Welcome to Purposely SHORT, a weekly episode that features one of our friends or past guests sharing their expertise on a specific topic and life or career experience. This week's episode features Susanne Ritzenhoff Director of Toi Ora Live Art Trust talking growing up in Germany before migrating to New Zealand. Susanne shares her upbringing in a large family with anentrepreneurial father, who instilled a sense of responsibility and philosophical outlook. Growing up in post-war Germany, she reflects on her identity and the impact of her country's history. A pivotal moment occurred when her father, a war veteran, sang the national anthem in both English and TeReo at her children's school, inspiring her to learn Te Reo - Maori Language - to connect with New Zealand. Suzanne emphasizes the importance of learning from the past, empathy, and finding common ground to avoid negative outcomes. The episode is sponsored by Benevity and Trust Management.
Toi Ora Live Art Trust, based in Auckland, has spent nearly30 years using art and creativity to support individuals facing mental health challenges. Originally founded by a group of peers from the Carrington Mental Health Institution, Toi Ora has grown into a dedicated space where people canexplore creative expression through painting, poetry, drama, and music. The organisation believes in focusing on strengths, encouraging artistic growth, and fostering social connections to promote well-being.Leading this initiative is Susanne Ritzenhoff, whosepersonal and professional journey has shaped her vision for Toi Ora. Originally from Germany, Susanne grew up in a large family influenced by her father, an entrepreneur and philosophical thinker. The post-war environment in Germany, along with ongoing national reflection, played a role in shaping her perspective on resilience and adaptation. After moving to New Zealand nearly 30 years ago, Susannebegan working in the arts with the Auckland Theatre Company before transitioning to the social sector. Her experience in fundraising and communications took her to organisations such as Youthline and PresbyterianSupport Northern. When the opportunity arose to lead Toi Ora, she saw it as a way to bring together her passion for the arts and her commitment to social change.Susanne's approach to leadership is informed by her ownexperiences with dyslexia, which she views as both a challenge and a source of strength. She values creative problem-solving and believes in the importance ofpersonalised care and community support in fostering mental wellness. Under her leadership, Toi Ora continues to provide a space where individuals can findbelonging and purpose through creative expression. One participant's experience highlights the organisation'simpact—struggling with chronic illness, she discovered that her art did not need to be perfect to be meaningful. This shift in perspective not only boosted her confidence but also transformed her outlook on life.Looking to the future, Toi Ora hopes to expand its servicesacross Auckland and beyond, with aspirations to secure funding for year-round operations. Susanne remains committed to ensuring that creativity and communityremain at the heart of Toi Ora's work, helping individuals connect with themselves and others through art.For more information about Toi Ora Live Art Trust and itsprogrammes, visit www.toiora.org.nz

Oriana Fox interviews artist Chinasa Vivian Ezugha about her recent projects and the role her early work and upbringing in Nigeria have played in encouraging her political voice. Fittingly, she is currently developing an ambitious, multidisciplinary project speaking out against the use of food scarcity as a weapon of war; and is culminating her practical and doctoral research on glossolalia. Importantly, she also discusses her tenure as co-director of the Live Art Development Agency in London and the lessons she gleaned about creating safe spaces and the personal boundaries required to enable them. Chinasa Vivian Ezugha is a Nigerian-born, British performance artist, scholar and PhD candidate at University of Exeter, United Kingdom. Currently, she is the Assistant Professor of Live Art/Art as Social Practice at New York University, Abu Dhabi. Her current research focuses on the voice of glossolalia and aims to expand this vocal practice beyond the walls of a church. Oriana Fox is a London-based, New York-born artist with a PhD in self-disclosure. She puts her expertise to work as the host of the talk show performance piece The O Show.Credits:Produced, edited and hosted by Oriana FoxOriginal theme song written and performed by Paulette HumanbeingSpecial Thanks to Gavin Butt, Lara Perry, Sven Van Damme, Katie Beeson and Janak Patel***Would you like to see your name in the above credits list? Artist Chinasa Vivian Ezugha discusses the performance piece Because of Hair, which was a springboard to her career as a performance artist and an activist. The piece entailed covering her face with a hair mask she had constructed as a sculptural object that, when worn, functioned as a catalyst for interpersonal and affective exchange, prompting myriad and often disturbingly violent reactions. Because of Hair reflects Ezugha's understanding of the politics of hair from her perspective as an Igbo woman living in Britain and also prompted her to make new work about the Biafran war, which deeply impacted her family. In other words, the interview explores how self-exposing performance art not only overlaps the personal with the political but also fosters the artist's confidence to have a political voice. This interview was carried out in 2017 as part of Oriana's research for her Phd on risky self-disclosure in performance art. Recently, Oriana has done a follow-up interview with Ezugha which will drop in two weeks. As broadcast October 7, 2023 with plenty of good tunes and good people in tow. Tonight we enter part four of our six chapter Busking World Cup spotlight with a couple of wanderers who have happened to touch down here in Gwangju for the 2nd annual event held in our fair City of Light. First up is a semi-nomadic artist out of far northern Cairns, Australia named Tessa Devine. A brilliant singer-songwriter, Tessa Devine actually ended up winning the People's Choice Award at the event as the audience's favorite, and she's certainly a favorite in our hearts as well. In an interview showing both her very free spirit and tasteful selection process, Devine shouted out some of her favorite Aussie compatriots in an hour of excellent music and an at times uproarious interview. Hour two we highlighted a rather wild trio making their debut at the Busking World Cup called Music In The Jungle. The trio of Jacelyn, Katie, and DJ 2Shay certainly were one of more original artists on the roster this year, with a repertoire that included live paintings made with each appearance. Katie and 2Shay literally came straight into the studio with luggage and everything in tow fresh off their flight, and the trio took us through a selection of tunes from their favorite audio compadres in the world along with their roots in Canada and the place they met in Costa Rica.#feelthegravityBusking World Cup 2023 Special #42023.10.07Tracklist (st:rt)Part 1 with Tessa Devine (00:00)Tessa Devine – It's YouRob Howe – CarolinaTullara – Better Hold OnTones and I – Fly AwayFelipe Baldomir – YouLT – Act Your Age Part 2 (33:15)Tessa Devine – WildAmber Reid – Side LinedThe Dreggs – You and MeMardi Wilson – SaltyGreta Stanley – It's Cool to Be in LoveKim Churchill – Window to the Sky Part 3 with Music In The Jungle (63:55)Jacelyn – FoolLeh-lo – Patience Zig ZagNya Marquez – 7 ElevenDonavon Lee Carpenter – Born to Love YouMan Crush – Don't Be Trippin'Editus feat Manuel Monestel – Cahuita Is a Beautiful Place Part 4 (96:40)Jacelyn feat Asha – Kaleidoscope GRiZ – Mystik DubClari Sol – Yin YangEddy Ruyter – DaydreamPanArmonia – Oli Gis AnthizeiGwen McCrae feat Ferry Ultra – Let Me Do My Thang (dOP remix)*

Hey listener, due to some scheduling conflicts because I caught a cold you're getting a rare solo episode this week. Going into 2022 I know that I was going to buy a Playstation 5 at some point, so I spent the majority of the year saying goodbye to my PS4 by playing everything that I hadn't played, but still wanted to for the system. I also begin the episode by opening up about why I started the podcast and some mental health stuff that I currently find myself working through and what I think caused it. I've booked guests for the rest of the year, so I promise we'll get back to our normal programming next week. Topics this week include: Live Art on Black Friday at Cosmic Gorilla from 2 PM - 5PM and Fireside Pizza at 6 PM on Thursday December 1st. The march to episode 100 and the origin story of the podcast. Why I don't do Zoom episodes. The mental side effects of isolating during 2020. The compounding of my inability to remember names. Aging and disconnecting from society. Hey Listener, thank you for listening to the show and helping me by letting me talk. 16:25 the beginning of Playstation 4 talk. The backstory of a lifelong gamer. Why I didn't buy the Playstation 5 in late 2020/2021. 22:02: I didn't expect to love Titan Fall 2 this much. 24:35: Tom Clancy's The Division II predicted the future…sort of. 27:40: Why I didn't into The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. 30:10: What is my favorite caveman game of all time? Far Cry: Primal. 32:25: My return to Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim thanks to stand up comedian/podcast host Luke Young. 34:57: Sometimes I get drunk and buy The Contra Anniversary Collection. 35:40: I wanted to love WWE: Battlegrounds, but it was not to be. 36:40: Everyone should play Katamari Damacy Reroll. 38:32: Revisiting Horizon Zero Dawn because I got it's sequel when I bought my PS5 and how I fell in love with it. 41:00: Whoa here it comes, it's Man-Eater! 42:30: I'm officially playing the Playstation and Spiderman: Miles Morales is my new favorite superhero game of all time.

Episode 3 of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2022 series Today Louise and Elaine chat with performer, spoken word poet, writer, vocalist, sword swallower Livia Kojo Alour about her new Edinburgh Festival Fringe show Black Sheep. BLACK SHEEP After moving to London to live within a more diverse community, Livia learns that the self-hate feelings she experienced all her life are internalised racism and survival techniques. While building her career in the circus industry she grows tired of playing a stereotype and starts unpacking layers to grow and overcome. She uses poetry, music and performance to speak about the challenges a Black woman faces when daring to move into her power. Carving out a place for herself as one of the UK's up-and-coming Black voices, Livia presents a performance that is timely, unsettling and powerful. A retrospective monograph of Alistair MacLennan's performance art practice, its influence on the Belfast art scene, and its relationships with wider art histories. Actional Poetics-Ash She He: The Performance Actuations of Alastair MacLennan, 1971-2020 (Intellect, 2022) (Intellect, 2022) is the most comprehensive and complete legacy monograph about Alastair MacLennan's extensive performance practice. Alastair MacLennan is emeritus professor of fine art, School of Art and Design, Ulster University in Belfast. He is one of Britain's major practitioners in live art, and travels extensively in Eastern and Western Europe, also America and Canada, presenting ‘Actuations' (his term for performance/installations). MacLennan is a founding member of Belfast's Art and Research Exchange, of Belfast's Bbeyond performance collective and is a member of the performance art entity Black Market International. He has represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale (1997) and is an honorary associate of the National Review of Live Art, Glasgow, Scotland. There is a wide variety of approach in the essays, ranging from descriptive to interpretive. Some set the work in historical context and others provide pertinent biography. This variety is appropriate – and perhaps even necessary – in looking at the work of a living artist whose work is particularly complex. The selection of essays presents a complex body of work in an understandable way, with each writer allowed to address the art in their own terms. Placing the work in historical context is important but presenting MacLennan as an influential teacher is also important. Includes a significant contribution from Adrian Heathfield (professor of performance and visual culture at Roehampton, UK) who has written an extended essay on MacLennan's oeuvre, focusing on its use of materials and its creation of sculptural environments. Discussing the artist's deployment of slow-time action and contemplative space, Heathfield sees MacLennan's work as activating sustained contact with the elemental and locates MacLennan's work as a significant intervention in performance art history globally and discusses the politics of its engagement with local history, violence, social conflict and memory. The primary readership will be academics, researchers and scholars working in performance art and contemporary art in general. Also valuable to students in performance art, visual arts and related practices. Of relevance to academics and artists in the interrelated fields of performance art, art and philosophy, critical theory, conflict studies and Zen philosophy. Hey Listener, we're gearing up for the big “Six Bomb Boards Presents The Death Row Show” at Madtree Brewing in in Cincinnati this Saturday April 30th from 4 PM to 10 PM. One of my favorite Live Artists, Holly Funk, comes on the show to discuss what it's like making art in front of a room full of people. Topics this week include: Large Japanese drums. Is Live Art performance art? “It's not just white guys with beards…but it's a lot of white guys with beards”. When did you start drawing things? “I'm a good problem solver, but I'm not creative”. Artists sniffing their own farts. Playing in a Jackson Pollock cover band. What artists do you look at for inspiration? Swiping vs. photocopying. Why is Adobe so complicated? Digital art vs. Analog art. Your host has a Live Art panic attack. Stories of interacting with the public of yore. Graduating art school and then people stop making art. Your host loves humor in artwork. How do you feel when you're making Live Art? Shout to Woodward Cinema and SecretBase Theater. Hands are weird flesh spiders. Nationalism sucks. The anxiety and frustration of trying to make art happen in Cincinnati and shouting out a lot of incredible local artists.
You can also watch this episode on Youtube where English, Italian and Spanish subtitles are available or visit the Metralla Rosa website for more details.Born in Nairobi, the London based artist Julie Bloom grew up between Africa, Asia and Europe – or more specifically between Kenya, Hong Kong, Germany and the United Kingdom – and it is this concealed cultural diversity that can be found in both her work and personality, shaping her decidedly eclectic and modern visual language. Being the daughter of an architect and having been nurtured by such varied urban landscapes throughout her life, Julie explores an artistic language that is heavily influenced by the role architecture plays in the lives of those of us who allow ourselves to inhabited by the cities we inhabit.Parallel to this, Julie tirelessly develops collections of work created with various media. Her body of work contains an incredibly fertile mix of abstract pop paintings and drawings inspired by the graphic language of geometric shapes, as well as prints and lithographs which she creates in limited editions. With a frankly enviable versatility, Julie also allows herself to flirt with figurative representations of iconic characters from the pop world, as can be seen in her series of urban landscapes inhabited by Marilyn Monroe. An assorted amalgamation of influences in her work reveals a fascinating contrast between her admiration for the urban landscape and her thirst for nature, which is clearly derived from a life of travel and experiences in different parts of the world. In fact, the fusion of her life with her creative experiences can also be seen in her performances and interactions, in which she carries out an unapologetic and covert dialogue with the urban landscape, showing her work precisely where she wants it to be seen in the time honoured fashion of ‘guerrilla art'. In her work Julie not only reveals herself while hiding, but also plays at transforming herself as she dares to push the limits of art and its institutionalised conventions. One of Julie's most recent artistic projects are her fantastic Translations – Interactive experiences in which she creates images during a dynamic real-time exchange with her subjects, giving their words and emotions form and colour. Indeed, in this episode of Metralla Rosa you will watch and see the results of Julie's ‘Translation' of Carla's very own stream of consciousness. And now, enjoy the interview!_____________________Related LinksJulie Bloom: Website | Instagram | Facebook | YouTubeTranslations: Website | YouTube_____________________For further information about this interview, including links to anything mentioned by Julie, or to continue reading this text in Spanish, English and Italian, visit the Metralla Rosa website.Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/metrallarosa)
