The very first time I saw WICKED was when the national tour came to Cleveland in February 2008. The actress playing Glinda at the time was Katie Rose Clarke. As fate would have it, I was recently offered the chance to speak with her and Steven Jamail about their brand new song connected to their upbringing in Houston, Texas titled 'Margarita Christmas.' So naturally, I said yes. Katie Rose Clarke made her Broadway debut almost 20 years ago when she took over for Kelli O'Hara as Clara Johnson in THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, where she even got to be a part of the PBS broadcast. Her subsequent credits include Hannah Campbell in ALLEGIANCE with George Takei and Lea Salonga, Ellen in the 2017 revival of MISS SAIGON, and most recently as Beth in the Tony-winning revival of MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG starring Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, and Lindsay Mendez. Not to mention that she also happens to be Broadway's longest-running Glinda in WICKED. Steven Jamail is a composer, producer, musical director who has done arrangements and orchestrations that have been performed on Oprah, Howard Stern, Rachel Ray, The Rosie O'Donnell Show, Martha Stewart, The NBC Tree Lighting at Rockefeller Center, and the American Songbook series at Lincoln Center. He has also created arrangements and played for Bebe Winans, Rosie O'Donnell, Jessie Mueller, Jeremy Abbott, and Adam Rippon. He serves as the regular music director for Orfeh, Teal Wicks, Danielle Hope, and Lea Michele, having just recently orchestrated and conducted Ms. Michele's lauded Carnegie Hall debut and Life in Music Tour. He is the Associate Artistic Director of O'Donnell's foundation, Rosie's Theater Kids in NYC. *I do not own any of the content used in this video. Since he made his debut as Marius in Les Miserables, Rob has established an enviable career as one of the West End's finest leading men taking on roles like Fabrizio in The Light in the Piazza and Joe Cable in South Pacific. As well as being highly sought after actor though, Rob Houchen is also one of the most exciting young producers after establishing West End Does / Chorus Presents, staging sell-out concerts at venues like Cadogan Hall featuring some of the West End's most popular stars. One highlight was producing a 30th anniversary concert of personal favourite: Children of Eden with the blessing of composer Stephen Schwartz and also brought together original cast members: Ruthie Henshall and Ray Shell. Here, Rob also made his directing debut and audiences got an insight into another talent of the multi-talented actor. Now, he is currently preparing to star in a new musical theatre concert: At Last, It's Summer, where he will also be making his London Palladium debut before also returning to Cadogan Hall for West End Does: Hollywood The Sequel. In this special interview, Rob Houchen opened about the last decade in his career on the West End, both as an actor and as a producer. On this episode, we hear from sopranos Rebecca Caine and Diana Newman, principals in THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA. Rebecca plays the role of Margaret Johnson, and Diana plays the role of Margaret's daughter Clara. This is the first time they've worked together, and watching them onstage, you'd think they were old friends. Rebecca shares how much she loves playing a woman of a “certain age,” and Diana talks about how she approaches Clara's neurodivergence. You'll hear more about how the perfect costume helps get an actor into character, how much Rebecca and Diana love being onstage with each other and their castmates, and how the Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe versus Wade influenced how they thought about this story. This interview was recorded on July 7, 2022. Canadian soprano Rebecca Caine has had a career divided between Opera and Musical Theatre, making her West End debut at age 19 as Laurey in OKLAHOMA! She then sang the role of Eliza in MY FAIR LADY on the National Tour. While at Glyndebourne Opera Festival, she was asked to join the Royal Shakespeare Company where she created the role of Cosette in LES MISERABLES. She was also part of the original cast of PHANTOM OF THE OPERA as Christine. Her long career continues to span the realms opera, musical theatre, straight theatre, and cabaret in the UK, United States, and around the world.   American soprano DIANA NEWMAN brings “fresh and intense” performances to opera houses and concert stages across the United States and Europe. She has recently appeared with the Dallas Opera and the Metropolitan Opera. A recent graduate of the Lyric Opera of Chicago's Ryan Opera Center, she returned this season for the company's Ring Cycle. Diana was also recently a soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl for AMERICA IN SPACE in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. BROADWAY NATION

In today’s episode I focus on the Broadway Musicals of the 21st Century. Perhaps surprisingly, the current generation of Broadway creators has re-embraced and reinvigorated both the “Musical Comedy” and the “Musical Play” in ways that I think would make Rodgers & Hammerstein very proud. At the same time they have introduced something sort of new – the “Jukebox Musical”. In the process, and with a major assist from the Walt Disney Company, the Broadway Musical has achieved new heights of prosperity, popularity and cultural relevance in the 21st Century. The new-fashioned, 21st Century musical comedies highlighted in this episode include: Hairspray, Avenue Q, Monty Python’s Spamalot, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Legally Blonde, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, The Drowsy Chaperone, Curtains, The Book of Mormon, Kinky Boots, A Christmas Story, A Gentlemen’s Guide to Love And Murder, ELF, Something Rotten, The Prom, Beetlejuice, and the upcoming Mrs. Doubtfire.       The most recent major innovation in musicals are shows that are often called “Jukebox Musicals”. This new kind of musical emerged at the dawn of the 21st Century and has become enormously popular and somewhat controversial. What exactly is a “Jukebox Musical”? My definition is that they are musicals that tell their story using a collection of previously existing songs rather than songs that were written specifically for the show. Most often these are pop songs that were not originally conceived for the theater. There are really two different kinds of jukebox musicals: biographical musical that dramatizes the life and times of a legendary performer, songwriter, group, or band and is built around the music and lyrics they created and/or made famous. - and shows like Mamma Mia! that employ pre-existing hit songs to tell new, original stories. Finally, that brings us to the “Musical Play”. This durable form is still going strong!   The first hit “musical play” of the 21st Century was Wicked. With music & lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, and a book by Winnie Holtsman, this musical is adapted from Gregory Maguire’s best-selling 1995 novel titled Wicked: The Life And Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. So far, Wicked has been playing 17 years on Broadway and is the 5th longest running show of all time.  Wicked has been followed by a string of vibrant, popular and acclaimed musical plays that do not shy away from tackling important and provocative subject matter. These include The Color Purple, Spring Awakening, The Light In The Piazza, Grey Gardens, In The Heights, Billy Elliott, Next To Normal, Memphis, Once, Fun Home, Hamilton, Waitress, Dear Evan Hanson, Come From Away, The Great Comet, The Band’s Visit and Hadestown. Not one of them is a conventional love story. Seven of them deal with issues racial equity, social justice and inclusion. Four of them deal with mental health issues. Six of them include queer leading characters. Almost all of them focus on transgressive women who reject and break the rules of society. And almost all deal with the challenges of forming and maintaining a community. And these three themes – Racial and social justice, Transgressive women and community -- dominate the 21st century musical comedies as well. None of this should be a surprise because -- as we will discover on the next episode of Broadway Nation -- these have been the primary and most prevalent themes of the Broadway musical throughout its history. One of these 3 themes are at the center of almost every musical, and they are what have made this art form so powerful, popular, and subversive. What do The Kennedys, planet Earth, 2012, and Shakespeare all have in common? They all have conspiracy theories attached to them. Whether you believe the Earth is flat, or that the world was actually going to end back in 2012, it's a great wonder why conspiracy theories happen in the first place. Who's prone to conspiracies? Why do we look to other means to make sense of the world around us? One of the conspiracies we hear all the time at Independent Shakespeare Co. is the question, "Do you actually believe William Shakespeare wrote all of those plays? Or do you think it was someone else?" So let's talk about it. Ted Sperling and Guettel’s jaunty orchestrations add to the slightly disorienting but wholly fascinating harmonies and instrumentation."- FURTHER READING -Wiki - Musical, Film, NovellaIMDbiTunesSpotify- CELEBRITY SHOUTOUTS -Elizabeth Spencer, Craig Lucas, Adam Guettel, Victoria Clark, Kelli O'Hara, Matthew Morrison, Michael Berresse, Sarah Uriarte Berry, Aaron LazarLike us on Facebook! For this week's episode, we trace The Light in the Piazza's fifty-year journey from its first incarnation as a novella by Elizabeth Spencer to a musical idea handed down through one of musical theater's most prominent families.  We follow the musical, written by Adam Guettel and Craig Lucas, as it takes shape at the Sundance Theatre Lab, has its first production at the Intiman Theatre in Seattle, is restructured for the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, before making its way to Broaday at Lincoln Center. The show would be nominated for 13 Tony Awards and win 8 of them. It would make stars of its two leading ladies and go down as one of the most important new works of our time.  This episode features brand new interviews with composer Adam Guettel, book writer Craig Lucas, actors Victoria Clark, Kelli O'Hara, and Celia Keenan-Bolger, director Bartlett Sher, and Lincoln Center Artistic Director Andre Bishop

A little emotion goes a long way. And music is one of the best communicators of emotion, as Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Billy Joel can tell you. The richer the music, the deeper the emotional response to it. Which is why emotions combined with music can be so powerful, and so dangerous. When 2005’s The Light in the Piazza first materialized on Broadway, there was much talk that the show—a musical adaptation of Elizabeth Spencer’s 1960 novel—marked a return to the kind of gorgeous scores and lyrical drama that fueled the golden age of Broadway. Ignoring decades of rock and pop influences on Broadway, composer Adam Guettel created a score that was lush, orchestral, complex, operatic and deeply, brazenly romantic. Some people hated it. After years of easy, amiable, non-challenging throwaway tunes, ‘The Light in the Piazza’ just sounded so . . . old fashioned. Because of that, others fell in love with it. Like music, and definitely like love itself, its all a matter of taste. In a remarkably strong new production at Spreckels Performing Arts Center, director Gene Abravaya—taking a real risk in tackling something this difficult—has more than met the challenge, assembling a cast of first-rate singers and a stellar chamber orchestra, for what is quite possibly the most beautiful, satisfying, musically competent, and artistically successful show Spreckels Theater Company has ever staged. And that some of the cast sings and speaks (convincingly) in Italian, that only adds to the impressiveness of the achievement. Whether all of this is excellence and musical skill is enough to draw an audience remains to be seen, though positive word-of-mouth will certainly help. Based on a book few have read, this is no Mary Poppins. But for audiences loudly clamoring to see something that dares to venture beyond the confortable familiarity of the same old overdone standard musicals, here is your chance to prove it. Set in Italy in the 1950s, the story follows two visiting Americans, the wealthy southerner Margaret—brilliantly played by Eileen Morris—and her wide-eyed daughter Clara—played by Jennifer Mitchell, whose pure singing voice and expressive face make every emotion and discovery as clear as a bell. When Clara falls in love, at first sight, with the youthful and exuberant Frabrizio—Jacob Bronson—the stage is a set for a series of clashes between Margaret and Fabrizio, between Margaret and Clara, and between Margaret’s own desire to protect her daughter, and to also allow her the love she never has the courage to claim for herself. The clever, entertaining book by Craig Lucas—who wrote Prelude to a Kiss and Amélie: The Musical—does include scenes spoken in Italian, giving a sense of the lost-in-translation confusion that impedes Clara and Fabrizio at every turn. In one delightful scene in the second act, Fabrizio’s mother—Barbara McFadden, who’s wonderful—drops the Italian to explain in English what her husband—an excellent Steven Kent Barker—has been saying to their other son and his wife—played respectively by Tariq Malik and Amy Marie Webber. That said, the Italian sequences are so well staged, it’s pretty clear what’s going on. With some fine design and technical support, and a strong ensemble cast, Spreckels’ Light in the Piazza is a truly impressive show, dripping with music and the dangers and allure of love—and that’s worth experiencing in any language. 'The Light in the Piazza' runs Friday–Sunday through Oct. 25 at Spreckels Performing Arts Center. Spreckels online.com
