SynopsisToday marks the birthday of American composer, choral conductor and educator Betty Jackson King. She was born in Chicago in 1928, where she earned her master's degree in composition at Roosevelt University. Her master's thesis was an opera, Saul of Tarsus, whose libretto was written by her father, the Rev. Frederick D. Jackson.King is perhaps best known for her sacred and choral works, especially her arrangements of spirituals, and, according to her family, her musical career reflected her deep religious faith. “Over my head, I hear music in the air, so there must be a God somewhere,” was her oft-stated creed.King also wrote secular works, including a ballet for children, chamber works, art songs and solo pieces for piano and organ. She was an active teacher and choral conductor in her native Chicago before moving to Wildwood, New Jersey, where she taught, conducted and composed for the rest of her life.A few years before King's death in 1994, soprano Kathleen Battle performed and recorded "Ride-Up in the Chariot,” one of Jackson's spiritual arrangements, at a televised Carnegie Hall concert of spirituals conducted by James Levine.Music Played in Today's ProgramBetty Jackson King (1928-1994): Spring Intermezzo, fr Four Seasonal Sketches; Helen Walker-King, vn; Gregory Walker, p. The Black Mind Garden: ReMap Your Mind! Create a Life You Design
SHOW NOTES: This week, Dr. Kelly and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about how you can leave a love legacy by starting conversations with your loved ones about what you want after you transition, and building your legacy team. Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Kelly Jackson King · Physician, Obstetrician and Gynecologist · Full time Entrepreneur at home who provides Legal Services Solutions to small businesses and Family Consultant [01:00] Love and leaving a legacy Many people are not at ease discussing death, passing, and final wishes. Sometimes, it can be hard for people to talk about, let alone be in the situation of seeing their loved ones die. Getting comfortable with this type of conversation is a good starting point. Rethinking of this process as “love and leaving a legacy” changes the conversation. It then becomes a love catalyst in caring for the person or people who might not going to be of age to be able to care for themselves. [09:15] Starting Conversations about final wishes with your loved ones A good place to start this process is by thinking what you would want, who are the people important to you are and what you have. This doesn't have to be big but just a few moments to think about, so as to not leave it to the family to get into disarray when the time comes. One thing to note it making sure to have the conversation in a neutral time – meaning before anyone is ill. Doing it when everyone is healthy so it isn't a conversation about death and dying but instead about love and legacy. [14:05] Choosing your key person Technically, the document needs to have at least two other people. For people with children under the age of 18, the most important is about the raising of the child. There needs to be a guardian and a trustee who will manage the financial aspect of the person. Most of the time, it is one and the same person. When choosing a guardian, using the best judgment and opinion about who is going to instill the values that most closely aligns with you, capable, and financially able. [25:40] Building your legacy team It's important that everybody knows who everybody is. They need to all be able to be in communication. The legacy team starts with you thinking about what you wanted, next, the person closest to you, then the people you're designating the responsibilities. This gives the person the chance to respectfully decline when they don't think they're ready for the said responsibility. It should involve the people you designated and the age of the children. If you're afraid of them knowing, they may not be the right beneficiaries. ----------- Catch up with Dr. Kelly Jackson King by visiting her at www.kellyjacksonking.com or contacting her at ls.kjackking@gmail.com. Today’s date marks the birthday of the American composer, choral conductor, and educator Betty Jackson King. She was born in Chicago in 1928, where she earned her M.A. in composition at the Roosevelt University. Her Master’s thesis was an opera, entitled “Saul of Tarsus,” whose libretto was written by her father, the Reverend Frederick D. Jackson. Betty Jackson King is perhaps best known for her sacred and choral works, especially her arrangements of spirituals, and, according to her family, her musical career reflected her deep religious faith. “Over my head, I hear music in the air, so there must be a God somewhere,” was her oft-stated creed. But King also wrote secular works, including a ballet for children, chamber works, art songs, and solo pieces for piano and organ. She was an active teacher and choral conductor in her native Chicago before moving to Wildwood, New Jersey, where she taught, conducted, and composed for the rest of her life. A few years before Betty Jackson King’s death in 1994, soprano Kathleen Battle performed and recorded "Ride-Up in The Chariot,” one of Jackson’s spiritual arrangements, at a gala televised Carnegie Hall concert of spirituals conducted by James Levine.

From the beginning, Jackson's administration was riddled with controversy. Citizens mobbed the White House on inauguration day, breaking furniture and fine china. They were only lured out with alcohol. And then there was the "Petticoat Affair." His Secretary of War, John Henry Eaton, was the ideal candidate for what we now call the Secretary of State, but there was one small problem... the most beautiful woman in Washington. John was having an affair with a sailor's wife which started rumors around town... that was nothing compared to the firestorm of gossip around town after he married her just after her husband's tragic death at sea. There was widespread chaos and controversy and Jackson's term was just getting started.Support us by supporting our sponsors!
