So let's have some fun this week here on Plan with the Tax Man.   Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast. It is Thanksgiving week that we are putting this one out. So maybe you're catching it before or after Thanksgiving. Hopefully you had a good holiday. And we're going to talk about what Thanksgiving traditions, how they might mirror smart financial planning. Have a little bit of fun here with Tony Mauro, who is the Des Moines professional alternative. And at Tax Doctor Inc., he is the tax man. So we're going to have that conversation, my friend. What is going on? How are you doing?   Tony Mauro: I'm doing great. Getting ready for Thanksgiving. One of my favorite holidays of the year.   Speaker 1: You and me both.   Tony Mauro: Yeah. The staff's getting excited too. They get a little time off around Christmas, so it's all good.   Speaker 1: Yeah. Favorite dish?   Tony Mauro: At Thanksgiving, I'm still a traditional turkey guy, but my favorite at Thanksgiving is probably the pumpkin pie with a lot of whipped cream.   Speaker 1: Okay. All right.   Tony Mauro: How about you?   Speaker 1: Mashed potatoes. My wife's mashed potatoes are killer.   Tony Mauro: Oh yeah.   Speaker 1: They're killer. That's probably why I have heart problems, but they're good. Well, let's have some fun. We'll talk about these traditions. We'll kind go through the day. We'll kind of run through the day a little bit and see if you can spin a financial yarn to some of these items.   So I don't know about at your house, Tony, but she starts working on all the stuff in the morning. It's her and my daughter have this tradition of doing all these things together, even though the kid's in her late 20s now, they really enjoy kind of working through the process together. That's a tradition in and of itself. But she has to have the Macy's Parade on in the background as they're prepping and whatnot. So what kind of analogy can we make to the prepping of the parade and the financial prepping and planning?   Tony Mauro: Well, the parade, I used to watch it, I haven't watched it in several years, but it always does come off, just like every other giant event, as fairly flawless and looks like it's effortless. Just like I always use the golf analogies. Those guys make it look so easy. But what everybody doesn't see is everything that goes into the setup and the organization of that parade.   And really, no different in your financial life, whether it's your retirement plan or any other plan that you have that you're saving for. You do have to do some work behind the scenes. You've got to get your plan in place. You've got to understand what's going on, have communication with your advisor, and really monitor that plan in order for it to later, on when you're out bragging to your friends that, hey, I'm retiring at this age, or whatever, and telling them you're going to do all these fun things, to them it looks like, boy, somehow you made it so easy, but they don't understand the things that go into it. But you do need to do that with your financial plan.   Speaker 1: That's a good way of thinking about that, right? The choreography, if you will, of the planning and of the parade as well as your retirement is pretty important. So, all right, so you're watching the parade, you got that going on, you start cooking the feast. So when it comes to obviously getting the turkey in, timing's got to matter here.   Tony Mauro: Got to matter. I'm not a good cook, so I would probably be burning it. So I leave that to my wife. But I know that there's been several years that in the past, actually, it used to be my mom, she would put it in too late or cook it too long and it would burn. So the whole thing was kind of ruined. And so in your planning life, I never think it's too late to start, but obviously the sooner you start, you don't have to rush or you don't have to feel as much pain of saving because you're starting on time, you're doing it for a long time. And just like cooking the turkey, you want to make sure you're monitoring it while it's in the oven, or in this case, while your money is being invested. So that, again, just like I said before, at the end of the day, your plan is going to look like and feel like a real success.   Speaker 1: Yeah. You don't want to rush it, especially if you're doing that deep fried thing. Because I guess that's where they explode is when it's still somewhat frozen and you drop it in there, and I guess that's when the problem happens. So timing is important.   Tony Mauro: Timing is an issue. Yes.   Speaker 1: In both things, right? For sure. All right. Well, the turkeys cooking, stuff's being made, and you're probably part of the family is probably watching some football games going back and forth. So this one should be a pretty easy one for you here, Tony, to give us an analogy. But my beloved Lions, I am a long suffering Lions fan. Yes, we've got a good team last couple of years, but they still seem to lose on Thanksgiving Day. So that's a tradition I could get rid of. But anyway, what do you got?   Tony Mauro: Well, I think with the football games, I mean, we're all sitting there watching them in some form or fashion. Obviously, we see both the offense and the defense on the field at different times. It's really just very similar to your financial plan. I mean, sometimes you're playing offense, and that's the proactive, what I call saving and monitoring for the future and saving for those goals. But you also need to, and this is where I think a lot of people miss, they don't play defense enough in their financial lives.   In other words, they don't carry the proper insurance, they don't watch that enough. And I'm not just talking life and disability and things. I'm talking about home, auto, things like that, that they do need to protect the assets they have. So I kind of equate that to a little bit of a defense because you have to spend money on that stuff. It's not sexy at all. You don't like it. You only get a return is if something bad happens. And so a lot of people put that off. But I do think both of those are important, just like they are in football.   Speaker 1: Yeah, great analogy for sure. And sometimes, yeah, my Lions do not play defense enough or not well enough. And any of the guys who are listening, I'm sorry, but you know it's true. So we got a great offense right now, but sometimes the defense is a little suspect. So that's a great analogy. All right. Food's done, ready to get rocking and rolling. Got to cut that turkey, man. Got to slice that joker up. What are we doing from a retirement analogy?   Tony Mauro: Well, I think it's similar to the turkey is we all have different plans. We all have different needs and wants, very similar to the size of the turkey. So when we're talking about distributions and getting income from what we have saved, it's important to be strategic about what we're doing and how we're divvying that up. Because obviously in retirement planning, it's how long is it going to last? If you're cutting the turkey, it's like, okay, there's an end because somebody's going to eat the last bite. But in retirement, hopefully we're not taking the last bite because then that means we're out of money and that's the last thing we want to have happen.   Speaker 1: We don't want to do that, right?   Tony Mauro: No.   Speaker 1: So yeah, so you want to be strategic about how you slice up your retirement income so you can plan it out, stretch it out. Because we want to have that longevity piece covered as well. Even if you don't think longevity is on your side, you still want to plan for it in case you're wrong. So family table conversations, that'll be next. So everybody's sitting there to eat. You've cut up the turkey, you're chowing down. Lots of conversations happen over Thanksgiving and sometimes they're not always super comfortable. Hopefully everyone's keeping the political stuff at bay the last couple of years. But what's that financial correlation?   Tony Mauro: Well, I think the financial correlation, and I think you're right, I mean, I've been in a few of those awkward conversations over the years at Thanksgiving, which is very uncomfortable. It used to happen at my wife's mom and dad's house. It's very similar, because at least with us as advisors, we want to take some time to talk about some uncomfortable things that people don't like to talk about, which is the end, the death, the planning after you're gone, what's that going to look like? And it's uncomfortable, but if we can take that and maybe make it less uncomfortable and get people to talk about that, generally they feel better afterwards, that they've got that part of life handled and they can enjoy the rest of their lives knowing that that's in place.   Speaker 1: Yeah. The family's together. My mom was kind of funny, I think it was last year or the year before. She's like, I'm in my 80s, I'm going to die in a few years. What are we doing? She just kind of dropped it out blunt like that.   Tony Mauro: Yeah, that's one way to do it.   Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. So have those chats.   Tony Mauro: [inaudible 00:08:37].   Speaker 1: But she kind of made it silly a little bit, which took the edge off. But you got to have those conversations talking about money, legacy, all that good stuff while everybody's together. The future versions of your family will thank you for that. All right. Leftovers, Tony. Time to start putting stuff away. Some people might say this, the best part of it is having leftovers.   Tony Mauro: It's my favorite for sure. I think in the financial realm, really the leftovers for me really are living within your means. In other words, creating a budget and sticking to it as best you can. And then of course my favorite tax strategies, because a lot of people don't think about these things, and these little leftovers can add up to a lot of dollars over years. If you could live within your means, save the excess, and use that excess to invest strategically the best you can tax wise, you're really going to be able to add a lot of extra dollars to your end game, which is your retirement income.   Speaker 1: Yeah, you got to stretch it. And that's where maybe there's tax strategies. We often talk about with you being the tax man and all, I mean there's all those other facets to just the retirement versus just the income, which we were talking about before, is you want have all those good pieces in place. And I know sometimes we often talk about the budgeting word, and people hate that word in retirement. They think they're going to have to live on a strict plan. But that's not really what you're talking about. I mean, it's really just making sure you got everything kind of checked, the boxes checked, so that you've got plenty of leftovers for the next 30 years.   Tony Mauro: That's right. And yeah, my clients don't like that budgeting term either. And it's really not. I try not to phrase it like that, but I like to say living within your means. Knowing what you have coming in, what you have going out, and making smart decisions that way. Because if you can do that, that's a lot of the battle right there.   Speaker 1: Yeah. We'll call it a spending plan, right?   Tony Mauro: Spending plan is a good one. Yeah.   Speaker 1: Yeah. That way you can just do that and then say that and that makes you feel better. All right. Now, somewhere along the way from me growing up, it seemed like the oldest person in the house was the first person responsible for the post meal nap.   Tony Mauro: Oh yeah. I think that still happens.   Speaker 1: Yeah. Now a lot of people fall asleep for sure, but I feel like it seemed like it was always the oldest person in the room that was the first one to kind of kick off. But you've earned it. And I mean, look, this is pretty easy. This is what retirement is. It's the post meal relaxing time after the Thanksgiving feast.   Tony Mauro: It is. And it's the reward for hopefully your preparation and saving for all these years. And hopefully you've got enough health to be able to get out and enjoy it. And those that don't, enjoy what you can because, in the end, we will all have an end. And so it is your reward, and hopefully you can take it easy and do what you want, which is, in my opinion, the whole reason why we are trying to help you with financial planning in the first place is that.   Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, right? Whether it's your portfolio or Tony's favorite pumpkin pie, everything turns out better when you plan ahead, share wisely, and savor those results. I'm sorry, I, I try to provide enough information, but, uh, I, I could have probably shortened it, but maybe it's because I'm a pastor. I just like to embellish and go on for a long, long period of time. So we're gonna fill in the blanks here and throughout our time together, and I can't wait to hear some good jokes. We will. We'll see what comes up. I'm an improviser, so nothing's ever planned. So if there's a moment of funny, yeah, I just give God the credit and if there's not, it's just, I don't know. We'll see. So tell us about your childhood. Were you always funny or into comedy? I really [00:03:00] was, uh, one of the earliest pictures of me other than, you know, baby pictures, uh, was a old Polaroid of, uh, me flexing, like I was in a bodybuilding contest because we we're at the city pool. There was an actual, like a swimsuit or bodybuilding competition going on on the other side. And my parents and their friends were just there at the pool and I was like, no, they're not gonna get the attention. I'm gonna get the attention. So there's this picture of me flexing my little chubby 2-year-old arms and it was like, I, I love to entertain and I love the attention and trying to, uh, get people an opportunity to laugh. So yeah, pretty much my entire life, um. Uh, I, I just liked it. I enjoyed, and I lived off of people's laughter. Now, did you experience any trauma in your life? There were, um, there wasn't any like one singular event, like a, a massive. You know, tragedy. But my dad was in Vietnam. He was in the [00:04:00] Vietnam War, and he got in contact with that chemical agent Orange that, uh, I've heard about. And, uh, that just ravaged his body. You know, when he hit 30, he was, you know, a healthy, strong 30-year-old guy working in the trades, and he was disabled by the time he was. 37, 38, um, from heart attacks, from just loss of, uh, dexterity in his hands and uh, and losing his ability to even walk. And it was all, uh, just complications and, and complications from the agent Orange. And so we were living in Chicago at that. You know, when I was first born and then when he'd had his third heart attack, we had to move out of the city and get away from the fast pace of Chicago and went down to Virginia where it's a lot slower lifestyle, a little bit easier for him to handle that kind of stress. But over the next 20 or so years as his health failed, there were a lot of conflicts in the home [00:05:00] between he and mom, between he and myself, and, um, so it was. It wasn't a tragic event, it was just this long period of watching my dad lose his ability to do the things that men do, like work with their hands, play with their son, hang out with their son, things like that. And, uh, you're not able to handle that because we really didn't have a strong faith. Base. So there was nothing kind of anchoring us in that storm. Mm-hmm. And so it was over, you know, two decades that, you know, there's just a lot of little traumas. Little fights, uh, big fights and, and things like that. We said we were Christian and we went to church. Um. Uh, fairly regularly, uh, mostly for holidays and potlucks. Uh, but um, we, uh, we said we were Christian, but it kind of [00:06:00] only existed from 11 to 12 on, on Sundays. Uh, we lived decently. We weren't out killing people. We weren't doing drugs and like that, but, um, but we weren't really like practicing. We didn't say, you know, grace at meals. We didn't pray together. We, I don't think I ever saw an either of my parents actually open a Bible. So we were kind of Christians in name only. Um, we had the, the membership card went to the meetings, but we didn't actually do a lot of practicing outside of church. So kinda like Chris and dumb. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Kind of, kind of creases with a little bit more regular attendance because the church I grew up in, uh, or at least as a kid, they had a lot of potlucks. It, it was almost like the one way to guarantee people would come. It was like, yeah, we're gonna have a potluck to celebrate this this weekend. And I love the potlucks because there's always at least five to sometimes six, uh, different varieties of mac and cheese, and that's my favorite. Favorite. Yes. [00:07:00] Yes. Mac and cheese. Yes. Mashed potatoes. Mm-hmm. Mashed potatoes, uh, all sorts of desserts. And, uh, for your, your listeners, they won't know this, but if they see, you know, my headshot or whatnot, I, I'm not a small individual and I will put the blame firmly on that church. Where all the potlucks, oh, they fed me, but not spiritually. Oh. That's funny. So when did you meet the Lord for real? Well, my story's kind of unique or maybe it's not. Um, but for me it depends on what your personal theology is to interpret it. I. Going into my sixth grade year, uh, that, that summer before my sixth grade year, I went to a summer camp and I, uh, went, you know, we had devotions each night at a campfire. And I remember on Thursday night, the day before, the night before we're leaving. [00:08:00] Something at the devotion spoke to me and I said, on my way by myself, said That little sinners prayer of Jesus coming to my heart. I want to make you Lord. Um, and you know, I remember the prayer, I remember walking up that gravel driveway up towards the cabin. And, but like I said, it kind of hinted at there wasn't a lot of discipleship for young believers at my church. So. It was like, oh, I accepted Christ. What does that mean? What do I do with it? And so from that year. For many years after, I never really got truly discipled to understand what it meant to be a Christ follower. And through my depression and the, you know, just some of the choices I made, I kind of walked away from that. So if you believe that you can walk away from salvation, then you could say that I walked away from it. Uh, some believe once saved, always saved. So you can either choose that summer or you can look to, uh, January, 2013 when. Uh, [00:09:00] still wrestling, depression, still looking for purpose in life. I was walking to work, uh, on a Saturday morning and. There were these two kids from a local Bible college out there looking for people to witness to, uh, they had the, uh, tract, which, uh, for anybody that doesn't know tract is a small graphic novel that, uh, kind of tells the gospel story. And, um, so they were out there and there's really no reason for them to be there 'cause it wasn't a very populated area. Um, so there really wouldn't be a lot of people out there on a Saturday morning. So it was obviously a divine appointment. They gave me the track and they offered to pray for me, but I didn't, you know, I kind of blew them off. Said, yeah, I'm a Christian, I'm saved. Yeah, I'm good, but I gotta get to work. But because they were there, they passed out the track and because of a lot of stuff that was leading up to that moment, it was like, okay, God, I'm ready to submit. I'm, I'm ready. So that night I, uh, opened up my, uh, Rick Warren, purpose Driven Life. I started reading [00:10:00] my, uh, dollar General, uh, king James version Bible got all the way through Deuteronomy before. I was like, I need something simpler. Uh, yeah. But, uh, yeah. Um, those two kids, I don't know if I'll ever see them again, at least not in this life, but they were kind of the straw that broke the camel's back to where I made the decision because I was still wrestling with depression and I was literally at this place where I was on top of, I, I described it as I was on a peak of a mountaintop where. I was still considering, you know, taking my life so I could either go left and just take my life and, and end it once and for all, or I could go right and give my life and fully submit to God. And that was kind of the moment that kind of clenched it for me to take that step towards God and really for the first time, pursue a relationship with him. So that was in, uh, January of, uh, 2013. So let's unpack the. Part where you talked about you wanted to end [00:11:00] your life. What happened there? It was a, a culmination of a lot of things. I, I had a lot of dreams and ideals of what life should look like, and this started in, uh, junior high and high school. Um, and then, uh, you know, combine that with, uh, this struggle with my relationship with my dad. Um, you know, not ever quite being good enough because he always had, sometimes these. Surreal expectations and, and when I didn't meet them, I felt like a failure and, you know, just all these different things. Um, it just added up to one night. I remember, um, I was pursuing this, this young lady to date her in high school and you know, for the first time I was like, this might be the one that I actually get her to date me. And then, um. Afternoon, after I talked to her in the morning, I saw her walking, holding hands with somebody else, and that was. [00:12:00] Kind of the straw that broke the camel's back the other way, uh, to where I entered into that depression. And, uh, it just kept getting deeper. The more my dad and I fought, the more my mom and dad fought. You know, it just got deeper and through, um, my junior year, senior year high school, all through college, after college for many years, uh, through my first marriage, you know, just. That voice was always in the back of my head, you're not worthy. Um, no one's gonna truly love you. Um, might as well end the pain now. And so I just, I really wrestled with the idea of suicide. There were times that I was ready to do it, but I cursed myself for being too weak or too afraid to commit. But looking back, it was that, as the Bible calls it, the still small voice. That was, you know, just kind of coaxing me to don't give in just yet. Don't give in just yet. So looking back, obviously God was [00:13:00] there with me the entire time. It's just I didn't realize who that voice was or why I was not able to fully take that next step. It was because God was there trying to yank and pull me back from the edge. Wow. I'm sure a lot of our listeners can relate to, um, the things that you're saying right now about wanting to end it all. Now, did you cover up your depression, your feelings? Did anybody else know about that? I covered it. Um, as I mentioned, I love to entertain people, make people laugh. So it started off very, when I was very young. It was just this pure thing of enjoying the laughter and enjoying giving that gift to people. But when I entered the Depression, it became a defense mechanism where I would keep people from seeing what I was feeling and also try to prevent them from feeling the darkness I felt. If I could do that, if I could make somebody laugh, if I could [00:14:00] entertain somebody, if I could make somebody feel better, then I was able to justify living for the next week or the next day or what have you. And so comedy or making people laugh was where I found my worth and my value. And if I went too far and I offended somebody, if I hurt somebody's feelings, uh, or if I said something that just kind of embarrassed me. It went into the spiral where it was like, see, even the one thing you count on for value you fail at. And so it would spiral me and it was like, man, I just, I need to drive my truck off this cliff, or I need to, um, do this or that other thing to myself just, and I always wanted to leave it as an ac, you know, make it look like it was an accident. Um, whenever I really contemplated, uh, suicide because I didn't want the embarrassment. I didn't want people to judge me and say things about me, and I also didn't want the judgment to follow my [00:15:00] parents or anybody else because I didn't want them to be punished for what I was going through. So I always tried to make it or plan out to look like an accident. Um, one night I in particular, I remember driving home late at night through the mountain roads. It was maybe three or four in the morning, and I just was at this breaking point and I prayed. I said, God, if you don't want me to do this, gimme a sign. Do something. And if you think about Pure Flix movies or a Hallmark movie, you know, you think in that moment, all of a sudden the sky opens and the lights shines, and the angels come down. And, but in that moment, it felt like it got darker. It almost, it felt like, like God actually got quieter. Than, than I felt he had been. And so I got mad and I got angry at God. And I, I think I probably said a few curse words at him and, and said, you know, whatever. And I got mad and I drove [00:16:00] home. But here's the, the thing about it, I drove home. I didn't drive to the left off that cliff and. I, I say that that was a moment where God knew what I needed. It's not conventional, it's not what you would expect, but it's what I needed. 'cause he knew I'd go mad or I would get mad, and he knew that he would have to take some barbs from me in that anger. But it was God laying himself down for me in that moment so that I would go home instead of, you know, take my life. And that's just another thing that I look back on and say, wow, God was there this whole time. Wow. I've never contemplated suicide myself. I've had some really dark times with my, abuse history. Mm-hmm. Now I've had depression before. Mm-hmm. But it wasn't so much that I needed to take medication. Um, it was just this cloud of darkness and like [00:17:00] sitting in a pit. Yeah. That you can't get out of and it's no amount of positive thinking is going to do it. Right. It just took a long time to crawl out of that. These brilliant people, you know, we're talking about comedy and the most brilliant comedian was Robin Williams. Sure. And he was so funny. And, yeah. When he took his own life after battling depression, um, I really mourned his death. 'cause Yeah. Yeah. It, and that's one of the things where it shows that fame, fortune, having everything at, at your fingertips, it's not a substitute for. Anything because you look at Rob Williams, you think about even, you know, they don't classify necessarily as a suicide. You look, but you look at somebody like Chris Farley, uh, John Belushi, um, the lifestyle that those two guys [00:18:00] chose and the way that they treated their bodies was kind of a long term suicide because they did not take care of their bodies. And I'm not talking about being heavy. I'm talking about the drugs, the drinking, the things like the partying. For hours upon hours on end, it was they were trying to fill something in their soul that they couldn't fill. Um, so for, and I don't say these things as judgment. Mm-hmm. I say these things as warnings. Um, heads up. If you see somebody that is trying to fill their life with partying, find the time when they're sober and talk to them. See if there's something going on. Uh, and like you look at somebody like Robin Williams. It's a very hard thing to know how to handle that because you don't know what his family life was like. Did he have somebody in his, in his corner that knew what he is wrestling with and they were just happened to be gone in an, in the instant that he was the weakest? Um, [00:19:00] for me, I think one of the, the biggest things is if you see somebody or know somebody that could potentially be similar to where Robin Williams was at. Pray and ask for God to show you how to reach them, um, and be willing to pursue it. Um, it's, no, no two depressions are the same because no two people are the same. There's no blanket there, a, b, c methodology that's going to, like, if I do these three or four things, I'm gonna pull my friend out of what they're at. Because there's different triggers, there's different experiences, there's different chemical imbalances in the mind. So don't ever feel like a failure if you try to help somebody and you can't see results. Because some people, it takes time, some people it takes the miracle of God flipping a switch and healing whatever chemical imbalance is in the mind. Um, so my advice is always just keep [00:20:00] pursuing, um, because. Eventually there's gonna be a breakthrough it because somebody that's in that mode is going to see that they're not gonna give up and that's going to fly directly in the face of so many of the inner voices or, or the self-talk of, I'm not worth it, nobody's gonna really care. Or I, I'm a burden. But when you're continually pursuing, you are speaking against all that and you're giving evidence against that case. And we all know, especially, uh, as Christians, that those voices are of the enemy. So they're all mm-hmm. Of the king of lies. Yes. And when you can step in and bring the truth and bring the light, the enemy has no footing left. So that's always my advice, is just to keep pursuing him. It's worth it. It's worth being able to pursue somebody and give them [00:21:00] a chance to hope and a chance to fight against the lies of the enemy. Um, I never know what to say to somebody that's struggling with depression. I'm always afraid that I'm gonna say the wrong thing. Right. Um, so those, those suggestions are really, valuable because. I don't wanna push them too far, but I want them to know that I care. So, yeah. And, and here's the thing, and this is something that I, whenever I talk to people, I, I try to take this burden off your shoulders. It's not your job to save them. It's not your job to rescue them. It's your job to be there and let God do the saving. It is not, it's not your job. So whatever words you say, whatever things you say, it's not gonna matter because it's not gonna be really remembered. The mistakes or, or the, the bad choice words or whatever you say that doesn't [00:22:00] work, quote unquote work, it's not gonna matter. What's gonna matter is that person that you're pursuing, that you're fighting for is gonna remember that you were there. They're gonna remember your presence, not so much your words. Now, there'll be some times where God will give you wisdom and they'll remember those words of wisdom, but for the most part, part, they're gonna remember that you were there. Just like when you go to a funeral and you talk to the people that are grieving, uh, whether it's the widow or the widower, or maybe it's, uh, the child that lost their parent, whatever the case may be. They don't remember the words that you said as you go in the line. They remember your face, they remember the, the calming touch on the shoulder, on the hands. They remember that you were there and it was, it is very much the same for somebody that's in the dark pit of, of depression. If you're there constantly showing them love, willing to let them have [00:23:00] what I call verbal diarrhea and just get whatever they're wrestling without. They're gonna remember that you were there and they're gonna remember that, and it's going be that evidence to say, Satan, shut up. Amen. You're not telling the truth. This person is here. They see me as valuable enough to fight through this. So you're lies of I'm not worthy. Nobody loves me, nobody will miss me. Those are lies straight from the pit of hell, and that's where you belong. That's right. Wow. No, that's, that's really helpful comparing it to, um, a funeral. 'cause, uh, I just lost my brother December 5th and, yeah, and some people, they don't know the right things to say and, but you're right. I remember that. They cared about me. But yes. The fact that they took time to say, I'm praying for you, or let us know if there's anything we can do to help you meant a lot. So I appreciate that [00:24:00] advice for sure. Let's switch over something a little funnier. Sure. Okay. Than a funeral. Um, so speaking of Robin Williams, he was a guest on. Whose line is it anyway, and it was my favorite episode ever. And you started a Christian version of that show. Tell me more about that. Absolutely. So when I, uh, rededicated my life to the Lord in January of 2013, I knew that performing and being on stage was my calling. God was going to. Keep me in front of people, keep me entertaining people, but he's changing and he changed the reason why, instead of trying to hide how I felt and hide myself, I was now gonna use comedy as a way to reveal who he is. And I had no real opportunities, uh, in Beckley, West Virginia. Nothing against West Virginia. Uh, [00:25:00] I have a lot of friends back there. I had a lot of great experiences, but it wasn't where God wanted me. And so I was like, so God, where do I go? Do I go to Roanoke, Virginia, which is about three hours west in, uh, west in, in west in Virginia. Excuse me. And, uh, that's where my mom lived. Do I just move in with her and start over? And it was kind of like. You could, but that's not really where you belong. So I kept, like reading Rick Warren's book, I kept reading the Bible and finally in a, in a conversation, my sister, who doesn't really have a relationship with the Lord, but he used her. She said, well, if you want to, you can move up here to Chicago in, in, uh, start over here. And I said, are you sure? 'cause she was going to college at the time and I would be moving in on staying on her couch in her studio apartment. And I was like, are you sure? She's like, yeah, if, if you need. A new, you know, new start. And so six weeks later I left, uh, [00:26:00] West Virginia, everything I could pack in my truck I brought up. And I started completely over in, um, in March of 2013. And it was shortly thereafter, I started pursuing acting opportunities and opportunities to be in front of people. A couple of mo short films I got into, I realized after accepting the part, I shouldn't have done this role. Uh, this will be something that if I ever become famous, will be one of those things that they play to, to tease you when you get like a lifetime achievement award. Oh, yeah. Um, and then through Craigslist I connected with a, a, a guy, um, named Ryan McChesney. And he and I, uh, discussed, you know, doing, uh, movies together or something like that, uh, faith-based, and we said, well, we both like improv. He had gone through the second 30. Second City, Chicago Conservatory. I had, um, done a few classes at Second City, but uh, most of my acting and performing training [00:27:00] came from eight years of, uh, pro wrestling in, uh, West Virginia and Virginia. Um, so we thought, well, what if we started a faith-based improv team? There's nothing like that in Chicago. And we thought that there was almost nothing like that in the rest of the world. So, uh, we decided to start trying to cast and we, uh, brought two more people on. And my church at that time was, uh, very, uh, gracious in allow, allowing us free reign to use a building for rehearsals or anything else we wanted to do. And so we just started, uh. Creating an improv team and for anybody that's not really familiar with improv, uh, uh, Diana, as you mentioned, uh, whose line is it anyway, is kind of the same kind of improv that we do where it's, uh, game base where they'll give us a game with a scenario and certain rules within that game to follow, and the rest we make up. We make up the characters. The dialogue is completely made up. And the idea is not to try to be funny, but just to [00:28:00] try to respond in the moment because that's where the funny's gonna come from, is that just that creative mind that we have. It's going to find things that are funny in our natural reactions. And so what we do is we just create scenarios. It's basically like. A more organized way to play, pretend. Uh, we create characters, voices, points of view. And so we, and we don't do it based on the Bible because we don't want to ever. Get careless and misrepresent the Bible or say something. Oh, okay. That's fair. Uh, we don't wanna ever come across as a Christian improv team that is, uh, disrespecting the Bible. So we just do clean comedy that's accessible for all ages, whether you're five or 105. Um, we want you to be able to come and enjoy and laugh. And, um, we kind of filter it through [00:29:00] Philippians four, eight, whatever's pure and lovely and praiseworthy. If it kind of fits along that, then, uh, then we're good. Um, and we just, um. We go out and use it as a ministry tool. Uh, either we open for a speaker and use laughter as a way to tear down some walls and, and make people comfortable enough that they can hear it. Mm-hmm. Or we just do pure comedy with the love and the joy of Christ and allow our presence and the fact that Christ is coming in with us to somehow reach them on a spiritual level to where they'll either ask us, why are you guys clean? Why don't you curse? Or Why don't you do innuendo or blue? Right. Or they track us down on social media and they're like, oh, they're Christian, and they're funny and they're creative. Maybe God is more than I thought he was. I'm not naturally funny. Um, my husband is, and that's the, the thing [00:30:00] is. You don't have to be funny to be good at improv, you just have to be willing to listen and respond naturally. 'cause most of what's funny in our improv at least, is that people recognize either weird quirks, uh, about themselves or about people that they know or they recognize weird characters that they're like, that's Samantha from work. Oh my gosh. Um, and, and it's that recognition of, of the human experience because. We are so much alike. There we're, we are all more alike than we are different. Mm-hmm. And when we share those experiences, we realize that we're not alone. That we're not this weird thing in the middle of the world that has no connection. When we get a room with people laughing together, even if none of them know each other. They connect, uh, on this really interesting level. When they laugh together, they don't feel alone in that room. And that's why comedy is so important and effective in [00:31:00] speaking and in ministry. If you can get, get them to laugh, there's a wall that comes down to where now they're able to receive, uh, some information or receive the word or receive the message. And, uh, you know, that's what we love to do is to either. Set the ground for, uh, the speaker to bring the word, or to just simply be a light in that room to where there's a question, why, why are they different? And, um, that's what we do now. Uh, we've been, uh, this team has been running since, uh, July of 2013. Um, we've had a lot of changes, a lot of turnover, but the, the mission has always been the same is to just use comedy to bring people closer to God. So you can, definitely use comedy to heal people in their pain. And you got connected with, salt and Light Coalition. So tell us more about that. Sure. Uh, Salton Lake Coalition [00:32:00] is an organization that works with, uh, women who have survived sex trafficking. Um, many of the women that they serve, uh, were sold into trafficking by their parents at a young age. So many of them either have a very short, if. Or maybe a non-existent childhood to, uh, draw from. So they're very stunted in ma many areas as far as emotions, uh, uh, especially the ability now to trust people. And so, and most of them obviously have been hurt. Used and abused by men. Mm-hmm. So the fact that me as a guy was asked to come in and serve the weight of that is not lost on me. But I also see absolutely see benefit because here is a man in a healthy relationship with his wife, who is in a healthy relationship with the Lord, who can come in and bring that. As a model for these women to show that it is possible that [00:33:00] not every single man is a creep that's going to hurt you. Right? So, and I, I value that ability to, and that opportunity to bring that example, uh, to them. And I teach improv as a way to improve their communication because, uh, many of them, like I said, had, are stunted either, um. Educationally, either they were, they had to drop outta school because they were doing what their handlers or pimp or whatever you wanna call 'em, were making them do. And so I go and help them improve communication. Uh. Find and develop their self-esteem. Because when you're learning improv and you're creating stuff together, you're starting to realize, wait, I have a voice. I have something to say, and the things that I say can be valuable, and that only helps to improve the self-esteem. So they start realizing that all the stuff that I've been through in the past is my past and all the work that I'm doing [00:34:00] now to get back on my feet and rebuild my life. I'm worth it because I have something to say. I have something to contribute. So we do that through improv and, and at the end of the day, they get an hour where they can laugh like kids either for the first time or laugh like kids again because. And, and it, I don't say these things to brag on me. Mm-hmm. God put me in this position. There was, there's been several times where the women have, or a couple of the women have come in and you could see that they are literally carrying their world on their back. The burdens are there, the brow was furrowed. The, you could see in their eyes that they're waiting for somebody to say that one word so that they can explode on them. Mm-hmm. And part of what they have to do is they have to participate even if they're not feeling it. So they, they still get in the circle, they still participate in the games, and you can see literally. The, [00:35:00] that facade, crack and fall, you literally see them crack up and within five minutes of participating, the burden is gone. The, the fierceness in their eyes, the the anger or the frustration, or the hurt. It fades away. And they get to forget that and realize that there's hope, that there's something bigger than what they're wrestling with in that moment. And that has been such a huge blessing for me to be a part of that for the last couple of years. And, um, and like I said, it's, it's such a blessing to, to be a man in that position, to kind of be an ambassador, literally an ambassador for Christ, to show that it's okay to. To trust again. And I, and I love doing that. That is incredible. You know, I've had some training in sex trafficking, with Mending the Soul We have a program called Princess Lost. [00:36:00] Princess Found. Oh, okay. And I didn't know anything about sex trafficking before that, or at least I thought I did know. Mm-hmm. I, I thought of what the rest of the world thinks about, you know, prostitutes or sex workers, but it really, that training had opened my eyes. Do you have a story of one of those tough nuts that crack open with your comedy improv class? Yeah. Um. Specific, I can't mention names, obviously. No. Yeah. But, uh, the one lady I think of in particular, she's a single mom. She was, uh, sold by her mom into trafficking, for sex because her mom needed a. She needed a, a fix. And so she gets involved and then she gets traded, bought, and sold. Um, and the thing wa the thing that a lot of people don't realize is [00:37:00] people who are in that life, who are stuck, who are, who are trapped, they're not always stuck in some shady building off in the corner of, of the city, right? They're, they're still out walking around, they're going to the store, but. They're in such a way that they don't think they can escape and they don't know who they can trust. Mm-hmm. They don't know if the person that they're gonna talk to to say, Hey, I need help, is connected to this person that they're, that they're, uh, enslaved by. So they feel like they can't trust anybody. Even though that they're out walking around, they're, they're stuck. And they're also, many times they're forced to take drugs. Yes. So people will dismiss them when they see 'em. Like, oh, she's just a junkie. There are a lot of junkies, but there's also a lot of women and, and some men that are on drugs, either because they're trying to cope with what they're being forced to do, or it's part of what they're required to do in [00:38:00] order to survive. Um, and, and the, the, the pimps know that when they're on drugs and they're high people will dismiss them and won't really give them two looks. So all that to say is this, this young lady, she's, I think she's in her mid twenties now. Mm-hmm. Uh, single mom struggling to get her kids back because in, in the eyes of the court system, she's just a junkie. She, it, it doesn't matter why she was on drugs, it doesn't matter what caused her to be arrested for these different things. All that matters to them is that she, you know, you were high, you were on drugs, you have this in your system, you're not fit to be a mom. So she's trying to rebuild her life, trying to get her kids back and one day, I don't know, I don't know the details 'cause I don't really talk to get to know them much, just because they're trying. You don't wanna protect them. 'cause the fewer people that know the stories, know where they are, where they're [00:39:00] from, the better for them so that they can avoid getting. Found by the people that are looking for them. Mm-hmm. Because when a woman, escapes sex trafficking, that's property in the minds of the people that quote unquote own them. Yes. And they don't like to lose property because they're losing profit. So. You know, I know very little about them. I know their, I know their first name. I know a little bit about their story. Some of their stories come out as, you know, part of the improv, but she's trying to get her life back together. She comes in and she's the one that I always envision when I talk about the cracking up. She came in and I swear, I I, there was a moment where I was worried, it was like, is she gonna fly off on me if I say the wrong thing? 'cause she just looked angry at the world. Mm-hmm. And, uh, fortunately, and obviously they're not gonna leave me in the room alone, so there's a couple of the Salton light [00:40:00] volunteers there just to supervise and to coach and say, Hey, you need to go ahead and get in a circle and, and participate. You know, this is part of the program. And so. She came in, arms are crossed and she's just looking down at the ground. And so I just changed my plan and I opened up with, uh, a warmup that I knew everyone enjoyed. Um, and it's a silly game. It's called Bippity bippity bop. And, and so this game, uh, somebody's in the middle of the circle, they go around the circle and it's, it's a quick response game. I'll look at you and, and if I say Bippity bty bop, you just have to say the word bop before I get to bop. And then there's other layers to that game. So I start the game and say, all right, so we're gonna warm up with bip bippity bop. So I go around the circle and there are a couple times where like, as I'm going around the circle, I look at her like, I'm gonna give her the, you know, [00:41:00] the, the, uh, interaction. But then I go past and then I come back, and then I get her the first time it's like pip bop. She, you know, obviously wasn't ready 'cause she's not. Fully into it. So she goes, all right, un crosses her arms, walks in the circle, starts doing it, and as soon as she starts participating you, that's when it starts cracking up. And she starts laughing and, and having fun. And she became, she was two people. The first five minutes, she was one person. And then once she started to laugh, she was a completely different person. And it's like. God, this is why, this is why I'm here. And again, it's not, Hey, Dave Ebert's wonderful. You know, toot the horns. It's like, God put me in this position to use my testimony, my story to, and my experiences to try to help in the healing process of, of some women that desperately need healing and desperately need to know the love of [00:42:00] Jesus. I love that story. You know, the biggest thing I learned in, in my training that I went through was a lot of these women are in this predicament. At no fault of their own, they were mm-hmm. They were groomed or they were kidnapped, or they were, you know, trafficked by somebody that they trusted. Mm-hmm. Or they should have been able to trust and that these, these ladies and some gentlemen, by the way, are people. Valuable people, loved by God. They're not trash and not somebody that we throw away or toss aside, they are, they are children of God and they need Jesus too. Yeah. And, and these are all people that, and I, I don't like think, or in my heart, I don't believe that Jesus means this. In his language, but he's talking to us in our language when he talks about the least of these. Mm-hmm. Because he loves us and [00:43:00] God loves us equally. And there is no true least in God's kingdom. But I think it's, it's Jesus dumbing down the language so that we would understand. And that's why he is like what you do to the least of these you do to me. So yeah, there are people who. Are out there who are high on their own accord, doing their own thing, that are just throwing their lives away because they think it's fun. But you don't know until you know. So don't, I would just ask, never dismiss somebody because they look like a junkie. Mm-hmm. Or they look like they've made some bad choices. 'cause maybe they have, or maybe they're stuck in a situation. And I would always encourage, if nothing else, pray for them. Mm-hmm. And maybe in that prayer time, God's like, Hey, that that's somebody that needs you. But if you're willing to just dismiss everybody 'cause they look like they're scarred from injections or they, their face is broken out from different [00:44:00] things, if you just dismiss 'em automatically, then you're blocking God from reaching you to tell you, hey, they need your help, and God's just gonna have to find somebody else. And you're gonna miss the blessed opportunity to reach somebody that needs the love of Christ. Amen. What are you up to now? You have any new projects in the works coming down the pike? When you said, what are you up to now? I was gonna say six foot two. Um, yeah. Right now, uh, because of, uh, the global thing that's going on and I'm in Illinois, so. Theaters aren't open. We're not doing much as far as the comedy. Um, you know, so everybody's kind of focusing on their family. One of the things I have been doing is connecting with other Christian improvisers and, uh, we're, uh, doing. Semi, uh, maybe once a month. Uh, comedy shows where we just get together and we've never practiced before. We've never rehearsed, but we're gonna [00:45:00] put out, uh, some shows where people can just watch online, watch us improvise and participate. Uh, those, uh, will broadcast live on my Facebook page, and I'll advertise those that you know about a week in advance once we get people able to commit to a date. Um. And the, our first one that we did, we had somebody from West Virginia, somebody from Arkansas, two people from Texas, and Oh, had one person, uh, from Ohio, I believe. So we had like a conglomerate of people from all over the, the nation coming in. Uh, we've never practiced before, but we did improv and. Improv and Christianity are so much alike because to do good improv and to be a good Christian, quote unquote good Christian, you need humility. You need to be willing to support the other person, and you need to be willing to love the other person so that they're successful. Um, so when you come into an improv stage as a Christian [00:46:00] improviser. I mean, you've got all the tools just built in. And so we go, we perform online, we're willing to support each other and it makes it really fun. Now, the way we do it, we don't have crowd, you know, reaction, but because we're together, we kind of know what's funny and we're like, okay, this is, you know, we can laugh at each other. And, uh, just really a lot of fun. It's nothing like the real improv of being on stage and no. Intimate experience, but it's a good substitute. It, it's a good gap filler until we can get past all of what's going on. Yeah. Saw your, your post on, Christian Creatives are on the same group. Yeah. And I'm gonna see if I can try and watch that. That'll be fun. This has been great. In celebration of Vegetarian Month, this dish of cannelloni filled with mushrooms, tomato, spinach, and lentils and covered with a creamy cheese sauce is divine! Serves one Ingredients 2 tbsp olive oil 1 small onion, diced 1 large portobello mushroom, chopped roughly ½ can crushed tomatoes ½ teaspoon dried thyme ½ can lentils, drained 1 cup shredded spinach 4 cannelloni pasta tubes Topping 1/3 cup crème fraiche 1/3 cup liquid stock or water 1/3 cup grated cheese Salt and pepper to season Method Heat oven to 180 C. Grease a small oven-proof dish that will fit the pasta tubes snugly. Make the filling by heating the oil in a pan and cooking onions and mushroom for 3-4 minutes until softened a bit. Pour in tomatoes and thyme and heat until it simmers. Add in lentils and spinach and cook, covered, until the spinach is wilted. Remove from the heat. Take each pasta tube and stamp it into the filling repeatedly until the tube fills with the filling. Fill from both ends if you like. Lay filled tubes into the prepared dish. Loosen the leftover filling with a splash or two of water and pour this in and around the cannelloni. Whisk the creme fraiche, stock, and half the cheese together. Season. Pour over the pasta. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Uncover and sprinkle remaining cheese on top and cook for a further 10-15 minutes until it's golden and bubbling and the pasta is tender. She walked up to Luke and leaned in fast and gave him a kiss. "Thank you! What was wrong?""Fuel filter, I replaced it and now it's turning over first try.""Hungry? I got up earlier than I thought so I baked banana bread."He smiled. "Absolutely, let me go wash the gas off my hands.""Here, this will make sure you come back." She broke off a piece and fed it to him. As he hummed his appreciation."You think that's all that will have me coming back? Remind me to fix the mirror in your bathroom." He leaned in and kissed her again. "That is awesome banana bread though." He grinned as he jogged into the house. He came back out to find her sitting on the hood of her car, half the slice she'd brought out was gone."Do you drink coffee?" She asked, and he nodded. "Guess I should refill this then, huh?" She chuckled. "If you hadn't taken so long to wash up you might have gotten this cup. Come on up, and I'll slice some more of this awesome bread.""Isn't this how the spider lures the fly into its web?" He chuckled."Can spiders even make banana bread? I can assure you that I'll never trap you, but as my dad used to say, 'If you want the honey, you gotta deal with the bees.' I think he meant that you have to take a chance on the bad stuff to get to the really good stuff.""Sounds like a good philosophy. I'm kind of scared though. What's the bad stuff?" He paused for a moment."Have you always been such a deep thinker?" She asked."I used to get called out by my mom for being introverted and quiet. She was always trying to get me out of my shell." He shrugged and smiled. "But quiet doesn't mean stupid.""I never thought it did." She refilled the mug with coffee and added sugar and milk, and sliced off a fresh slice for him and brought it to him."What about you Luke? Are you willing to brave the bees to get the honey?" She asked."I've only been called a coward once, by you.""I called you a chicken, not the same thing." She grinned."So; what are we doing today?" Luke just smiled and drank his coffee."Jeans, comfortable shoes for walking, and a sweatshirt. That's all you get for now. We should head out early, maybe 2:30 or 3. Is that okay with you?""Are we; becoming a 'thing'?" He asked her. The genuine innocence was so sweet."Well we've only been hanging out a few weeks, but so far so good." She smiled, and noted that she'd been smiling a lot around him. That was a good sign too.She was excited and curious. She'd gladly go where ever he wanted right now. She had a quick realization, that her little seduction of Luke was backfiring and without him even trying she was being seduced by him as well. "Do I need to bring anything? Water, snacks?" She asked pushing for a hint."No we'll stop at the store on the way." He smirked popping the last bit of bread into his mouth, washing it down with the rest of the coffee. "Oh, I have something of yours too. I'll bring it up when I come to pick you up." She gave him a questioning look. "Don't look so innocent. I turned redder than your satin top when my dad pulled your panties out of my back pocket last night."Ellie bust out laughing. "I was wondering where they'd gone to. I thought you'd pocketed them you pervert.""Oh no! I know now that when you grabbed my ass last night you stuffed them in my pocket! You were hoping I'd get caught weren't you?"Ellie had tears in her eyes she was laughing so hard. She didn't have a clue but Luke was hooked now. He had never seen her look more beautiful."No, oh my god no. I did sneak them in there, but not for that reason. I figured they'd be a nice little memento of our first date.""I thought tonight was going to be our first date?" He asked curiously."Well I couldn't wait. I invited you to dinner last night, as far as I'm concerned that was our first date." She leaned on her fist smiling at him. "How was it?"He looked at her wide-eyed, slack jawed. She leaned forward and slipped her tongue between his parted lips and they kissed deeply. "It was fun wasn't it?" She asked hoping for a little reassurance."It was fantastic." He whispered urgently and kissed her again. "I'll see you in a couple hours." He gave her another kiss then stood and left looking over his shoulder at her beaming back at him. He smiled as he headed down into the house to spend a little time knocking off schoolwork before going out for the night.He knocked on her door at 2:30 sharp. She called out for him to come in. He heard close the closet door, and she popped out of the bedroom in jeans and a black turtleneck. She held her arms out. "Is this okay?" She asked."Perfect." He smiled. They headed down to his car and once again he opened the door for her letting her settle in before he closed it. He hopped into the driver's seat and they were on their way. He drove out to the shopping center and pulled into a space at the grocery store."When you were a kid, what were the things you remember most about holiday meals. What was that one thing you couldn't wait for?" He asked, he tilted his head indicating they were going inside."This is a first, a date at the supermarket." She chuckled."Seriously. His meat? Turkey breast. And his side dish? Mashed potatoes. As a child I hated mashed potatoes, despite his evangelization of them. I too was a picky eater growing up, but I would occasionally attempt to see what he saw in his beloved spuds. Whenever I tried a bite, the texture disgusted me: a gritty gruel of salty flakes coated with the oleic pall of margarine. The flavor reminded me of stale Pringles. I checked back once every couple years, but was repulsed by them every time. I lobbied my parents for pasta or frozen tater tots or any other side I actually liked. Family dinners were often dichotomous, the same protein supplemented by two different carbs. “You are not my son,” my father would joke as he continued to put away his potato slop. “Maybe you're not my father,” I'd shoot back when he shunned the rest of the family's rice pilaf. Our starch preferences seemed irreconcilable. As I entered my teen years, my palate expanded. After I'd tried and enjoyed brussels sprouts and sushi and escargot, my hatred of one of the most basic and inoffensive of all foods seemed silly. One day at a nice restaurant, I decided to give mashed potatoes one more try. Nice.  Quinny  To do all of the things that are fantastic, four movie should do just with no budget. Hmm. So yeah, like it’s got Doctor Doom. It’s got the mole, man. It’s it’s got them all doing their powers. But like Reed, stretchy arms are like pool noodles with a with a *******. Yeah, we invented cassettes and then CD’s and then digital format music. And now we’re back to ******* records again.  Quinny  So yeah, but they just didn’t bother leaving the the records. Yeah, because they realized it was the the superior format from the start, especially if you print them in.  Dion  Yes. Gold. And if you haven’t got a troop of players in your lounge room. You know, yeah. Eventually we’ll get to there, won’t we, like? Oh, this is my 9 musicians that follow me around and. Play music to me.  Speaker  Yeah.  Quinny  Yeah. I mean, yeah. Karina and Casper both kind of make the point. It’s very jetsons.  Dion  Yeah. And that’s kind of great because that’s very familiar to the people who knew fantastic for for when they were growing up based on the cartoon, which is the the sort of.  Peta  So jetsons.  Dion  The carry over of where people would sit from the Saturday morning kind of cartoon and. You know it it it sets the tone that everyone could easily get into and I went, I’m here. I immediately know what’s going on. It has a different Marvel logo, it has a different kind of a soundtrack. It’s setting itself in a in a particular period and I was like, I’ll go with this. This is totally different to every ******* thing else. This isn’t a dark and gritty reboot. This isn’t. Anything really to do with the rest of the Marvel Universe? Yeah, kinda. Which makes me happy. And I was like, I’ll go with this. I’m immediately just going to be like, all right, what do you got?  Jill  Yeah. I think the thing that’s so immersive about it is the visual language that they’ve lent into so strongly and so thoroughly like the the set design and production. All the set pieces, the costumes, everything like that was like. Beautiful, like there was such attention to detail and there was not like a wasted moment on screen. It was so interesting that we’re talking about like, how like futuristic retro it is but. Like the. Costuming wasn’t futuristic. That was still like grounded in 60s fashion.  Speaker  Hmm yeah.  Dion  I had a really good time just watching the sets and the costumes. I was like they have actually paid a lot of detail to the costuming, not only of the signature folk, but the people around them too. Looked sharp as ****, I gotta say.  Quinny  And.  Jill  Yeah, like the the space suits and their hero suits were were still like. Grounded within like that 60s, like retro futuristic style, but had like the the strong 60s fashion elements as well in terms of like the textures of the fabrics and things that they used but the the colour theory throughout was fantastic and yeah just the the visual language that they. Used in this film was just so Cohen.  Peta  It’s a joy for. The arts, hmm.  Dion  Joy for the eyes until we get to the failure of the film.  Quinny  Wow. Jesus. OK, so, so just a reminder folks, the deal also sat through Superman and huffed.  Speaker  Go further on.  Dion  I did. I did half. He did half I wanna also. Caveat that I did see Fantastic Four, but beforehand I had.  Speaker 6  So.  Dion  To watch. Beforehand I had to win. The Avatar trailer 17 times. I don’t. I don’t know how to explain that in terms of everything else, but I had to sit through the Avatar trailer. Too many ******* times, and that may have influenced my decision. And how I enjoyed that film slightly too many times.  Jill  Anyway, yeah, it’s almost like they strapped you to that chair and made you watch them 17 times.  Dion  They kind of did. Yeah. You know, because you know, as we all know, in those kind of cinema things, the seats are gold. And if you leave one, you’re done. It’s going coming back but anyway.  Speaker 3  Yeah.  Dion  OK, enough of that. Fantastic for what? What are your first four impressions?  Quinny  I just wanna know why you’re getting ready to throw it.  Speaker 2  Hello.  Quinny  Under the bus. To you ohh.  Speaker 2  No, no.  Quinny  Like there have been a couple of times that you’ve already kind of started. Coming out of. Swinging. I wanna know why the big.  Speaker  There is.  Dion  Rubber punches out. Well, first, I mean, we all hate John Krasinski. And. No, I’m just joking. That’s. Three just threw that out there for.  Peta  Come on for John Krasinski. And he’s not like.  Jill  He can’t even defend himself.  Quinny  He’s such a nice guy. Everybody talking.  Dion  About, I’m talking about how effusively I love the costuming, the design, the aesthetic, the way that it just kind of moves the story along really, really quickly. It throws in some amazing nods and references to the historical stuff, like there’s covers of famous Fantastic Four issues thrown in very quickly. I know you’ve got.  Quinny  Oh my God, that made me so happy.  Dion  Classic villains like Mole Man and the Red Ghost. Yeah. Ish red. Red ghost off.  Speaker 3  Well, sort of.  Dion  Like all of that stuff is kind of great. Herbie is amazing. The fantastic car, which I think often gets ignored. Quinny  Yeah.  Jill  Uh-huh.  Dion  In, in a lot of, this is part of the fun about the Fantastic Four is all of the bits and pieces that Reed comes up with. That’s all kind of themed Herbie, as I said. Yeah. And he was.  Quinny  Great. OK. Does everybody know the history of why Herbie exists?  Jill  No.  Quinny  OK, this is my my favorite stupid piece of ******* history. So in the 60s, when the Fantastic Four was being turned into a cartoon, they went OK we’re going to do the Fantastic Four and the standards people of America went hang on. One of the characters is on fire.  Speaker  Tell.  Quinny  We can’t have a children’s TV show where the children want to emulate the heroes and have a character be on fire. Why not so? In the 60s cartoon of Fantastic Four. Johnny Storm is removed entirely and is replaced by Herbie. This is where Herbie came from. Wow.  Speaker  Oh. Yeah.  Quinny  So the fact that, like the fact that he’s in the movie is ******* hilarious. But his history is even better.  Jill  That’s wild.  Quinny  And I’m pretty sure he actually talked in the animated series, but yeah, and didn’t just make bleeps and.  Speaker 6  Wheels. I like the Droid vibe it was.  Dion  Didn’t. Yeah, it didn’t sound like. Yeah, it didn’t sound like a 60s frickin B.  Speaker  Yeah.  Dion  I just. I just remembered something. Thing when we get this Sue storm into the proper Marvel Universe, she’s going to have to come up against Namor, yes.  Quinny  Hmm.  Dion  And and that’s a lot of that’s a that’s a whole. Jean Grey, Wolverine, Cyclops thing going to happen right there anyway. That’s right.  Jill  That’s something we can work on.  Dion  Later. Yeah, there’s a lot of smart in that one anyway, yeah.  Speaker  Yes.  Quinny  And apparently on on the set all the time, Vanessa Kirby is like, So what? What’s going on with Namal? Pedro’s like, for ***** sake, right?  Dion  Here she knows what’s going on. She gets all the cast members.  Quinny  Mm-hmm.  Speaker 3  Yeah.  Dion  Yeah. Look, I. Had a great time with it, like, you know, really good introductions to quick introductions to characters. Everyone got a little bit of ability to show who they were as characters very rapidly. Like, you didn’t have to pay to. Much there, but I also really appreciated how much they felt like a family and they felt caring and it was showing them in a particular way, which it wasn’t like, oh, these are conflicted people. They don’t know how to, you know, where’s the drama? I mean, the drama isn’t in the family. The drama is external forces. And I think they got that really well because there was a really cool vibe to sort of be like ohh this is, this is cool kind of family like like I I would take children to watch it and be like see, this is how you’re nice to each other. You don’t have to hit each other. You know.  Quinny  Don’t set each other on fire.  Dion  Don’t set each other on fire. Try stop working so hard.  Quinny  Pete Jew talk to me.  Jill  Oh my God. Ohh feels like so long ago but it was only Friday.  Dion  Four days ago that you saw it.  Jill  Ohh my goodness, I really liked the film. I had a good time. I saw it well. I mean, all the things that I said about the costume and set design and all that stuff was just fabulous. I thought like the story pacing was good. Like they they got to the point and they, you know they executed ABC. You know, here’s what’s happening. Here’s our problem. And here’s how we overcome. It, like they did that. UM. I thought the action bats were good. But again, I’m just not getting my **** blown off. Guys. The jet film. We’re back to the **** rating scale. OK0 **** means it was ******* amazing because they blew them both off, but two **** is bad because it doesn’t mean that I didn’t like the movie.  Quinny  Back to. Rating system.  Jill  It just didn’t **** **. Way and it made me start to think that there was something wrong with me. Like am I not finding enjoyment out of these movies anymore? Like is it becoming passe? Is it like over saturation? Like what’s the issue? I think what the issue is is that too many movies. Are just safe. They’re in a safe zone. They do what they do on the box and they do no more than that.  Speaker  Hmm.  Jill  I’m not getting any like thrill, danger, excitement from these movies anymore. It feels really middle of the road and pedestrian and that’s not to say that Fantastic Four was a bad movie. It was a good movie because it did its job, but it didn’t go above and beyond. And become an exceptional film. And I just, I feel that way about Superman as well. That was not exceptional to me, and it just kind of feels like every time we go and see a big blockbuster, I come out like feeling it was it was middling level.  Speaker  Yes.  Quinny  I agree, but I want to keep Pete’s. Take on it? Sure.  Peta  I think it’s very well constructed, beautifully made. Film, I mean, we’ve talked about the production design and the look of it already, which is great. You know, we’ve talked about the the structure which is logical and probably better constructed than Superman. And and I do think it’s funny that I’ve kind of liked the exposition. Free tool here that I hated so much and electric state, same tool, different vibe. It’s it’s easy to get into and you want it to be because there are some plot points that that, that require a very high level of suspension of disbelief. Even for a comic book movie, you know, usually I I I I try to give the the Budweiser and the ********* like. A bit of a break in in certain genres, but I struggled a bit with a couple of the plot points that very much drove some parts of the story. Because it was a bit wibbly wobbly. Sciency want see? Yes. Yeah, like, don’t.  Jill  Get into the proton stream, but get into the proton stream, yeah.  Dion  Yeah, you’re Superman.  Peta  That was and, and I think the issue is I I I get I I have a tendency to get a little bit distracted if I can’t. If that suspension of disbelief gets interrupted, and I think that these particular plot points were distracting enough that even though I was enjoying the film, I still. Got kind of. Kicked out of this story a. Little bit by thinking? Yeah, but Nah.  Quinny  Are these things that need to be talked about in spoilery territory or?  Peta  Ohh, everything needs to be talked about in spoiler territory. It’s it’s just and if they weren’t plotted drivers.  Dion  OK, alright, fair enough.  Peta  It would have felt a little bit different as well, but it it did kind of feel like as well constructed and entertaining and beautiful as the film is. I kind of agree with Jill that you kind of I didn’t personally come out of the end of it going like. **** yeah. Amazing superhero film. It was just kind of like, ohh, that was like really well constructed and good looking and entertaining. And yeah, Pedro.  Quinny  I I have, I agree very much with with everything you guys have said. My biggest problem with it is that. The movie didn’t have its next gear up like all the way through it puddled along at an enjoyable kind of pace. It was doing what was needed, you know, things were kind of getting, you know, you had your action beats and stuff like that. But then when you get to your climax. It doesn’t have the next gear, it can’t shift it back a cog. And really. Go ****. Let’s go. It didn’t have that it, you know, the the climax I kind of was like and oh, OK, right. We’re done. ****. OK. Huh. And that’s. Kind of implementing of the whole film that it’s really well made as as we’ve all said, well made, well shot, lovely costumes, lovely everything.  Jill  Great performances, everybody was on their a game.  Quinny  But nothing that made me go ****. That was a moment. Like, you know, there was nothing. There was no moment like.  Speaker  Yeah.  Quinny  The thors hammer. With that, America, there was no kind of really emotional beat of.  Speaker  Yeah.  Quinny  Vision saying you know that love is just pain. You know, whatever. I can’t even remember the quote. But you know those those those really like deep seated moments that make you go ohh. That got me right in the heart.  Speaker  Hmm.  Peta  Which Thunderbolts did for me, and that, you know, I. I guess if if if you’re going to hold it up against superhero films we’ve seen this year from a.  Speaker  Hmm.  Peta  Is it a good movie?  Speaker  Hmm.  Peta  Mm-hmm. You know, well-rounded perspective, I would still put Thunderbolts ahead of this, regardless of how beautifully. Thought out the world was.  Quinny  Yeah, like there, there were lovely moments and their lovely ideas. I love the idea of the whole world pulling together to go **** we’ve got. Eight months to build something or, you know, and we’re all going to pull in this together and we’re all going to come together over something. It’s a great concept, but it just never felt like it had those that, that personal danger of what we saw in Thunderbolt and. A lot of people who are doing the, which one did you like more, Superman or or fantastic? 4. I personally thought the Superman took more risks. You know, it was weirder. It was.  Peta  Well, it was more. It was more current in in its messaging and the. The risks that it. Was taking in that messaging as well, and I think also you kind of.  Dion  Hmm.  Peta  This is a bit of an imbalance, I suppose in the rate that one escalates because you can kind of attempt to escalate the stakes to the highest possible point and the escalate them so high that the audience cannot believe. That. That jeopardy is going to come to pass in that context, which actually, which actually kind of destroys that moment, is kind of gotta be like a believable, worst case scenario that they’re facing. Not like, well, of course, they’re trying to find a way to avert that. There’s gonna be a little part of you that’s like.  Quinny  Hmm.  Peta  Ohh, they might fail, which I kind.  Speaker  Hmm.  Peta  Of felt in this.  Quinny  Yeah, yeah. Yeah, like.  Peta  Otherwise, you don’t feel the jeopardy, you know, the way that you should.  Speaker  Hmm.  Quinny  Yeah, and and I don’t know, I feel like something like Superman has has more of a an alter kind of vision behind it. Like, you know, that felt like James Gunn saying something and his whole thing about found family and his whole thing about being outsiders and, you know, he. He has a particular thumbprint that is all over that. This one I couldn’t tell you. A thumbprint it was.  Peta  Which is funny because it is tonally and structurally much more consistent.  Quinny  Absolutely.  Jill  Yeah, it’s a. Package. Yeah, it has an aesthetic and it, you know, executes that, but yeah.  Quinny  Yeah. And and like.  Jill  There’s there’s special sauce.  Quinny  Yeah. And and I don’t. Know what it is because. I was wanting to get excited. I was super wanting to get excited and it just never quite hit me. And even when big things happened, I was like.  Jill  Karina made a good point that she thought we were going to see them fail. Based on what we saw in the post credit scene of Thunderbolts and I want to make a point where I kind of wish that that scene never existed because it coloured my expectations.  Speaker  Hmm.  Jill  This film I was going in.  Quinny  Yes, I’m.  Peta  I forget what that scene.  Jill  Was ohh that’s actually it was it was there. There was like ohh we can. We’re picking up something on our radar and then they zoom into space and they see the Fantastic Four ships flying through space and that bit. Yeah. Yeah. So I had a different expectation of what I was expecting in this film. And so I’m like.  Speaker 6  It’s just.  Dion  Just a a rocket ship in the sky. Kind of, or if it is, we don’t know.  Jill  Just on the edge of my seat the whole time, thinking. Well, how are they gonna get to our earth? When are we gonna see that? When are we gonna see that? And. And I’m like, so I wasn’t in the moment with everything else that was happening because I was anticipating something else to.  Quinny  Yeah. Yeah. And and maybe that’s that, that other cog that.  Speaker  Happen.  Quinny  I was expecting. Maybe that’s the the the next thing up is that you know, they do like, fail or they do something that that then took it to a different level.  Speaker  Yeah.  Jill  That causes them to and then this is how we get to this moment. But like now that we’re not going to have The Avengers doomsday film until another 18 months.  Quinny  Jill  I’m like, wow, how are they going to get our butts in the seats for that one?  Quinny  Yeah.  Jill  Because after watching this movie, I’m like. Ah, I don’t really know where we’re going.  Quinny  Neller.  Peta  At the end, do you feel safe now with your opinion to share?  Dion  I mean, my opinion is based on Fantastic Four and how I enjoyed this movie or didn’t.  Quinny  Which is a really difficult thing to do to to take the movie entirely on its own. Yeah, been its own value and.  Speaker 2  What?  Quinny  So aside from my expectation, aside from the other movie I watched a week and a half before, yeah, aside from.  Dion  Yeah.  Quinny  All of that, yeah.  Dion  Look there. This is the thing. Like I I really like to to throw this through. I really enjoyed Thunderbolts because it broke expectations that I had. I was there for it to say, what are you gonna do with this? And I was. Like wow, that is a great movie. I had certain expectations about Superman or I was wondering what was going to go, and I felt it wasn’t as good as I thought. It’s going. And I went to Fantastic Four. Saying how is this going to go? And I thought, yeah, I had a little bit of the same thing the the ending. Thing towards the end and some of the reasoning and stuff I was a bit like oh, this doesn’t make sense and I don’t understand where it does or doesn’t fit and I feel like they’re going to have to for some reason do another one in that universe for some reason. And I’m just a bit confused. I feel like it just kind of didn’t. You’re right, had that. Where’s that gear? Where’s the gear? Range. Where does it go up? Where do the stakes get bigger? Where does it become really important? But really I liked it because it. Was you can see across the entire movie from start to finish. It was a love letter to the time of the original Fantastic Four. Like all of the Kirby, all of the weird stories are just written into it. So it is made with a lot of reverence and a lot of love. And I really liked that because there was good messaging that was in there.  Speaker  Hmm.  Dion  The execution or some of the reasoning is just I don’t know how this fits. In the rest, like I love that it’s an outsider film, but I also don’t then. But what’s are we are we going to follow these people? Is that the point or is it just having a second one? Like I don’t. Know like it’s another Fantastic Four is like.  Quinny  Yeah.  Dion  Will we see him?  Jill  Yeah. Are we making this movie just to make a sequel? Just so we can make? Money.  Quinny  Yeah. Well, or are we making this one just because we needed to have a really good bad guy for the MCU. We’ve already announced who that bad guy. So we really had to have this film before doomsday could happen.  Jill  Yeah. There’s a lot of very upset people in. Our screening at the end of this movie.  Quinny  Yeah, yeah, there was.  Dion  Yeah, Speaking of bad guys, how do we feel about the villain aspects of this one?  Speaker  Hmm.  Jill  I was curious to how I would ever see Galactus executed on film, and I think it. Up to a point, it was well done.  Dion  Is it? Is it better than the giant cloud?  Speaker 6  Ohh yeah, we don’t need.  Dion  So the.  Jill  Some amorphous cloud like I want to see an actual Galactus and like how?  Dion  So.  Jill  Do you do? That I mean, especially after we had the Eternals where, you know, we have things God like beings in space, it’s like, OK, well now how do we make a Galactus?  Speaker  Hmm.  Jill  That was really cool, but then there was a moment where I thought it was. Not cool. Maybe I’ll talk about that in sport.  Dion  How? How did you feel about Charlotte Owl?  Jill  I thought it was sick. I’m like, yeah, let’s go back to the original Silver Surfer. Yeah. People will be surprised to know the original Silver Surfer was not a dude.  Quinny  I I knew that Michelle label was an alternate, but I didn’t realize that. Jill  I think the original Silver Surfer was a woman, and then it was her lover that begged Galactus to trade places with her.  Quinny  Yeah, yeah. Entry.  Dion  Interesting, yeah.  Jill  And disappointed we didn’t get the what if Aunt May was the Herald for Galactus and we didn’t get the golden oldie.  Dion  What are you talking about? Marisa? To me, isn’t that old?  Quinny  I I think.  Speaker 3  No.  Quinny  I think there were there were sequences in there watching the the Silver Surfer surfing through.  Speaker  Ohh.  Quinny  Like Kirby Crackle, ******* cosmic power surfing through black holes where I was like, **** yeah, this is cool. You know, surfing around curving laser beams and ****. I was like.  Dion  Well, grab. Yeah.  Speaker 3  Yes.  Dion  ******* hell yeah, that’s that’s the weird success stuff. That was the bitter.  Speaker  Hmm.  Dion  Was like, oh, this is great. Like, how do you put the Silver Surfer in? Why does it doesn’t even make sense. And it’s like, yeah, it does. If you lean into that. Crazy kind of 60s vibe that it originally was about. It’s like, yeah, I’m just gonna surf, like, through cosmic waves, man, it’s. Like. Cool. That’s fun. Yeah, it helps if you take LSD.  Quinny  Hmm.  Speaker  Yeah.  Dion  You know.  Quinny  Like there was something so ******* cool with all of that visual stuff. Yeah, that up until now, we’ve never really gotten because the only other time we’re seeing the Silver Surfer, he was on Earth, so it didn’t have that real cosmic kind of.  Dion  Maybe. He was the T1000 man.  Jill  Thing, yeah.  Speaker  Hmm.  Dion  He just kind. Of morphed around as needed for the plot.  Quinny  Your thoughts on on the Silver Surfer?  Peta  Neutral. Cool. I I don’t have a lot of feelings about the Silver Surfer as a character, but I thought she was. I thought it it was cool execution.  Dion  Yeah.  Quinny  Hmm. Yeah, look cool. And I like the the human eyes too. I thought that was kind of cool. Yeah, cause you I feel like you still need something to latch onto for a motion, yeah.  Speaker  Mm-hmm.  Quinny  I thought that was smart.  Speaker  And. Look, there’s look.  Dion  There’s lots of fun stuff in there. Standouts for me. I I I need to say I really annoyed that they didn’t rename it the fantastic six because to be honest, there are 6 characters in this movie. By the end of it, you’re watching it like there’s not just four, there’s more. Who you’re following through with, which was a bit of a surprise because I was like, OK, right. You’re just going to lean very heavily into the entire thing. Sure. I really. Kirby, I love that they went into galactic space because that’s kind of that’s that kind of that’s really fun. Like Reed Richards is that kind of character who, you know, is your prototypical 50s, you know, American Americanized painting, you know, of, like, it’s a pipe and slippers and, you know. Dad’s home.  Jill  Yeah. The Norman Rockwell. Yes. Please looking forward.  Dion  Yeah, absolutely. 100% The Rockwell and it it. But presented in that very conservative way, but he’s not a conservative. Like you know, it’s kind of like I’m just going to learn how to fold matter and bend this, and then we’re going to space. All right, everyone, safety third. Let’s go. That’s kind of Reed riches. Like he built a thing called the Ultimate Nullifier. And it kills anything in the known Marvel Universe. And then he’s just like ohh someone.  Quinny  He’s.  Dion  Like.  Speaker  Like.  Dion  ******** Reed, you know like.  Quinny  One thing you you said to me afterwards too.  Jill  Yeah, I mean. He just casually solved teleportation in this.  Dion  Yeah, yeah.  Jill  Film or whatever.  Quinny  Whatever. Whatever one thing you said to me too, and I agreed like they’ve always struggled to get Reed Richards powers looking good on screen. Like it’s very hard to do stretchy guy without it looking dumb, but one of the things that is kind of sad is that in the.  Dion  Yes.  Quinny  The comics and everything. Quite often you’ll see him, and that stretchiness of his body is a. Is. A all about echoing who he’s mentally. Yeah. So his arms are over here. You know, riding on the blackboard and his other arms over here, smoking a pipe and his head is, you know, stretched out over here, looking at the, you know, out the window or something like that. And there wasn’t much of that. It was very much like, this is traditionally handsome Pedro.  Peta  Yeah.  Jill  It’s it’s tiny. Yeah, it’s a tiny bit like he was doing. A little bit of the blackboard. Stuff and the catching things, but.  Speaker 6  Yeah, I don’t.  Jill  I don’t think we really got to see him actually use his powers much in the film as a whole.  Quinny  Nope. Nope.  Dion  It’s very, very expensive to animate Pedro Pascal.  Peta  It’s it’s a dump power.  Speaker 3  Pete. Pete, in there, it’s true.  Jill  I mean, it might be a time you. They didn’t quite mesh as much and I felt like some of them were lost like I think Ben Grimm’s the thing.  Speaker 6  Hmm.  Dion  Totally kind of lost in the hole as much to do. No, I I didn’t get enough of that thing because one of the most important things I know about Ben Grimace, he’s the real heart of the team. And while that was great, like I loved, you know, uncles, you’ve got uncles going on there. I loved it. You know, Johnny and and Ben are totally down for, you know, being uncles. I just thought he got a little bit lost and I have big issues with some of the purple headed warrior of the lactose, which I’ll talk about in spoilers, but yeah, overall fun time. Not a long time.  Quinny  Fair enough, Pete. Number.  Peta  I’m going to say I’m going to say I’m going to say 76 because I do think that it was. Really well put together but. The the I mean I’ll have some stuff to say when we spoil some things. Yeah, I’ll try to keep it brief. Actually, there was one point I think I said to you guys that I’d nearly walked out of there with more tips. Than I started with.  Quinny  I’m still wanting to know how that works.  Peta  Luckily, luckily I I didn’t have to go full rage out on it.  Quinny  So I’m very impressed.  Peta  Umm. But yeah, it’s just those kinds of like those those plot points that that just didn’t quite work for me were just a little bit kind of too conveniently driving the plot. And I didn’t quite buy even in the world of the story, that really kind of helped me back from from. Losing any tips at all?  Quinny  So so number of tips is 2. Hmm but. Peta  Ohh, also the young Kelly’s Uncanny Valley baby was distressed.  Quinny  Though apparently that they had a live baby on set 99% of the time.  Peta  In some shots, I was gonna say you, but you can tell the. Shots that aren’t, yeah.  Dion  Yeah, yeah. Babies don’t look like babies on screen. You gotta pay. They yeah.  Peta  I mean, either it was a fully uncanny valley baby or they were doing something to kind of make the baby look like it was looking, but there was something. Yeah. And whenever whenever Ben Grimm’s holding the baby, it’s like. Remember, she only saw it like 4 days ago and it feels like.  Jill  OK, here’s the weird thing though. Like after I watched Superman, I kind of wanted to see it again, but I don’t know if that was to try and enjoy it more or like to get the things that I didn’t really get about it. But this one I’m not really like in a rush to go back. To the movie for it.  Quinny  Hmm.  Jill  But. I did like it more than Superman. Then. I think I’m going to give it. 69.  Speaker 3  Nice.  Dion  Nice.  Jill  It was just a nice movie.  Quinny  Yeah, 69 and still 2 tips.  Peta  Yeah.  Dion  Quinny, what have you.  Quinny  Yeah. Got. I’m very similar to you know, I’m I’m probably I’m probably more in line with the pizza like. Yeah, 70. I’m going to go 77. I don’t know why. Yeah. Actually.  Peta  Just feels like a 77.  Speaker  Vibe.  Quinny  Like I I was a bit more warm on Superman whereas this. Like it’s it’s a perfectly fun, pleasant film. Like there’s nothing wrong with it, but it also just to me, felt like it. Was. Didn’t have much, particularly to say. Other than you know, wouldn’t it be nice if we could all work together and yeah. But also, maybe that’s what we needed at the moment is something that wasn’t too dangerous or whatever and. I don’t know. Yeah, it’s it’s 77 for me, but I just find it so.  Dion  Weird. We’ve, we’ve, we’ve, we’ve focused a lot on the non spoilery side and we’re running rapidly running out of time. So let’s go to the dinner clip to find out why they’re all such a nice blending together, then come back and see how much we. It’s just that there was a moment at the end where I was like, I am going to have to have another full on rant about killing off female characters via self sacrifice and doing it to two female characters in one scene. UM.  Quinny  Thank God.  Peta  They recovered. They did recover. They recovered from it a bit and it didn’t really feel like it wasn’t going to recover. But for a moment there I was like, oh, oh, we are going to throw down.  Jill  I don’t believe you didn’t realise the magic baby was gonna save the day.  Speaker 3  Sacrifice.  Peta  I did. It did, but there was a part of me that was kind of like you better ******* not.  Dion  Yeah, yeah, there was a little bit of that was it? It’s like, don’t you ******* dare? Jesus Christ, he’s not a. I’m not a linguist, but I’m pretty sure you cannot translate an entire language with three words like I don’t. I don’t know that that’s possible. The Rosetta Stone had more than than than 3 words.  Speaker 3  Yeah. Hmm.  Dion  Now.  Peta  I I don’t see how I don’t see how.  Dion  Important to understand that this is in the Universe 8 to 8 where things can exist a little differently and they are not this bog standard and it was one of those.  Peta  Oh.  Speaker 6  But it’s it’s.  Jill  Things are like super.  Peta  It’s not the kind of plot point that you can explain away in your brain with that kind of reasoning like it’s not, but.  Dion  It has to be because that’s why I was. I was ******** about it and I yelled at Quinney until it came up to the thing. It’s like, but it’s not the real Galactus. And I’m like. Oh yeah, **** everything in this movie is not the real one from our universe. What? I’m getting angry at can easily be retconned by an executive who doesn’t like the feedback form.  Speaker  Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah.  Jill  But this is also a universe where Reed is a super genius that can solve teleportation and like, move a planet. That’s.  Speaker  Hmm.  Peta  It just like the jump between ohh, I’ve managed to do it to an egg.  Jill  Come on.  Peta  Let’s do it to a planet. Nothing will go wrong. I actually, I almost thought that, like, that’s where it was gonna get interesting. Like, that was gonna be this universe is snap moment when they, like, accidentally. Left half the people behind or something.  Quinny  That that’s what I that’s. What I was kinda hoping for like.  Jill  Yeah, there weren’t really many stakes.  Quinny  No, I ******* love the idea of them actually going *******. We’re gonna teleport the whole planet and.  Dion  And ******* it.  Quinny  Up what? Could something goes wrong like they they go to the wrong place or they find themselves in the ******* negative zone.  Jill  Like that ******* DC convergence where the two planets had to merge together.  Peta  Or and that’s the thing.  Dion  They do. How did they do faster than life travel, but. Not work out how radar. Exists stop the fact that Silver Surfer was coming to blow up all of their teleportation machines that that shaped.  Quinny  Me. She’s very fast.  Peta  And in your hand it just kind of looked like a regular size spaceship. I don’t know why they couldn’t have just muted it or something like it’s like felt like a lot of like ohh The thing is coming very slowly. This is the only thing we can think of.  Dion  That was my big ***** point that I will get my big boy britches on and have a whinge about. Galactus’s ******* world eating ship is just a giant space grinder and. And I didn’t like that because if you’re gonna go to, like the extent that they went to, which was really curvy, whole super 60s kind of thing.  Speaker  Right.  Dion  Make the spaceship ******* weird. Make it the giant machines that don’t. You don’t understand the purpose of what they do like. Have something that’s in there.  Speaker 3  Hmm.  Jill  Yeah. What happened to like the? Big straw that he just shoves in the. Planet and like sucks it up like.  Dion  Yeah, all of that. But I mean, just like have the weird like, Kirby was great for drawing like. Contraptions that you love on the contraption, and they don’t. You don’t know why or how they work, or they have like extra bits that go off and they crackle with energy that you don’t understand how it sort of goes. He didn’t care about making it look well built. He cared about making something cool and stupid. And then they put Galactus. Fair enough, looked pretty good, you know, for a big.  Quinny  I look I. Liked big man collectors. I was down.  Jill  For that, yeah. I didn’t like how his. Height fluctuated with convenience.  Peta  Say he wasn’t that big in the end. Though was he he? He looked.  Jill  The lost, yeah.  Dion  A bit of juice out the back of the tube and then he got a bit.  Quinny  Maybe.  Speaker 6  So then he went and shrunk a bit.  Dion  Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.  Quinny  OK, let’s go with that, yeah.  Jill  He’s like ohh, now he can fit in this big circle on the ground that he like, would have Godzilla crushed the moment ago.  Dion  Crush. Sure.  Peta  Confused if planet size or if Godzilla size.  Dion  Yeah. Also how would sue push if 2?  Quinny  Because her push is not based on size, it’s based on willpower.  Dion  No, but push, baby. Ohh no. OK, recover. Push, galactus. Big baby. Oh, no much.  Peta  Is is based on magic mummy power?  Quinny  Yeah, yes, yeah. Like that. That big kind of finale stuff. I was like when he started to climb back out. I was like, ohh. OK now.  Dion  No. Well.  Quinny  We’re gonna get some shoes.  Jill  Yeah, I was like. Oh ****, I jumped.  Quinny  Yeah. Yeah. I was like, ******* sweet. Great. OK, now we’re gonna really ******* now, now we’re gonna wrap it up, but Nope. That’s just that’s it. Cool. Everybody get home. I would love to have seen them do something real. ******* ballsy. I would have loved to have seen them lose the earth, you know? Yeah. So that that’s why this Fantastic Four, like instead of. Yeah, that’s the run like this.  Jill  On the run on the. Sleeper on.  Peta  I’m not sure that Marvel is doing its answer to the trolley problem properly.  Quinny  Why not teleport the ******* baby and the family to another end of the universe, or to a different ******* dimension or whatever?  Jill  Because they answered that in the slack with pocket holes does.  Speaker  Yeah. Yes.  Dion  I mean. I look I I I I really got that like I enjoyed the bit where they were like, no, this is it honestly. Like we we we may be the people that everyone looks up to on the Earth and that’s a bit problematic to put that much. Responsibility. On four people who were there, but at least they always did it with heart, honesty, integrity and overall admission of failure. To the world.  Speaker  Hmm.  Dion
