On this PPN Camera and Inspiration episode, Marco invited the inspiring photographer, author, and YouTuber Sean Tucker who has been on Marco's interview wishlist the longest and who has been requested to be a guest the most by PPN listeners. Sean was invited to this show because Marco had the feeling, that we all could use an inspirational jump-start right now, to get our creativity going and to either level up on current projects or to get inspired to start new photo projects.   This show is sponsored by MPB.com: www.MPB.com Inspirational Photographer of the Month: Sean picked Canadian-born photographer Joey Lawrence (Joey L.). Sean is impressed by how tasteful Joey creates his portraits and how meaningful his work is. Joey has some personal projects like the tribes of the Omo Valley in Ethiopia, the guerrilla fighters of Kurdistan, and Holy Men in India, where he mixes natural light and strobes to create very striking images. You can find out more about Joey L.'s work by visiting his website: http://joeyl.com Here are some behind-the-scenes videos of the three photo projects:: http://joeyl.com/onset/videos Motivation to pick up your camera and start new photo projects: In the main segment of this show, Sean shared different approaches to get in the right mindset to think about new projects or to level up on existing projects. Making friends with change and “embracing the suck” is part of the process, that helps us to explore and expand our mental, creative, and technical mindset for future photo projects. Inspirational Photo Book Pick of the Month: Sean's pick: “BYWAYS” Photographs by Roger A. Deakins. Sean is inspired by Rager A. Deakins as he is one of his favorite cinematographers who has done some of the most beautiful films of the last 20 years. Deakins' photos in this book are from rural North Devon and the neighboring seaside dating back as far as 1971. Sean likes the way Deakins frames his images with the same eye that he has when he composes his movies - but without the famous actors and lighting setup.  So it is like the purest version of his vision to Sean. The book is published by Thames & Hudson and has 160 pages Amazon US: amzn.to/43eROAq Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/43DNURv Marco's pick: “The Meaning in the Making (A Philosophy - for the Creative Life)” by Sean Tucker.   Author's description: This book contains personal stories interwoven with the psychological, philosophical, and spiritual practices which help me stay a mentally healthy, inspired, and motivated "maker of things." I may be known first and foremost as a photographer, but this book has been written for anyone who makes anything; from filmmakers to musicians, and from painters to writers. So, no matter what your chosen creative outlet is, this book is for you. Episode 88: Show Notes.Today on NorCal and Shill we welcome guest Joey L., a Canadian-born photographer and director currently based in Brooklyn, NY. His work has been and continues to be, consistently sought after by prominent advertising clients. He's photographed several recognizable faces including De Niro, Danny DeVito, Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, and John Legend, just to name a few. Since he was a teenager, his own curiosity for different ways of living has inspired his work, including his series Holy Men — which turned into an annual pilgrimage to document Halloween in Brooklyn — a favorite personal project. Joey believes the personal connection to subjects and clients carries weight and is a large part of what makes an image resonate. Joey's work is truly inspirational, and he has been named one of the 30 Photographers Under 30 to Watch by Complex Magazine. Today, we discuss a range of interesting points, including Joey's initial thoughts on NFTs, how his photography career kicked off with his dinosaur toys, and the importance of finding your own path as an artist. Don't miss out on hearing from the talented mind of Joey L., so tune in now.  Key Points From This Episode:•    We talk about Joey's hardware wallet.•    Why he thought the NFT space looked like the photo he took of Sam Spratt's Council of Luci.•    How his first art, taking photos of dinosaurs, kicked off his photography career at age 7.•    Why he feels blessed to have had his photography career kick off extremely well (and continues to do so).•    Why, even though his name is Joey, he'd probably be a squirrel (if he were an animal).•    How his love for Ethiopian food got him addicted to traveling to Ethiopia.•    The importance of finding your own path; the best advice he's ever been given.•    Why, in the NFT space, artists should be wary of jumping on trends too quickly and why slow and steady is the way to go.•    Why he'd like to relocate his family to India for a few years.•    Joey asks NorCal Guy a big question from a collector's standpoint. •    He asks NorCal Guy about his aspirations for the podcast.•    A shoutout from Joey L. Over the years he has continued to hone his craft and blur the lines between his personal work and his commercial projects, earning him coveted spots like the Lavazza calendar is 2016, previously shot by other top photographers like Annie Leibovitz and Mark Seliger.  Joey gives us an insiders look at what goes into creating his personal work, how he stays organized with his schedule, why he feels "burn out" is no longer an issue for him, and the advice he gives to those veterans out there that think the golden era of photography is over. Molly Kaplan is the Head of Multimedia at ACLU National. The job is unique within the ACLU in that while the majority of its employees are lawyers, Molly is one part artist, one part campaign specialist. Her job is to help captivate the American public bringing to their attention the issues the ACLU is undertaking on their behalf. Her more formal film roles would include executive producer, creative director, director, producer, editor… every project requires a different hat. I’ve known Molly for a few years now having first worked on a project with Joey L. for the ACLU. It was not until our current collaboration, the Know Your Rights Campaign, that our working relationship manifested into something much greater. To cut straight to the point, working with Molly is nothing short of fantastic. A true collaborative partner, the power of her inclusive and open minded nature is evident in the final products she creates working alongside talented filmmakers. In the podcast we discuss the somewhat meandering path Molly took to get to her current role. Having started in the food industry traveling around the world studying olives, her way in life has never been concrete or straight forward. I believe it’s important to note and discuss this fact for everyone out there who thinks success comes from clear and definite goals. We also discuss our working relationship and what makes for optimal client/vendor collaboration. Lastly, given the outcome of the election, we discuss the importance of the ACLU specifically examining the role film pieces play in legal cases that are under the national spotlight.

Joey L is a wildly talented photographer working on everything from top tier commercial work to thoughtful documentary work. Living every young photographer’s dream he headed to New York at a young age and found critically acclaimed success quite early, he was still a teenager. His work has been featured in top magazines, billboards in Time Square and wrapped around double decker buses in midtown Manhattan. Clients include Lavazza, National Geographic, The U.S. Army and many more. When he is not shooting for a client, he’s usually on the road working on his travel photography. Differing from photojournalism, he brings his commercial aesthetic to far flung places mixing his technical ability with a dive into human exploration. One of the more interesting notes is that he routinely visits the same tribes, forming relationships over years, which grants him unique access. Now entering his mid-20s, he has accomplished more than most people do in their whole career. For that reason I enjoyed our discussion on how to stay engaged when many common photography goals have been achieved so quickly. He’s well spoken, articulate and has a keen sense of self awareness. At the time of recording he had just returned from a personal trip to Syria and Iraq. He went to document the Kurdish resistance. It was fortuitous to catch him in such a fresh state of mind about the experience as it was his first formal discussion on that project. Those photos have now been seen the world over and achieved international acclaim.

"I'm a big advocate of having a vision and seeing it through. If that leads to work, then so be it." I’m stoked to bring you today’s guest, Joey L. He’s what I like to call a prodigy in the photography world. He’s in his young 20’s now, but he shot the Twilight movie posters when he was 17 years old. He began his photography career and making videos a year or two before that. He’s one of those kids that makes me feel like I didn’t start my career soon enough. More than that, he’s amazingly talented, and today we get to dive deeper into talking with Joey about how important the development of your personal work is to developing your visual brand and attracting commercial clients. Joey’s personal work is amazing and inspiring to me because he treks out to the beyond reaches of the world to photograph beautiful portraits of tribal people. A lot of his trips, he treks 3-4 days each way just to get out to the tribes he photographs. He then spends 3-4 weeks at a time with them (which we'll hear more about). Not only has Joey photographed these people, but he's also created a documentary showcasing the making of the prints, hanging a show in new york city, then taking the show back to the people of the tribe and presenting it to them. Joey is a huge inspiration. So lets get into it, hear about Joey’s adventures, and how his fine art has fueled not only his passion, but the commercially sustainable side of his business. "The best way to grow is to hang out with people that you admire." Some things we learn in this podcast: About working as a professional creative What it was like working on the Twilight Series poster and how an artists work can be turned into something completely different when working on big projects Humble stories of how world class photographers get started The importance of personal work The first big personal trip to India that inspired Joey L How travel shapes artistic skills and life perspective How to get started as a freelance photographer The power of photography to get the artist comfortable with discomfort How to survive financially as a freelancer The number one thing in business from Joey L How to excel with like-ability on big, stressful photography sets The source of inspiration for tutorials Social media importance for top photographers Joey L's favorite project to date Connect with Joey: Instagram | Twitter | Website | LearnFromJoeyL

Joey L has accomplished more as a photographer than photographers twice his age, strike that three times his age.  If that didn’t catch your attention than his work will. His style is unique, distinct and sought after by major brands and companies.     I recently sat down with Joey at his Brooklyn studio for an open and straight forward discussion that takes us back to where he started and how he got to where he is today. If you have been looking for that kick in the ass this interview might just do it.    But before we get to the interview we have our regular scheduled business to attend to.     I had some house cleaning to tend to from a couple of questions I answered in RAWtalk Episode #075.  It turns out that yelling at a reader for buying an 18-200 TAMRON may have needed a little more context.    We catch up on last weeks photo news with Stephen where we discussed a photographer crowd sourcing a d4s, an interview with Max Jackson and some other interesting topics.     I want to thank RODE microphone for their support and don’t forget to check out their HUGE contest going on right here http://www.rodemic.com/myrodereel   For more information on Joey L please check out his website https://www.joeyl.com/     To download this weeks Episode and check out the photo news go to http://froknowsphoto.com/rawtalk-76/
