Nina e Norman de Garis Davies sono stati due egittologi e una coppia di disegnatori di grandissimo talento. Uniti nella vita e nella professione, a loro si deve la documentazione di un'enorme parte del patrimonio pittorico dell'Antico Egittto. Divinità dal carattere lunare lo troviamo protagonista in un mito a dir poco singolare e il suo personaggio e quella che era ritenuta una sua invenzione al centro di un dialogo riportato da Platone nel Fedro che pare volerci dire qualcosa ancora oggi.Bibliografia:G. Verità, Giustizia, Ordine cosmico personificate nella figura di una dea che si distingueva dalle altre per la lunga piuma di struzzo rappresentata sul suo capo. It's not about really what one part of the brain does; it's about how different modules in the brain relate to each other. And when you write in a physical notebook, you activate more parts of the brain than when you type. So, for instance, you tend to activate the hippocampus, which is your mental map, and you activate that when you're writing in a notebook. And they reckon this is because a notebook isn't just a thing; it's also a kind of place. And so, when you put an idea on the page, you're locating it on this kind of mapped reality, which is the pages of your notebook. And if you think about this, when you're flicking through a notebook, you quite often think to yourself, "Oh, I know this is on the left side at the bottom," or, "I know this was in blue, not black," or, "I know that it was a doodle in a corner of the page." And you don't get that when you're typing. And they think it might be to do with the fact that, as you scroll up, or as your document scrolls up the screen away from whatever it is—the leading edge of what you're typing—it just vanishes into the machine.Why slowing down improves your writing26:57: It is much easier to tap into a laptop. It's much easier to edit on a laptop. And it's much easier to word process, produce a thousand words of text on a laptop. But to make it good takes work, and if the process of writing is a little bit difficult if you're forced by the labor of handwriting, which is slow and hard work, to actually think through every word carefully as you order it, as you make your sentence, this I think is a really good discipline, and it will give you better quality results.The power of handwritten note taking28:12: When you're note-taking, there's a real advantage to the physical labor of picking a phrase, a sentence, a reference; you excerpt it, you choose it. And because it takes that two minutes to write down a long quote or something like that, or longer, you have to focus on every word as you do it. You can't just control C, control V. Yeah, or Apple C, Apple V, all of the quotes you need, and just dump them into your document. If you do it by hand, you digest them. You get to know them. And that's the best way, I think, to understand something that's been written by someone else—to copy it out because you have to really engage with it.
Amelia Ann Blandford Edwards nacque a Londra il 7 Giugno 1831, fu una scrittrice, giornalista ed egittologa britannica. Di famiglia modesta, ma donna dal carattere forte e indipendente, viaggiò a lungo con la sua compagna di avventure Lucy Renshaw e, in questo viaggiare, non poté mancare la Valle del Nilo. Mille le miglia percorse, oggetto di un diario di viaggio illustrato dal titolo A Thousand Miles up the Nile, pubblicato dalla Edwards nel 1877. L'egittologo tedesco K. R. Lepsius (1810-1884), con la famosa Lettre à M. Rosellini sur l'alphabet hiéroglyphique (1837), fu il primo a sottoporre il sistema di decifrazione elaborato da J.F. Champollion a una puntuale critica scientifica. Nominato nel 1842 professore a Berlino, organizzò e guidò una Spedizione (1842-1846) i cui risultati pubblicati nei Denkmäler aus Ägypten und Äthiopien (Berlino 1849-1859) rappresentano ancora oggi una vera e propria pietra miliare per l'egittologia. La Voce di oggi è fuori dalle righe e lo è per due motivi: è la Voce di una donna (e in queste nostre puntate di esordi egittologici voci femminili, per ovvi motivi, non se ne sentono praticamente mai) e non è una Voce che si sia mai occupata in prima persona di Antico Egitto, ma è la Voce di una viggiatrice curiosa che esplorò con arguzia gli usi e i costumi di una terra tanto lontana (in tutti i sensi) dalla sua Inghilterra. Un'esplorazione possibile grazie all'aiuto di suo fratello che la portò con sé. Perché il fratello di Sophia era lo studioso Edward William Lane, arabista ed egittologo, che nel 1836 pubblico un'opera di grande successo dal titolo ‘Manners and Customs of the Modern Egyptians', alla quale, però mancava un "piccolo" tassello: il mondo segreto delle donne! Quella di oggi è la Voce del mito per eccellenza nell'Antico Egitto e lo è perché è la Voce di Osiride, il dio dei morti. Sembrerà strano, ma la storia leggendaria su cui si fondavano la legittimità del potere regale e la gran parte delle credenze oltremonadane di questa straordinaria civiltà è sopravvissuta nella sua versione più completa -seppur tanto rielaborata e non priva di fantasiose (anche per un mito) aggiunte- grazie ad un filosofo e scrittore greco, vissuto all'ombra dell' Impero Romano e nato nel 50 d.C. circa, a Cheronea, in Beozia: Plutarco. Nestor Hippolyte Antoine L'Hôte, nato il 24 agosto 1804 a Colonia e morto il 24 marzo 1842 a Parigi fu un egittologo e disegnatore, membro della celebre Spedizione Franco-Toscana (1828-1829). Durante tre viaggi in Egitto, produsse centinaia di schizzi e disegni, molti dei quali inclusi nei Monuments de l'Égypte et de la Nubie di J. F. Champollion. Artista sensibile e dal gusto raffinato, la sua Voce, fatta anche di moltissime lettere e manoscritti, ci racconta il bello e il brutto dei suoi soggiorni e del suo lavoro in Egitto con una vivacità e una schiettezza davvero rare. Questa è la Voce di William John Bankes (1786-1855) e dell'obelisco di File che egli portò dall'Egitto in Inghilterra e che, ancora oggi, svetta nel formidabile giardino della tenuta di Kingston Lacy nel Dorset. Aristocratico, viaggiatore e fine collezionista, Bankes, con una geniale intuizione proprio sull'iscrizione dell'Obelisco di File, aggiunse un tassello fondamentale alla decifrazione dei geroglifici. Una biografia avventurosa e intrigante la sua alla quale, però, si aggiunge anche la vicenda di una grande ingiustizia. Bibliografia: G. He has made a lifetime study of the legends of King Arthur, and more recently of the history of piracy. His list of publications totals over 100, including Pirates (Athenaeum) which was a number one New York Times best seller for 22 weeks and was translated into 18 languages. He has acted as an advisor on several big budget movies, including King Arthur, Pirates of the Caribbean and Prince of Persia. His work on the education DVD to accompany King Arthur won a BAFTA award in 2003. His best known and most widely read works are ‘Pirates' (Carlton/ Athenaeum), ‘The Grail, Quest for Eternal Life' (Thames & Hudson, 1981) ‘The Winter Solstice' (Quest Books, 1999) which won the Benjamin Franklin Award for that year, and ‘The Wildwood Tarot' which has sold over half a million copies worldwide and is the second best-selling tarot of all time.. His book ‘Celtic Warrior Chiefs' was a New York Public Library recommended title for young people, and the more recent ‘Arthur of Albion' won a Gold Medal from NAPPA, a gold Moonbeams award and a BIB Golden Apple Award. His love of Tarot and divination began when he devised the best-selling Arthurian Tarot, with Caitlin Matthews in the 1980s. It has sold in the region of 150,000 copies world-wide and had been though three editions. Varvara Stepanova was a leader of the constructivist movement and co-author of the constructivist manifesto. Described as “a frenzied artist,” she designed books, magazines, posters, advertisements, as well as textiles, clothing, and costumes. On top of that, she was an author and poet. Her design style and aesthetic was avant garde, modern, and often characterized by simplicity and geometric forms and patterns, but Varvara was never content with stasis. She constantly evolved her style and worked to develop new concepts and ideas. As a co-founder of the Constructivist movement, her work typifies the aesthetic and philosophies of Constructivism. While Varavara worked on many of her own projects, she also did many together with her husband, Alexander Rodchenko, another well-known Constructivist designer. Her work often gets linked to Rodchenko's, and it's Rodchenko who gets mentioned in histories of graphic design and credit for designs that should be attributed to Stepanova as well. This week, I spoke to James Tait who is an architect, an author, and an educator. James was the winner of the internationally-renowned RIBA and RIAS Silver Medals in 2008. Since then, he's gained considerable experience as an architect, leading a broad spectrum of high-profile projects at some of the best practices in the UK. James is the author of a new book called "Entering Architectural Practice," which is published by Routledge. He's also authored another book called the "Architecture Concept Book," which was published by Thames & Hudson. In this episode, we focus on the themes that were emerging from Entering Architectural Practice. We discuss the growing gap between education and practice, and what universities can be doing to bridge that gap better. We also look at the roles and responsibilities of how practice can be bridging that gap back to university, making architecture education more valuable and more integrated into what you do as a professional. There were also a lot of very interesting topics that came up. We talk about some of the working conditions that young architects face and some of the root causes of that. We look at the fees of architects and why that has an impact on the working conditions as well. We also take a step back and look at the saturation of the architectural industry. We ask the question, "Are there too many architects?" If that's the case, "What types of things could and should we do about it?" And "Is that a good thing or a bad thing?" James is quite brilliant at being able to paint a multi-perspective argument around these issues facing the industry at the moment. Episode 126: Al-Harf as a site of Negotiating Modernism and Unity The articulation of the Arabic letter in modern art in the Arab world has been a popular topic of discussion. The letter served 20th century artists on multiple levels and allowed for contradictory arguments. The letter became part of a more complex discourse of signs that drew on a collective and historical memory of difference, rupture and continuity. It disrupted and subverted the rhetoric of regional separation and promoted unity; its prominence in this imaginative and constructed discourse alluded to an emphasis on cultural overlaps, intersections, connections, and continuity between the Mashriq and the Maghreb. Equally, it gave artists comfort and confidence that came from the immediate perception of a marked cultural (and at times political) identity for the work. Manipulating the Arabic letter in art, thus, served as a mediator between national identity, heritage and modern art. Nada Shabout is a Regent Professor of Art History and the Coordinator of the Contemporary Arab and Muslim Cultural Studies Initiative (CAMCSI) at the University of North Texas. She is the founding president of the Association for Modern and Contemporary Art from the Arab World, Iran and Turkey (AMCA). She is the author of Modern Arab Art: Formation of Arab Aesthetics, University of Florida Press, 2007; co-editor with S. Mikdadi, New Vision: Arab Art in the 21st Century, Thames & Hudson, 2009; and co-editor with S. Rogers and A. Lenssen, Modern Art in the Arab World: Primary Documents, Museum of Modern Art, New York, 2018. She is also founding director of Modern Art Iraq Archive. Notable among exhibitions she has curated: Sajjil: A Century of Modern Art, 2010; traveling exhibition, Dafatir: Contemporary Iraqi Book Art, 2005-2009; and co-curator, Modernism and Iraq, 2009. When asked what his personal commitment is to LGBTQ civil rights Petry stated, “I’m one of the ancients who’s been around fighting for LGBTQ rights since the early eighties and I’ve been involved in so many different ways over the years. I consider myself queer because I think that is a broader term that for me represents who I am and what I think and part of that commitment as a queer who is an artist and who also is an author and a curator is to try and bring queer artists to the foreground of the art world. We only have to think back a few years to realize that LGBTQ artists were very marginalized and that’s still the case for many people. In the LGBTQ movement every year I curate a Pride Exhibition in London which I really hope to introduce LGBTQ artists not only to that community but to the straight community and I work within all the structures that are available whether that’s museums or the corporate structure to get that recognition for LGBTQ people because I think what is at issue in the broader political sphere is this notion of fear. Fear of others and of course that fear is not limited to the general public. Länder uppstår och försvinner. Men även efteråt kan man ibland förnimma deras närvaro. Per J Andersson reser till ingenstansländer och får en vision av en kosmopolitisk framtid. ESSÄ: Detta är en text där skribenten reflekterar över ett ämne eller ett verk. Åsikter som uttrycks är skribentens egna. En gång besökte jag ett land som inte längre fanns. Ärligt talat var jag osäker på om det någonsin funnits. Men när jag läste på visade det sig att landet visst hade existerat. Många kungar och drottningar hade man haft. Och en ståtlig borg och ett magnifikt palats stod kvar och påminde om den forna prakten och lockade turister från när och fjärran. Poff, så fanns inte längre landet. Jag ville veta mer om landet som en gång tagit upp skatt, haft en regering, en liten armé och tryckt egna frimärken, så jag knackade på hemma hos maharaja Swaroop Singh, bror till den sista regerande kungen av kungadömet Marwar i den indiska Tharöknen. Kungabrodern tog emot i jaktsalongen i sitt palats full av kunglig glans. Det var en bisarr syn. Där satt han i sin orientaliska kostym i ett rum dekorerat med ett bord gjort av ett elefantöra som balanserade på en snabel, ett pennställ tillverkat av en buffelhov, elefantbetar på väggen förstås, och i ett hörn ett uppstoppat lejon stelnad i en rytande pose. Det kändes verkligen som om jag klivit in en försvunnen värld. Det var lite oklart exakt hur länge landet existerat eftersom afghaner, perser, moguler och britter flera gånger knackat på porten till borgen och krävt att få överhöghet. Men själva hävdade man att man funnits sedan 1212 och ända fram till 1947, då de brittiska kolonialherrarna till slut gav sig av, och Marwar tvingades bli en del av det självständiga Indien. Poff, så fanns inte längre landet. Men tack vare att invånarna fick behålla sitt lokala språk och sin särpräglade identitet känner de sig än idag som både som marwarier och indier. Det ena utesluter inte det andra. Bara de senaste 200 åren har det funnits minst tre gånger så många länder på jorden. Besöket i den del av Indien som en gång utgjorde landet Marwar gjorde att jag började fundera på hur många länder det egentligen finns på jorden? Räknar vi antalet medlemmar i FN blir ju svaret 193 länder. Tar man dessutom med Taiwan och Vatikanstaten, som också är självständiga stater men inte är med i FN, då blir det 195. Och gör vi en lista som också innehåller stater med begränsad självständighet och som inte kontrollerar sitt territorium kan man argumentera för att det finns hela 246 länder. Men det är ett ständigt föränderligt antal. Marwar är ju inte ensamt om att ha upphört att existera. Bara de senaste 200 åren har det funnits minst tre gånger så många länder på jorden. Bjørn Berge heter en dansk arkitekt, resenär och frimärkssamlare som gav sig sjutton på att skaffa sig ett frimärke från vartenda ett av de 1 000 länder som utfärdat ett. Resultatet blev inte bara ett imponerande frimärksalbum, utan också boken Nowwherelands, som är en atlas över försvunna nationer. Flera av de 50 länder han berättar om känner jag igen, som Danska Västindien och Bägge Sicilierna, medan många låter som namn från sagans värld. Som Obock som i slutet av 1800-talet var ett självständigt land på Afrikas horn, och Östra Rumelien, som idag är en del av Bulgarien men runt förra sekelskiftet fick uppleva tre decennier av självstyre. Bjørn Berges rumeliska frimärke innehåller i kosmopolitisk anda såväl arabisk, grekisk och bulgarisk som fransk text och är poststämplat i huvudstaden som hette Filippopolis, en av Europas äldsta metropoler. Så läser jag att stan idag heter Plovdiv och är Bulgariens näst största stad. Och då inser jag att jag helt ovetande besökt även det här före detta landet, eftersom jag ifjol gjorde ett kort stopp i staden i samband med en tågresa till Istanbul. Marken gungar till under mina fötter när jag inser att jag har färdats genom ännu ett ingenstansland. i vår historia göms inga bortglömda små 1800-talskungadömen. Det är som om en parallell värld framträder när jag bläddrar i atlasen över försvunna länder. Labuan, Boyaca, Sedang, Perak, Allenstein, Södra Kasai, Övre Yafa Pratar vi om samma planet? Inget av de här länderna nämndes på skolans geografi- och historielektioner. Jag tänker att jag som svensk nog är extra omedveten om alla dessa kortlivade lilleputtländer runt om i världen, van som jag är med en relativt stabil och enhetlig nationell historia. Visst, Finland och Norge har tillhört Sverige och några av våra sydliga landskap har varit danska, men i vår historia göms inga bortglömda små 1800-talskungadömen. I kontinental-Europa ser det ju annorlunda ut med olika furstendömen som ibland bytt nationell tillhörighet både en och två gånger innan de så småningom uppgick i Tyskland, Italien eller något av länderna i sydöstra Europa som bildades efter första världskriget när de Habsburgska och Osmanska rikena föll samman. Atlasen över försvunna länder får mig att tänka på alltings förgänglighet. Världskartan är inte statisk. Nationella identiteter konstrueras och tynar bort. Vilka av dagens nationer kommer någon gång i framtiden att ha försvunnits och glömts bort? Och vilka regioner kommer då att ha brutit sig ur sina moderländer och förklarat sig självständiga? Skottland, Katalonien och irakiska Kurdistan är ju redan på väg, även om deras frigörelseprocesser nyligen har hindrats. Abchazien, Nagorno-Karabach, Nordcypern, Somaliland, Sydossetien och Transnistrien har kommit lite längre, men inte nått ända fram. fler småländer kanske skulle vara bra för världsfreden. Frågan är förstås om det är önskvärt att de lyckas. Nationerna de bryter sig loss från tycker nästan aldrig det, men var landar man i för slutsats om man har ett mer globalt utilitaristiskt perspektiv? Ryggmärgsreflexen säger att fler länder skulle göra världen till en osäkrare plats, eftersom det betyder fler nationella viljor och därmed fler möjliga konfliktytor. Men eftertanken säger mig att de pågående väpnade konflikterna i världen idag inte utkämpas mellan länder, som tidigare i historien, utan praktiskt taget uteslutande inuti i länderna och ofta handlar om etniska och religiösa grupper som slåss för att bli fria från den regim som de mot sin vilja tvingats underordna sig. Som i Syrien, Irak, Afghanistan, Nigeria och Ukraina. Så fler småländer kanske skulle vara bra för världsfreden. Filosofen och lingvisten Julia Kristeva menar att glorifieringen av den nationella identiteten står i vägen för erkännandet av andra former av identitetsskapande. Vi är så fast i nationalismen att vi ser andra gemenskaper som skrämmande och tycker att det är en självklarhet att det är skillnad på folk innanför och folk utanför gränsen. Så fast att vi tycker att det är snudd på en naturlag att det ska finnas människor som inte har samma rättigheter som vi själva. Man skulle kunna säga att världen är på väg åt två olika håll samtidigt. En som sluter sig och en som öppnar sig. Efter andra världskriget har vi, å andra sidan, för första gången någonsin upplevt en emotionernas globalisering, som den tyske sociologen Ulrich Beck uttryckt det. Vad han syftade på var vår tids protester mot avlägsna krig och engagemang för flyktingar från främmande trakter. Tidigare i historien har vi inte brytt oss lika mycket om händelser långt bort. Det är inget tvivel om saken, enligt den tyske sociologen: den kosmopolitiska tanken har växt sig starkare. Men så har vi britternas Brexit, Trumps protektionism, Erdogans Turkiet och Europas alla högerpopulistiska partier. Man skulle kunna säga att världen är på väg åt två olika håll samtidigt. En som sluter sig och en som öppnar sig. När jag bläddrar i boken om ingenstansländerna får jag en vision som kanske kan accepteras i de politiska läger som idag befinner sig på kollisionskurs med varandra. Låt alla världens regioner få blomstra. Plocka upp de vackra idéerna om från kalla krigets slut i början av 90-talet och EU:s utvidgning i början av 00-talet. De idéer som handlade om en på samma gång mer global och mer regional värld. Låt fler folk få mer lokalt självbestämmande, rätt att tala sitt språk och skriva sin egen historia. Men se samtidigt till att finns internationella gemenskaper, som helst är starkare och effektivare än både FN och EU och därför klarar av att hålla chauvinismen och etnocentrismen stången. Hellre tusen nästan självständiga regioner som tyglas av överstatliga gemenskaper än 195 nationalistiska länder med obegränsat självbestämmande som trycker ner minoriteter, rustar sig till tänderna och ängsligt sneglar på varandra. Det låter kanske som en utopi, men samtidigt tror jag att det är den enda möjlighet som finns för kosmopolitismen att träda ut ur sitt filosofiska luftslott. In her exuberant and explosive pictures, Lois Greenfield captures not just the lithe and acrobatic forms of dancers performing their art, but the purity and exhilaration of movement itself. Without tricks or manipulation of any kind, she catches fleeting and impossible moments in a style that is both lyrical and graphic. Greenfield has been compared with Eadweard Muybridge for his exploration of human locomotion and with Henri Cartier-Bresson for capturing the decisive moment. Unlike her predecessors however, her images depict but don’t refer to the “real” world. They are documents of her imagination. Beginning her career as a photojournalist, Greenfield covered the experimental dance movement scene for the Village Voice from 1973 to the mid 90’s. In 1982 she decided to open her own studio where she could control the lighting, and work with dancers in a collaborative environment. Her exploration of the expressive possibilities of photographed movement and her unique approach to photographing the human form in motion has radically redefined the genre and influenced a generation of photographers. Greenfield has created signature images for countless contemporary dance companies as well as commercial clients. Her photographs have been featured in many magazines worldwide and exhibited internationally. She frequently gives lectures and offers workshops. Since 2014 Greenfield has been an Artist in Residence at NYU/Tisch Department of Dance and New Media. In 2015, She was honored with the Dance in Focus award in recognition of her ground-breaking contributions to the field. Pwyll's long-time friend, Teyrnon has beaten off the Monster from the Deeps and has discovered a beautiful baby boy wrapped in silks left in its wake. He and his wife decide to rear the child, but what of the misery of Rhiannon? In this episode, Teyrnon makes a decision and we finally discover what really happened to Pwyll and Rhiannon's child. This episode is also the 13th and final episode of the First Branch of the Mabinogi. Can Pwyll regain his Faerie Bride? Part 9 of the First Branch of the Mabinogion story. Having been tricked at his own wedding feast, Pwyll returns to Dyfed in deep depression. There he has to wait for a year before he can return to the Otherworld. Only then will he see whether Rhiannon's plan will work and he can regain his Faerie Bride. But tricking the tricksters is never an easy task! In this episode we see exactly what happens when Pwyll returns on that fateful day! Not from Nantle but from our own research.. The Court of Hefaydd Hen THE COURT OF HEFEYDD HEN (or Hyfaidd Hen) – unknown, but, according to the Mabinogion, certainly not in Dyfed. But according to some other traditions, Hefeydd was the first King of Dyfed. Gorsedd Arberth was his burial place and also the entrance to Annwn. Was this the enchanted castle in the third Branch? A hero called Hefeydd Hir is found in the 6th century epic poem Y Gododdin (composed by a Briton named Aneurin who lived in a land which is now part of Scotland). In the second Branch of the Mabinogion he appears as one of the Seven Knights, King Hefeydd of Dyfed who died in 892 etc... Hefeydd was a common name in Mediaeval Wales. The Kingdom of Gwawl fab Clud Map of Scotland showing the Wall It is said that the literal meaning of the name is “Wall Son Of Wealth”. “Gwawl”, according to the University of Wales Dictionary means: The Vallum (Roman wall) between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde - the Antonine Wall, not Hadrian’s Wall Man Light But his last name more than likely refers to the River Clyde in Scotland. Therefore he was one of the people of the Old North, that is to say they were Britons, like the Welsh. Can Pwyll regain his True Love? After a magical meeting with the beautiful and mysterious Rhiannon, a magical Lady riding a powerful White Horse, Pwyll falls deeply in love. They arrange to marry after a courtship lasting a year-and-a-day in the Otherworld Palace of her father, Hevaydd Hen. Hevaydd the Ancient, first ruler of Dyfed and now a powerful ruler in the Fae realms. Pwyll anxiously waits for the year to pass and still tells no one of his plans. Now it is Beltane - time for feasting and match-making and Pwyll gathers his Companions to seek for his own Match! Not from Nantle but from our own research.. The Court of Hefaydd Hen THE COURT OF HEFEYDD HEN (or Hyfaidd Hen) – unknown, but, according to the Mabinogion, certainly not in Dyfed. But according to some other traditions, Hefeydd was the first King of Dyfed. Gorsedd Arberth was his burial place and also the entrance to Annwn. Was this the enchanted castle in the third Branch? A hero called Hefeydd Hir is found in the 6th century epic poem Y Gododdin (composed by a Briton named Aneurin who lived in a land which is now part of Scotland). In the second Branch of the Mabinogion he appears as one of the Seven Knights, King Hefeydd of Dyfed who died in 892 etc... Hefeydd was a common name in Mediaeval Wales. The Kingdom of Gwawl fab Clud Map of Scotland showing the Wall It is said that the literal meaning of the name is “Wall Son Of Wealth”. “Gwawl”, according to the University of Wales Dictionary means: The Vallum (Roman wall) between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde - the Antonine Wall, not Hadrian’s Wall Man Light But his last name more than likely refers to the River Clyde in Scotland. Therefore he was one of the people of the Old North, that is to say they were Britons, like the Welsh. Pwyll meets a mysterious Lady In the first episode of the second half of Pwyll, Prince of Dyfed we find out that it has been three long and glorious years since Pwyll journeyed to Annwn and became firm friends with Annwn and his own kingdom is just beginning to shown signs of strain. It has been hot with fine weather for so long that the possibility of drought is becoming a real threat. Pwyll has not taken a Queen and produced an heir and the people fear that the land is suffering from his lack of fertility. Pwyll, however, has other things on his mind... The Cantrefs of Dyfed. Pic Arberth Castle today One of Pwyll's chief courts, obviously not far from Gorsedd Arberth (see below). Perhaps the site of the Norman Castle. Photo Location of the Gorsedd? The Iron Age fort on Camp Hill to the south of the town of Narberth is the most commonly accepted location for the Gorsedd of Arberth. We have marked it in Green with our location on Bryn Caerau marked in Yellow to the North-East of Arberth. Pic: Google Earth We suspect that these twin peaks are the site of the actual Gorsedd as they are higher than Camp Hill, match with the descriptions of the topography given in the text and have an earlier Bronze Age archaeological presence known as Caerau Gaer and Llandewi Gaer. Arberth, the "Sea-Voice" & the Gorsedd The River we have called the Sea-Voice is the river Marlais that flows from the River Taf. The Welsh name comes from 'marw glais' which means 'dead bruise' and therefore stagnant water, so we can only assume that it has long since become polluted. Will Pwyll survive his encounter in the Land of the Dead? In the final episode of the first half of Pwyll, Prince of Dyfed we tie up all the loose ends and find out whether Pwyll has fulfilled his promise to Arawn or whether Arawn still has a trick or two up his sleeve. Pwyll prepares to enter a battle to the death! In the last episode, Pwyll had started his battle training with Arawn's Knights, defended the Kingdom of Annwn from strange, Brutish invaders and learned a valuable lesson from Arawn's beautiful Queen. In this episode, after a year of preparation and waiting, he gathers his forces and travels to the Ford between the Worlds. There, he will meet with Hafgan the Summer-White, the King of the Land of Summer and face him in a duel to the death. Only one will walk away. Under the title of Ancient Britain and the Atlantic Zone, the project is now in its fifth year and is exploring the possibility that the ancient language of Tartessian is possibly the earliest known Celtic language and that the Celts came to Europe from the West. We covered the Year 3 conference and again in our report about the possible origins of Welsh. We also report that there is some evidence that an inscription in the Tartessian language may well have been found in Newfoundland indicating that the Celts may have visited the other side of the Atlantic at least 4,000 years ago! Pwyll goes to the Otherworld and meets the Dread Lord's Queen! In the last episode, Pwyll, the Welsh Prince of Dyfed, strikes a bargain with the Grey Lord, Death Himself - Arawn, Lord of Annwn. To make up for his great insult, he agrees to enter into single combat and fight a mighty King in the Otherworld on Arawn's behalf. Arawn uses his magic to change his shape with that of Pwyll, so that each looks like the other and then escorts him through the worlds to his castle in Annwn. The ashen face of Death turns his gaze upon our hero! In the last episode, Pwyll had gone hunting in the Woods of Glyn Cuch and had been beaten to the kill by a stranger pack comprising even stranger dogs. Having decided that the kill was rightfully his, he had driven off the other pack and set his own dogs upon the prey. It was at that moment that a stranger, the Shadowed Hunter, has appeared and was even now turning his dread gaze upon Pwyll. We interview the Director of The Spirit of Albion movie In this show, we hope to bring you the second of our special features about the mythic film, The Spirit of Albion: the Movie and celebrate Beltane along the way! We meet Damh the Bard, who created the songs used in the films and Gary Andrews, the Director, Author and Editor for the film. We managed to meet them on a nice, quiet afternoon in the beautiful country pub, The Giant's Rest which is almost at the feet of the mighty giant known as The Long Man of Wilmington, a huge chalk figure that makes his acting debut in the film to have a fun chat about the film. Pwyll, the Prince of Dyfed, goes hunting with unexpected results! We start with the First Branch, which tells the tale of Pwyll, Prince of Dyfed and his encounter with a strange other-worldy being. This week: Duncan talks to "super G" certified genius artist Camille Utterback. Camille Utterback is an internationally acclaimed artist whose interactive installations and reactive sculptures engage participants in a dynamic process of kinesthetic discovery and play. Utterback’s work explores the aesthetic and experiential possibilities of linking computational systems to human movement and gesture in layered and often humorous ways. Her work focuses attention on the continued relevance and richness of the body in our increasingly mediated world. Her work has been exhibited at galleries, festivals, and museums internationally, including The New Museum of Contemporary Art, The American Museum of the Moving Image, New York; The NTT InterCommunication Center, Tokyo; The Seoul Metropolitan Museum of Art; The Netherlands Institute for Media Art; The Taipei Museum of Contemporary Art; The Center for Contemporary Art, Kiev, Ukraine; and the Ars Electronica Center, Austria. Utterback’s work is in private and public collections including Hewlett Packard, Itaú Cultural Institute in São Paolo, Brazil, and La Caixa Foundation in Barcelona, Spain. Awards and honors include a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (2009), a Transmediale International Media Art Festival Award (2005), a Rockefeller Foundation New Media Fellowship (2002) and a commission from the Whitney Museum for the CODeDOC project on their ArtPort website (2002). Utterback holds a US patent for a video tracking system she developed while working as a research fellow at New York University (2004). Her work has been featured in Art in America (October, 2004), Wired Magazine (February 2004), The New York Times (2009, 2003, 2002, 2001), ARTnews (2001) and many other publications. It is also included in Thames & Hudson’s ‘World of Art – Digital Art’ book (2003) by Christiane Paul. Recent public commissions include works for The Sacramento Airport, The City of San Jose, California, The City of Fontana, California, and the City of St. Louis Park, Minnesota. Other commissions include projects for The American Museum of Natural History in New York, The Pittsburgh Children’s Museum, The Manhattan Children’s Museum, Herman Miller, Shiseido Cosmetics, and other private corporations. Utterback holds a BA in Art from Williams College, and a Masters degree from the Interactive Telecommunications Program at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She lives and works in San Francisco.
Professor Lars Lerup, Dean at the Rice School of Architecture, Rice University in Houston, Texas, writes on architecture, design, art and urbanism. Using predominantly field observation, Lerup relies on many disciplines for his continuously evolving point of view: sociology, philosophy, political theory, design theory and history. One of his main interests since his thesis at Harvard has been suburbanization and its architectural, urban and socio-economic consequences. Currently his work is concentrated on the proliferation of Suburbia, the possible existence of a “global suburbia” and the clash been progressivist notion of control and capitalist laisser-faire. Bart Lootsma (Amsterdam, 1957) is a historian, critic and curator in the fields of architecture, design and the visual arts. He is a Professor for Architectural Theory at the Leopold-Franzens University in Innsbruck and Guest Professor for Architecture, European Urbanity and Globalization at the University of Luxemburg. Before, he was Head of Scientific Research at the ETH Zürich, Studio Basel, and he was a Visiting Professor at the Academy of Visual Arts in Vienna; at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Nürnberg; at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and at the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam. He held numerous seminars and lectured at different academies for architecture and art in the Netherlands. Bart Lootsma was guest curator of ArchiLab 2004 in Orléans and he was an editor of ao. Forum, de Architect, ARCHIS and GAM. Bart Lootsma published numerous articles in magazines and books. Together with Dick Rijken he published the book ‚Media and Architecture’ (VPRO/Berlage Institute, 1998). His book ‘SuperDutch’, on contemprary architecture in the Netherlands, was published by Thames & Hudson, Princeton Architectural Press, DVA and SUN in the year 2000; ‘ArchiLab 2004 The Naked City’ by HYX in Orléans in 2004. Bart Lootsma is Board Member of architektur und tirol in Innsbruck and reserve-member of the Council for Architectural Culture at the Cabinet of the Austrian Prime Minister in Vienna. was a member of several governemental, semi-governemmental and municipal committees in different countries, such as the Amenities Committee in Arnheim, the Rotterdam Arts Council, the Dutch Fund for Arts, Design and Architecture, Crown Member of the Dutch Culture Council, Member of the Expert Committee 11. International Architecture Biennale, Venice 2008, at the German Ministry for Building and Planning as well as curator of the Schneider Forberg Foundation in Munich.
