This week we talk to therapist, author, and podcaster, Janice Selbie. Scott and Priska saw an ad for the Shameless Sexuality conference and knew they had to talk to Janice about her story in which she went from the most conservative fundamentalist world to a sex-positive, religion-free life. The Pentecostal life wasn't restrictive enough for Janice, so she joined a local group of Mennonites where she did her best to fit in but was never fully accepted by the women there. Now, after an eventful deconstruction phase, Janice has created the Divorcing Religion organization (with a podcast Scott was a guest on) as well as the aforementioned Shameless Sexuality conference. Janice is also the author of Divorcing Religion: A Memoir and Survival Handbook. Janice Selbie on Divorcing Religion! Janice Selbie lived 40 years of her life as a devout Christian. Living a reality reminiscent of a Margaret Atwood character in “The Handmaid's Tale,” Janice became the quintessential Renaissance woman, complete with Mennonite-inspired shapeless clothing and modest head-coverings. She rejected all the creature comforts of secular life — TV, radio, music, newspapers, and magazines, and committed to homeschooling her children. It wasn't until a series of personal upheavals challenged her obedience that Janice felt justified to question her lifelong devotion to blind faith. Janice is now a Registered Professional Counsellor and a Religious Trauma Recovery Coach hosting Divorcing Religion Workshops that help others experiencing the significant losses associated with religious de-conversion.

Janice Selbie was raised evangelical and turned to closed Mennonite (Holdeman/Church of God in Christ Mennonite) during her husband's bible college years. She homeschooled her children, wore a head covering, and was very conservative. Her marriage was difficult and got harder as the years went on. Eventually, they had a series of tragedies strike that she could not explain if there was indeed a loving or omniscient God. This plunged her into a time of existential crisis. She divorced her husband and religion, went back to school to become a registered professional counselor, and connected with Dr. Marlene Winell who coined the term Religious Trauma (Dr. Winell is now her friend and mentor). Then she founded the Conference on Religious Trauma (CORT) and this October the Shameless Sexuality: Life After Purity Culture online conference.Fight for Children's Rights: Congress Needs to Pass Children's Rights ActConnect with Janice SelbieHer Podcast: https://www.divorcing-religion.com/religious-trauma-podcastWebsite: https://www.divorcing-religion.comIG: https://instagram.com/wisecounsellor?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@janiceselbie?_t=8UZKbpvXcHG&_r=1Connect with Andrew PledgerLinktree: https://www.liinks.co/4ndrewpledger Hosted on Acast. Rebuilding our identity after divorcing religion can feel like a daunting task. At some point, we must determine our post-religious values and confront identities which were placed on us by our parents and religious community. Once we have established who we are not, it is time to consider whom we wish to be and take steps in that direction. At this point, you must call upon the courage to be yourself, which has ramifications in every imaginable arena, from sexuality to social media. Janice Selbie, RPC joins us once again to share tips on coping with leaving our past identity behind and finding the courage to rebuild our new identities after transitioning out of religion. Janice was born and raised in a charismatic Christian home, attending Pentecostal, Vineyard, and other Evangelical churches before eventually marrying a man who would become a pastor. In her 30s she became ultraconservative, donning a head-covering, homeschooling their children, and rejecting any vestiges of secular life (TV, radio, music, newspapers, magazines, etc.). “I referred to myself as ‘Mennocostal,' frequently attending closed Mennonite churches run by the Holdeman Mennonites.” It wasn't until her 40s that Janice began experiencing doubts about her deeply held faith. As her marriage unraveled, her questions grew. She found herself wondering about the impact of religion on sexuality, gender roles and equality, social justice, and more. “Not permitted to explore these questions, I felt like a beach ball held beneath the water for too long. My sadness, confusion, and anger threatened to explode if something didn't change.” After ending her decades-long marriage, Janice went back to school to attain her Diploma of Applied Psychology and Counselling. In this session of RfRx we will explore how we can find our new identity after leaving religion and how we can grow without the guidance of an all knowing God. As a registered professional counsellor with a personal history of religious trauma syndrome, Janice is passionate about helping others understand their losses and embrace their new identity in the secular world. Her own deconversion experience compelled her to develop the on-line Divorcing Religion Workshop, a 6-week interactive workshop combining written exercises and group work to bring together those from diverse backgrounds who are walking a similar journey. Hosted by Amaia Perez, the RfR Online Programming Director, and Eric Wells, the RfR Support Group Director. Exercise List - List 20 things you like about yourself. Focus on character traits. - Contrasting Views Exercise: Write down former views about yourself, futures, others, sex, etc, then compare them to your current views on the same topic. - Examining Beliefs Exercise: Examine beliefs on how you view yourself and how you view others. How was I introduced to that belief? Do I still believe in that belief? More about Janice Selbie - http://www.DivorcingReligion.com - http://www.PanoramaCounselling.com The primary focus of Recovering from Religion (RfR) is to offer hope, healing, and support to those struggling with issues of doubt and non-belief. Janice Selbie was born and raised in a charismatic Christian home, attending Pentecostal, Vineyard, and other Evangelical churches before eventually marrying a man who would become a pastor. In her 30s she became ultraconservative, wearing a head-covering, homeschooling their children, and rejecting any vestiges of secular life ( including TV, radio, music, newspapers, magazines, etc.). My sadness, confusion, and anger threatened to explode if something didn't change.”  After ending her decades-long marriage, Janice went back to school to attain her Diploma of Applied Psychology and Counseling.   “My passion is to help others who are experiencing the multiple significant losses associated with religious de-conversion. My own journey could have been easier if I had been able to connect with even one other person who had walked away from their faith and built a healthy life afterward.”   These painful experiences influenced Janice to develop the Divorcing Religion Workshop so that others could gain knowledge and tools to help with their own journey out of fundamentalist religions.   In May of 2021, Janice hosted the inaugural on-line 'Conference on Religious Trauma' (CORT), with over 20 speakers providing education & insight into RTS & recovery. Counselor ("counsellor" for the Canucks) Janice Selbie joins Chuck and Brady for a insightful, practical conversation on grieving God. Janice came from a ultra-Fundamentalism background that became hyper-charged after marrying her now ex-husband. While working at a bookstore, she befriended a group of Mennonite (Anabaptist) women and began wearing head coverings like they did out of a obedience to the Bible. Around the time of her divorce, Janice encountered traumas that shook her from her cognitive dissonance, and she left the faith. Next, she pursued a counselor degree, met Dr. Marlene Winell, and now specializes in freeing people from the mental grips of Fundamentalism.   In this episode, Janice shares practical ways to recover from religion healthily, the importance of rituals to symbolize the end of one's Fundamentalism, and how cognitive behavioral therapy can be very useful.
