More than a third of patients released from the hospital never fill their discharge prescriptions, but “meds-to-beds” programs can help improve that statistic. That is the approach Renown Health in Reno, Nev., took with the help of its 340B savings. Renown Vice President of Pharmacy Services Adam Porath joins us to describe how this meds-to-beds program improves patient care.Hospital readmissions down, patient convenience upRenown Health's 340B-funded program offers medication to patients who are being discharged from the hospital, either through bedside delivery, pneumatic tube, or a unique discharge lounge. The effort began as a pilot for Medicaid patients in 2016, and it demonstrated patients in the program were 25% less likely to be readmitted to the hospital once discharged. These health improvements plus the added convenience of medication access for patients convinced the system to expand the program.340B pricing to patients who cannot payPorath says Renown Health refers patients who cannot afford discharge medications to its social services team, which can authorize providing the drugs to those patients at the 340B-discounted rate. The team also will work with patients to see if they qualify for coverage such as Medicaid or other programs to reduce their out-of-pocket costs. Porath said Renown's meds-to-beds program provides drugs free of charge to about 30 patients per month. The keys to successRenown Health's meds-to-beds program has been a success, with more than 80% of eligible patients participating as of the end of 2024. The hospital expanded the services to all patients and started operating it 24/7 in April 2024. Porath said the keys to success include regular reporting to stakeholders and innovations to handle a large volume of patients discharging at once. Such changes allow all parties to stay in the loop with the development of the program and to celebrate successes as they occur.ResourcesRead Our Analysis of the First Federal Court Decision on RebatesSecond Federal Judge Allows 340B Health, Member Hospitals To Intervene in Rebate Lawsuit

From videos of drunk and disorderly airline passengers to stories of hospital visitors angrily refusing to wear masks, customer-facing work seems to have gotten a lot more difficult – even dangerous -- over the past few years. It's important that organizations understand the experience of frontline workers now, and help to better protect their employees, says Christine Porath, professor of management at Georgetown University. She's studied incivility for 20 years, and has spoken to workers in many industries in the last few years about what it's like working with customers today - with stress, anger, and incivility seemingly on the rise. And she has advice for managers and leaders. Porath is the author of the HBR Big Idea article "Frontline Work When Everyone Is Angry."
In this episode, Dr. Michael Maddaus speaks with Christine Porath, an associate professor at Georgetown University McDonough School of Business. Porath has dedicated her career to understanding the business and personal impacts of how people treat one another in the workplace, and how the influence of leaders plays a huge role in happiness and engagement at work. The need for human connection is part of our genes. But Porath identifies today's modern technologies and self-sufficient mindset as disconnecting factors that lead to increases in anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems. Her book, Mastering Civility: A Manifesto for the Workplace, documents the financial implications of poor leadership and suggests a variety of solutions. Her newest book, Mastering Community: The Surprising Ways Coming Together Moves Us from Surviving to Thriving, tells of the importance of workplace connection and feelings of value, belonging, and understanding. Listen as Dr. Maddaus and Porath discuss the need, at work and at home, to foster relationships built on connection and support, and how this can make all the difference, especially when times are hard. “The Resilient Surgeon” is a program from the Society designed to inspire cardiothoracic surgeons to be their best selves, in and out of the OR, using scientifically proven tools and recovery strategies of the world's top performers. The crew then return to town to recount their horror to the authorities. The crew quickly learns they are being investigated for murder. At this time, Travis Walton is missing for 5 days. When he returns home, he tells a horrifying story that would shake the town of Snowflake. In 1961, Betty and Barney hill are driving down the country side of New Hampshire's White Mountains when Betty notices a flying saucer in the sky. Quickly concerned that they are being followed, they drive away from the tic tac shaped object, until it stops in from of them, just feet above the road. Barney exits the vehicle and sees the passengers aboard the craft, looking down at them. Betty and Barney Hill flee the scene in horror and make it home safely.

Brendan Porath is one of my favorite voices in golf. He's a witty writer with lots to say about the events that unfold in professional golf. He has also found ways to extend those talents into success in television and podcasting. Porath has blazed an interesting content trail in a career that has seen him contributing to a number of reputable outlets. At the time of our recording he had just started a new role with Golf Digest as an editor there. I'm excited to see what he produces there. Many golf fans know Porath best for is his co-hosting duties on the popular podcast The Shotgun Start. Alongside Andy Johnson, he delivers laughs, nicknames, and serious golf takes on the show which drops every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The Shotgun Start has built a strong community of listeners who have embraced the banter between the co-hosts and helped turn it into a shared language online. Now a few years into that production journey, Porath and Johnson continue to raise expectations for how new age golf media can deliver compelling content. Like many guests on this show, Porath and I have connected on Twitter and it was great to have an extensive conversation with him here. During our discussion we talked about his career journey, the success of The Shotgun Start, the state of the professional game, and why we both love squeezing in a late evening round of golf. There were quite a few good golf media takes as well. Porath has carved a great place for himself in golf's media landscape and I'm confident he will continue to be one of the voices who shapes its ongoing evolution. It was great to catch up with him and I'm looking forward to when we can enjoy some golf together sometime soon. Until then, I'll keep laughing to he and Andy and enjoying his lovely words on golf. Be sure to follow Brendan Porath on Twitter at @BrendanPorath and subscribe to The Shotgun Start podcast. Thanks as always for listening to Mid-Am Crisis. Mike Porath began The Mighty after being inspired by his daughter Annabel, who was diagnosed with Duplication Q15 syndrome – a rare disease that rapidly slows down development. He built this community to understand other families' experiences with this syndrome, create a safe space for individuals to share their health challenge stories, and for individuals to help one another. Mike and his wife bought The Mighty URL and began recruiting individuals to write their health challenge stories and convert them to members of the community. As more and more individuals joined the community, Mike noticed how simple some solutions were and saw individuals in similar situations providing tips and solutions to issues that doctors couldn't resolve. The Mighty focused on the storytelling side of community and real connections were built, more individuals spoke up about their struggles, and they grew to have over 15,000 writers in the community. Mike talks about the importance of listening to what community members want and how they used Bevy to create the events and interaction that the members desired. The Mighty now has over 3 million members and continues to support, uplift, and provide a safe space for anyone dealing with health challenges. Who is this episode for?: Non Profit, In person & Online, Starting 3 key takeaways: - The Mighty found success in recruiting individuals to share their health stories and write thank you letters to those who helped them on their health journey, eventually growing to 15,000+ writers. - Mike grew The Mighty to over 3 million members by focusing on listening and learning from community members to ensure the community evolved in the way they desired. - When The Mighty community members' shared struggles, many solutions were found amongst other community members sharing insights and suggestions when doctors had no answers.
