This month, The Writers' Den dives into the space-time continuum with Hugo, Nebula, and Locus award-winning science fiction author James Patrick Kelly, a master storyteller whose work explores the boundaries of imagination and reality. In this mind-expanding conversation, Kelly shares how time travel can be used as a narrative device to illuminate character, deepen plot, and challenge perceptions of truth. Joining the discussion is John Herman, NHWP's featured author and a multidisciplinary artist and educator known for creative storytelling across mediums. This episode is co-hosted by Masheri Chappelle, NHWP Trustee Chair, and Dan Pouliot, young adult fantasy author and finalist for the 2023 NH Literary Awards for his YA novel Super Human. Together, they guide a genre-defying conversation on one of fiction's most fascinating literary tools. Don't miss this powerful exploration of time travel in fiction—where the past, present, and future collide.

What do you call someone that always seems to be in the right place at the right time? Is this just serendipity or is that person putting them in a position to take advantage of an opportunity? Since the old Roman empire days…philosophers have been proclaiming that “luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” And I don't want to sound like I'm stealing the final “luck or hard work” question Guy Raz famously asks guests on his “How I Built This” podcast, but it's an interesting thought framework for your consideration while listening to the conversation I recently had with my good friend John Herman. And while retracing that dozen-year working relationship would have been more than enough to pack this episode full of insightful conversation…we went way back in time to his apparel industry merchant days. And that's because…while it seems mismatched in hindsight to his CPG industry experience now, it ended up playing an outsized role even to this day within his newest venture (Bero Brewing). But John and I did talk extensively about the constantly evolving (and maturing) sports nutrition niche of the supplement industry…as he saw it firsthand through his time running the category at the specialty retailer GNC and climbing the executive ranks at Nutrabolt (before and after the launch of the C4 Energy carbonated energy drink that now generates over $650 million in annual retail sales). Finally, we talked about his decision to leave that powerhouse company…and what led him to believe pairing the celebrity packaged goods movement with the nascent non-alcoholic beer market was that next “right place at the right time” moment. But these are just some of the interesting topics we chatted about in this episode... Had the opportunity to work in the treasury department at American Express arrived 6 months earlier, there's a chance that John Herman may never have landed in a CFO office. “Treasury was an area that I was fascinated by,” remembers Herman, who—after having spent a decade at American Express—was given a “package” in 2009 when the financial crisis mercilessly bore down on the card services giant. However, in April of 2010, Herman punted the Amex treasury opportunity in order to accept an FP&A position at Yodle, an online marketing company that was generating roughly $50 million in annual revenue. “I decided that I wanted to work in an organization where I could make an impact, and I felt that it was time to take a risk in my career,” recalls Herman, who would report directly to Yodle's CFO and for the next several months be “a department of one.” “There was this opportunity to build out my team and take on new roles and learn really quickly,” recounts Herman. Along the way, Yodle would make multiple acquisitions and grow to more than $200 million in annual sales before being acquired by Web.com in early 2016. Herman had steadily advanced upward and eventually into the CFO office, where he ultimately led the due diligence and oversaw the sale process for the Web.com sale. “It ultimately came down to the fact that it was the right time to sell,” comments Herman, who within 6 months of the Yodle sale closing garnered his second CFO appointment at early-stage SaaS developer Movable Ink. Six years later, Movable Ink has surpassed the $100 million mark in annual recurring revenue and was recently valued at $1.3 billion—joining a select class of marketing technology brands. Asked whether he had ever contemplated becoming a CFO during the first half of his career, Herman replies, “I definitely didn't grow up saying, ‘Someday, I want to be a CFO'—it's really been a journeyman's trip to where I have now arrived.” –Jack Sweeney
