The unique, unquenchable writer and activist Grace Paley would have turned 100 in 2022. On this Selected Shorts, host Meg Wolitzer shares our tribute to the influential and outspoken New Yorker who was a great friend of the series. Paley's emphasis on friends, family, and doing the right thing are evident in the three stories on this show. In “Wants,” a woman has a chance encounter while returning a lot of overdue library books. It's read by Adina Verson. Two old friends work their way from childhood to middle age in “Ruthy and Edie,” read by Rita Wolf. And we meet a woman with a wonderfully checkered past in “Goodbye and Good Luck,” read by Joanna Gleason. Featuring commentary from novelist Lauren Groff.
Tony Award winner Joanna Gleason visits the show to talk about some of her past roles and to share her latest projects.
Tune in as Vanessa Ondi (Best Week Ever Podcast) jumps back into her guest seat for a discussion on The Wedding Planner, the 2001 rom-com starring Jennifer Lopez as a diligent wedding planner whose latest gig sees her contending with a cheater, a stalker, a statue's broken schlong, and other sorts of shenanigans. Steve being a douchebag (albeit one who's relatively more bearable compared to the absolute vat of toxic sludge that Matthew McConaughey plays in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days), a jarring usage of the R-slur in this fluffy rom-com, and the truth of those brown M&Ms comprise a few of the talking points for this episode. Directed by Adam Shankman, The Wedding Planner stars Jennifer Lopez, Matthew McConaughey, Justin Chambers, Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, Judy Greer, Alex Rocco, Frances Bay, Lou Myers, Joanna Gleason, Charles Kimbrough, Kathy Najimy, Kevin Pollak, Fred Willard, and Bree Turner. Tread Perilously's Ampersand Month continues with an episode of the obscure sitcom Love & War called "I Love a Parade." The gang manages to get a fairly decent spot for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, even if they all forgot to buy coffee with their donuts. The festivities take a turn when a random woman asks Jack to hoist her son up on his shoulders so he can see the floats. She soon disappears, leaving the others to search for her. Meanwhile, Dana and Jack discuss the best course action. Will they end up raising the child as their own or will a Thanksgiving miracle save the day? Erik and Justin get lost in the woods right quick. The show's supporting cast, which includes Joanna Gleason, Charles Robinson, and Suzie Plakson, gets high marks. Leads Annie Potts and Jay Thomas end up not as lauded, although both get discussed a great deal. Potts proves to be a Tread Perilously sweetheart while Thomas ... well, Thomas is another matter all together. Justin eulogizes the sitcom as a format while Erik suggests Love & War represents its lowest ebb. They try to re-conceive the show for Plakson and Michael Nouri (who also appears in the episode) and find a better use for the rest of the cast.

In 1991, Broadway witnessed one of its most spectacular falls from grace with Nick & Nora, a musical adaptation of the beloved The Thin Man novel and film series. With a dream team that included Arthur Laurents, the creative force behind classics like West Side Story and Gypsy, Charles Strouse, the prolific composer of Bye Bye Birdie and Annie, and Richard Maltby Jr., known for Ain't Misbehavin', this show had all the makings of a hit. The star-studded cast featured Barry Bostwick and Joanna Gleason, among others. However, despite the promise on paper, Nick & Nora faced an unprecedented series of delays, setbacks, and ultimately, a one-week run. This episode sheds light on why the show faced so many challenges, from those who were there every step of the way. We explore the explosive clashes, financial woes, and behind-the-scenes drama that led to Nick & Nora's abrupt closure, serving as a cautionary tale that even Broadway's brightest stars can find themselves lost in the shadows. Host Meg Wolitzer shares our tribute to the influential and outspoken New Yorker Grace Paley, who would have turned 100 in 2022. Her emphasis on friends, family, and doing the right thing are evident in the three stories on this show. Backstage interviews with Wolf and Gleason are featured.
The Annapolis Film Festival opens on Thursday, March 23rd, and will run through March 26th, featuring more than 70 films, panels, coffee chats, and parties throughout Annapolis. We had the opportunity to hop on the phone with Joanna Gleason, the director of her film that will be screening at the festival--The Grotto! The Grotto | March 24, 2023 | 7pm | Maryland Hall (Main) The Grotto | March 25, 2023 | 7 pm | Maryland Hall (Bowen) When her fiance dies unexpectedly, Alice Kendall inherits half ownership of The Grotto, a struggling desert nightclub where she discovers eccentric performers and a heartbreaking secret. As Christmas approaches, Alice is on the brink of a leap of faith as forces, both seen and unseen, beckon her toward her future. This heartwarming film is the directorial debut of Joanna Gleason, the acclaimed stage and screen actress who won the Tony Award for her role as “The Baker's Wife” in the original Broadway production of Into the Woods. Gleason wrote this story in remembrance of the friends she lost and wanted to tell the stories of women who feel they're only a small part of someone else's bigger story. Betsy Brandt (award-winning actress from Breaking Bad) will steal your heart as the aimless “Alice” who stumbles into this unexpected wonderland that becomes a healing sanctuary for lost souls. Tickets and passes are on sale now for the 11th Annual Annapolis Film Festival.

Mark Wahlberg shines as porn star on the rise Dirk Diggler surrounded by an ensemble of Hollywood somebodies, including Oscar nominated Burt Reynolds and Julianne Moore, Don Cheadle, John C. Reilly, Heather Graham, William H. Macy, and QUEEN Philip Seymour Hoffman. To say nothing of Joanna Gleason going full Medea, Ana's mom on PEN15, Lisa Todd Wexley, some porn star cameos, a wonderfully unhinged last act Alfred Molina and that infamous prosthetic dong at the end. Rusty and Mike (and Mason the producer) talk about their love of King of the Hill with a special Friday edition of their episode-by-episode podcast. Other Hill, Platter, and Kleinschmidt relatives Ladybird Hill is the Hills' 13-year-old[8] purebred Georgia Bloodhound named after Lady Bird Johnson. It's said that her mother helped track down James Earl Ray, as revealed by Hank in episode 7 of season 1 titled "Westie Side Story". Colonel Cotton Lyndal Hill (voiced by Toby Huss) is Hank's cantankerous father, Peggy's father-in-law, and Bobby's grandfather. He has a hair-trigger temper. Despite his many shortcomings, he occasionally showed a softer side, for example, in the episode "Cotton's Plot" where he helped Peggy learn to walk again after her parachuting accident. Didi Hill (voiced by Ashley Gardner) is Cotton's second wife, Hank's stepmother, Peggy's stepmother-in-law and Bobby's stepgrandmother. She's a 28-year-old candy striper after she retired from being an exotic dancer. Good Hank Jeffrey "G.H." Hill is Cotton's and Didi's infant son, and the younger of Hank's two half-brothers. G.H. is an abbreviation for "Good Hank," implying that the original Hank was unsatisfactory to his father. Matilda "Tilly" Mae Garrison (formerly Hill) (voiced by Tammy Wynette in 1997–1998, Beth Grant in 1999, and K Callan in 2000–2009) is Cotton's first wife, Hank's mother, Peggy's mother-in-law and Bobby's grandmother, and is 69 years old. Elroy "Lucky" Kleinschmidt (voiced by Tom Petty) is Luanne's husband, a 36-year-old hillbilly. It's often hard for Lucky to hold down a job (he has no credit or Social Security number). He lives on the remainder of the $53,000 "settlement monies" he received after "slipping on pee-pee at the Costco" having had a portion of his spine fused. Gracie Margaret Kleinschmidt is the daughter of Lucky and Luanne. She was born in the season 13 episode "Lucky See, Monkey Do". Luanne originally wanted to name her Lasagna (stating that lasagna was their favorite food) while under the influence of hospital analgesics, but choosing a more conventional name after she had recovered. Myrna Kleinschmidt (voiced by Paget Brewster) is Lucky's sister, Luanne's sister-in-law, Gracie's aunt and the main antagonist in "Lucky See, Monkey Do". She is an intelligent, modern mother who only appears in the episode "Lucky See, Monkey Do". She has two children, one son and one daughter (Gracie's paternal first cousins) and raises them in strict accordance with contemporary parenting practices, something which leads her into a rivalry with Peggy, whose parenting skills are from older schools of thought, over how to assist Luanne as her pregnancy due date approaches. Leanne Platter (voiced by Pamela Adlon) is Luanne's violent alcoholic mother, Gracie's grandmother, Bobby's aunt and Lucky's mother-in-law, and is 42 years old. Hoyt Platter (voiced by Johnny Knoxville) is Luanne's father, Peggy's older brother, Hank's brother-in-law, Bobby's uncle, Lucky's father-in-law, Gracie's grandfather and Leanne's ex-husband, and is 50 years old. Despite Luanne's beliefs, he never worked on an oil rig, but was in jail for most of Luanne's life, with the oil rig story acting as a cover so Luanne wouldn't know her father was a convict. Maddy Platter (voiced by Joanna Gleason) is Peggy's and Hoyt's mother, Hank's mother-in-law and Bobby's and Luanne's grandmother. Mother Platter lives in Montana with her husband Doc. She's an old-fashioned, tough-as-nails rancher type and loathes Peggy for deserting the family ranch and not marrying a local neighbor boy. Doc Platter (voiced by Stephen Root) is Peggy's and Hoyt's father, Hank's father-in-law and Bobby's and Luanne's grandfather. Junichiro (voiced by David Carradine) is Hank's older half-brother, Peggy's half-brother-in-law and Bobby's half-uncle who has lived in Japan all his life. Dusty Hill (Himself) is the bassist/vocalist for the band ZZ Top and Hank's cousin. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Host Meg Wolitzer presents three works that explore the many-layered lives of women. Edwidge Danticat's essay “Women Like Us” honors the long line of strong women in her family, but also recognizes her need to distance herself in order to become a writer. The reader is the late Lynne Thigpen. In an excerpt from Nora Ephron's Heartburn, performed by Joan Allen, a philandering husband gets just what he deserves. And an order of nuns has hidden strengths—and comic timing—in Claire Luchette's “New Bees,” performed by Joanna Gleason.

For Video Edition, Please Click and Subscribe Here: https://youtu.be/6vcHvOUB5Tc It was in Michael Stewart and Cy Coleman's musical I Love My Wife (1977) – a satire on wife-swapping – that Gleason made her Broadway debut, playing Monica, for which she won a Theatre World Award. She returned to Broadway in a 1985 revival of Peter Nichols's play Joe Egg. Along with Marlo Thomas and Olympia Dukakis, Gleason was a member of the opening-night cast of Andrew Bergman's comedy Social Security (1986), for which Gleason won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play. Although she had already gained attention and honors for her stage work, her performance as the Baker's Wife in Stephen Sondheim's wry fairy-tale musical Into the Woods (1987) made her a Broadway leading lady. The musical itself won Tonys® for Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score, and Gleason earned a Tony® for Best Actress in a Musical. Her singing is preserved on the original Broadway cast recording. In the Thin Man-inspired musical Nick and Nora (1991) by Arthur Laurents, Charles Strouse, and Richard Maltby Jr., Gleason played the leading lady, and in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (2005). A familiar presence in movies and on television, Gleason appeared in two of Woody Allen's films – as Tony Roberts's embarrassed wife in Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) and as Allen's spouse in Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989). In Boogie Nights, she played Mark Wahlberg's abusive mother. On television, she was a regular on the CBS sitcom Love & War as the restaurant waitress Nadine Berkus. Other series in which Gleason appeared regularly are Hello, Larry; Temporarily Yours; Oh Baby; and Bette. She is married to the actor Chris Sarandon.
Peter & Nathan welcome a very special guest: the Rev'd Ed Bacon: legendary leader of progressive Christian causes, retired rector of All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena, and inveterate Sondheim fan. With Ed's help, we pull apart the spirituality, theology (and the trichology!) of what is probably Stephen Sondheim's best-known (and arguably best-loved) musical, the 1987 masterpiece Into the Woods. We talk about: - The subversive nature of fairy tales, and what we think we're doing when we tell these stories to children - What it means to go “into the woods” – and how can we befriend it? - Being nice, being good, losing our innocence – and what it means to be "white" - The complicated nature of community, and the promise and threat of the idea that "no one is alone" - The Gospel as Fairy Tale (with apologies and gratitude for Frederick Buechner's Telling the Truth, the book that caused at least one of us to become a priest!) You'll hear: - Bernadette Peters, Chip Zien, Joanna Gleason and the cast of the Original Broadway Cast Recording (1987) singing “Prologue,” “Giants in the Sky,” “Hello, Little Girl,” “I Know Things Now,” “No One Is Alone”, “Last Midnight,” and “Children Will Listen” Continue the conversation with Peter (@pgeinvan) and Nathan (@nathan_lerud) on Twitter, and follow the Gospel of Musical Theatre on Instagram or Twitter @gospelofmt.
We conclude our journey through Into the Woods with The Baker's Wife's moving and profound exploration of the meaning of life, "Moments in the Woods." "Once upon a time... later..."This week, Drew and Cassie are joined by Cassie's brother, Matthew, to explore the deconstruction of fairy tales in Act II of Into the Woods. In Act I, the Baker and his Wife collected the cow as white as milk, the cape as red blood, the hair as yellow as corn, and the slipper as pure as gold. They successfully lifted the curse on their house and now they have a baby, as they've wished for so long. Now, they are living "happily ever after," as are Cinderella, Jack, Little Red Riding Hood, and our other characters... or are they? Act II explores the consequences of the characters' actions in Act I in a fresh, new way. We dig in deep, discussing the complexity of Stephen Sondheim's score, the "bean theme," the many parallels between Act I and Act II, the Baker/Cinderella ship, the Jack/Little Red ship, the word "nice," some of the changes made before the show opened on Broadway, more "realization songs," dwarfs vs. dwarves, and much more that we can't reveal without getting too spoilery! What is Cassie's mysterious childhood memory of Act II? Which role was Matthew going to play in Drew's dream childhood backyard production of Into the Woods? What fascinating insights will Matthew offer regarding the Granny/Giant double casting? You'll have to listen to find out!Throughout the episode, we reference the following productions of Into the Woods. As always, we recommend watching before listening to the episode, but you definitely don't need to watch all of these! The original Broadway production is the one to watch for sure!- The 1987 original Broadway production, professionally filmed in 1989 (available on Broadway HD), starring Bernadette Peters as the Witch, Chip Zien as the Baker, Joanna Gleason as the Baker's Wife, Tom Aldredge as the Narrator/Mysterious Man, and Kim Crosby as Cinderella- The 2002 Broadway Revival production, starring Vanessa Williams as the Witch, Stephen DeRosa as the Baker, Kerry O'Malley as the Baker's Wife, John McMartin as the Narrator/Mysterious Man, and Laura Benanti as Cinderella- The 2010 West End Regent's Park production (available on Broadway HD), starring Hannah Waddingham as the Witch, Mark Hadfield as the Baker, Jenna Russell as the Baker's Wife, Billy Boyle as the Mysterious Man, and Helen Dallimore as Cinderella- The 2012 Central Park production, an American recreation of the West End Regent's Park production, starring Donna Murphy as the Witch, Denis O'Hare as the Baker, Amy Adams as Cinderella, Chip Zien as the Mysterious Man, and Jessie Mueller as Cinderella- The 2019 Hollywood Bowl production, starring Patina Miller as the Witch, Skyler Astin as the Baker, Sutton Foster as the Baker's Wife, Anthony Crivello as the Mysterious Man, and Sierra Boggess as CinderellaMusic: Through The Woods by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com
"Do you know what you wish? Are you certain what you wish it what you want?"Have we said "we're excited" enough yet? Probably, but we're going to say it approximately fifty more times. Drew and Cassie are joined by Drew's sister, Daurie, to work our way through the complexities of Act I of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Into the Woods. This 1987 musical tells the tale of a Baker and his Wife who learn that their next-door neighbor, a Witch, was once wronged by the Baker's father and so she placed a spell on them so they could never have a child. In order to break this spell, the Witch sends them "into the woods" to collect various iconic fairy tale objects. Act I of this musical weaves together the plots of four fairy tales: Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel. Along the way, we talk about the show's themes, the double-cast roles, Jack and Little Red's ages, sibling rivalry, the varied portrayals of the Baker and his relationship with the Baker's Wife, Milky White, Cassie's cues from the production she assistant stage managed, the Baker's Wife's "celebrity list," the show's choreography, Daurie's experience playing Rapunzel, the brilliance of this interpretation of Cinderella, and much more, including a plethora of our favorite quotes!Throughout the episode, we reference the following productions of Into the Woods. She’s brought to life by Hattie Winston. George Saunders’ story title says it all: “Lars Farf, Excessively Fearful Husband and Father” takes protectiveness to hilarious extremes.
