In this conversation, Anikó Imre and James Mark – co-editors, with Catherine Baker and Bogdan Iacob, of the new volume Off White. Central and Eastern Europe and the Global History of Race – present the ambiguities of East Europeans' whiteness and the major implications such ambiguities have had; analyze how the “two halves of Europe” compare when it comes to questions of white supremacy; explicate what their historical approach to nation building in Eastern Europe has yielded; discuss the place and role of East Europeans in global rightist networks today; and reflect on how they see their own role as mediators between political cultures and different scholarly traditions. Anikó Imre is a Professor of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California. James Mark is a Professor of History at the University of Exeter. Off White. Central and Eastern Europe and the Global History of Race has been edited by Catherine Baker, Bogdan Iacob, Anikó Imre, and James Mark. It is published by Manchester University Press.
On this episode, we were joined by author Percival Everett — Booker Prize finalist and poet of “pathological irony,” — to discuss his landmark new book, James, a retelling of Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the point of view of Jim. Following the retirement of his longtime editor in 2021, this novel casts Everett into the centre of the literary ‘moment' with the book climbing the UK's bestseller lists despite it sacrificing none of the madcap invention or gallows humour that has cemented his cult reputation. It also comes in the wake of his 2001 novel, Erasure, being adapted into the Oscar-winning film, American Fiction, itself a satire of a writer entering the literary mainstream. Percival spoke to us about why his book is neither homage nor take down of Twain's iconic novel; why ‘distractions' like fishing and tennis are essential to his process; and finally, that thorny American issue — in his view the only American issue — addressing the legacy of slavery. Episode 166 of The Adventure Podcast features ultra-endurance cyclist, James Mark Hayden. James started by riding fixie bikes around London, before finding deep purpose in athleticism and training. He shifted his focus from road racing to unsupported ultra-endurance racing, and after two failed attempts, won back-to back wins in The Transcontinental Race. Pushing his limits again, he now focuses on off-road ultra-endurance racing, and events like the Silk Road Mountain Race in Kyrgyzstan. What makes this episode stand out is the more nuanced conversations Matt and James have around subjects like the transition to fatherhood, mental health, autism, personal ethics and living a life on your own terms. It's moving and motivating, and one of our favourite episodes of the year.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-adventure-podcast. Hosted on Acast. A Sunday morning sermon by Pastor Brett Deal. There is something special about spending time with the Apostle John. The more time we spend reading his letter to the church of Ephesus and remembering his years of discipleship walking and talking with Jesus, the more one word stands out clearly: love. John is the beloved disciple in the Gospel. His beloved-ness in Jesus transforms how he sees himself and how he relates to others. The more we read his letters, we see he was often very black and white in his thinking. He uses contrasting themes like love and hate, darkness and light, sin and salvation with little gray area. We would expect nothing less from someone nicknamed a son of thunder with his brother James (Mark 3.17). Years of manual labor at sea fishing probably left his heart as calloused as his hands and feet. It is amazing then to see how John's time with Jesus transformed the way he saw those around him. He still saw things in black and white; he understood a clear contrast between right and wrong, injustice and justice, sinful darkness and the luminance of redemption. But the more time he spent with Jesus, the more love flowed into those hard-won callouses from pulling harsh nets heavy with thrashing fish. The longer John walked with Jesus, talked with Jesus, lived each day centered around Jesus, the more one theme resonated above all others: love. For John, “God is love.” God is love, and the most visible testimony to God's love is Jesus' presence among us. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, yes, we are new creation, but we are also commissioned to pour that abundance of love into the lives of others. In 1 John 4.7-21 John is not pushing us to judge one another to see if we are genuine and authentic Christians. He simply states that if God is love and we are in Christ we should love one another. This is how we demonstrate our life in Jesus, that we love others the very way He loves all men, women and children. How is the Holy Spirit captivating us in God's love to step out and love others?
Those suffering with foregut diseases can often find a long-term cure through surgery. James Mark Harris, MD, is a general surgeon in the MUSC Health Floyd Medical Group and has extensive experience in foregut surgery. In this episode, he talks about the often complex foregut procedures he offers and how they can change the lives of his patients with diseases such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, chronic heartburn, and severe acid reflux.
The Covid-19 pandemic has forced governments across the world to rethink (free) movement of peoples and things, and to revise mobility regimes in the face of new constraints. This is not a new phenomenon, argues Steffi Marung (University of Leipzig) in this episode of the Transformative Podcast. To a certain extent, each moment of major socio-economic or political transformation in the 20th century has been also characterised by a change in our understanding of, and attitudes towards, mobility. In conversation with Anna Calori (RECET), Dr. Marung reflects on how we can better understand historical transformations and caesuras by looking at mobilities. Dr. Steffi Marung is director of the Global and European Studies Institute of Leipzig University. Currently, her research addresses socialist mobilities of activists and experts from Eastern Europe and the Global South during the 20th century, while she works on a book project investigating Soviet African Studies during the Cold War. Together with James Mark and Artemy Kalinovsky, she has co-authored and co-edited the volume Alternative Globalizations: Encounters between the Eastern Bloc and the Postcolonial World (Indiana University Press, 2020).
Socialism Goes Global: The Soviet Union and Eastern Europe in the Age of Decolonisation (Oxford UP, 2022) is the first work to provide a broad history of the relationship between Eastern Europe and the decolonising world. It ranges from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth century, but at its core is the dynamic of the post-1945 period, when socialism's importance as a globalising force accelerated and drew together what contemporaries called the 'Second' and 'Third Worlds'. At the centre of this history is the encounter between the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe on one hand, and a wider world casting off European empires or struggling against western imperialism on the other. The origins of these connections are traced back to new forms of internationalism enabled by the Russian Revolution; the interplay between the first 'decolonisation' of the twentieth century in Eastern Europe and rising anti-colonial movements; and the global rise of fascism, which created new connections between East and South. The heart of the study, however, lies in the Cold War, when these contacts and relationships dramatically intensified. A common embrace of socialist modernisation and anti-imperial culture opened up possibilities for a new and meaningful exchange between the peripheries of Eastern Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Such linkages are examined across many different fields - from health to archaeology, economic development to the arts - and through many people - from students to experts to labour migrants - who all helped to shape a different form and meaning of globalisation. Jill Massino is a scholar of modern Eastern Europe with a focus on Romania, gender, and everyday life. Learn more about your ad choices. The Bible is the Holy Spirit-breathed truth of heaven. Jesus is the Living Word of God, and while He walked this earth, He loved the written Word. He knew, quoted it, and let the Scriptures speak. As His followers, we need to know, love, and follow what the Bible says.
In this conversation with RevDem editor Ferenc Laczó, three authors of the new collective monograph Socialism Goes Global. The Soviet Union and Eastern Europe in the Age of Decolonisation, Péter Apor, James Mark, and Steffi Marung, dissect the relationship between eastern Europe and the extra-European world in the age of decolonization; explain how key East European traditions of relating to the extra-European world have evolved over time; analyse the extent to which long-standing civilizational and racial hierarchies were overcome, or perhaps reproduced, via East–South connections during the Cold War; show how the study of this alternative form of globalization can help us reconsider the end of European state socialism; and discuss some of the key contemporary consequences and legacies of socialist world-making today. James Mark is a Professor of History at the University of Exeter Steffi Marung is the Director of the Global and European Studies Institute of Leipzig University Péter Apor is a senior research fellow (tudományos főmunkatárs) in contemporary history at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Socialism Goes Global. The Soviet Union and Eastern Europe in the Age of Decolonisation, coordinated by James Mark and Paul Betts, is published by Oxford University Press. Its main contributors are – next to Péter Apor, Paul Betts, James Mark, and Steffi Marung – Alena Alamgir, Eric Burton, Bogdan Iacob, and Radina Vučetić.

The collapse of the Berlin Wall has come to represent the entry of an isolated region onto the global stage. On the contrary, this study argues that communist states had in fact long been shapers of an interconnecting world, with '1989' instead marking a choice by local elites about the form that globalisation should take. Published to coincide with the thirtieth anniversary of the 1989 revolutions, 1989: A Global History of Eastern Europe (Cambridge UP, 2019) draws on material from local archives to international institutions to explore the place of Eastern Europe in the emergence, since the 1970s, of a new world order that combined neoliberal economics and liberal democracy with increasingly bordered civilisational, racial and religious identities. An original and wide-ranging history, it explores the importance of the region's links to the West, East Asia, Africa, and Latin America in this global transformation, reclaiming the era's other visions such as socialist democracy or authoritarian modernisation which had been lost in triumphalist histories of market liberalism. Jill Massino is a scholar of modern Eastern Europe with a focus on Romania, gender, and everyday life.
