In this week's two-part episode, we explore the work of the "phantasmagoric couturier" Leigh Bowery, who has been described as "artist and art object, a thing to see, to experience." Primarily using dress and his own body as his medium of expression, Bowery's work was equally at home in contemporary art institutions and in the London club scene during the 1980s and 1990s. Tate Modern curator Fiontán Moran joins us this week to speak about the exhibition Leigh Bowery! which is on view now at the Tate through August 31, 2025. The Week in Art
Leigh Bowery at Tate Modern, Ukraine and art—three years on, Max Beckmann and the Gothic Modern

Tate Modern this week opened a vast exhibition exploring the life and work of the maverick Australian-born performance artist, fashion designer and self-styled “club monster”, Leigh Bowery, as well as the variety of cultural figures in his orbit in London. It coincides with other related London shows: one analysing the fashion work of Bowery and his collaborators and peers at the Fashion and Textile Museum, and another at the National Portrait Gallery about the style and culture magazine The Face, which emerged around the same time as Bowery set foot in the UK capital in the early 1980s. Ben Luke reviews the shows with Louisa Buck, The Art Newspaper's contemporary art correspondent. Three years on from Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and amid fraught international diplomacy following the US's abrupt shift in approach to the war under President Trump, we speak to Sophia Kishkovsky, our international correspondent who has widely reported on Russia and Ukraine, about how Ukraine's art world is responding to this new era. And this episode's Work of the Week is actually a pair of works made more than 400 years apart called The Women's Bath. The first is a woodcut based on a drawing by Albrecht Dürer from around 1500; the second a painting responding to it, made by the German artist Max Beckmann in 1919. They feature in an exhibition opening this week at the National Museum in Oslo, Gothic Modern: From Darkness to Light. Cynthia Osiecki, a curator at the museum, tells us more.Leigh Bowery!, Tate Modern, until 31 August; Outlaws: Fashion Renegades of 80s London, Fashion and Textile Museum, London, until 9 March; The Face Magazine: Culture Shift, National Portrait Gallery, London, until 18 May.Gothic Modern: From Darkness to Light, National Museum, Oslo, 28 February-15 June.Subscription offer: enjoy 3 issues of The Art Newspaper for just £3/$3/€3—subscribe before 21 March to start your subscription with the April bumper issue including our Visitor Figures 2024 report and an EXPO Chicago special. Hanan Besovic, the content creator and fashion commentator behind @ideservecouture, shares his unconventional journey and outsider perspective into the fashion world. Moving from Croatia to the US, Besovic garnered a significant following on his platform during the COVID lockdown, using it to channel and convey his perspective on fashion—which he comes by through sheer obsessive passion. His honest and timely critiques often challenge traditional norms in the industry. Besovic details the evolving role of influencers, advocating for discernment in evaluating their contributions to fashion discourse. Expressing admiration for Gen Z's assertiveness and knowledge, he navigates the industry with a focus on community-building and networking, while maintaining an authenticity that he sees as all too often lacking on social media. His overwhelming fashion insight gives him a unique perspective laced with nuance, allowing him to see what's contemporary now as both the influence and image of businesswoman Kim Kardashian, as well as pervasive mediocrity that comes from the industry's exclusivity and commercialism. Episode Highlights: Serendipitous start: Introduced to fashion in 2010 after seeing a McQueen show, Besovic transitioned from hospitality to fashion after a move from Croatia to the US and following a layoff from hotel work during the pandemic. Following a passion: Though he treated fashion as a hobby, joking that he failed algebra because of his obsession with Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert, he found a role in the scene during the COVID lockdown. Superfan: Citing Plato's Atlantis and the Horn of Plenty, Leigh Bowery lips, and Dior silhouettes, Besovic recounts how McQueen's show was “a perfect introduction to fashion because I got a history of fashion in 13 minutes.” Ending up on a panel for Show Studio, through which he had first been introduced to the fashion world, was a full-circle moment for Besovic. @ideservecouture: Having been called a content creator, a fashion critic, and an influencer, Besovic sees himself as a commentator, remarking on how the fashion world has changed to include more critiques like those pushing for body diversity.  On influencer culture: Besovic sees the importance of having a discerning view on social media, where unresearched or misinformed influencer opinions on fashion proliferate alongside those of influencers who have dug deeper into the contemporary moment and its historical roots. Gen Z: Likening the feeling of maintaining an outsider perspective among the insiders to those that look down on Gen Z, Besovic notes that he admires the younger generation's activeness and knowledge of their value. Organic growth: Quoting a drag queen, Besovic says that “goals are preplanned disappointments” and prefers relying on organic personal—and social media—growth. Navigating the industry: Besovic's advice to young designers is to work more toward networking and building community, as he does on his platform. “Nice, genuine, and down to earth”: Besovic's contemporaries don't have the same egos as most in the industry, and Besovic himself is happy to forgo sources of status, like physically attending the shows.  “I like to know the reality of the things.”: When asked whether the world needs the 24/7 dream or fantasy of fashion on social media, Besovic insists that the world needs to know instead that everything's not as perfect as it looks. When clothes speak for themselves: Besovic says storytelling is crucial to a collection, except when garments are too good to need a narrative. Dream job: Besovic thinks he would be a good consultant for brands like Givenchy, which don't understand their worth or history.  Polarities: For Besovic, the Kardashians are what's contemporary now (still), because “no one can dispute how smart of a businesswoman she [Kim] is.” On the other hand, additionally, what is contemporary now is “mediocrity, it's commercialism, it's lack of creativity.”

‘The legacy of Leigh Bowery, king of queer', written by Dutch journalist Bamber Delver, looks at the the career of this outrageous shapeshifter of the 80's/90's. Decades after his death, Leigh Bowery's influence is omnipresent. From Alexander McQueen to Cirque du Soleil, from Lady Gaga to the drag queens of RuPaul. In this book 15 artists (inc. Le Pustra, Trevor Messersmith, Paola Idrontino, Luis Peralta, Saskia Kemperman, The Huxleys, Kat Joplin and Venus Envy) from around the globe admire his guts, his looks and fashion-philosophy which is nowadays called ‘queer': no boundaries, no gender, no age, no sexuality, no restrictions of the human-form. Ann Holt, with whom Leigh travelled to London at 17, shares her memories. Leigh's sister Brownyn tells about her childhood with Leigh. Also in the book is an interview from 1989 where Bamber interviewed the artist Leigh Bowery, as well as lots of never-seen-before photos of three of Leigh's creations. The book presents several timelines, of Leigh's life and afterlife: his legacy. Like the annual Aussie-party Bowerytopia and the theatre named after him: the Bowery Theatre, Australia (native country of Bowery). A variety of performers pay tribute to Leigh, verbally and visually. The book comes in different versions. The hardcover in print is a real treat. Leigh died in 1994, at just 33, but his creative legacy is bigger than ever. We meet living legend Sue Tilley and artist Rui Miguel Leitão Ferreira!!!Sue Tilley (b. 1957), also known as Big Sue, is an artist, artist's model and writer. Most notably, she modelled for painter Lucian Freud. Tilley collaborated, and was best friends, with performance artist and club promoter Leigh Bowery. In 1997, she published Leigh Bowery: The life and times of an Icon, a biography. Freud painted several large nude portraits of Tilley, the first being Evening in the Studio (1993). Benefits Supervisor Sleeping, painted in 1995, was sold at auction for £35 million ($56 million USD). We discuss a brand new exhibition at The Sunday Painter in South London - the first painting show of Portuguese artist Rui Miguel Leitão Ferreira (b.1977) in the UK. Curated by Daniel Malarkey, the exhibition sees Ferreira further develop his self-portrait series Posing for Sue. The works on show explore Ferreira's relationship with close friend and mentor Sue Tilley – widely known for her long-standing professional relationship with Lucian Freud – whilst subtly manipulating and subverting the complex dialogue between the three subjects traditionally involved in portraiture: the portrayed, the artist and the observer. The artist first met Tilley at a charity event in 2013. An in-depth exploration into the experiences of life models within the realm of fine art had recently prompted Ferreira to begin modelling himself, a disquieting endeavour that left the artist feeling increasingly vulnerable and directionless when it came to his own practice. Ferreira found solace in Tilley's gaze, eventually leading the two to forge a close friendship. Inspired by the powerful artist-model dynamic between Freud and Tilley – whose iconic four-year professional relationship saw Freud produce perhaps some of his most acclaimed and psychologically charged nude portraits – Ferreira sought to capture the intimacy of time spent between artist and sitter through the specificity of paint.Rather than simply mirroring the pair's relationship, however, the Posing for Sue series attempts to subvert art history's long established traditions of portraiture – one of the oldest enduring art forms – by reconsidering the roles of all those involved. Ferreira begins his artistic process by filming a video piece in which he undresses in front of Tilley, with each recording capturing the collaborators reacting and responding to each other's physical presence. Ferreira then paints from carefully chosen film stills, allowing him to analyse the process in motion rather than focusing on one particular viewpoint. By undressing in front of Tilley and remaining completely exposed throughout each filmed session, the source of the gaze, usually strictly maintained by the artist, is intentionally displaced to the model.Posing for Sue explores the notion of shared experience between artist and sitter, tapping into the deep-rooted human desire to capture the complexities of expression via mimetic representation. Through the act of being observed in his most vulnerable state – both by the model and by the viewer – Ferreira utilises his body as an instrument to explore the heights and depths of the human psyche.Follow @SueTilley1 and @RuiMiguelLeitaoFerreiraVisit @TheSundayPainter for info on the new exhibition and their website: https://thesundaypainter.co.uk/ Hosted on Acast. The film director joins BoF editor-at-large Tim Blanks to discuss how he uses his fashion and music roots to stage powerful experiences including from Abba Voyage and recent Dior Men and Fendi Couture shows. Background: Film and creative director Bailie Walsh cut his teeth working in London during the nineties and early aughts alongside talents like Boy George, Leigh Bowery and Alexander McQueen. While Walsh calls himself a film director, editor-at-large Tim Blanks, who hosts him on the latest BoF Podcast, describes him as more of a magician. He was behind the hologram of Kate Moss featured in McQueen's show “Widows of Culloden” in 2006 that went on to be showcased in both London's V&A Museum and New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. More recently, he's captivated audiences with his immersive virtual concert, Abba Voyage, in London, and his work with Kim Jones, who tapped Walsh to help stage Dior Menswear and Fendi Couture shows in January. Walsh approaches his projects with the goal of completely immersing his audience — and often pushes the limits to do so. “What I love about being creative or having the opportunity to be creative is a challenge,” said Walsh. Key Insights: Walsh helped infuse Dior Menswear Fall/Winter 2023 runway with TS Eliot's poem “The Waste Land.” Models drifted past massive screens featuring Gwendoline Christie and Robert Pattinson reading the poem, spliced with music from composer Max Richter. Creatives need to live on the edge of fear, according to Walsh. “You have to be scared if you're a creative person … you're entering into a journey that you haven't before,” he said. “That's the point of doing it.” Music has been a thread throughout Walsh's career. He's made videos for Boy George, crafted Abba's hologram-filled Voyage concert but also used music as a source of inspiration for his Daniel Craig-fronted film “Flashbacks of a Fool.”Walsh spent over two years thinking about how to play with illusion and reality to create Abba Voyage. Throughout the display, there are costume changes, chatter between the artists and shadowy figures still present when the lights are out. Then, there's a moment the group suddenly disappears — a reminder the show was contrived. Want more from The Business of Fashion? Subscribe to our daily newsletter here. Hosted on Acast. Lanah P is new on the podcast this week. A pioneering LGBTQ Person of Colour, Lanah was born in Grimsby, an English fishing port. Often derided in earlier times with the words - It's grim in Grimsby, it clearly was for Lanah, who left at 17 for Manchester. There, Lanah became a drag artist, performed at the notoriously tough working men's clubs of the era, and quickly learned the art of putting down the hecklers.Lanah's time in Manchester led to a friendship with Mark E. Smith of The Fall and ended up supporting the band on tour. It was one of many directions Lanah's career was to take.Lanah came to my attention during the 1980s, through Leigh Bowery, and a pop single, Pistol in my Pocket. Produced by Pete Waterman the single became a hit on the Australian charts. Leigh dressed Lanah, and they became friends. In Britain, Lanah's probably best known for the Comic Strip Presents film Eat the Rich, a role that came about after meeting actor and writer Keith Allen, the father of pop star Lily Allen. There's more to Lanah's story, the stage, and film performances, but this hour gives an insight into the life of an LGBTQ pioneer who has led an uncompromising life through the bigotry and hate-filled 70s through to the more accepting days of today.Connect with me on Instagram - steve.blameSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/pop-the-history-makers-with-steve-blame/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy Hosted on Acast. Early on he won residencies for Trade at Turnmills, Egg and Limelight while also making his mark in New York holding a weekly show at The Palladium for Steve Rubell during the height of Paradise Garage. He has also graced the main floor of Privilege Ibiza, Space, Amnesia and DC10. As official DJ to the icons like Elton John, Kate Moss and Donatella Versace, he is also one of the fashion scene's go to performers. As one of club culture's most notorious - and best loved - figures, Tony is a complete force of nature. In his recent book I Don't Take Requests, he tells the most extraordinary stories of depravity and hedonism, of week-long benders and extreme self-destruction - and of recovery, redemption, friendship and the joy of a good tune.'Anyone can get a party started, but no one keeps it going like Fat Tony, the energy never dips andwhat a life he's lived.. ELTON JOHN & DAVID FURNISHDJ Fat Tony has been described as 'the closest thing that club culture has to a national treasure' and the 'unlikely cult hero of quarantine'. Few people have crammed so many lives into one: when your first line of cocaine is aged 16 with Freddie Mercury, where do you go from there? I Don't Take Requests is Fat Tony's breathtakingly candid and outrageous memoir of a life of extremes. From his childhood on an estate in Battersea where he honed his petty criminality, was abused by an older man and made friends with Boy George, to his teenage years spent parading the Kings Road in his latest (stolen) clobber, working as a receptionist for a prostitute, hanging out with Leigh Bowery and Sue Tilley and creating his drag persona, to his life as DJ to the stars and his spiral into serious drug addiction. Now, he is 16 years sober and, alongside working to help others overcome addiction, DJing for everyone from Elton John to Louis Vuitton - and running one of lockdown's most popular Instagram accounts with its wickedly funny memes. Austin Young is from Reno, Nevada and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. The foundation of his career is from studying at Parsons in Paris. Early in his career, Austin transferred his interests from traditional portrait painting towards a long celebrated career in portrait photography. In many ways, Austin is more accurately described as an image-maker: his projects illustrate the sublime qualities of character that make celebrated people unique. Based on a nuanced visual language of pop-culture iconography, his trademark style and techniques have captured a broad palette of musicians, artists and celebrities including Debbie Harry, Leigh Bowery and Margaret Cho, among others. In multiple bodies of work, Austin confuses personality and identity issues in confrontational and unapologetic image making about people who often split gender roles, stereotypical constraints and socially-constructed identities. Austin is co-founder and artist of Fallen Fruit, artist duo Austin Young and David Allen Burns, a contemporary art collective that uses fruit as a material for projects that investigate the hyper- qualities of collaboration. “Austin Young reconstructs tropes of pop art and pop culture into alarmingly brilliant new icons” - Shana Nys Drambot"Working with Austin Young is like being alone in a room with a spirit who wants to meet you. He is not interested in your mortality: he is interested in your immortality. [...] He reminds me of the great Hollywood portrait photographers from another era, of George Hurrell, in particular, who was interested in the painting, not the snapshot. There is always a place for the secular in journalism. Thankfully that place will not be in Mr. Young's studio." - Diamanda Galás"Austin Young is the best artist working in photography today. His work captures beauty at its most vital, carnal, visceral, alive! His exuberant intensity is matched by his innate sense of balance and upmost respect for glamour, in all of its many decent and indecent forms. His work will be seen as important historical reference for our times, and his name will be legend." - Margaret Cho"Austin's images are, like me, the best of both worlds. Flawless and perfect, they are dreamily artificial -- while somehow simultaneously remaining organic, genuine and very real." - Jackie Beat“I was beyond thrilled when Austin Young expressed interest in photographing Peaches Christ, not only because I knew Austin would create a gorgeously iconic Peaches image (which he did) but because it meant I'd be included in a brilliant body of work I've admired for years. Austin Young's subjects are my idols and his portraits pay glamorous tribute to the often over-looked world of dark divas, drag superstars, and underground film icons." - Peaches Christ“I'm pretty unabashed in my enthusiasm for Austin Young's work. I think he's the most original photographer to emerge in America since David LaChapelle.” -Richard Metzger

The outrageously candid memoir from club culture's most beloved - and notorious - DJ, Fat Tony. As one of club culture's most notorious - and best loved - figures, Tony is a complete force of nature. Here he tells the most extraordinary stories of depravity and hedonism, of week-long benders and extreme self-destruction - and of recovery, redemption, friendship and the joy of a good tune. DJ Fat Tony has been described as 'the closest thing that club culture has to a national treasure' and the 'unlikely cult hero of quarantine'. Now, he is 14 years sober and, alongside working to help others overcome addiction, DJing for everyone from Elton John to Louis Vuitton and the Beckhams - and running one of lockdown's most popular Instagram accounts with its wickedly funny memes. It is all here in horrifying, glorious, heart-breaking detail.

Art and controversy go hand in hand. Many celebrated artists tiptoe on the edge of taste, decency and political correctness as a means to explore emotions and boundaries. In the 1980's underground queer entertainment was grounded in shock value.  But, by the tail end of the decade, the landscape looked and sounded very different. The prominent razzle dazzle doyennes found themselves in very different territory... Leigh Bowery included. "Talk amongst yourselves" as hosts Bobby and Kristina discuss 2003's Taboo on episode two of My Favorite Flop.   ABOUT TABOO Based on the lives of pop singer/songwriter Boy George and fashion designer/performance artist Leigh Bowery, Taboo tells the partly re-imagined story of a group of club “names” set in the location of what was the city’s most fashionable nightclub — the now-legendary Taboo. The musical features a book by Mark Davies Markham (extensively rewritten for Broadway by Charles Busch), lyrics by Boy George, and music by George, John Themis, Richie Stevens and Kevan Frost. After premiering in London’s West End in a converted warehouse in 2002, comedian/talk show host Rosie O’Donnell decided to bring the show to Broadway the following year, investing over $10 million of her own money. Taboo‘s entire Broadway journey was subject to a lot of negative press, concerning both the show itself and Rosie’s personal life, and ultimately closed after only 100 performances. Despite its failure, Taboo continues to have an ardent and vocal cult following to this day. An intimate revival was staged in London’s West End in 2012.   Original London Cast Luke Evans as Billy Dianne Pilkington as Kim Euan Morton as Boy George Matt Lucas as Leigh Bowery Paul Baker as Philip Sallon Gemma Craven as Josie James Mark McGee as Marilyn Michele Hooper as Janey Drew Jaymson as Steve Strange Mark White as Derek/Petal Gail MacKinnon as Big Sue Declan Bennett as Guru Dazzle Kay Cole as Zee Asha Joe Docherty as Jake Lucy Harris as Foxy Andy Morton as Policeman Lucy Newton as Virus Original Broadway Cast Euan Morton as Boy George Boy George (Credited as George O’Dowd) as Leigh Bowery Liz McCartney as Big Sue Raúl Esparza as Philip Sallon Sarah Uriarte Barry as Nicola Cary Shields as Marcus Jeffrey Carlson as Marilyn Jennifer Cody, Dioni Michelle Collins, Brooke Elliott, Felice B. Rewind to the 1980s and London nightlife was an explosion of creativity – the new romantics were in, dramatic fashion looks were everywhere and at the back of the club, having a gossip, there'd be Sue Tilley, also affectionately known as Big Sue.  She was the best friend of the outrageous performance artist and fashion designer Leigh Bowery, who became known for his shocking stage shows and about whom she wrote a biography. Sue worked at the Job Centre during the day and the door at his infamously wild club night Taboo, which was later immortalised by Boy George in the musical of the same name, by night. This was a place, in the mid-80s, where genders and sexualities were blurred and the more flamboyant your costume, the better.  It's also where Leigh and Sue met the painter Lucian Freud – both ended up sitting for him but Sue's nude portrait, 1995's Benefits Supervisor Sleeping, is perhaps among his most famous works, which, when it sold for $33.6 million, was the most expensive painting by a living artist ever to be sold at auction. Sue left London to retire by the seaside on England's south coast and it's where she can often be found hosting quizzes and DJing in one of the local pubs, or working on her own pieces – she is now an artist in her own right and often paints the colourful characters she remembers from her clubbing days. Russell & Robert meet artist David Dawson for a private, after-hours tour of 'Lucian Freud: The Self-portraits', the breathtaking new exhibition he has curated at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. We discuss being assistant/head of studio for the last 20 years of Freud's life, Leigh Bowery, going to Taboo nightclub, Freud's early drawings and paintings inspired by surrealism, his grandfather Sigmund Freud and how Freud got all his information for his paintings from looking. We explore Freud's friendships with Francis Bacon and Frank Auerbach, what it's like to be a nude model for Freud's paintings - Dawson was subject in 7 paintings and 1 etching - and discover how Freud protected his own privacy and his unparalleled discipline of painting 7 days a week, every day of the year! We learn about David's own painting of urban landscapes and also his photography including timeless portraits of Freud. Follow David on Instagram @davidelidawson and see images of all artworks discussed in this episode @talkart. Special thanks to Alexandra Bradley at the RA @royalacademyarts.We strongly recommend visiting this exhibition. 'Lucian Freud: The Self-portraits' runs until 26 January 2020 and is in the RA's smaller, Sackler Wing of galleries and they expect demand to be high. To ensure the best possible experience, all visitors (including Friends of RA) must book a timed ticket to see this show.In a world first, more than 50 paintings, prints and drawings are brought together by this modern master of British art. One of the most celebrated portraitists of our time, Lucian Freud is also one of very few 20th century artists who portrayed themselves with such consistency. Spanning nearly seven decades, his self-portraits give a fascinating insight into both his psyche and his development as a painter – from his earliest portrait, painted in 1939, to his final one executed 64 years later. They trace the fascinating evolution from the linear graphic works of his early career to the fleshier, painterly style he became synonymous with.

The Panti Monologue: "When I was 20 yrs old, at a party in my brother’s flat in London, I met the most exotic and fabulous creature I’d ever laid eyes on - a performance artist called Leigh Bowery. He was a big man - tall, voluptuous, and fleshily imposing. By the time I met him he was already a legendary figure on the club scene, and for a young gay Irish art student, meeting him was exciting and revelatory. Leigh had made a name for himself as a living work of art, a clubland flesh-and-blood sculpture, a towering installation of skin and costume that moved with surprising grace through crowded rooms of startled clubbers or puzzled gallery patrons. His astonishing costumes, which sometimes pushed his very flesh into impossible, unsettling shapes, set a standard for which every club kid with ping pong balls stuck to his face has been striving for ever since. For Leigh, his body wasn’t an end, it was a beginning; a medium of transformation, an opportunity. With paint and fabric, movement and performance, he pushed against the boundaries of his own form, his own biology - and transformed himself. Until I met Leigh I had always thought that I was, in a way, fixed. Immutable. That I was, and always would be, the vet’s son from a small town in the west of Ireland. That my parameters were already set, and my defining characteristics already defined. But in Leigh I began to see all sorts of new possibilities. He was a doughy kid from the arsehole of Australia, and yet here he was, the startling epicentre of “cool London”. The most fabulous creature in a scene full of fabulous creatures. In Leigh I saw that transformation wasn’t just possible, it was exciting, and even necessary. And for the first time in my life I realised that I didn’t have to be defined or confined by where or what I came from - I could define myself! I was the master of my own destiny! Life was for creating not consuming! Convention was for wimps! And I’m still interested in this idea of transformation as both possible and even necessary. On an individual level, but also, in a wider context. How do you transform a society, a country? What are we and what do we want to be? And just as the caterpillar sheds its chrysalis, what do want to leave behind when we become who we are truly meant to be?" Alison Bancroft has written a book with a refreshingly straightforward title: Fashion and Psychoanalysis: Styling the Self (I. B. Tauris, 2012). One immediately suspects that it reflects the author’s two most enduring obsessions and this suspicion is confirmed within the first quarter of our interview. Yet, as it turns out, both “psychoanalysis” and “fashion” demand qualification.By “fashion” Bancroft means adornment that assumes an innovative form – creativity applied to the surface of the body. The psychoanalysis she has in mind is Lacanian theory. If, then, you are expecting a condemnation of fashion as a frivolous pursuit or a Kleinian explanation for shifting hemlines and anorexic models, Bancroft will not satisfy. But if you are curious about what fashion as art and corporeal style might express about fundamental Freudian and Lacanian concepts like identification, femininity, and the unconscious, you will be delighted and edified.Readings of fashion and its sociocultural resonances teach us a great deal about the delimitation and radical questioning of the twentieth-century human subject.  By bringing fashion into dialogue with the Lacanian notions of object a, the sinthome, desire, and jouissance, Bancroft unearths its disruptive potential: the capacity of fashion — like that of literature, painting and psychoanalysis — to give fleeting glimpses into unconscious truths and the feminine abyss of subjectivity. The main body of Fashion and Psychoanalysis consists of four chapters that are discrete psychoanalytic explorations of fashion-as-protest, moving chronologically through Lacan’s teaching and spotlighting some of its key concepts. The first chapter considers the fashion photography of Nick Knight, whose presentations of fragmented, fractured bodies confound imagined ego boundaries and invite hysteric identifications from viewers. The second chapter discusses the work of the two most celebrated enfants terribles of 2000s fashion: John Galliano (formerly head designer at Dior) and Alexander McQueen.Bancroft analyzes a few of their best-known collections in order to demonstrate couture’s function as object a, driving desire and signaling feminine jouissance.Chapter 3 is about the courageous performance artist and fashion icon Leigh Bowery.Bancroft argues that his self-abjection and simultaneous embodiment of feminine and masculine positions prompted a painful pleasure in his audience – a transgressive jouissance brought out by masculinity’s violent destabilization. The final chapter investigates the similarities between Hussein Chalayan’s highly conceptual designs and Lacan’s sinthome. Is fashion, like the sinthome, a blurring of language and corporeality, the collapse of the Symbolic into feminine logic, the apex of aesthetic self-invention?Listen in and find out!
