My guest today is Joshua Rosenblum, author of Closer than Ever — The Unique Six-Decade Songwriting Partnership of Richard Maltby, Jr. and David Shire. This terrific new book chronicles the sixty-six-year (and counting) partnership of two of the most gifted songwriters of our time, giving full behind-the-scenes accounts of their musicals interspersed with deep-dive analyses of standout individual numbers. Among the well-known Broadway figures who feature prominently in the Maltby/Shire story are Stephen Sondheim, Hal Prince, Michael Stewart, Francis Ford Coppola, Susan Stroman, John Weidman, Charles Strouse, Garth Drabinsky, Jason Robert Brown, and Jonathan Tunick. Using his experiences as a Broadway conductor, music journalist, and professor of musical theater composition, as well as his long-term personal and professional acquaintance with both Maltby and Shire, Joshua Rosenblum is uniquely suited to chronicle their lives, careers, and creative output. The songwriters, both of whom are engaging and articulate in describing what they do, are quoted liberally throughout the book in exclusive interviews, creating the impression that one is spending time with two inspiring creative artists who happen to be great company.   Joshua Rosenblum teaches Composing for Musical Theater at Yale University and Conducting at New York University. As a composer/lyricist, he wrote the scores to the off-Broadway musicals Fermat's Last Tango, Bush is Bad, and Einstein's Dreams (four Drama Desk Nominations). He has conducted fourteen Broadway and off-Broadway shows and has performed as pianist with the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall, the City Center Encores! Orchestra, and the American Symphony. A longtime contributor of reviews and features to Opera News, Rosenblum is a summa cum laude graduate of Yale College and holds a master's degree in Piano from the Yale School of Music. Hi this is David Armstrong. You may be wondering where I and Broadway Nation have been over the past few weeks. As you will hear, I have been battling a wicked case of bronchitis and today is the first day in ten days that I have been able to talk even enough to croak out this brief message. At the end of the summer, I had been planning to take a few weeks off from podcasting anyway, and this bronchitis has just jumpstarted that break. So here's the plan: On September 19 Broadway Nation will return for an exciting new season featuring a fascinating line-up of authors who have written some amazing new books. We will start with author Thomas Hischak who will kick us off with a discussion of Song Of The Season — Outstanding Broadway Songs since 1891. In the weeks that follow, you will meet Laurie Winer talking about Oscar Hammerstein and the Invention of The Musical, Doug Reside on his book Fixing the Musical — How Technologies Shaped The Broadway Repertory, Trevor Boffone who has written about TikTok Broadway. Dustyn Martincich and Pheobe Rumsay will discuss Dance In Musical Theatre — A History of the Body In Movement, Christopher Connelly on Helen Morgan: The original Torch Singer and Ziegfeld's Last Star, and Joshua Rosenblum and his book Closer Than Ever — The Unique Six-Decade Songwriting Partnership of Richard Maltby, Jr. and David Shire. And that's just the beginning! As always Albert Evans will join me for some deep dives into Broadway's past and, no doubt, there will be previews of my upcoming book. I guarantee it will all be worth the wait. In the meantime, you are invited to join more than 2600 fans of this podcast in the Broadway Nation Facebook Group where every day you can find posts and videos about the Broadway musical and Immigrant, Jewish, Queer and Black artist who invented it.  See you soon! This is his third Broadway show, and not only does Bobby discuss his approach to Cousin Kevin, but also talks very openly about what it's like to lead a show where most of the cast are Chicago transplants making their Broadway debut.  Bobby is currently reprising his performance in TOMMY from the Goodman Theatre's 30th anniversary production. Today, it's back on Broadway in a dazzling all-new production, Tony Award®️ nominated for Best Musical Revival, that feels more relevant than ever. “Everything about this exhilarating production shakes you awake and leaves you buzzed: Knockout singing, superbly inventive stagecraft and a star-making performance from 24-year-old Ali Louis Bourzgui as the Pinball Wizard that's the most exciting New York stage debut in years.” (NY Post) “Broadway has nothing else like this wizardry going on, not this season and nothing I know of for next season. In 1991, Broadway witnessed one of its most spectacular falls from grace with Nick & Nora, a musical adaptation of the beloved The Thin Man novel and film series. With a dream team that included Arthur Laurents, the creative force behind classics like West Side Story and Gypsy, Charles Strouse, the prolific composer of Bye Bye Birdie and Annie, and Richard Maltby Jr., known for Ain't Misbehavin', this show had all the makings of a hit. The star-studded cast featured Barry Bostwick and Joanna Gleason, among others. However, despite the promise on paper, Nick & Nora faced an unprecedented series of delays, setbacks, and ultimately, a one-week run. This episode sheds light on why the show faced so many challenges, from those who were there every step of the way. We explore the explosive clashes, financial woes, and behind-the-scenes drama that led to Nick & Nora's abrupt closure, serving as a cautionary tale that even Broadway's brightest stars can find themselves lost in the shadows. You're gonna have "the time of your life" as hosts Bobby and Kristina discuss 1996's Big The Musical on episode sixteen of My Favorite Flop.   ABOUT BIG THE MUSICAL Based on the 1988 film of the same name starring Tom Hanks, Big The Musical tells the story Josh Baskin, a 12-year-old boy who grows up overnight after being granted a wish by a Zoltar Speaks machine at a carnival. With the aid of his best friend, Billy, he must cope with his new adulthood while finding the machine so that he can wish himself back and more. The musical features a book by John Weidman, music by David Shire, and lyrics by Richard Maltby, Jr. Composer David Shire was inspired to adapt Big for the stage after his wife, actress Didi Conn, watched the film on pay-per-view in her hotel room one night and told him how great a musical it would make. Over the next six years, he was able to amass a team that included frequent collaborator lyricist David Maltby, Jr., book writer John Weidman, director Mike Ockrent, and choreographer Susan Stroman, all of whom were not quite convinced that the musical would work, but continued to contribute to the creative process anyway until it eventually ended up on Broadway. Big The Musical was one of the first major blockbuster films to be translated to the musical stage. While the practice has become much more common today, the Broadway community was far less welcoming of this at the time of its premiere. Despite the musical's strengths, it struggled to find an audience, and after failing to land a Tony nomination for Best Musical, it closed as a puzzling $12 million dollar loss of its $10 million dollar investment. A heavily-revised national tour traveled the country two years later under the helm of show doctor Eric Dr. Shaeffer and was a big success and almost returned to Broadway. The show made its UK and Ireland in 2016 in Dublin starring "Strictly Come Dancing" winner and The Wanted vocalist Jay McGuiness as Josh. The production transferred to London's West End at the Dominion Theatre in 2019 with McGuiness reprising his role.   Original Broadway Cast Daniel Jenkins as Josh Baskin Crista Moore as Susan Lawrence Brett Tabisel as Billy Lizzy Mack as Cynthia Benson Barbara Walsh as Mrs. Baskin John Sloman as Mr. Baskin Patrick Levis as Young Josh Baskin Jon Cypher as MacMillan Gene Weygandt as Paul

The Producer's Perspective Podcast with Ken Davenport

Richard Maltby Jr. is a theatre director and producer, lyricist, and screenwriter. He conceived and directed the only two musical revues to win the Tony Award for Best Musical: Ain't Misbehavin'  and Fosse. Other Broadway works include Baby (Director/Lyricist), Blood Knot (Producer), Song and Dance (Director/Co-lyricist), Miss Saigon (Lyricist), Nick & Nora (Lyricist), Ring of Fire (Creator/Director), The Pirate Queen (Writer/Lyricist). Off-Broadway works include Closer Than Ever, and The Story of My Life. He also wrote the screenplay for the film Miss Potter (2007) starring Renée Zellweger and Ewan McGregor. We talk about all the huge hats he has worn over the years, as well as . . . Now what? (What to do when your first show out is a big fat success) Why the collaboration process on Miss Saigon was one of the favorites of his career. How the revue has morphed into the jukebox musical, and what he thinks of the current lot. An old idea for new writers to get attention that still works today. What he thinks of the new “style” of musical theater. This week’s episode is brought to you by theaterextras.com, seat-filling audience development organization that arranges COMPLIMENTARY tickets for its members when a performance or event is in previews, under publicized, expecting the attendance of reviewers or celebrities, or would like the benefits of a full house.  Keep up with me: @KenDavenportBway www.theproducersperspective.com Learn more about your ad choices.
