Nicholas Mihm Director Interview | 'Bubjan' Dreaming of a Free Society in Iran Inspired by hours of in-depth interviews by Executive Producer, Brandon Stanton of Humans of New York, “Bubjan” is told from the perspective of Parwiz and his eldest son, Abarmard Maziar. Bubjan is also executive produced by Parwiz's grandson, Rostam Zafari. Rostam has long nurtured a dream to bring this inspirational story to life, a story that has resonated with him since his formative years. Stanton has supported the release of the film by uploading a series of 54 posts on HONY's prominent social media account, starting on September 10, 2023.    This film also carries special significance as during its filming, the world lost Jina “Mahsa” Amini. As most already know, Mahsa was arrested by Iran's morality police for what they deemed "improper" hijab attire, and she endured severe beatings and tragically passed away while in police custody. Parwiz Zafari's words, shared in these interviews, echo profoundly – his yearning for Iranians to unite and liberate their nation. Parwiz has held on to the belief that Iran will one day become a free country, and he holds hope that a new generation will carry the torch towards a brighter future for his homeland. As we unveil "Bubjan”, Mahsa Amini's impact reverberates stronger than ever, fueling a movement that refuses to be silenced.   Connect with us on our website for more amazing conversations! www.brettallanshow.com Got some feedback? Journalist and Photographer, Jack Scrine, joins Lindsay remotely to chat about his book HALIfolks: The Faces and Stories of Halifax, a compilation of stories and images from his popular blog/social media project of the same name. He shares his inspiration for the project, his tactics for approaching strangers and helping them to open up, the responsibility of being entrusted with people's intimate stories, and how those stories evolve over time. About Halifolks: In the early 2010s, Australian Jack Scrine found himself in Halifax, Nova Scotia, with plenty of travel experience but little more than a camera to his name. As he wandered the city, he started to capture images that documented the eclectic, the unusual, and the everyday lives of the people around him. A fan of Brandon Stanton's Humans of New York, Scrine realized there were similar stories of love and loss, happiness and sadness, friends and enemies, and embarrassments and triumphs all around him—and Halifolks was born, first as a blog, then as a Facebook page, and now, for the first time, as a book. Featuring 150 captivating colour images of Haligonians, both famous and obscure, Halifolks: The Faces and Stories of Halifax highlights stories that cut to the heart with truth, simplicity, and honesty. It's not every day we are confronted with questions like: When were you happiest? What is your greatest struggle? What is your biggest regret? The answers can be tragic, uplifting, and even funny—but ultimately, they are always healing.

Venus Morris Griffin bravely shares her harrowing life story and experiences for this last episode of season 3 of the podcast. I want to offer a trigger warning for all listeners – we will be discussing the abuse that Venus endured throughout her 20-year marriage to her first husband. Today she is the mother of 7 and a very successful realtor in Georgia. While facing betrayal, abuse, infertility, addiction, mental health crises, and so much more Venus was able to create a beautiful life.  I first heard Venus' story when Instagram creator and author, Brandon Stanton, of Humans of New York, shared a 13-post feature about her. Venus worked two jobs and got herself to college after growing up in a violent home with a mom who was an addict. While at college she dated and married Tripp Morris and started their family together. Although there were signs of abuse during their engagement, things really began to unravel 20-years later when she received a phone call from a prostitute. Her husband's double life was uncovered and he was sentenced to 45-years in prison, leaving Venus in tremendous amounts of debt and with a nursing baby. In our conversation, Venus shares what she felt in that moment of betrayal and how her faith and determination helped her to not only survive but thrive!   Follow Venus on Instagram  Subscribe to the podcast here

She said that every time you get a piece of feedback, the first thing you should do before you reject it—before you think it's stupid is accept it and try and be like, okay, if this is true, then what can I do about it?...Accept it as truth before you outright dismiss it. Because after a while, that was not the only email I got like that. I got a number of them that were very critical, but it made me have thicker skin. It made me evolve in my writing. Are you a passionate fan of Design Matters like I am? It's one of the world's oldest podcasts and one of the best shows out there. Debbie Millman scratches her insatiable curiosity and explores what it means to live a rich, fulfilling, intentional life with luminaries like Brené Brown, Cheryl Strayed, Brandon Stanton, Seth Godin, and, of course, Roxane Gay. (All guests of 3 Books, too! Clearly we have tethers between our hearts.)   Where do we start with Debbie Millman?   Well, she's ‘one of the most creative people in business' according to Fast Company and one of the ‘most influential designers working in the world today' says Graphic Design USA. She's got a wonderful new book called Why Design Matters: Conversations with the World's Most Creative People, a giant, heavy, amazing tome put out by Harper Design which serves as a compressed set of wisdom and values from Design Matters.   Debbie is the author of seven other books including: How to Think Like a Great Graphic Designer and Brand Thinking and Other Noble Pursuits. She co-founded the world's first graduate program in branding at The School of Visual Arts back in 2010. For 20 years before that she was the President of Sterling Brands, one of the world's leading branding consulting agencies. What did she do there? No big deal: She helped design brand identities and logos for Star Wars, Burger King, Häagen Dazs, Gillette and even the No More movement.   Is she an activist? She sure is!   She's also working with the Joyful Heart Foundation to eradicate sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse and the rape kit back log.   Fascinating and containing many multitudes, it was an honor and privilege to welcome Debbie Millman on 3 Books to talk about: how you avoid limiting possibilities, why regret cannot be metabolized, what happens when you're public about your shame, what makes for a great interview, and, of course, what are the incredible Debbie Millman's 3 most formative books!   Let's flip the page and jump into Chapter 97 now…   What You'll Learn: What makes for a good interview? After refining yesterday's approach, we learned the derech nigleh explanation given by the Meiri, followed by Rabbeinu Yonah, which also led us to his commentary on the very similar 19:25. We intend to spend one more day on this pasuk. Note: The shiur begins with me presenting a Chanukah gift to the dorm guys. The gift was the book "Humans," by Brandon Stanton (a.k.a. the Humans of New York guy). I decided to include it in the shiur because it's related to Mishlei. John 6:56-69[Jesus said,] “Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever.” He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum. When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?” But Jesus, being aware that his disciples were complaining about it, said to them, “Does this offend you? Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But among you there are some who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the first who were the ones that did not believe, and who was the one that would betray him. And he said, “For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father.”Because of this, many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him. So Jesus asked the twelve, “Do you also wish to go away?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”So, this is our last Sunday in the very well-worn series of Gospel readings about bread. I lamented enough about that last week, so I won't go down that road again. Suffice it to say it's been 6 weeks of Jesus talking about himself as the Bread of Life, the Bread from Heaven, Bread for the sake of the world, and whatnot. And I'm kind of over it. I was out of gas and out of ideas and on the verge of a nothing-burger of a sermon for this morning when I heard a story about scones – scones! – that felt like bread from heaven in its own way; manna in the wilderness for this preacher, if you will. And I say “bread from heaven” not just because I needed a sermon and this one landed in my lap – or rather, I heard it on the radio – when I thought I was out of luck. This felt like “manna in the wilderness” because I'm feeling as tired and as sad and as scared and as angry and as out of sorts and as exhausted and all the rest by all the things these days. I don't mean to dodge the despair in Afghanistan. I'm not pretending away the suffering in Haiti. I can't avoid the continued concern over COVID in our country. But I just wanted to be fed and to feed you all with some good news and nourishment for the journey of whatever lies ahead for us in the coming days. And it's a story about some soda bread scones. But, before the scones, a thing about a guy and a website, a couple of books and a heck of a social media presence. His name is Brandon Stanton and his photography project called “Humans of New York” started back in 2010. He had a pretty simple but ambitious idea to photograph 10,000 random, everyday New Yorkers, going about their daily lives, and compiling an exhaustive photographic catalogue of the inhabitants of one of the largest, greatest, most diverse cities on the planet.Along the way, his photography shoots turned into conversations – from which stories and quotations would become blog posts, which grew in popularity enough to glean millions of followers on social media, of which my wife has been one for quite some time. Brandon Stanton has since turned it all into a couple of books, too, and branched out to include the same from other cities around the world. Now, back to the bread – the soda bread scones, to be more specific.Mary O'Halloran and her husband own an Irish pub in the East Village of New York City that, impacted by the economic mess of a worldwide pandemic, had to shut down in March of 2020. With her husband working as a longshoreman up near Alaska for nine months, Mary was home with six kids to home-school and a bar she couldn't keep afloat. She moved her kids into the bar and started catering meals to relief workers, which kept her busy and made some money, but not enough to pay the bills. So a friend – from the band that played in the bar on Thursdays – helped her set up an online store so she could sell these soda bread scones smothered in blackberry jam, which was a simple recipe of her mother's from back in Ireland. And it was something. Not enough to pay all the bills, or catch up with the rent, but enough to get the attention of a local news outlet who did a story on Mary, the kids, the bar, and all she was doing to survive. And people started ordering her scones.Which is when Brandon Stanton showed up – the Humans of New York photographer, blogger, social media star. When he heard about Mary and her scones he posted the following to his Facebook page, which I invite you to hear with a healthy dose of snark, sarcasm, and sense of humor:“I know there's a volcano of big scone hype that's about to erupt, so here's our plan.Mary normally charges $18 for an order of scones, but as she explained there's barely any money in it for her.I do know that there's a lot of bargain hunting scone fanatics out there. But I also know that many of you are ‘scone curious,' and would love to support Mary.If you fall in the second category, I've put together a special offer for you.For $30 you can get an order of scones, and a limited-edition drawing from Mary's daughter Erinn. (Depending on the amount of orders, the drawing might not be highly intricate. A lassie's gotta do her homework.)Each box will also include an invisible Irish blessing that will be passed down through the generations to all of your descendants until the end of the time. …Mary started crying when I suggested raising prices, because she says other people are hurting more than her.So if you are also in a tough spot, but want to try the scones, do not worry. The $18 non-magical scones are still available through her website. If you are in the city go visit Mary O's at 32 Avenue A.Every Thursday night is Irish Music night.May the road rise to meet you.”Twenty-four hours later, Mary had $1,000,000 in soda bread scone orders – something like 25,000 orders for 150,000 scones. She also had no small amount of worry about how, if, and when she would be able to fill those orders all by herself, with only the pub's kitchen and her staff of six kids and regular patrons from the bar who often stepped up to help. Which is where I found the Gospel in all of this. Because when Mary heard the news about all of those orders, she asked Brandon Stanton, “I can do this, right?” And he promised her she could.“Because,” he wrote to his followers, “every one of those orders came from people who want the best for her. And I felt confident that we'd all be patient while she figured out a new process for making scones.Mary has a great team around her. She refers to them as ‘The Regulars' as if they're a squad of superheroes, but they're actually longtime customers who transform into volunteers at a moment's notice.Clint was serving food last night. Steve and Shelly were bartending. Liz and Deb were watching the kids.Alexia … dropped everything to manage Mary's online ordering.Caitlin, Rogan, TJ, Sara, Mimi, Bob. The list goes on and on…With this support group, and her own business experience, Mary has all she needs to deliver 25,000 boxes of delicious, blackberry-jam-smothered, blessing-infused scones. It's just going to take some planning. And some time. Our goal was always to help with Mary's burdens, not add to them. She will deliver the scones as fast as she can. And things may fall into place rather quickly. But if you absolutely need your scones in the coming days, or even weeks, feel free to request a refund. For everyone else, your scones will drop from the sky like a pleasant Irish rain. (Or like manna from heaven, perhaps.)And when the box is opened, your descendants will be blessed for a minimum of ninety generations. Thanks to all of you, and may the road rise to meet you.”Our world – and more of God's children than not, it seems – are hurting and broken and scared and lost and exhausted and all the rest right now. We are hungry for some measure of hope, some sense of peace, some evidence that there is an end in sight to whatever is scaring or threatening us most right now.And Jesus showed up to be the promise for us that grace and mercy and peace are worth it, that we can do this, that God's love wins in the end. That the ones who eat the bread we get in Jesus will live forever, in spite of it all.And this teaching is difficult. This good news is hard to believe when you see the scope of the suffering that surrounds us these days. Who can accept it? Some don't. Many cannot. How could you, why would you, why should you, considering…?I hope it's because, as believers, we see ourselves and each other as “The Regulars” in Mary's bar – the children of God and followers of Jesus – who can do no other. “Lord to whom can we go? Where else is there?”We are called to do justice and love kindness and walk humbly, you and I; called to make, break, be, and share the Bread of Life that comes in Jesus Christ because there is no better way, not greater blessing, no deeper hope, for the sake of the world: for the Humans of New York … Afghanistan … Haiti … and the ones around the corner, too.AmenI gleaned the information and inspiration for this sermon from this bit on NPR's/WFYI's Weekend Edition and from the following piece in TheIrishPost.com.You can order your own box of scones and/or support Mary and her family by visiting Mary O's Irish Soda Bread Shop if you're so inclined.

In this episode, I had the honor of interviewing the one and only Dr. Nadia Lopez and we discussed everything from her career in education, her personal self-care journey, and everything in between! THIS episode is one that you definitely want to bring your notebook for! So many gems dropped throughout this conversation! To learn more about Dr. Lopez, you can visit her website at thelopezeffect.com or follow her on Instagram & Twitter with the handle @thelopezeffect. BIO: Dr. Nadia Lopez is an award-winning, globally recognized thought-leader in education, who opened a school to close a prison. At an early age, she was taught the importance of utilizing education as a tool to solve social issues impacting our society. This served as one of the reasons why, in 2010, she opened Mott Hall Bridges Academy, a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) focused school, located in Brownsville. The media often depicts this New York City neighborhood as poor and violent, but rarely do they focus on who and what has caused the inequities directly responsible for the school-to-prison pipeline that exists in this community. Despite its major challenges, Dr. Lopez had the vision to change the narrative by proving that the children of Brownsville are brilliant and have value in this world. In 2015, one of her scholars, Vidal Chastenet was asked by Brandon Stanton, the founder of Humans of New York, who was his greatest influence, and he said, “My Principal, Ms. Lopez…” The post went viral, generating $1.4 million in donations to provide scholarships for college, summer enrichment programs, and the opportunity to visit universities that include an annual trip to Harvard University. This led to a meeting with President Barack Obama at the White House, an interview by Ellen Degeneres, and features within the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Essence, Ebony, Black Enterprise, EduWeek, and Glamour Magazine to name a few. This transformative work has led to Dr. Lopez's selection as the 2019 LinkedIn Top 10 Voices in Education; 2016 Global Teacher Prize Top 50 Finalists; best selling author of The Bridge to Brilliance and Teaching in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. She is an international speaker who has presented keynotes at conferences such as ISTE, ILA, ASCD, and NCEA, in addition to delivering TED Talk on the Education Revolution with over 1 million views. Her most notable awards include the Barnard College Medal of Distinction, Black Girls Rock Change Agent Award received alongside former First Lady Michelle Obama, Ebony Top 100 Award, Nelson Mandela Humanitarian Award, and TV One's 2019 Education Maverick Award. Transitioning from the role of a school administrator after recovering from stress-induced illnesses, Dr. Lopez continues to speak internationally, consults with companies to develop strategic partnerships, as well as supporting leaders through 1:1 and group coaching. Through her non-profit organization, The Bridge to Brilliance, she is building bridges between education institutions and private sectors to address issues of inequities that impact Black and Brown children within marginalized communities. Her company ElevatED BLK offers online courses, conferences, and activations that support participants to prioritize wellness and develop sustainability practices for their personal development. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/identitytalk4educators/support

Thank you for listening to this first Alopecia Life episode of 2021. There's a lot of collective hope in the world right now, and today's guests are perfect for keeping that hope going. Last month, many of us who follow newsfeeds about alopecia were super excited to see the Humans of New York Facebook page featuring Danielle, Connolly, and Damon. Most of the world's population is still in the dark about what alopecia areata is, and by sharing their story with Humans of New York, awareness exponentially rose by the thousands, and by the time this episode releases, those numbers will rise to beyond 253,000. When talking after the interview, Danielle mentioned that she would like to "do more," which is something that resonates with so many of us who have been diagnosed or have family members with alopecia. We want to help others, especially in those early days. What better way to do that than by sharing their story on this huge HONY platform? One of my favorite things about the community we have around this show is the ongoing conversation not just between my guests, but with you, the listener. Whether it’s through my email newsletter, social media, or texting, the community we’ve built over 10+ years is real. This year, many of you asked for guests who are on their way up. Folks who have put what they've learned into action. Well, I could not think of a better show to bring in the New Year with one such guest, Paul Ninson. Paul is a documentary photographer and aspiring Cinematographer, born in Kumasi, Ghana. He's also a long time listener of the show. Having discovered this podcast and CreativeLive as a curious and budding photographer, Paul decided to sell his phone to buy his first camera. That was just three years ago. His path from then to now is incredibly inspirational, including a chance meeting of Brandon Stanton of Humans of New York in Ghana, connecting with yours truly, and eventually making his way to his dream school at the International Center of Photography in New York where he was awarded the Director's Fellowship and George Moss Merit Scholarship. To date, Paul's work has been featured in the World Photography Organization, and exhibited at the British Council. He was one for the official state photographers for the HRH The Prince of Wales and the HRH The Duchess of Cornwall's visit to Ghana. He has worked for various NGOs and organizations including Discovery Learning Alliance, Ark Foundation, United Nations, and many many more. Very excited for you to hear Paul's story and I hope you get a chance to view his work. You can find him at @pninson on instagram or paulninson.com. Enjoy + Happy New Year! After graduating college with a bachelor's in English, Malik gave teaching a try. He discovered he was good at it but wasn’t passionate about it. So he stepped away to fulfill his dreams as a comedian. Writing fell in his lap when his mentor Cedric The Entertainer asked him to join the writing staff of a tv show Cedric was staring in (The Soul Man). This week’s episode updates two podcasts from the first season of JTT – Episode 16, which focused on the weird death of Vicki Morgan, who had been a sort of paid mistress to Alfred Bloomingdale and (sometimes) his high powered friends – and Episode 19, which told the tale of Grade A Asshole Scott Peterson – who may or may not have murdered his wife Laci and the couple’s unborn son back in 2002.  The Vicki Morgan case took a fascinating turn over the course of this year when photographer, writer and blogger Brandon Stanton began filling the pages of his Humans of New York blog with stories of one Stephanie Johnson, who in her younger days as a burlesque dancer in New York was known simply as Tanqueray.  Stanton’s publication of Tanqueray’s stories have made her a social media star at 76 – and her fans have raised over $2.5 million dollars through crowd sourcing to make sure her rent and medical bills will never be a worry,  But it’s those stories – and those stories of stories – that brings Tanqueray to the Vicki Morgan murder.  Let’s just say that the rumors of Alfred Bloomingdale’s powerful friends being given “access” to Vicki have just gotten a lot more credibility – turns out Vicki and Tanqueray were good friends back in the day – and what Melissa’s found out about one of those powerful men is…well…you’ll just have to listen…  Scott Peterson’s case, on the other hand, is filled with about as much subtlety as a knock on the door with a bulldozer.  A total douchebag, Mr. Peterson behaved so badly in the aftermath of Laci’s disappearance, a lot of people (including Melissa) think he’d have been convicted if a video had surfaced showing someone else killing Laci.  Yeah, the jury hated him and just assumed he was guilty.  And probably, he was – but looking at this almost 100% circumstantial case, it’s hard to say with a straight face that he was convicted on anything.  In August of this year, the California Supreme Court vacated Peterson’s death sentence – and now, just this past week, that same High Court ordered a re-examination of Peterson’s conviction itself – signaling the possibility of a new trial and possible acquittal.  Like.  Wow.  Melissa takes a look at some of the reasons this may have happened – including the shocking revelation that one of the jurors at Peterson’s trial may not have been the most upstanding citizen.

Brandon was listed as one of TIME’s 30 People Under 30 Changing The World, and received the James Joyce award for the Literary and Historical Society for Professional Achievement. Not bad for a roaming flâneur who got fired from his bond trading job and just started walking around taking pictures all day. In this chapter we discuss: What did Brandon learn while photographing Barack Obama? What’s the difference between schooling and education? What system did Brandon adopt to improve his reading? How do we balance artistic ambition with family contentment? How can cannabis help with creativity? Why is it important that kids fear drugs? How can we rebuild trust? Let’s go!  What You’ll Learn: Why is it so important to never judge a person from one moment? Who was the original inventor of the self help movement? How do we separate reading from compulsion and curiosity? How can you design systems to realize more of your potential? ? How do we tap into our deeper artistic selves to tell better stories? What is freedom and how does success limit it? What is the difference between being an influencer and being an artist? Where does power in a modern democracy really reside? What does it take to be a historical biographer? Why is getting close to people who are suffering so critical to bettering the world? What does it mean to be a moral person? Have you ever heard of flash fiction? What about a mini-saga? Today I’m talking short stories—I’ll share a few FUN examples and then dive into sage advice which helped me outline five aspects of plot that work together to create the kind of personal stories family members and others actually want to read. I’ve pulled insights from an article about marketing in The Harvard Business Review and from boots-on-the-ground storyteller Brandon Stanton of HONY. I will also share what I learned in person from oral storytelling legend, Donald Davis. The FIVE aspects to focus on when crafting short, compelling stories …Identify essential charactersUse a single perspective—one that will allow you to deliver your message most succinctly.Reveal the crisis and the change or realization it caused. Use details that allow the reader to ‘picture’ your story. Write (or scrapbook) people, relationships and transformation For 20 years I’ve taught scrapbookers how to easily expose the true meaning in a beloved photo. I’ll share three of these Stories I Love from my first album. The cool thing about these kinds of personal stories is that they don’t have the same kind of “date stamp” that other scrapbook pages do—they become timeless messages from your life experience. Below are the three one-of-a-kind photos that inspired these stories. Please note that a photo does not need to excel photographically to be the genesis of a story you love—what it needs to do is elicit emotion that you will remember. Emotion is the key that allows you move through layers of information to the heart of personal meaning. Emotion most often accompanies photos that capture or represent relationships. Valerie Rose Julian and Me. Geoff and Addie: Seeing Eye to Eye “Mom, I can’t find my goggles!” Learn more about Stories I Love HERE. I started this episode with wisdom spoken by legendary producer, Don Hahn. Be sure to watch or listen to The Storytelling Essentials webinar replay. This interview hosted by Harris III is a powerful reminder of the need for personal expression and an understanding of the power of story—especially now—as we navigate current events and work together for needed and long overdue changes in our society. I truly loved every minute of this insightful conversation. If you’re looking for a short book to help you craft short family stories, I recommend this one. Telling Your Own Stories by Donald Davis is half prompts and half expert how-to. Donald is a sought-after oral storyteller who understands, practices and teaches the art of discovering your stories and bringing them to life.

If you can donate, click here, if you need help, contact contact@togetherrising.org.  You may or may not know Brandon Stanton of Humans of New York. He posted something on Instagram last week that made me pause and think.  What I want to focus on is the part where he’s talking about our behavior.  Of course, our first instinct is to protect ourselves, our children, and our families. That’s normal, human behavior and if we didn’t have this instinct, we wouldn't all be here now. So if you’re beating yourself up for panic buying, or for not having reached out to anyone yet, try to practice self-compassion and let’s move on.  I’m hoping by the time this episode reaches you, the dust has mostly settled. And by “dust mostly settled”, I mean the shock has worn off, you’ve figured out what your situation is right now, you understand we all need to take this day by day, and if you’re not there yet, you’re working towards a place of surrender.  And if that’s the case, may we all be able to think about our behavior. Listen in to this episode as I break this down more for you and talk about how to be your best self during this time. I also get into GRIEF, as this might be something you’re dismissing without knowing how important it is.  Lastly, on April 7th, I’m hosting a free Book CLub Q & A. Beyond 6 Seconds was created based on the fact that most people have incredibly short attentions spans. When Carolyn thought of recruiters, she realized most make their decision what pile a resume goes into within six seconds. Carolyn’s passion is talking to everyday people who have incredible stories that grab people within six seconds. In talking with Carolyn a few things became apparent that a guest must know before approaching a host. What impression do you give in the first six seconds? Carolyn’s insights Be authentic. Know your personal brand. Know your strengths. Determine what makes you unique. Be genuine. What drives you? This is important to know. Combine this to be noticeable in 6 seconds or less. Realize, you are being judged immediately, from the moment someone sees you and you open your mouth. It’s human nature. During the interview you will find out who her most memorable guest was and why. When you pitch, be specific. Listen to a few episodes (or at least part of the episodes). Get your information correct such as the name of the show, host’s name, theme and niche when you pitch. Not doing so puts you in the “not to be considered” pile. Avoid generic pitches. Let the host know what kind of value you will bring to the audience. Realize that hosts get lots of pitches on any given day. Top three things to do to get on shows Research the show and pitch from that perspective and know the theme of the show Point out why you would make a great guest Be prepared for your interview and offer a few talking points When asked who her “bucket list” guest is, Carolyn was quick to say, “Brandon Stanton the man behind Humans of New York or Hony.” Want some “win over” points with Carolyn? Did you ever wonder if anything ever spooked Warren Buffett? Or how Jeff Koons got started? In the spirit of Tim Ferriss’ books, Tribe of Mentors and Tools of Titans, Gillian Zoe Segal spent five years meeting, interviewing and photographing 30 diversely successful billionaires (Buffett, Sara Blakely, Michael Bloomberg), artists (Jeff Koons, Marina Abramović), creatives (Frank Gehry, Hans Zimmer, Matthew Weiner), authors (Anderson Cooper, Graydon Carter, Jeff Kinney), athletes (Laird Hamilton, Jillian Michaels), and of course a Harvard Dean and Nobel Laureate along with various and sundry inventors, leaders, and pioneers. The result is a wonderful book of inspirational backstories and actionable approaches, aptly titled Getting There: A Book of Mentors. Gillian Zoe Segal is an entrepreneur, CNBC contributor, photographer and author of not only Getting There: A Book of Mentors but also New York Characters. She was also one of LinkedIn’s top voices and is a professional speaker having spoken at Google, Royal Bank of Canada, Lexis-Nexis, and numerous other venues across North America. Gillian received a BA from the University of Michigan and a law degree from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University. I first came across Gillian in Omaha at the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting where she was doing a book signing. In this episode we learn how growing up in New York City shaped her and her writing, particularly her first book New York Characters. Getting There is a literal who’s who of interviewees, but New York Characters, while having many celebrities and notables, it is much more eclectic. We talk about the how she came up with that idea, along with a budding genre, like Brandon Stanton’s Humans of New York. She tells us how she transitioned from law school graduate to photographer and author, along with the backstory to getting her first book published and how she got George Plimpton to not only be in it, but also write the Foreword. Speaking to her humanity, her author proceeds from the sale of New York Characters went to the families of the victims of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. We do deep dives into both of her books and learn how she went about reaching those profiled, how she convinced them to be in, who was the hardest to get on board and who was the easiest. It’s interesting to learn that many of those profiled had failures and some pretty difficult beginnings. She also uncovered commonalities among these amazingly successful people and discusses them, along with a few surprises. We even learn how she composed her shots.  Gillian had the benefit of doing a deep question and answer session with 30 of some of the most successful people in the world, and we find out how she changed as a result.  Gillian, like those she’s interviewed, lives a life in full. She is gracious enough to have put her findings and experiences into words and pictures so we can as well.

From beginners to lifelong creators, entrepreneurs to executives, astronauts to zookeepers, Jarvis and Stanton explored strategies for everyone to focus the creative forces inside and unleash them to transform our lives and deliver vitality to everything we do.  Jarvis and Stanton unpacked and reframed the creative process with the “IDEA” system: Imagine your big dream, whatever you want to create—or become—in this world; Design a daily practice that supports that dream—and a life of expression and transformation; Execute on your ambitious plans and make your vision real; and Amplify your impact through a supportive community you’ll learn to grow and nurture. Before there was a NY Times best-selling book, before there were more than 20 millions of followers on social media, before he launched a campaign that raised $1 million for a Brooklyn school, Brandon Stanton was a blogger with a quirky goal. He wanted to photograph 10,000 New Yorkers and create a visual census of the city. And that's when we found him. I stumbled on HONY in 2011 and had a crazy idea that we should invite him to one of our Free Photo Webinars. We often asked photographers to share their work on our webinars and answer questions from members of our community. Honestly, I didn't think I'd hear from him, so I was a little geeked out when he wrote right back — and agreed. In all, we spent about 1.5 hours on that webinar. Brandon answered questions patiently and shared his philosophy on so many parts of his work. Brandon's interview was one of my favorite from back then. I trimmed the conversation down a bit but wanted to leave most of it intact. I think you'll want to hear the entire interview. Support the show (https://www.learncanon.com/patrons)

You need to consciously decide what you’re going to spend your brain power on and consciously decide what you’re not. Focus on the things that make you feel the way you want to feel and do the things you want to be doing. You can plan all you want, but you won’t know if your plan works until you start executing it. The original Humans of New York plan looks nothing like what the project has turned into today. Choosing the work that you do is a better goal than not working at all. In 2010, Brandon Stanton started taking pictures of people on the streets of New York City and posting them on a blog. After thousands of conversations and pictures, Brandon realized he wasn’t a photographer. Rather, he was a believer in connection, in community, and in basic human sweetness. In large part, Brandon’s work has been so influential because he removed himself from the equation and allowed the communities he documents to speak for themselves. Brandon’s blog Humans of New York has accumulated over 20 million followers worldwide and turned into two NYT-bestselling books (Humans of New York and Humans of New York: Stories). It has also spawned an entire genre of similar blogs. Hundreds of aspiring documentarians have followed in HONY’s footsteps, telling the stories of countries, cities, and communities across the world. Brandon is also a dedicated philanthropist. He has spearheaded crowdfunded initiatives that have raised over $2 million for causes including victims of Hurricane Sandy and a scholarship fund for students in Brooklyn. Of course Brandon and I discuss his backstory. How he came to start Humans of New York and how it’s evolved, but we also: * go a layer deeper around his philosophy in sharing the work. He says “the more I disappear, the more influential HONY becomes. * talk about growing and cultivating an audience * following dreams is hard work and much much more. Enjoy! This week on Magic Lessons, Elizabeth Gilbert advises Anne, a photographer in Pennsylvania. For the last few years Anne has been documenting her brother's life. He's a veteran with PTSD and a recovering drug addict. She imagines turning all this material into a photo-essay exhibit or book, but she's afraid to take the next steps to make it happen. To help guide Anne, Liz calls up her friend Brandon Stanton, the photographer and creator of the photo series "Humans of New York.” Several weeks later, Anne reveals what she's been up to since getting all this advice.   Special Guest: Brandon Stanton is the photographer and creator behind Humans of New York. He is also the author of two number 1 New York Times-bestselling books, Humans of New York and Humans of New York: Stories. (Photographer, Storyteller) Through documenting Humans of New York (HONY), Brandon Stranton has created a blog showcasing the people in Gotham and the stories that have shaped their lives. While his work started as a simple photographic essay of colorfully dressed people he found on the street, it eventually morph into an intimate digest of accounts shared by the people he was photographing. Over time Brandon began to extract and broadcast their stories of deeper feelings and instances of transition mixed with candid humor. Eventually these stories shaped an online community of 13+ million followers which continues to share their collective thoughts and emotions regarding the subjects and their matter.  Today Brandon and I sit down to talk about the world we live in: a place where, once warmed up, people are more comfortable to talk about personal matters with a stranger than they are with their loved ones. Today's show discusses: Creating HONY through good stories The effects of interviewing 10,000 people Working to find the individual story of each person through presence The Key to life is… Keeping it grounded beyond your worldview Is Brandon a Reptilian Overlord? Working beyond definition Being a New Yorker with a larger-than-life project Approaching strangers and cutting through Broadcasting to strangers vs connecting with the people closest to us Changing with friends Sincere connection with each other  Manifesting your dreams for control and freedom Living in the work is the reward Let go of monetary concerns to get power in your life The worlds dumbest question LINKS Follow Brandon's journey: Humans of New York siteBe sure to sign up on the mailing list on my site! StudioDonovan.com Visit my friends at MindPodNetwork and help fund MindPod Network
