In this episode of AppSec Builders, Jb is joined by security expert, John Steven, to discuss his BSIMM study findings, the fundamental shifts in AppSec, software-defined security governance, and much more. About John: Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/m1splacedsoul/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/m1splacedsoul/) Twitter: https://twitter.com/m1splacedsoul (https://twitter.com/m1splacedsoul) Through his firm Aedify, John advises innovative security product firms as well as maturing security initiatives. John leads one such firm, ZeroNorth, as CTO. For two decades, John led technical direction at Cigital, where he rose to the position of co-CTO. He founded spin-off Codiscope as CTO in 2015. When both Cigital and Codiscope were acquired by Synopsys in 2016, John transitioned to the role of Senior Director of Security Technology and Applied Research. His expertise runs the gamut of software security—from managing security initiatives, to cloud security, to threat modeling and security architecture, to static analysis, as well as risk-based security orchestration and testing. John is keenly interested in software-defined security governance at the cadence of modern development. As a trusted adviser to security executives, he uses his unparalleled experience to build, measure, and mature security programs. He co-authors the BSIMM study and serves as co-editor of the Building Security In department of IEEE Security & Privacy magazine. John is regularly invited to speak and keynote. Jb Aviat: [00:00:14] So welcome to this episode of AppSec Builders. Today I'm proud to interview John Stevens. So, John is the founding principle at Aedify where he advises product security firms. John, before that, you led ZeroNorth as a CTO and before that you were leading as co-CTO at the Cigital firm. Welcome, John. John Steven: [00:00:36] Hello, how are you? Thanks for having me. Jb Aviat: [00:00:38] I'm great, thanks for joining. So John, another thing that you've done is that you co-authored BSIMM, so could you let us know what it is and how it can be a useful tool to AppSec builders? John Steven: [00:00:50] Yeah, it's worth clarifying because it's frequently misunderstood. The BSIMM is the building security in maturity model observational study. We went out and over a period of 11 years we've studied about two hundred and over two hundred firms and asked the question, what do you actually do to build your security initiative and to secure your software? And it doesn't prescribe what to do, but you can use it to look at what firms that are within your vertical or that look similar to you in terms of maturity, are doing with their time and money, and decide whether or not you want to replicate those behaviours or cut your own. Jb Aviat: [00:01:29] So you are interviewing like CISO application security practitioners, developers like every actor of the security game. John Steven: [00:01:38] Yes. Historically, the list has looked like what you described. What was interesting to us about the last two years of this study is that when we began talking with the CISO, they'd say, oh, you need to talk to the VP of Cloud on this, or actually you need to talk to the SREs and to to delivery or to the VP of engineering. The people we had to talk to fundamentally changed over the last two years. And that was a key finding that we we wrote about this year, that the people doing the work of security were shifting from the security group to the engineering, digital transformation and cloud groups. John Steven: [00:02:20] And that's a big deal, right, because there's been these phrases...
Welcome to part 3 of the final 2020 episode being under that Red Radar! Listen in as we discuss who is the most recognizable person in history, the problem with GTA V, and gross human body facts!

On January 23, 2005, Tammy Gardner called 911 to report that she’d been shot by her husband, John Steven Gardner. Tammy’s condition worsened and she lapsed into a coma prior to arriving at the hospital and died two days later. Gardner was arrested at the beginning of February and eventually charged with capital murder. Join Lisa O’Brien and Michael Carnahan on Tuesday, November 10, 2020, at 8:00 p.m. Central for Clear and Convincing Episode 23, State of Texas v. John Steven Gardner. We’ll talk about the evidence linking Gardner to Tammy’s murder, his trial, direct appeals and post-conviction claims. We’ll also talk about Gardner’s claim that the defense of “abandonment rage” would have resulted in a different sentence if it had been presented to his trial jury in 2006. Finally, we’ll talk about Gardner’s execution on January 15, 2020.

Never miss another interview! Join Devin here: http://bit.ly/joindevin. Regenerative agriculture is suddenly sexy. Practitioners have been advocating its use for more than a decade but only recently has it begun to catch media attention and with it the public imagination. Why now? Some might say that it is because we are just waking up to the gloomy reality that the planet and every person on it are at risk even if regenerative agriculture is successfully implemented and are almost certainly doomed if we don’t. Kevin Doyle Jones, co-founder of GatherLab and John Steven Bianucci, director of impact for Earth’s New Ways, are among the activists preaching the gospel of regenerative agriculture and they are finding an increasing number of adherents. Regenerative agriculture is not just organic but involves other techniques, like no-till planting and rotating grazing animals on the land, to help the soil retain moisture and carbon, improving yields and Be sure to watch the full interview with Kevin and John Steven in the player at the top of this article. Today's dynamic development landscape presents a nightmare for security experts, but short of "stopping the train," what can you do to ensure a proactive approach to security? In this engaging conversation, John Steven combines his abilities as a software developer with his expertise in security to help us avoid a reactive model and prevent breaches before they occur.
Information security, and the technologies that provide such security, are a very hot topic throughout the information technology and business communities today. This presentation opens with a consideration of the current network environment. It answers the questions "where are these technologies?" and "where are the gaps in the technologies that are being addressed?" especially as they impact security. Next, the presentation considers the field of network security technologies. It addresses the good, the bad and the undecided aspects of the field today. After setting the stage with this background information, the presentation identifies the most important trends that will impact the network security industry in the coming few years: the federal government finally cares, the vanishing network perimeter, and the opportunity to achieve ubiquitous encryption. Toward the end of the presentation, Dr. Reel presents two "killer" security-related applications. Finally, the presentation closes with a discussion of the major needs in the information security field. About the speaker: Dr. Reel has BS and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science. He spent over 9 years with the National Security Agency developing network-based software for deployment around the world. In 1995, he joined Trident Data Systems (now Veridian Corporation) in their San Antonio operation. For 3.5 years, he worked in an advanced research and development facility dedicated to information security technology development and assessment. Since September 1998, he has been the Chief Technology Officer of Veridian's Information Security business unit. In 1998 he and five teammates were awarded a patent on a new technology to protect communications circuits from malicious use. In addition to his dissertation, "Radiant Object-Oriented Analysis and Design", he has had one article published by IEEE Software Magazine (Critical Success Factors in Software Projects, May/June 1999). Further, he has given numerous talks and authored many white papers on IA/IO/IW/IP/IS concepts and technologies. Dr. Reel represents Veridian on the External Advisory Board for the Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS) at Purdue University. In addition, he serves as an advisor to the Security Panel of the President's Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) as well as the Emerging Technology Panel for the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce.
