Given its phenomenal success across 18 seasons of television (not to mention numerous spin-offs and a global domination of international versions), it was only a matter of time before “RuPaul's Drag Race” leaped off the small screen and made its way into movie theaters. “Stop! That! Train!” is essentially a cinematic extension of the groundbreaking reality show, but with a fictionalized twist. Directed by Adam Shankman, the film stars the winner of “Drag Race's” All Stars Season 10, Ginger Minj, and frequent “Drag Race” competitor Jujubee as a pair of train attendants on the opulent Glamazonian Express. Their first journey on the luxury locomotive is interrupted by an approaching Stormaganza, which threatens to turn their maiden voyage into their last. The duo must find a way to save the train and all of its kooky passengers, but thankfully, they're not alone, as none other than President Judy Gagwell (RuPaul Charles) is ready to lend a manicured hand. Before “Stop! That! Train!” chugga-chuggas its way into theaters, Cody Dericks spoke with director Adam Shankman and leading ladies Ginger Minj and Jujubee about what inspired the film, what it was like going from television to film, and how, to drag queens, what might insult the average person can actually be a compliment. Be sure to also listen to my interviews with their co-stars Rachel Bloom & Latrice Royale, and Brooke Lynn Hytes, Marcia Marcia Marcia & Symone, and check out the film, now playing in theaters from Bleecker Street. Ginger Minj and Jujubee stop by to talk about their new film Stop! That! Train!, the World of Wonder and Bleecker Street comedy that casts them as the leads of a drag-fueled disaster movie parody. Behind movies like The Wedding Planner, A Walk to Remember and Hairspray (2007) is the director Adam Shankman. This June, Adam's back with a campy comedy starring RuPaul and Drag Race alumni called STOP! THAT! TRAIN! What sets his latest film apart from his previous work is that it's his first time, as a queer director, directing an entirely queer-led cast. Adam stops by Q to talk about his love of “stupid” comedy, why STOP! THAT! TRAIN! deserves to be seen in theatres, and what it means to him to finally direct a movie led by queer actors.
Bob and Monét welcome director, choreographer, and producer Adam Shankman. Adam talks about directing Stop! That! Train! and his approach to directing, and Monét reflects on working with Adam in Stop! That! Train!. They discuss The Shawshank Redemption vs. The Green Mile and share stories about Lady Gaga, John Travolta, and Adam's encounters with Oprah. Adam recalls John Waters' reaction to the Hairspray movie, who he might cast in Hairspray today, and their appreciation for Amanda Bynes. Plus, he breaks down how he got involved with RuPaul's Drag Race, walks through the process of directing a Rusical, reveals his favorite lip syncs, and imagines how he would direct a movie version of Rent. Interview Date: April 12th, 2026Episode SummaryIn this episode of The Business of Dance Podcast, Alicia Mae Holloway shares her extraordinary journey from a small-town competition dancer in West Virginia to building a multifaceted career in ballet, commercial dance, modeling, acting, and social media. She reflects on knowing from the age of three that dance was her purpose, and how that conviction led her to leave home at just 13 years old to pursue elite ballet training. From earning a full scholarship to the School of American Ballet to landing her first professional contracts, Alicia's story is one of deep faith, resilience, and bold commitment to her dreams.Alicia also opens up about the realities of a long professional career: painful auditions, injuries, rejection, career pivots, and the mental challenges that dancers face when their identity is tied so closely to performance. She shares how Dance Theatre of Harlem shaped her artistry, how social media unexpectedly expanded her career, and why authenticity matters more than perfection in today's entertainment world. Stuart and Jacob dive into the colorful world of "Hairspray," comparing John Waters' 1988 cult classic with the 2007 musical adaptation directed by Adam Shankman. They explore the evolution of Tracy Turnblad's story, from a quirky comedy about integration and body positivity to a high-energy musical extravaganza. How does the original's campy charm hold up against the star-studded, song-filled remake? And what do these films say about the changing landscape of social issues in cinema? Also in this episode, the hosts discuss Stuart's qualms with the logic of "Ella Enchanted", the impact of John Waters' unique filmmaking style, the differences in tone between the two films, and the significance of setting a film in the 1960s from the perspective of different decades. Joe Betance, Nathan Brown and Evan Ayres discuss, dissect and deconstruct Episode 7 of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 16. Give online therapy a try at betterhelp.com/DRAGRACE and get on your way to being your best self. Summary In this episode, the hosts discuss the lip sync battle, Maya's confidence, post-elimination reactions, workroom dynamics, role assignments, the rusical challenge, and the strategy behind choosing roles. This episode of RuPaul's Drag Race Recap featured discussions about Miss America, the choreography segment, elimination day, the rusical segment, runway looks, the lip sync battle, and overall thoughts on the episode. Takeaways The lip sync battle between Maya and Megami was underwhelming, with both queens failing to fully capture the essence of the song. Maya's self-proclaimed title of 'lip sync assassin' may be premature, as her performance in this episode was not as strong as she believes. Plasma's behavior and attitude continue to rub the hosts the wrong way, with her lack of struggle and self-assuredness making her unlikable. The role assignments for the rusicla challenge were not evenly distributed, leading to some queens feeling overshadowed and others feeling overlooked. The hosts question the classification of the rusical as a true musical, as it lacks live singing and relies heavily on lip syncing and dancing. The contestants showcased their talent and delivered strong performances in the rusical segment. The runway looks were exceptional, with the queens stepping up their game. The choreography segment with Adam Shankman was well-received, and Melissa McCarthy's appearance provided a nice touch. The episode highlighted the importance of being true to oneself and standing up for what one wants, as demonstrated by the contestants' actions. This week Zach and Sloane are joined by fan favorite and all-around supreme beauty Hannah Brown to discuss the problematic 2001 rom-com: The Wedding Planner. Hannah is currently planning her own wedding and the trio discuss her upcoming nuptials and whether or not she'd wear the hideous gown they stuck on poor Bridgette Wilson in this film. While the three pals stay on topic for most of the show of course there are a few derailments. Things get particularly heated when discussing meatball subs, which is certainly understandable. They also discuss the iconic show Four Weddings, Scandoval, and the tragic shame that is a 30-something woman without a man. For shame! Book Vs. Movie: HairsprayThe 1988 John Waters Movie Vs. the 2007 Adaptation“Musicals in March”The Margos continue their look at “Musicals in March” with the John Waters classic Hairspray, which started with the 1988 movie starring Rikki Lake, Divine, and Debby Harry. Based on his experiences of being a fan of the 1957-1964 Baltimore teen dance TV program--The Buddy Deane Show, Waters was a huge fan of R&B music. On the Buddy Deane show, the dancers were integrated, unlike Dick Clark's American Bandstand, which was based out of Philadelphia at the same time. Baltimore Magazine April 1985 by John Waters "Ladies & Gentleman: The Nicest Kids in Town!”Being a self-described “Super Fan” of the show, the director has a well-known career as an avant-garde-loving and bizarre artist who loves things that are in bad taste. His interest in something as wholesome as Buddy Deane made him think about writing a more accessible film about a group of teen dancers/local TV stars who fight racism and oppression with their love of music and dance. Given a modest budget of $2.8 million, the film was a box office hit, and the critics loved this new era of John Waters with even bigger hits in the 90s Cry-Baby & Serial Mom. Waters continues to write and direct his work and is very popular as an actor who appears in everything from Law & Order to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisles. In 2002, the musical version premiered in Seattle with music and lyrics from Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and the book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan. Hit is not a big enough word for this adaptation's success in the 2000s. It won eight Tony Awards (including Best Musical) in 2003 and broke all box office records in London's West End in 2008. The 2007 movie was directed by Adam Shankman and stars John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Christopher Walken and continues the big box office that started with the original 1988 film. What are the differences between the original and the latest version of the story of the AMAZING Tracy Turnblad? Which do we like best? This month we continue Season Four, a season for the fans, by looking at Adam Sandler's first and as of recording only collaboration with Walt Disney Pictures, the Adam Shankman directed “Bedtime Stories.”Will your curators be able to tell the difference between a organically grown Adam Sandler film and the genetically modified organism of a movie that Disney is so often accused of producing in the pursuit of the all-mighty dollar? What's more, if they are able to discern an abnormality in flavor or feel what effect, if any will that have on how they place amongst the star charts of their shared cinematic universe? The only way to know for certain is strap in and listen.Comments can be directed to AdamSandlerCinematicUniverse@gmail.com and don't forget to follow us on Twitter @TheASCU
