Today I get to introduce you to my friend, Evian Schindler. You'll hear a little bit about how the two of us got connected at the beginning of our conversation, but Evian is one of the sweet, faithful people in my life who keep reminding me, even 11+ years after Jackson's death, that I am not forgotten in my grief. She continues to send me Bible verses, songs, and prayers and it means so much to me! I believe that Evian has been really tuned in to my continued grief and pain because she knows pain herself. I called this episode “Fighting for Joy in Chronic Illness”, and I think that's a good summary title, but as Evian and I talked about what to name it, we also threw out fighting for joy when you don't have answers, or in uncertainty, or without a clear diagnosis, or as you wait on God, or when you want to give up, or when you are in pain. As you'll hear, Evian's fight for joy has mostly centered around her physical health, but it's complicated, because as it so often goes, one aspect of our life tends to greatly affect the other areas of our life. So, for someone like Evian, the fight for joy can be pretty hard to define. I am excited to have Evian on the show today because, first, she's an amazing joy fighter and I want you to meet her! She has persevered through really hard things and I am thankful for her willingness to share some of the practical ways she has fought for joy. But secondly, I'm confident that her story will encourage YOU. Even if your circumstances are completely different, you probably know how discouraging it can be to find yourself in the midst of a story that God has written for your life that you just don't like. And don't want. How do you press forward in hope and fight for joy when circumstances feel out of your control? I think Evian's story and all of the tender things that she shares around her personal pain will be helpful for you to hear and I pray that you find some takeaways from this episode - a few things that will help you continue to fight for joy yourself as you press forward IN HOPE in the midst of this broken world. *Don't forget that as a Fighting for Joy listener you can receive 10% off of your first month of counseling services from BetterHelp, my podcast sponsor. Check out my link at betterhelp.com/fightingforjoy. Christian counseling can be such a huge help in this broken world and a major tool in the fight for joy. ** If this episode was encouraging to you, I'd like to ask you to please consider rating the Fighting for Joy podcast, and even leaving a review. Once you find my show, scroll down to where it says “tap to rate” or “write a review”. Tapping to rate literally takes a second or two, and writing a review can be quick as well. Just sharing that you enjoy listening, or that it's an encouragement to you is enough. The longer I do this the more I understand how helpful those ratings and reviews really are, so thanks for considering this. It means a lot!

In “Hope for Cynics”, Stanford psychologist Dr. Jamil Zaki, explores how cynicism is keeping us hopeless and inactive, which prevents us from creating real, lasting change. Authentic FAITH Godly authenticity is based on FAITH not FEELINGS. It is based on God's FAITHFULNESS not our FICKLENESS. Ps 139:11-12 Heb 11:1 Phil 4:11-13 ESV Rom 5:2-5 ESV Living our FAITH is not denying the FACTS - it's preferring the TRUTH James 1:2-4 ESV Standing in faith looks fake … until it doesn't! Rom 4:16-21 ESV 1) In the presence of God 2) In HOPE he believed 3) Faith expects the impossible and is not moved by the facts 4) Unbelief is silenced by praise 5) Developed faith is FULLY CONVINCED

It's all about what our favorites keep secret and what they choose to reveal. In Hope's case, she suddenly has a vested interest in keeping Liam in the dark about "something" that transpired between her and Thomas. In Ridge's case, he's ready to shout his news from the rooftops... Although rather than do so, he sends Carter over to Brooke's to lower the boom. 1 rumble EMBED Guest: Cristina Baker --- Hope in 60 Seconds: Encountering the God of the Impossible Now more than ever, we all face trying situations. The hope we need and hunger for is not a strategy or state of mind, but faith in Jesus. He stands secure for us in the face of every trial, from loss to sickness to injustice. Through 20 short prayers, 10 personal stories of miraculous transformations, and Biblical teachings, Hope in 60 Seconds will help you take the first steps towards a journey of security in the hope of Jesus. “At twenty-one I was as far from hopeful as anyone could get. Maybe as far as you are now.” These are the words of Cristina Baker as she considered her traumatic life: from childhood abuse to troubled teen years, to a descent into substance abuse, she resonates with a lost world who understands first-hand how easy it is to lose hope. Then, just as she was about to go to jail for drug possession, the Hero of Hope, Jesus Christ, came into her life and set her on a completely new path. If you are weary and doubting, Cristina understands. Hope in 60 Seconds will help you to: Be encouraged and empowered by someone who has been in a similar place of discouragement and discovered Christ's authority and love. Learn how Jesus establishes hope and begin to experience it first-hand in the darkest of circumstances, grow in your ability to connect with Jesus and find the hope you have longed for all of your life and prove that a connection with Jesus is the ultimate source of hope. The message of Cristina's life is Jesus, the hope we need and hunger for—a hope that will stand secure in the face of brokenness, loss, sickness, abuse, a brain tumor diagnosis, injustice, and death. In Hope in 60 Seconds, she shares the steps of her journey to encounter, receive, and walk in the hope of Jesus and offers readers powerful wisdom on how they can take the same journey for themselves. Sin, at its core, is deceptive. Sin doesn't want us to know how deep it is in us so that we remain ignorant to its hold over us, that we won't overcome it. Because an enemy that you refuse to acknowledge is an enemy that will thrive. Listen as Pastor Chris begins the series "In Suffering and In Hope" and how suffering is always, always at the core, in sin.

Hope is a Garden: Poems and Essays from the 2020 Pandemic with Mary McManus How do you hold onto hope in the midst of a pandemic? How do you hold onto hope when civil unrest, tyranny and violence dominate the headlines? In Hope is a Garden: Poems and Essays from the 2020 Pandemic, polio and trauma survivor Mary McManus, MSW inspires us with her wisdom and poetry chronicling her experiences during an unprecedented time in American History. About the Author: Mary McManus, MSW has known challenges throughout her life beginning at age 5 when she contracted paralytic polio in one of the last polio epidemics in the United States. She endured years of abuse at the hands of family members from the age of 8 until 17 when her father ended his life. At the age of 53 she was diagnosed with Post-Polio Syndrome, a progressive neuromuscular disease and was told to prepare to spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair. She refused to take the diagnosis sitting down. Her pen became her divining rod for healing harnessing the power of the mind/body connection through poetry. She embarked on a journey that took her from taking a leap of faith leaving behind her award winning career as a VA social worker to the finish line of the 2009 Boston Marathon, and many adventures as a woman transformed through the sport of running. Out of the rubble of her past, Mary dug deep to discover the treasure of who she was always meant to be. Her Spirit shines with brilliant resilience as she conquered every challenge going the distance on the roads and in her life. Mary is the author of Feel the Heal: An Anthology of Poems to Heal Your Life, her Trilogy of Transformation that chronicles her health and wellness journey and Hope is a Garden: Poems and Essays from the 2020 Pandemic. Mary holds a BS in Communications from Boston University, an MSW from Boston College and many fond memories of her veterans and their families who blessed her life when she worked at the VA. She lives in Chestnut Hill Massachusetts with her husband, Tom, and their lovely cat Jamie. https://www.marymcmanus.com https://hopeisagarden.blogspot.com/ Learn more about Dr. Bernie here: http://berniesiegelmd.com/
This past year has been like nothing we have ever experienced. In “Hope is Rising”, Pastor Dave Gustavsen shows us how we can find hope, even when things look hopeless.

IN HOPE & AGAINST HOPE // Cherese Carter, October 11th 2020 by Grace Church
PDF LinkAs featured on the Jesus Calling podcast, Relevant podcast, Catalyst podcast, and The Alli Worthington Show podcast with Alli Worthington. “I want to believe, I want to have hope, but....” Pastor and best-selling author Craig Groeschel hears these words often and has asked them himself. We want to know God, feel his presence, and trust that he hears our prayers, but in the midst of great pain, we may wonder if he really cares about us. Even when we have both hope and hurt, sometimes it’s the hurt that shouts the loudest. Can God be good when life is not? In Hope in the Dark, Groeschel explores the story of the father who brought his demon-possessed son to Jesus, saying, “I believe! Help my unbelief!” In the man’s sincere plea, Jesus heard the tension in the man’s battle-scarred heart. He healed not only the boy but the father, too, driving out the hopelessness that had overtaken him. He can do the same for us today. As Groeschel shares his pain surrounding the current health challenges of his daughter, he acknowledges the questions we may ask in our own deepest pain: “Where was God when I was being abused?” “Why was my child born with a disability?” “Why did the cancer come back?” “Why are all my friends married and I’m alone?” He invites us to wrestle with such questions as we ask God to honor our faith and heal our unbelief. In the middle of your profound pain, you long for authentic words of understanding and hope. You long to know that even in overwhelming reality, you can still believe that God is good. Rediscover a faith in the character, power, and presence of God. Even in the questions. Even now.
Romans chapter 5 begins a large section of scripture where the Apostle Paul focuses on the core ideas of the Gospel. He lays out the doctrines of Justification by Faith, Standing in Grace, and Rejoicing in Hope. As he wraps up this section of the book, he clearly focuses on the idea that we live In Hope. The Apostle explains that we are in labor with all of creation in the “pains of childbirth.” We anticipate the fullness of the kingdom of heaven that is here, and coming soon. We wait IN HOPE.Support the show (http://bolcf.org/give/)
