pWotD Episode 2763: Wicked (musical) Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 367,870 views on Sunday, 24 November 2024 our article of the day is Wicked (musical).Wicked is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. It is a loose adaptation of the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which in turn is based on L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its 1939 film adaptation. The musical is told from the perspective of two witches, Elphaba and Galinda, before and after Dorothy's arrival in Oz. The story explores the complex friendship between Elphaba (who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West) and Galinda (who becomes Glinda the Good). Their relationship is tested by their contrasting personalities, conflicting viewpoints, shared love interest, reactions to the corrupt rule of the Wonderful Wizard, and ultimately, Elphaba's tragic fall.Produced by Universal Stage Productions with producers Marc Platt, Jon B. Platt, and David Stone, director Joe Mantello and choreographer Wayne Cilento, the original production of Wicked premiered on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre in October 2003, after completing pre-Broadway tryouts at San Francisco's Curran Theatre in May and June of that year. Its original stars included Idina Menzel as Elphaba, Kristin Chenoweth as Galinda, Norbert Leo Butz as Fiyero, and Joel Grey as the Wizard. The original Broadway production won a total of three Tony Awards and seven Drama Desk Awards, while its original cast album received a Grammy Award. The success of the Broadway production has spawned many productions worldwide, including a long-running West End production. Wicked has broken box-office records around the world, holding weekly-gross-takings records in Los Angeles, Chicago, St. Louis, and London. In the week ending January 2, 2011, the London, Broadway, and both North American touring productions simultaneously broke their respective records for the highest weekly gross. In the final week of 2013, the Broadway production broke this record again, earning $3.2 million. In 2016, Wicked surpassed $1 billion in total Broadway revenue, joining The Phantom of the Opera and The Lion King as the only Broadway shows to do so. In 2017, Wicked surpassed The Phantom of the Opera as Broadway's second-highest grossing musical, trailing only The Lion King.A two-part film adaptation was directed by Jon M. Chu and starred Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Galinda, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard. The first part was released on November 22, 2024, with the second part to premiere on November 21, 2025.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:39 UTC on Monday, 25 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Wicked (musical) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Matthew.

A two-time Tony Award-winning actor and singer, Norbert Leo Butz opens up about his childhood, the challenges he faced pursuing a career in acting, and the remarkable twists of fate that brought him to Broadway. Hailing from a large family of 11 siblings, he shares how the importance of education was instilled to them by his parents. Despite his family's support for school plays, his strict upbringing and limited resources led Norbert to sneakily pursue his love for acting. Norbert eventually had to confess to his father about attending a different college and studying to become an actor, a moment that ultimately led to his parents becoming his biggest supporters. He recounts his serendipitous entry into Broadway with "Rent," joining the cast as a cover for the roles of Roger and Mark–a right place, right time moment for him. He also talks about how he dealt with the pandemic through music, which eventually resulted in releasing his 4th solo album “King of Hearts” co-written with her daughter, Clara Davis. Growing up, Norbert developed a sense of self-reliance and resilience that shaped his approach to hard work and dedication. He encourages aspiring actors to avoid seeking validation through advice and instead cultivate self-awareness and a love for their craft. Norbert Leo Butz is a four-time Tony Award nominee having won two of those four nominations for his performances in “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”, and “Catch Me If You Can”. He made his Broadway debut in “Rent” in 1996 before moving on to a slew of additional Broadway credits, including “Wicked”, “The Last Five Years”, and “Big Fish”, among many others. He's also an accomplished TV and film actor with credits such as “Justified: City Primeval”, “The Good Wife”, “Blue Bloods”, Fosse/Verdon”, Dan in Real Life”, “Better Nate Than Ever” and the most recent, “The Exorcist: The Believer”. Director David Gordon Green returns to ruin another beloved horror franchise. In addition to our review of that film, we discuss Friedkin's The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, an adaptation of a 50s play (originally a novel and also a film) set in the modern day. In 1973 a movie force of horror was introduced to the world in the form of The Exorcist. Fifty years later, Hollywood tries again with a direct follow-up to that movie, referred to by many as the scariest movie ever made. This new movie is called The Exorcist Believer and it may be scary or just scary that this is the best they could come up with, even with fifty years to work with. This time the plot revolves around two young girls who go missing for three days but when found, have obviously brought something evil back with them. Soon enough, the girls are plunged into the horrors of being possessed by a demon. Time to call an exorcist! Is it worth checking out this new offering of movie devilry or stay the Hell away? Check out this spoiler-free review to find out. This stars Ellen Burstyn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jennifer Nettles, Ann Dowd, Raphael Sbarge, Norbert Leo Butz, Olivia O'Neill, Lidya Jewett, Chloe Traicos, E.J. Bonilla, Antoni Corone. Comenzamos con una versión muy especial de “El pequeño tamborilero” con la niña Soleá y Farru para terminar con otra curiosa versión que hemos encontrado de una antigua actuación en televisión española con Marisol y Mocedades cantando “Happy Christmas”. 00h 00’00” Presentación 00h 01’53” Cabecera 00h 02’31” El pequeño tamborilero – Solea y Farru 00h 08’13” At Christmas – Hanson 00h 13’19” Happy days – Backstreet boys 00h 16’36” Jingle bells rock – Kd Lang 00h 18’22” Joe and Mary – Bryan Adams 00h 21’40” Bringin’ back Christmas – Ryan Reynolds 00h 25’31” Christmas is my favourite time of the year - Norbert Leo Butz & Aaron Tveit 00h 28’22” Comin’ for X-mas – Usher 00h 32’19” If every day was like Christmas – Elvis Presley 00h 35’08” Little Christmas tree – Michael Jackson 00h 38’42” A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square – Nat King Cole & Gloria Estefan 00h 43’39” Christmas love – Justin Bieber 00h 46’54” Let’s get Christmas going – Bryan Adams 00h 49’56” Lonely Christmas – Bryson Tiller, Justin Bieber & Poo Bear 00h 53’38” Merry Christmas – Ed Sheeran & Elton John 00h 57’02” A este lado del cristal – La oreja de Van Gogh 00h 58’18” Let it snow – Jamie Cullum & Michael Legrand 01h 01’29” Mary did you know – Clay Aitken 01h 04’45” Oh Santa – Mariah Carey, Ariana Grande & Jennifer Hudson 01h 08’00” Santa Claus is back in town – Richard Marx 01h 10’30” Little drummer girl – Alicia Keys 01h 14’54” Merry Christmas – Bryan Adams 01h 17’18” Christmas day – Dido 01h 21’14” Santa Claus is coming to town – Sebastian Yatra 01h 24’37” A soldier’s Christmas – Gerónimo Rauch 01h 29’15” Christmas time – Bryan Adams 01h 33’16” One child – Mariah Carey 01h 37’37” Someday at Christmas – Stevie Wonder & Andra Ray 01h 41’01” The Christmas song – Johnny Mathis & Billy Joel 01h 44’48” Little things – Abba 01h 47’54” Christmas calling – Norah Jones 01h 51’10” River – Madeline Peyroux & Kd Lang 01h 56’24” Será Navidad – Blas Cantó 02h 00’43” The Christmas song – Stevie Wonder & India Arie 02h 03’10” I saw momma kissing Santa Claus – Amy Winehouse 02h 05’14” Same old lang syne – Backstreet boys 02h 09’34” The happy elf – Harry Connick, jr. 02h 13’13” Under the mistletoe – Justin Bieber 02h 16’13” The piano man at Christmas – Jamie Cullum 02h 20’11” The bell that couldn’t jingle – Burt Bacharach 02h 22’39” Christmas time is the air again – Mariah Carey 02h 25’39” Merry Christmas, Happy new year – Ingrid Michaelson & Zooey Deschanel 02h 29’10” Happy Christmas – Marisol & Mocedades

Norbert Leo Butz stars in “The Girl From Plainville,” now streaming on Hulu as Conrad Roy, the father of Coco (Colton Ryan). In this true tragic story, he commits suicide egged on by encouraging texts from his girlfriend Michelle Carter (Elle Fanning). In our conversation, Butz talks about bonding with Ryan over their shared love of theater, how being a father of daughters played into the role, diving deep into the emotional moments of his character, and offers his unique view of parenting and suicide. He tells host Robin Milling, “The stigma and the shame of parental failure is a false narrative that needs to be extracted from the culture. I like that the film takes a stab that mental illness is a human problem and is so multi-faceted. No one person takes the blame.”
