Christ is and He speaks of what that means for us in His Word. We love our neighbor because it is commanded of us by our Lord. But do not think of this command as something you need to fulfill in order to be saved. Christ already has taken care of that. Remember the whole, "By this we know love," stuff? Instead, think of this command as something you need to fulfill because your neighbor needs to be served. Yes, your neighbor, never yourself. In Christ, love gives and sacrifices for the other, always for the other. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.In suff'ring be Thy love my peace, In weakness be Thy love my pow'r; And when the storms of life shall cease, O Jesus, in that final hour, Be Thou my rod and staff and guide, And draw me safely to Thy side! Jesus Ministries, Joan Boney ... This Podcast contains Psalm 39 through Psalm 60. Examples: Psalm 39 1 I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me. 2 I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred. 3 My heart was hot within me, while I was musing the fire burned: then spake I with my tongue, 4 LORD, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am. 5 Behold, THOU hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before THEE: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. 6 Surely every man walketh in a vain shew: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them. 7 And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in THEE. Psalm 40 1 I waited patiently for the LORD; and HE inclined unto me, and heard my cry. 2 HE brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. 3 And HE hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD. 4 Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies. 5 Many, O LORD my God, are THY wonderful works which THOU hast done, and THY thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto THEE: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered. Psalm 41 9 Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me. 10 But THOU, O LORD, be merciful unto me, and raise me up, that I may requite them. 11 By this I know that THOU favourest me, because mine enemy doth not triumph over me. 12 And as for me, THOU upholdest me in mine integrity, and settest me before THY face for ever. 13 Blessed be the LORD God of Israel from everlasting, and to everlasting. Amen, and Amen. Psalm 52 (A Psalm of David, when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, and said unto him, David is come to the house of Ahimelech. I Samuel 22) 1 Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man? the goodness of God endureth continually. 2 Thy tongue deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully. 3 Thou lovest evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. 4 Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue. 5 God shall likewise destroy thee for ever, HE shall take thee away, and pluck thee out of thy dwelling place, and root thee out of the land of the living. 6 The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him: 7 Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness. 8 But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever. 9 I will praise THEE for ever, because THOU hast done it: and I will wait on THY name; for it is good before THY saints. Psalm 54 (A Psalm of David, when the Ziphims came and said to Saul, Doth not David hide himself with us?) 1 Save me, O God, by THY name, and judge me by THY strength. 2 Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth. 3 For strangers are risen up against me, and oppressors seek after my soul: they have not set God before them. 4 Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul. 5 HE shall reward evil unto mine enemies: cut them off in THY truth. 6 I will freely sacrifice unto THEE: I will praise THY name, O LORD; for it is good. 7 For HE hath delivered me out of all trouble: and mine eye hath seen HIS desire upon mine enemies. Psalm 55 1 Give ear to my prayer, O God; and hide not THYSELF from my supplication. 2 Attend unto me, and hear me: I mourn in my complaint, and make a noise; 3 Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked: for they cast iniquity upon me, and in wrath they hate me. 4 My heart is sore pained within me: and the terrors of death are fallen upon me. 5 Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me. 6 And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest. 7 Lo, then would I wander far off, and remain in the wilderness. 8 I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest. 9 Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues: for I have seen violence and strife in the city. 10 Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof: mischief also and sorrow are in the midst of it. 11 Wickedness is in the midst thereof: deceit and guile depart not from her streets. 12 For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him: 13 But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance. 14 We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company. 15 Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them. 16 As for me, I will call upon God; and the LORD shall save me. Psalm 56 (A psalm of David, when the Philistines took him in Gath.) 1 Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me. 2 Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High. 3 What time I am afraid, I will trust in THEE. Psalm 57 (A Psalm of David, when he fled from Saul in the cave.) 1 Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in THEE: yea, in the shadow of THY wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast. 2 I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me. 3 He shall send from heaven, and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. God shall send forth HIS mercy and HIS truth. 4 My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword. 5 Be THOU exalted, O God, above the heavens; let THY glory be above all the earth. Psalm 59 (Psalm of David; when Saul sent, and they watched the house to kill him.) 1 Deliver me from mine enemies, O my God: defend me from them that rise up against me. 2 Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloody men. 3 For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul: the mighty are gathered against me; not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O LORD. 4 They run and prepare themselves without my fault: awake to help me, and behold. 5 THOU therefore, O LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel, awake to visit (judge) all the heathen: be not merciful to any wicked transgressors. 6 They return at evening: they make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city. 7 Behold, they belch out with their mouth: swords are in their lips: for who, say they, doth hear? 8 But THOU, O LORD, shalt laugh at them; THOU shalt have all the heathen in derision. 9 Because of his strength will I wait upon THEE: for God is my defence. 10 The God of my mercy shall prevent (go before) me: God shall let me see my desire upon mine enemies. 11 Slay them not, lest my people forget: scatter them by THY power; and bring them down, O Lord our shield. 12 For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips let them even be taken in their pride: and for cursing and lying which they speak. 13 Consume them in wrath, consume them, that they may not be: and let them know that God ruleth in Jacob unto the ends of the earth. 14 And at evening let them return; and let them make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city. 15 Let them wander up and down for meat, and grudge if they be not satisfied. 16 But I will sing of THY power; yea, I will sing aloud of THY mercy in the morning: for THOU hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble. Psalm 60 (Psalm of David, to teach; when he strove with Aramnaharaim and with Aramzobah, when Joab returned, and smote of Edom in the valley of salt twelve thousand.) 1 O God, THOU hast cast us off, THOU hast scattered us, THOU hast been displeased; O turn thyself to us again. 2 THOU hast made the earth to tremble; THOU hast broken it: heal the breaches thereof; for it shaketh. 3 THOU hast shewed THY people hard things: THOU hast made us to drink the wine of astonishment. 4 THOU hast given a banner to them that fear THEE, that it may be displayed because of the truth. 5 That THY beloved may be delivered; save with THY right hand, and hear me. 11 Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man. 12 Through God we shall do valiantly: for HE it is that shall tread down our enemies.
"Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food." (Isaiah 55:1-2)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. The ways of the Lord are not our ways. His thoughts are not like ours. They are far above us: As the heavens are high from the earth, so, too, are God's thoughts and ways far above ours. And this is a good thing. Often we think about this lofty fact in the light of God's being so much bigger, so much smarter than us. We think of it in regard to His omniscience, the fact that He knows all things and can see the game play out, whereas we are stuck in the game and can't see more than two moves in front of us. While this is all true, of course, I don't think this is what Isaiah means.Isaiah tells us to come and buy wine and milk, come and purchase them both so that we can be content. And so we come, with money in hand; money that looks like our works, money that looks like our self-assured pride, money that looks like our lineage or our ancestry or anything else that pertains to the Law. We come prepared to purchase that which we need, for this is the way of our lowly thoughts. But what we buy looks nothing like wine, nor does it taste anything like milk. We don't seem to mind, for we are quite assured that what we have purchased for ourselves is--we think--far, far better than what God has in store for us.But our Lord's ways are so much different, so much higher. He tells us to buy, but without money, which means, of course, that we aren't buying anything. Instead, it is all a gift given. For when I don't bring anything to the table, but get the most exquisite meal anyway, that means the Lord is going about His higher work once again. Gifts for everyone! Free and clear! Bellies all full, sins all forgiven, death all dead.Come, buy the things of your Lord! You won't believe how great the deal is. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Jesus, Thy boundless love to me No thought can reach, no tongue declare; Unite my thankful heart to Thee, And reign without a rival there! Thine wholly, Thine alone I am; Be Thou alone my constant flame.("Jesus, Thy Boundless Love to Me" LSB 683, st.1)Audio Reflections Speaker: Pastor Duane Bamsch
Intense pain and a debilitating headache prevented me from attending services with my local church family . . . again. Grieving the loss of community worship, I watched an online sermon. At first, complaints soured my experience. The poor sound and video quality distracted me. As I wrestled with my frustrations, a voice on the video warbled a familiar hymn. Tears flowed as I sang: “Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart. Naught be all else to me save that Thou art. Thou my best thought, by day or by night. Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.” Focusing on the gift of God’s constant presence, I worshiped Him while sitting in my living room. While Scripture affirms the vital, essential nature of corporate worship (Hebrews 10:25), God’s not bound within the walls of a church building. During Jesus’ chat with the Samaritan woman at the well, He defied all expectations of the Messiah (John 4:9). Instead of condemnation, Jesus spoke truth and loved her as she stood next to that well (v. 10). He revealed His intimate and sovereign knowledge of His children (vv. 17–18). Proclaiming His deity, Jesus declared that the Holy Spirit evoked true worship from the hearts of God’s people, not from a specific physical location (v. 23). When we focus on who God is, what He’s done, and all He’s promised, we can rejoice in His constant presence as we worship Him with other believers, in our living rooms . . . everywhere!
The playbook for Christians is clear: if you are in trouble, get on your knees, repent and pray! If you need help, trust the God who has provided people who have been there before! And doing so… may Christ “In suff'ring be Thy peace,In weakness be Thy pow'r;And when the storms of life shall cease,O Jesus, in that final hour,Be Thou my rod and staff and guide,And save me, who for me has died!” Like, share, and have a great week!!

Jesus calls us: by Thy mercies, Savior, may we hear Thy call, Give our hearts to Thine obedience, Serve and love Thee best of all. Amen. Elect from every nation, Yet one o'er all the earth, Her charter of salvation, One Lord, one faith, one birth; One holy name she blesses, Partakes one holy food, And to one hope she presses, With every grace endued. 'Mid toil and tribulation, And tumult of her war, She waits the consummation Of peace for evermore; Till with the vision glorious, Her longing eyes are blest, And the great Church victorious, Shall be the Church at rest. Yet she on earth hath union With God, the Three in One, And mystic sweet communion With those whose rest is won; O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we Like them, the meek and lowly, On high may dwell with Thee. Amen. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Rachel Fasham | Matthew 13:44-46 [Jesus said,] 'The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.' One stumbles across it by accident, while another seeks it out. Each finds something they recognise as being worth everything they own. What kinds of people are they, and what is the treasure? Rachel explains how we can become part of the story. The recording is an edited version of our Sunday service. It is introduced by Janet Chalmers, with a reading by Pat Clayton and prayers (recorded) from Phil Ennis. For copyright reasons we can't include the music in the recording. The opening hymn, "Great is Thy faithfulness", was also used in the service held on 14 June 2020 and the closing hymn, "Be Thou my vision", was used in the service held on 25 April 2021 (the links are to YouTube videos).

Join us in-person Wednesday, February 17th, between 8am-1pm at St Luke’s on 5th - 1150 W. 5th Ave. You can use the audio track (bring headphones!) and the liturgy below. OPENING PRAYER: God,You are the Maker of all things and judge of all that you have made. From the dust of the earth you have formed us and from the dust of death you will raise us up. By the redemptive power of the cross, create in us clean hearts, and put within us a new spirit -- that we may repent of our sins and lead lives worthy of your calling; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.SilenceScripture"Even now," declares the LORD, "return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning."Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.Who knows? He may turn and have pity and leave behind a blessing— grain offerings and drink offerings for the LORD your God. Excerpts from Psalm 51Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place. You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.SilenceLet’s pray together. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have failed to do. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have to loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name, Amen.SilenceBe Thou My Vision Verse 1 Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art Thou my best thought, by day or by night Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light. O Peerless Lord! Be Thou a shelter for this poor child and a kind and forgiving Master unto this erring and unhappy soul. O Lord! Though we are but worthless plants, yet we belong to Thy garden of roses. Though saplings without leaves and blossoms, yet we are a part of Thine orchard. Nurture this plant then through the outpourings of the clouds of Thy tender mercy and quicken and refresh this sapling through the reviving breath of Thy spiritual springtime. Suffer him to become heedful, discerning and noble, and grant that he may attain eternal life and abide in Thy Kingdom for evermore. ‘Abdu'l-Bahá --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bahaioasis/message

Assist them and, with the cohorts of the Supreme Concourse, make them victorious, so that each one of them may become like unto a regiment and conquer these countries through the love of God and the illumination of divine teachings. O God! Be Thou their supporter and their helper, and in the wilderness, the mountain, the valley, the forests, the prairies and the seas, be Thou their confidant—so that they may cry out through the power of the Kingdom and the breath of the Holy Spirit. Dear Manna Family, “O God, Our Help in Ages Past” By Isaac Watts “O God, Our Help in Ages Past,” is a hymn based on Psalm 90, and is regarded by many to be the greatest hymn in the English language. It was written by Isaac Watts, who is generally considered to be the father of the English hymn. The story is told that at age 16, Isaac complained to his father that what was sung in church was dull and profitless. His father replied, “Then write something better.” Watts took up his father’s challenge, and wrote over 700 hymns, many of which are still sung regularly. “O God, Our Help in Ages Past” was written in 1714, shortly before the death of Queen Anne. It was a time a great anxiety in England over who would succeed to the throne after her death. Psalm 90 was written by Moses probably during the time described in Numbers 20. Israel was nearing the end of their 40 years of wandering, and an entire generation had died in the desert because of their unbelief. Moses had been burying his fellow pilgrims for almost 40 years. His sister and brother, Miriam and Aaron, have both died, and Moses has been forbidden by God to enter into the Promised Land because of his disobedience. Moses is acutely conscious that human life on earth is very brief, in contrast to God’s eternal nature. Watts’ paraphrase of Psalm 90 reveals that God alone is our help, our hope, and our home. The last verse reads: “O God our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, Be Thou are guide while life shall last, and our eternal home.” Listen to this hymn, “O God, Our Help in Ages Past” Remember, God designed us to “do life together!” Love and prayers, Brad ••• Subscribe to listen each week as the Manna class learns and grows together through their in-depth study of God's Word. Lesson 42 in Come Follow, Me - 1 and 2 Timothy - October 28 - November 3, “Be Thou an Example of the Beleivers.”
The lyrics for Be Thou My Vision by Audrey Assad Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art Thou my best Thought, by day or by night Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord Thou my great Father, I Thy true son Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise Thou mine Inheritance, now and always Thou and Thou only, first in my heart High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art High King of Heaven, my victory won May I reach Heaven's joys, O bright Heav'n's Sun Heart of my own heart, whate'er befall Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all What is it that's important about a Vision Statement for my business? Lindsay Teague Moreno, business owner and author, says that a vision statement is "by contrast to a mission statement, is a big picture what the company will become in the future." Talking about a mission and vision statement "these two things will serve asthe basis for everything you say and do and put out into the world." If we don't know what our vision is and what we're creating and how that will be portrayed to the world, we're going to be floating around and not really having a direction. If you don't have a vision statement, my encouragement is that you create one. Your vision statement should be consistent with your values, your passions, your strengths and your spiritual gifts. Clear, easy to remember and in every day language. Google's vision statement is to "provide access to the world's information in one click." You might be a visionary, you might not. I think I am sort of a visionary, but I get really intimidated when I sit down to write out a vision statement. You can ask "where does God want me in the future?" "how is my business pointing to the cross?" "where does God want my business in the future?" Because, as christian business owners, we want to be representing Jesus as his ambassadors. We think about the verse like Eph 2:10 says, "For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." The other cool things about creating a vision statement, we can point to Jesus. I've frequently said your business doesn't have to "look" Christian, it doesn't need to have Christian symbols on it, what it does need, is to be pointing to Jesus. It's about what our business looks like and what we do once we go out into the world. I'm going to help you get super practical - I want you to use the next few minutes and download the worksheet to create your own vision statement. Dream about the direction that your business is going, what are the big dreams that God has placed on your heart? Part of my vision is that I'm going to be speaking to thousands of women which is so scary! But I know that God's got this and he's put that vision on my heart. I'd love for you to email me your vision statements so I can see what you've created. You can email me with those, questions or comments at dmr@daniellemroberts.com. Download the worksheets here.
1 Let us all with gladsome voice Praise the God of heaven, Who, to bid our hearts rejoice, His own Son has given. 2 To this vale of tears He comes, Here to serve in sadness, That with Him in heaven's fair homes We may reign in gladness. 3 We are rich, for He was poor; Is not this a wonder? Therefore praise God evermore Here on earth and yonder. 4 O Lord Christ, our Saviour dear, Be Thou ever near us; Grant us now a glad new year. Amen, Jesus, hear us.

August 1 Covenant Reaches Children And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. (Genesis 17:7) O Lord, Thou hast made a covenant with me, Thy servant, in Christ Jesus my Lord; and now, I beseech Thee, let my children be included in its gracious provisions. Permit me to believe this promise as made to me as well as to Abraham. I know that my children are born in sin and shapen in iniquity, even as those of other men; therefore, I ask nothing on the ground of their birth, for well I know that "that which is born of the flesh is flesh" and nothing more. Lord, make them to be born under Thy covenant of grace by Thy Holy Spirit! I pray for my descendants throughout all generations. Be Thou their God as Thou art mine. My highest honor is that Thou hast permitted me to serve Thee; may my offspring serve Thee in all years to come. O God of Abraham, be the God of his Isaac! O God of Hannah, accept her Samuel! If, Lord, Thou hast favored me in my family, I pray Thee remember other households of Thy people which remain unblest. Be the God of all the families of Israel. Let not one of those who fear Thy name be tried with a godless and wicked household, for Thy Son Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.
REFLECTION QUOTES “O sacred Head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down, Now scornfully surrounded with thorns, Thine only crown; O sacred Head, what glory, what bliss till now was Thine! Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call Thee mine. What Thou, my Lord, hast suffered, was all for sinners' gain; Mine, mine was the transgression, but Thine the deadly pain. Lo, here I fall, my Savior! 'Tis I deserve Thy place; Look on me with Thy favor, vouchsafe to me Thy grace. Men mock and taunt and jeer Thee, Thou noble countenance, Though mighty worlds shall fear Thee and flee before Thy glance. How art thou pale with anguish, with sore abuse and scorn! How doth Thy visage languish that once was bright as morn! Now from Thy cheeks has vanished their color once so fair; From Thy red lips is banished the splendor that was there. Grim death, with cruel rigor, hath robbed Thee of Thy life; Thus Thou hast lost Thy vigor, Thy strength in this sad strife. My burden in Thy Passion, Lord, Thou hast borne for me, For it was my transgression which brought this woe on Thee. I cast me down before Thee, wrath were my rightful lot; Have mercy, I implore Thee; Redeemer, spurn me not! Here I will stand beside Thee, from Thee I will not part; O Savior, do not chide me! When breaks Thy loving heart, When soul and body languish in death's cold, cruel grasp, Then, in Thy deepest anguish, Thee in mine arms I'll clasp. The joy can never be spoken, above all joys beside, When in Thy body broken I thus with safety hide. O Lord of Life, desiring Thy glory now to see, Beside Thy cross expiring, I'd breathe my soul to Thee. My Savior, be Thou near me when death is at my door; Then let Thy presence cheer me, forsake me nevermore! When soul and body languish, oh, leave me not alone, But take away mine anguish by virtue of Thine own! Be Thou my consolation, my shield when I must die; Remind me of Thy passion when my last hour draws nigh. Mine eyes shall then behold Thee, upon Thy cross shall dwell, My heart by faith enfolds Thee. Who dieth thus dies well.” ~ “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded,” attributed to Bernard of Clairvaux in 1153, translated from Latin to English James W. Alexander in 1830 SERMON PASSAGE 1 Peter 2:18-24 (ESV) 18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. 19 For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
Defining Moments – I Can Graham had just graduated from Theological College in Melbourne and was filing out of a huge hall with his fellow graduates, while the congregation sang the old hymn “Be Thou my Vision”. It was at that defining moment Graham sensed God was asking “Can you accept a vision from me to build a great church?” His quiet, inner response was “I Can” and that moment has helped shape Graham’s entire ministry. BE THOU MY VISIONOur version of the well loved Classic Irish HymnTraditional Irish Melody- Lyrics BelowWith a Celtic Bodhrán, Irish Bouzouki, Mandolin, 3 Celtic GuitarsBlessings, shiloh worship musicwww.shilohworshipmusic.comThe Celtic Bodhrán is a traditional Celtic drum played with a wooden mallet that is commonly used in Irish music--especially traditional Celtic songs. It's distinct, tuned-percussive sound has been a favorite choice for Irish composers and performers alike.Although not traditional, the Irish Bouzouki has found a home in the modern Irish traditional music scene. The Greek bouzouki was introduced to Irish traditional music in the late 1960s by Johnny Moynihan and then popularized by Donal Lunny, Andy Irvine, and Alec Finn. Today's Irish bouzouki (usually) has four courses of two strings (usually) tuned G2D3A3D4. The bass courses are most often tuned in unisons, one feature that distinguishes the Irish bouzouki from its Greek antecedent, although octaves in the bass are favored by some players.BE THOU MY VISIONE B7 E Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;B7 A B7 Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art.A B A BThou my best thought, by day or by night;C#m G#m A B7 EWalking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word.I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord.Thou my great Father, and I Thy true son;Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise;Thou mine inheritance, now and always.Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art.High King of heaven, my victory won;May I reach heaven’s joy’s, O bright heaven’s Sun!Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.© 2013 Shiloh Worship Music COPY FREELY;This Music is copyrighted to prevent misuse, however, permission is granted for non-commercial copying-Radio play permitted- Free Christian Worship Music on the iTunes StorePlease check out our free Christian Worship Music on the iTunes Store. The bass courses are most often tuned in unisons, one feature that distinguishes the Irish bouzouki from its Greek antecedent, although octaves in the bass are favored by some players.BE THOU MY VISIONE B7 E Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;B7 A B7 Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art.A B A BThou my best thought, by day or by night;C#m G#m A B7 EWalking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word.I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord.Thou my great Father, and I Thy true son;Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.Riches I heed not, nor mans empty praise;Thou mine inheretance, now and always.Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art.High King of heaven, my victory won;May I reach heavens joys, O bright heavens Sun!Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.© 2013 Shiloh Worship Music COPY FREELY;This Music is copyrighted to prevent misuse, however, permission is granted for non-commercial copying-Radio play permitted- Free Christian Worship Music on the iTunes StorePlease check out our free Christian Worship Music on the iTunes Store. The praise which hath dawned from Thy most august Self, and the glory which hath shone forth from Thy most effulgent Beauty, rest upon Thee, O Thou Who art the Manifestation of Grandeur, and the King of Eternity, and the Lord of all who are in heaven and on earth! I testify that through Thee the sovereignty of God and His dominion, and the majesty of God and His grandeur, were revealed, and the Daystars of ancient splendor have shed their radiance in the heaven of Thine irrevocable decree, and the Beauty of the Unseen hath shone forth above the horizon of creation. I testify, moreover, that with but a movement of Thy Pen Thine injunction “Be Thou” hath been enforced, and God’s hidden Secret hath been divulged, and all created things have been called into being, and all the Revelations have been sent down.I bear witness, moreover, that through Thy beauty the beauty of the Adored One hath been unveiled, and through Thy face the face of the Desired One hath shone forth, and that through a word from Thee Thou hast decided between all created things, caused them who are devoted to Thee to ascend unto the summit of glory, and the infidels to fall into the lowest abyss.I bear witness that he who hath known Thee hath known God, and he who hath attained unto Thy presence hath attained unto the presence of God. Great, therefore, is the blessedness of him who hath believed in Thee, and in Thy signs, and hath humbled himself before Thy sovereignty, and hath been honored with meeting Thee, and hath attained the good pleasure of Thy will, and circled around Thee, and stood before Thy throne. Woe betide him that hath transgressed against Thee, and hath denied Thee, and repudiated Thy signs, and gainsaid Thy sovereignty, and risen up against Thee, and waxed proud before Thy face, and hath disputed Thy testimonies, and fled from Thy rule and Thy dominion, and been numbered with the infidels whose names have been inscribed by the fingers of Thy behest upon Thy holy Tablets.Waft, then, unto me, O my God and my Beloved, from the right hand of Thy mercy and Thy loving-kindness, the holy breaths of Thy favors, that they may draw me away from myself and from the world unto the courts of Thy nearness and Thy presence. Potent art Thou to do what pleaseth Thee. Thou, truly, hast been supreme over all things. The remembrance of God and His praise, and the glory of God and His splendor, rest upon Thee, O Thou Who art His Beauty! I bear witness that the eye of creation hath never gazed upon one wronged like Thee. Thou wast immersed all the days of Thy life beneath an ocean of tribulations. At one time Thou wast in chains and fetters; at another Thou wast threatened by the sword of Thine enemies. Yet, despite all this, Thou didst enjoin upon all men to observe what had been prescribed unto Thee by Him Who is the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.May my spirit be a sacrifice to the wrongs Thou didst suffer, and my soul be a ransom for the adversities Thou didst sustain. I beseech God, by Thee and by them whose faces have been illumined with the splendors of the light of Thy countenance, and who, for love of Thee, have observed all whereunto they were bidden, to remove the veils that have come in between Thee and Thy creatures, and to supply me with the good of this world and the world to come. Thou art, in truth, the Almighty, the Most Exalted, the All-Glorious, the Ever-Forgiving, the Most Compassionate.Bless Thou, O Lord my God, the Divine Lote-Tree and its leaves, and its boughs, and its branches, and its stems, and its offshoots, as long as Thy most excellent titles will endure and Thy most august attributes will last. Protect it, then, from the mischief of the aggressor and the hosts of tyranny. Thou art, in truth, the Almighty, the Most Powerful. Bless Thou, also, O Lord my God, Thy servants and Thy handmaidens who have attained unto Thee. Thou, truly, art the All-Bountiful, Whose grace is infinite. No God is there save Thee, the Ever-Forgiving, the Most Generous. —Bahá’u’lláh(This Tablet is read at the Shrines of Bahá’u’lláh and the Báb. It is also frequently used in commemorating Their anniversaries.)p. 328; Read by ScottSubscribe in a reader
Some of you who have been with Piano by Joel since the beginning will recall that I've previously recorded Be Thou My Vision, to the tune of the old Irish folk tune, Slane. But since I am always trying to improve the quality, musicality, and expressiveness of my work, I wanted to bring you something new. (Fresh?) This version features the solo piano, of course, giving the arrangement a contemporary feel; but I think you'll also find that the playing style, and the accompanying cello, lend a certain ancient quality to the piece. Here are the lyrics, translated into English by Eleanor Hull around the turn of the century:Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heartNaught be all else to me, save that Thou artThou my best Thought, by day or by nightWaking or sleeping, Thy presence my lightBe Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true WordI ever with Thee and Thou with me, LordThou my great Father, I Thy true sonThou in me dwelling, and I with Thee oneBe Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fightBe Thou my Dignity, Thou my DelightThou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high TowerRaise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my powerRiches I heed not, nor man’s empty praiseThou mine Inheritance, now and alwaysThou and Thou only, first in my heartHigh King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou artHigh King of Heaven, my victory wonMay I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s SunHeart of my own heart, whatever befallStill be my Vision, O Ruler of allUntil next time.Click Here to ListenPurchase a CD from CD BabyPurchase songs on iTunesFresh Piano WebsiteContact JoelLink to Piano by Joel For lots of free, original music, check out http://www.freshpiano.com.
