Mid-Atlantic - conversations about US, UK and world politics
Description:One week after Frank Hestor's attack on Diane Abbott, we explore the persistent challenges of racism and misogyny within the British political landscape. Our distinguished panel, featuring MP Claudia Webb, Leah Brown from Broadstairs Consulting, and political analyst Corey Bernard, look at the troubling experiences faced by black women in positions of power, particularly highlighting the distressing experiences of Diane Abbott. As we dissect the implications of leadership in combatting racial prejudice and examine the dichotomy of progress and persistent bigotry, this conversation sheds light on the intricate dynamics of race, identity, and politics in the UK.Show Notes:Claudia Webb MP shares her experiences of anti-black racism and misogyny as a black woman in Parliament, offering insights into the broader context of institutional racism and its impact on political figures.Discussion on the lack of leadership in addressing racism, with specific reference to recent comments by Tory donor Frank Hester and the response (or lack thereof) from political leaders.Leah Brown analyses the failure in political leadership and its connection to systemic issues, including conflicts of interest and the need for integrity and accountability.Corey Bernard reflects on the role of identity politics in the political spectrum and how expectations differ across party lines, offering a unique perspective on diversity within political leadership.Claudia Webb provides a closing statement, emphasising the need for genuine leadership to confront and eradicate racism and misogyny within the political arena.Final thoughts from host Roifield Brown and the importance of continued vigilance against racism and sexism in all sectors of society.QuotesClaudia Webb MP: "The level of anti-Black racism and misogyny that I experienced as a Black Member of Parliament on the left is probably unprecedented... Black women, particularly those in positions of power, are targeted for the most vile levels of hate, targeted not just for being black, but also for being female and having the audacity to be in a position of power and then having the audacity to be on the left as well."Leah Brown: "Lack of leadership is my favourite topic... The key area in which there has been lack of leadership shown here by the Prime Minister is in relation to conflicts of interest... Fundamentally if you can't address the conflicts of interest that arise in a way that doesn't give rise to toxic leadership, you also can't expect those same individuals to show leadership."Corey Bernard: "Identity politics in this context, leading with race or ethnicity, is definitely something perhaps more expected on the left, right? As opposed to on the right... People are not very comfortable, basically, when you show who you are in terms of your identity."Claudia Webb MP: "Black people in positions of leadership does not mean that we're going to see change. We are talking about a lack of political leadership, there are opportunists that are using this for political gain... Black people in positions of leadership does not necessarily mean that we're going to see change, we're talking about a minority, but we're talking about a lack of political leadership." What's the episode about? In this episode, hear Angeline Morrison at the 2023 Falmouth University Haunted Landscapes conference on voicing Black British ancestors through music, folk music and death, W. E. B. Du Bois and sorrow songs, unregistered lives, the stories of Frances Elizabeth Johnson and Caesar, a formerly enslaved African buried in Hartlepool, as well as pet loss. Plus, highlights from the Haunted Landscapes conference. Who is Angeline? Angeline Morrison is a singer, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who explores traditional song with a deep love, respect and curiosity. Angeline mostly makes music in the genres of wyrd folk and psych folk, her work infused with elements of soul music, literature, ‘60s beat pop sounds, folklore, myth and the supernatural. With a feral approach, a handmade sonic aesthetic and a belief in the importance of tenderness, Angeline's original compositions and re-stitchings of traditional songs focus on storytelling and the small things that often go unnoticed. Sounds like solitude, memory, nostalgia, a rainy walk amongst trees... In July 2022, Angeline was announced as the fourth winner of the prestigious Christian Raphael Prize at Cambridge Folk Festival, which generously supports the development of emerging talent in the folk genre. In December 2022 The Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience was voted No 1 Folk album of the year in The Guardian. Her album The Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience (released October 2022, Topic Records) is a work of re-storying. The historic Black presence in the UK dates back to at least Roman times, yet is often hidden, forgotten or unacknowledged. The populations of enslaved African people and their descendants in the USA have their bodies of folk song, which are vitally important for containing histories, expressing feelings, giving voice and claiming presence… but the Black ancestors of the UK have no equivalent body of song. The Sorrow Songs begins to address this. It is a gift to the forgotten Black ancestors of these islands, and to the folk community here today. The album uses history and imagination to tell stories of UK Black ancestors in the sonic style of UK traditional and folk music. What is the Haunted Landscapes conference? Ready for some useful careers resources for black students (in or connected to the UK)? You're in the right place! This is an episode of the Dive Into Your Career podcast - inspired by UK Black History Month. I know I know - when you are black every day of the year, it sometimes makes you wonder why there is such a focus on Black History Month. I get it... and am here for constructive conversations like this but the fact remains that awareness days can be so powerful because even though there should be equity and meritocracy and all those good things - that is not the world we currently live in. So, one of the contributions to UK Black History Month (which will exist way beyond) is this episode about useful careers resources for black (and mixed race including black) students and graduates. There are some brilliant organisations who are making major moves towards the sort of world many (admittedly not all) of us want to see - and in this episode I share a few of them. Some I have a direct relationship with and experience of and some I don't. Listen in for more details about each of these organisations and of course go on to do your own research and check them out yourselves as that will be the best way to know more about what they do and if you are eligible to connect with them. In this episode, you will hear about: 10000 Black Interns DiverseAmos Bursary Windsor FellowshipRare Recruitment Target Oxbridge SEO LondonBYP Network Cocoa Kids Such good stuff! This week's episode has been a while in the making and it all started with a voice note. My friend, beauty editor Ava Welsing-Kitcher, who recently moved to the US, told me how popular the UK Black Girl makeup look was becoming on TikTok and that I needed to take a look. A few hours later and I was hooked; not just on the makeup style itself, which we'll go into in this episode, but I loved the supportive comments shared between the US and UK creators. The two key names that came up over and over again when I started researching the trend that's racked up 38million views on TikTok, were that of Uche Natori and Melachild. Both creators are based in the UK and have been called the originators of the look that's centred on a highlighted under-eye and seamless blending. I invited both of them onto the pod and I'm happy to say that Uche said yes and our ensuing conversation felt so refreshing and real. At no point did Uche take credit for anything; in fact she paid homage to the makeup artists of the '90s, to drag makeup techniques, makeup artists such as Makeup By Mario and Melachild herself and also commented that American women like makeup artist King Mali Magic are the ones who have long been influencing the trends. Also in this episode, I speak with Funmi Monet, a Dallas, Texas-based creator and therapist, about why she thinks American women are falling in love with UK Black Girl makeup and there are also some clips from the inimitable Melachild and I share UK makeup artist @v A note: When I commented on social media that I was putting the episode together and that Uche was part of it, someone sent a screenshot of a 'post and delete' that the UK version of The Shade Room had shared (The Shade Room is like the online black version of a gossip magazine you might find in a supermarket - I think that's the best way I can describe it). In it Uche had commented that the 'clean girl look is low key anti-black' and said black women need 'coverage and structure'. As she deleted it, I'm guessing she realised it was a bit off, because when we spoke, she was very detailed about why black women might prefer fuller coverage for reasons such as hyperpigmentation. I'm mentioning it here in case any listeners thought I wasn't aware. I'm definitely aware but I feel what Uche has to say in this episode has more importance than what she posted. I’ll ask you a question which I asked myself not long ago when presented with the problems many black youth face; if you want to get your house tidy, do you tidy the house or do you first stop allowing people to tread dirt through your home? I ask this because for any community you have the internal and external stressors of that community. For example, for the black community, internal stressors may be: 9 times the rate of interaction with the judicial system in comparison to white youth Black children are 6 times more likely to be excluded in the UK Black earning power is 7% less in the black African community This means more black people in prison, less with an education and less earning power. Every single one of these factors doesn’t just slow the rate in which black people can climb the socio-economic ladder. It may in fact mean that we fall further and further behind. This is partly due to wealth compounding, ie wealth has the potential to grow faster and faster. The issue is that if you aren’t able to keep up, you’ll be left behind. This may be partly why the black community, despite being one of the first immigrant groups to the UK in modern history, is still one of the bottom 3 earning ethnic groups in Britain and the US, too. These are problems we have to address, and do address, every day. Every black person I met growing up was told “you have to work twice as hard to get just as far”. However let’s look at external barriers to our progression For some reason black youth are sentenced to longer prison sentences for the same crime and are up to 12 times more likely to be stopped and searched Black children in the US are more likely to be disciplined for the same behaviour. This is suspected by many to me the same in the UK, too Black people are paid 17% less for the same standard of education “teachers “increased the severity of suggested disciplinary actions when the race of the teachers didn’t match that of the child.” Teacher Bias, Elephant in the Room So we can see here how our community is experiencing disadvantage which is probably predisposed from a combination of what is within and outside of our control. So what do we focus on first? Myself and K from 1 Step Away From discuss barriers to our youth progressing. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/elliottreid/message

Episode 3
When Jamaine Facey and Patrick Hutchinson and two friends attended a Black Lives Matter protest in London in June, hadn't intended to get involved in any skirmishes. But that's what happened when they worked together to save a far right protestor from further injury. Their heroic actions culminating in an iconic viral photograph of the man they helped being carried to safety over Patrick's shoulder. Since then there have been newspaper front pages, TV interviews, a chat to civil rights activist the Rev Al Sharpton, an interview with Prince Harry on zoom, and perhaps most importantly a charity called 'United to Change and Inspire' set up to fight racial inequality in Britain. Jamaine and Patrick tell their story to Kathryn.

She's been in the game for about roughly 11 years but even with a few acting & presenting roles on a few UK shows, London Hughes has never really had her moment under the spotlight until now! This December Hughes will have her first comedy special 'To Catch A D*ck' on Netflix. The special is executive produced by Kevin Hart and his Hartbeat Production company with more productions in discussion. Hughes also has her first feature film in the works 'Hot Mess' which will be made with Girls Trip filmmaker Will Packer. Following the trend of UK Black stars having to find success in America, we spoke to Hughes about her journey and why it's taken so long for her talents to be fully recognised ... To Catch A D*ck airs on Netflix December 22nd. Watch the trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mcCgipDB84 (here).

#SexWithTopher Episode 5 begins with an explanation of what I am doing as a white person, to support the BLACK LIVES MATTER movement in response to systematic racism and police brutality — alongside its relevance in the context of LGBT+ Pride Month (June). My fabulous guest this episode is an iconic Ru Paul's Drag Race UK queen, Divina De Campo. Divina and I discuss Section 28, Sex (of course), Ru Paul's Drag Race, Gender Identity, Sexual Fluidity, and meeting met her nightclub-owner-husband, and how she got into DRAG. Also, broken sex toys.
