For me it started with Blade Runner. I remember being blown away by the majestic sweeping images while Vangelis played in the background. It was that mixture of noir and sci-fi, dark tech and it just oozed attitude.Snow Crash was next, the 1992 novel that really opened my eyes to the full cyberpunk experience. Ghost in the Shell, Altered Carbon, Akira, Battle Angel Alita, the Matrix and more recently Kacey Ezell's Second Chance Angel rounded out my hard drive. As for roleplaying I played in a short lived GURPS Cyberpunk campaign, and while I enjoyed it, I felt like it was missing something. Something that didn't quite connect what was in my head to the game we were playing. So, a couple of years ago when Mike asked if I was interested in playing Cyberpunk Red I jumped at the chance. It was fun and I had a good time, but to be honest, it was missing something. That same something that was missing the first time I gave it a go. The cyberpunk in my head just wasn't jiving with the cyberpunk in the game. Then, at the urging of Mike and Christina I downloaded Cyberpunk 2077. And that was it. What I had been missing in those games is what I found in 2077. The world of cyberpunk. The world your characters lived in. In the table top attempts, the story took front row to the world, but for cyberpunk to really flourish the world has to take priority over the story. What is it to be human? What is it to truly live? After a few hours of 2077 I hit Mike back up.“So, I would love to play more cyberpunk, especially in the 2077 world.”His response was “Well, I'm working on it”And here we are. We thought this would be a perfect opportunity to talk more Cyberpunk while getting a behind the scenes look at how Mike goes about building a campaign.Mike, I described what I was always chasing in cyberpunk. What about you? What draws you to cyberpunk?

We've been Borged! Oh no! Specifically, we've been I, Borged as each of today's Borg-themed episodes are based in some way around Hugh Borg. I don't think Borg's his surname, but I don't recall hearing any other name for him. First up is I, Borg from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Crusher and LaForge have a new pet and it's a deadly Borg! A traumatised Picard's eager to use him to do a genocide and Guinan's with him. Oh no! Second we have Star Trek: Lower Decks' I, Excretus where attempts to perfect a Holodeck trial lead to Boimler getting a bit too close to the Borg and some fun, awful scenarios which happen when Upper and Lower Decks have to swap. Finally there's Picard's Impossible Box, which turns out to be both a Borg Cube used for rehab and a puzzle box that a weird hot Romulan uses for meditation when he's not getting way too close to his sister. Picard has a nice reunion with Hugh and there's a Lord of the Rings Elf who's there for some reason. 09:28 Star Trek: The Next Generation “I, Borg” 37:38 Star Trek: Lower Decks “I, Excretus” 59:44 Picard “The Impossible Box” Pedant's Corner: Charlie is going to have to recap Star Trek: Nemesis Alice Krige's surname is pronounced “Kree-Guh” Talking points include: Battle Angel Alita, Tetsuo: The Iron Man, Reanna being cancer free, Berserk, Joe Abercrombie, James Barclay, Elric, Picard would make a great Number Two in The Prisoner, Visionaries, X-Men: Fatal Attraction, Batman hologram trading cards, Matlock Bath's Hologram Museum, Star Wars: Dark Droids, Whoopi Goldberg would make a great Doctor Who, a poop joke, Nemesis of the Pod Ed Sheeran, Funny Games, James VanDerBeek, not forgiving people for reminding us that Young Sheldon exists, mocking Geoff Johns' career again, crowbarring The Legion of Super-Heroes into a recap, pesto, Grant Morrison, The X-Men's Sentient Danger Room, being tired old men, Bond themes, Miles' issues with James Bond, Alan Partridge, Orbital's The Box, Evil Goth Merlin from the TV Show Merlin, Elnor is an elf ranger, Elnor has taken a level in rogue, Elnor has only seen the Lord of the Rings movies (probably not even the extended versions), Elnor saw the 90's Three Musketeers or the Paul Anderson one, Rifts (Charlie will never run Rifts), JJ Abrams naming, weird incest siblings, Penny Dreadful, a weird The Cube room. This week the Bloody Good Film Podcast is digging a little more into Anime with one of the few properties that Josh is actually familar with Alita: Battle Angel... or Battle Angel: Alita...or Battle Angel... Or Gunm... American's had to make this confusing.First on deck is the 1993 "movie" Battle Angel. Which is more of a two episode cartoon smooshed together to come in just under and hour. But it's movie like, and Letterbox has it so that's good enough for the low standards of this podcast. We'll dig into our thoughts on Alita's...er Gally's story in this classic anime based on the Manga. After that we tackle James Camerons...er Robert Rodriguez's live action adaption, Alita: Battle Angel. Josh and Jesse dig into what does...and what definitely doesn't work about this movie. Most important we will answer whether or not Battle Angel and Alita: Battle Angel... (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep) يتغلب كيس ومولي على التدخلات القانونية السيبرانية ومحاولة خيانة من ريفيرا لدمج وينترميوت مع نيورومانسر، وينتهي الأمر بكيس يعيش في عالم جديد شجاعأفلام:· Escape from New York (1981)[40][41]· Burst City (1982)[42]· Tron (1982)[43]· Blade Runner (1982)[44]· Brainstorm (1983)[45]· Videodrome (1983)[46]· Repo Man (1984)· The Terminator (1984)· Brazil (1985)· RoboCop (1987)[47]· The Running Man (1987)· Gunhed (1989)[48]· Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989)· Circuitry Man (1990)[49]· RoboCop 2 (1990)· Hardware (a.k.a. In this episode, Chris welcomes back Lisa from the "I Love That Movie" podcast to discuss the first volume of one of her favorite manga, “Battle Angel Alita”. Yukito Kishiro creates what many consider to be his magnum opus with this seminal manga series. In a dump in the lawless settlement of Scrapyard, far beneath the mysterious space city of Zalem, disgraced cyber-doctor Daisuke Ido makes a strange find: the detached head of a cyborg woman who has lost all her memories. He names her Alita and equips her with a powerful new body, the Berserker. While Alita remembers no details of her former life, a moment of desperation reawakens in her nerves the legendary school of martial arts known as Panzer Kunst. In a place where there is no justice but what people make for themselves, Alita decides to become a hunter-killer, tracking down and taking out those who prey on the weak. But can she hold onto her humanity as she begins to revel in her own bloodlust?

Many expected that James Cameron's long promised adaptation of the famed manga Battle Angel Alita would never materialize, but when the megastar director conceded the reigns to Robert Rodriguez, the project was at last brought to life. Sadly, the uncanny valley effect of the film's bug-eyed CG protagonist did not entice large audiences, and while well regarded by fans of the manga, the response was not effusive enough to guarantee the sequel promised in the film's ending. Join Sebastian, Chris and Rodney as they strip this cyborg for parts and debate if there's still a way forward for this cyberpunk wannabe franchise.

Dystopian societies appear in many artistic works, most notably in stories set in a future time period. A Clockwork Orange is a 1971 dystopian crime film adapted, produced, and directed by Stanley Kubrick, based on Anthony Burgess's 1962 novel of the same name. It employs disturbing, violent images to comment on psychiatry, juvenile delinquency, youth gangs, and other social, political, and economic subjects in a dystopian near-future Britain. Equilibrium is a 2002 American dystopian science fiction film written and directed by Kurt Wimmer, and starring Christian Bale, Emily Watson, and Taye Diggs. The film follows John Preston (Christian Bale), an enforcement officer in a future in which feelings and artistic expression are outlawed and citizens take daily injections of powerful psychoactive drugs to suppress their emotions. After accidentally missing a dose, Preston begins to experience emotions, which makes him question his morality and moderate his actions while attempting to remain undetected by the suspicious society in which he lives. Ultimately, he aids a resistance movement using advanced martial arts, which he was taught by the regime he is helping to overthrow. Alita: Battle Angel is a 2019 American cyberpunk action film based on Yukito Kishiro's manga series Gunnm (or Battle Angel Alita in English). It was directed by Robert Rodriguez, produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau, and written by Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis. Rosa Salazar stars through performance-capture animation as Alita, a cyborg who awakens in a new body with no memory of her past and sets out to uncover her destiny. Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley and Keean Johnson star in supporting roles. The Bad Batch is a 2016 American dystopian thriller film directed and written by Ana Lily Amirpour. The film is about a young woman (Suki Waterhouse) exiled to a desert where she is attacked by a group of cannibals (led by Jason Momoa), barely escaping alive to a bizarre settlement run by a charismatic leader (Keanu Reeves). Other actors include Jim Carrey, Giovanni Ribisi, and Diego Luna. It was selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Prize. It was released in theaters on June 23, 2017, by Neon. www.wyrdrealities.net follow us on social linktr.ee/wyrdrealities --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wyrd-realities/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wyrd-realities/support

After the ApocalypseA Pandemic Survival StorySeason two, Episode three “The Hungry River”Janet glared through the sleet, up the hill, searching for the Humvees that she expected to appear over the crest at any moment. “Persistent deadbeats…” She swore under her breath as the chain saw chattered in her hands. She knew if she could slow them down, even for a minute, it might give the bus enough time to escape....Outro S2 E3https://shows.acast.com/after-the-apocalypse Hello and welcome back survivors. Here we are, episode 3 of season two and it feels like we're hitting our stride. This was a fun episode to construct. I love the visual of the river devouring the bridge. Just a great picture in my mind's eye. The other thing that happened here, not to give you too much of the sausage-making, was a roller coaster ride. It's a series of tension builds and releases, where we are just letting you off the hook and we slap you again with a new shock wave. I would be interested in your feedback on how all that worked for you. We are moving right along in season 2 and keeping up our production schedule. Which is great because I've been super-busy in my real job. Last weekend was the Wasteland Weekend. We'll have to ask Mike Darling how it all turned out this year with the actual apocalypse still going on in the US. It sounded like they had a full schedule out there in the desert and that attendance was going to be good. As a reminder that is a desert festival every year with an apocalypse theme. Which sounds scary and dangerous – but probably is just a lot of fun. Imagine you're out for a hike in the desert and you come across a gang of folks dressed like Mad Max characters? Would you be scared? You probably shouldn't be. In my experience the folks that do this type of character playing aren't the dangerous types, they're the arty types. I‘ll tell you a story. A few years back I had to drive into Boston to pick up my daughter who was attending Anime Boston, one of the big regional conventions. I pull into the Marriott and the place is full of kids in bizarre costumes. Monsters, aliens, etc. you get it. And I asked the bellman who was standing there if this was a hard week for the hotel with all these crazy, costumed kids hanging about? And, he said, “No, they're just nice kids. No trouble at all. Last week we had the police convention, and they tore the place up.” That was a lesson for me. You can't judge a book by it's cover so to speak. Speaking of books and covers, I'm still stalled out on the season one manuscript. I've been super busy. But, I'll keep working on it. As long as I'm still creating new content the offering just keeps getting stronger. Sampled a couple new Apocalypse type media pieces this last week that I'll share. I watched Alita Battle Angel 2019 American cyberpunk action film based on Japanese manga artist Yukito Kishiro's 1990s series Battle Angel Alita. It is loosely a cyber-punk themed future Earth after some apocalyptic war with Mars. But this only has a pasing cyber-punk content, it's more of an anime themed film. I have always loved the cyber-punk genre of science fiction. Neil Stephenson's Snow Crash was a revelation in 1992. It brought cool to tech. I wasn't that much of a comic book or anime kid. Anyhow, what keeps this film from being the same as every other Anime-marshal-arts film is it's investment level and pedigree. It was produced by James Cameron, while he was making Avatar and you can see the Avatar influence. Especially that mildly creepy performance captured animation. It was directed by Robert Rodriguez, yes that Robert Rodriguez of El Mariachi Fame and, by the way you should read his book Rebel without a crew if you haven't, it's a fantastic glimpse into the making of a director. I bet Makeshift sleeps with a copy under his pillow. Alita is a decent story and a watchable movie. It's got some good acting and tries hard. Worth a watch if you're decompressing after a long day in the salt mines. I also watched the original Ip Man movie. This is a Chinese martial arts movie dubbed in English with the subtitles. But, it's a Chinese marshal arts movie, so do you really need subtitles? Do you really need dialogue? It is just one big marshal art movie trope, but somehow it works. It think it's because the main character, played by Donnie Yen, is just so likable. So again, worth a watch if you've got time on your hands and is currently on Netflix. The protagonist, Ip Man, is based very loosely on the story of the kung fu master who trained Bruce Lee. And if you don't know who Bruce Lee is then there is no hope for you. I am still working my way through Heinlein's Stranger in a strange land. I'll have more thoughts on it when I get to the end. It gets a bit slow in the middle. Next, our friend Dave, one of the editors here at Apocalypse HQ, tipped us off to an apocalypse podcast story. It is on a podcast named StarShipSofa – all one word and the story he tipped me to is episode 603. It is a story by Elad Haber titled “Number One Hit” read by Jonathan Danz. I listened to it on my long bike ride last weekend and it was outstanding. So my survivor friends, I hope you're enjoying Season two. We are up over 25,000 downloads. I've been informed by one of you that you can just search for “After the Apocalypse” in FaceBook and that will probably get you there. It's a packed office at Film ‘89 Towers for Episode 23 of The Film ‘89 Podcast as Skye, Steve, Neil and Haydn review the (kind of) live-action adaptation of beloved Japanese Manga, Battle Angel Alita, retitled, Alita: Battle Angel, from director Robert Rodriguez and producer James Cameron. It's a showcase of often brilliant special effects and makes superb use of the 3D and IMAX formats but how does the film hold up as a whole and is it a worthy and worthwhile adaptation? We discuss our favourite animated films as well as reading out some of our listeners' picks and we answer the usual listener questions including one asking what our favourite podcasts are. Time Codes: 00:00:29 - Introduction 00:02:35 - Some context, and thanks! 00:05:19 - Battle Angel Alita: Deluxe Edition, Vol. 1 00:50:09 - Children of the Whales, Vol. 1 01:26:06 - Wrap up 01:27:21 - Contact us On this episode of The Comics Alternative's manga series, Shea and Derek discuss two recent publications that, in one way or another, explore a post-apocalyptic world. They begin with a classic, the first volume of Yukito Kishiro's Battle Angel Alita. Kodansha Comics has recently started to release this legendary cyberpunk series in nice deluxe hardbound editions -- the second deluxe volume is due for release in late February -- and the guys are excited that the title is back in print. Neither Shea nor Derek was familiar with Battle Angel Alita before, outside of hearing about the upcoming James Cameron/Robert Rodriguez film adaptation due out in 2018, but now both are hooked. In their overview, the guys highlight the kinetic quality of the illustrations, the ways in which Kishiro contextualizes even his most nasty characters, the complexities (and embedded mysteries) of his storyworld, and the ways in which he visualizes the title character...which, for Shea at least, is a little problematic. Next, they look at Abi Umeda's Children of the Whales, Vol. 1 (VIZ Media). This is another post-apocalyptic narrative -- at least the guys think things are set in a post-apocalyptic world -- and the storyworld that Umeda maps out is quite complex. In fact, as Derek suggests, there are so many nuances in this first volume that the story runs the risk of toppling over due to sheer ambiguity. However, the author is able to maintain a comprehendible balance in her tale, although several passages may require more than one reading. There are a lot of questions posed in this book, and while Derek is willing to continue on in future volumes to get the fuller picture, Shea isn't as enamored of the story. While he admires Umeda's art, he feels that the story's premise, especially as it relates to the Committee of Elders, may be a bit too predictable. Still, Derek feel that the volume is worth checking out.
