Martin Butcher, he simply loves running. Martin will have a go at any distance from 5k to 96 miles...and he does. Martin describes himself as a lucky runner who has got to do so many things through running.Martins interest in running started as a result of a venture scouts trip of a lifetime to climb Mount Aconcagua (22,838 ft) in Argentina in the year 2000, and the fitness bug was caught. From Argentina to the Dunfermline half marathon in 2003 and the running journey continued from there to the present day.A massive part of Martins running journey is the connections and friends Martin has made. It's no surprise that Martin is a founding member of #teamlifeWe speak a lot about the West Highland Way during the chat, Martin has a deep love for that specific Scottish trail, but he will also happily run a mile in 4mins 52 10 days after running 53 miles!Supporting others who run is another passion of Martins, and he quite happily drives back and forth between checkpoints making sure his runner (and others) is fuelled and ready to go for the next section of the event.Martin describes his favourite event as the West Highland Way of 2023, and it's an edge of the seat listen as he describes the highs, lows and occasional diva moment along the way!Favourite film and book for Martin...Forrest Gump is the answer to both, maybe Forrest inspired the world famous Butcher Sprint, all is described by the man himself in this episode.A well kent face on the Scottish running scene, Martin is never shy to share a smile, a cuddle and words of encouragement to anyone who might benefit from one or all three.Inspirational too in so many ways for friends, family and people he may never even know. Martin is there for ya!An example...Paul Snelling Martin's cousin caught the bug after seeing what Martin was up to, and Paul is in the middle of running 31 marathons in 31 days raising funds for Zurich Community Trust. This week we welcome Fiona Russell to the podcast; you may know her better as Fiona Outdoors!Fiona helped us open many doors when we both started out ultra-marathoning. Her always entertaining takes on events and routes on her website doing more than enough to inspire us in to action! She's become a constant voice of support and positivity for not only running but outdoor activities in general, especially across Scotland. We're delighted to hear about Fiona's own running journey, her passion and desire to motivate others evident throughout. Not all is black n white when you're in conversation with Damian Hall. Want to find out more? Listen in. Damo makes a overdue and welcome return to the podcast this week as we catch up on what he's been up to and what lies ahead around the corner. Fresh off supporting many pals on the Winter Spine races and indeed test running a brand-new race to be introduced on the Spine he's s in usual cavalier mood. First, we find out a switch up in his sponsorship as he moves away from his historical association with Inov8 and over to something less normal. Then it's a crusade through a whole heap of stuff he's been up to and involved in. As you can imagine nothing sits still for this fella so we've much to discuss and muse upon. National Running Show appearances, training updates, upcoming races and plans. The big news, for us anyway, the revelation that we'll get an oppo to meet the man himself in Conniston come the end of July! We cover 'controlling the fade', the fade of what though? Intriguing enough to tune in to find out just what we are whittling on about on that one! We spend time discussing Into Ultra (see link below) an initiative Damo is a founding member of to give people access to participate in Ultra Marathon who may otherwise not be able to! And lastly, Damo is allowed not 1 but 2 songs into the famed YHRF Playlist, and both them are absolute belters! We could talk to this man all day long, but we manage to limit it to a solid hour or so, now quick, go a get yir lugs wrapped right roond it! Learn more about Into Ultra on their website https://intoultra.org.uk/homehttps://intoultra.org.uk/home
It would be amiss of us as part of our Winter Spine mop up not have a debrief with one of the winners, right? Step forward Lucy Gossage to fulfil that role. The ex pro triathlete and now (accidental) runner took the win after the toughing it out on the famed 268 mile race up the Pennine Way. We're mighty chuffed to hear her tell her tale of triumph through adversity as she nailed the race of her life at her 2nd attempt at the Spine, after all 2024 is so last year. Lucy picks up her tale of finding running during the covid pandemic, at a time when the world was a strange place and, for her personally, the end of a magnificent career in triathlon was drawing to a close. We're astounded to hear how much she's managed to raise for her charity Move Against Cancer and find out more about some of the magnificent work being undertaken to promote physical activity. Of course the 2025 Spine Race is the headline act and Lucy regales her journey through training, to the start line in Edale and on to a victorious conclusion in Kirk Yetholm. She's candid and open of the role personal heartache and betrayal played, on closing that chapter she's already started an exciting new one that she is evidently buzzing about. It's a terrific insight into the mind and motivation of an elite athlete who is so in touch with her own mindset. A story of transferring strength and resilience built through years of triathlon racing and applying it to a new discipline, just so happens that discipline is ultra marathoning. And aren't we the lucky benefactors of welcoming such prowess to the wonderful running community. Now, go get your lugs around this cracker, it does not disappoint. Find out more and make a donation to Lucy's charity MOVE AGAINST CANCER here
We catch up with our Yorkshire Correspondent Mel Sykes to talk all about her 268 mile traverse along the Pennine Way during the Montane Winter Spine Race 2025 Think 'challenging' weather, think sleep deprivation, think sleeping in public toilets and churches. Think Alston Lasagne! Mel replays her pre race thoughts and preparations, takes us on a detailed journey from Edale to Kirk Yetholm and reflects on the challenge and adventure of such an undertaking. This is an absolute belter of an episode, Mel done it for Yorkshire, Mel done it to inspire, Mel done it because..she is Mel Sykes, our Yorkshire Correspondent. Winter Spine Race...completed it mate.
It's taken a wee bit of organising to get Dr Jamie Pugh on the podcast. Jamie is a senior lecturer and researcher at Liverpool John Moores University, Jamie is also a coach at Centurion Running. An expert in nutrition and all things to do with the gut, Jamie shares golden nuggets aplenty that will benefit runners and athletes of many disciplines. Coached by Robbie Britton, Jamie has a wealth of running expertise under his belt too, from a first marathon (Nottingham Robin Hood marathon) to training simply for fun, Jamie now is more interested in the world of ultramarathons, and has his sights set on some big things. How do you run when you have ankles made of Weetabix as a result of football injuries? Jamie talks us through ankle rolls and how he copes with these and how the technical trails bring that heady mix of joy and challenges. Being a coach and having specific information is one of Jamie's passions, coaching for Centurion Running since 2023, Jamie looks to bring and share knowledge from academia and his own experiences to invest in athletes across an array of distances to help them achieve their dreams, this is a fascinating listen. Jamie's work at Liverpool John Moores University is all about understanding what can be done to make improvements (big or small) to athletes at all levels. We also talk a wee bit about muscle biopsy, say what? Find out more by listening in... Testing what works for himself and athletes takes us to chatting about what we put in our gut to fuel us during our running activities, does what we put in deliver what we need? Jamie explains it all perfectly, you may listen to this section more than once! The chat is a latest product up=to-date conversation full of golden nuggets from someone in the know, we talk about athletes aid station management, how to deal with nausea, do you remember the cartoon the Numbskulls, maybe a first ever mention on a podcast? Lots of food (pun intended) for thought in here in a perfectly timed episode as we move towards the running season to come. See what others are doing, that's cool, but it might not work for you, there's so many things to think about and it's all discussed in our chat with Dr Jamie Pugh. How much has sports science changed in the last decade, and what's to come for sports science in the future...we get Jamie's thoughts. There's chat too about Jamie's recent running and his tinkering with shoes to find out what works for him, and Jamie's dialect dictionary entry, a belter...
It's only the long awaited, much anticipated (and somewhat inevitable) appearance of Scottish track sensation Laura Muir! Our final guest of 2024. And we're off on our travels, the destination this episode is India. Bangalore to be exact, host city of the recent IAU 100k World Championships. Chris Richardson joins us to regale his epic Asian adventure First stop though is some where much more familiar as we get the lowdown from Chris on his performance at the 2024 Anglo Celtic Plate on the North Inch of Perth that clinched him a spot on the GB and Northern Ireland team for the worlds. We learn about what attracted Chris to turn his focus on the 100k distance, the dedicated training it take and find out how measured he is his race strategizing. With an impressive marathon PB tucked neatly in his back pocket Chris gives us a great insight in to the differences he's made to adjust to going for the 100k difference, the patience it takes and the mindset it requires. Of course we focus most of our time hearing from Chris as to how events unfolded in the heat of Bangalore. A scintillating team performance made for a hat full of accolades across the men's and women's teams. An individual performance from Chris equally as stunning. From overloading on curries to stumbling to the finish line and everything in between this is an epic listen from an honest, humble and authentic racing machine.
Sarah Perry makes her 2nd appearance on the podcast and we've plenty to catch up on Although Sarah feels most comfortable on hills and fells, she excelled at the Backyard Ultra during October's UK Team Championships. Sarah details her outstanding performance, starting from the beginning of the race alongside 14 teammates and concluding 59 hours later to secure victory. Her exceptional effort not only earned her the title of Team UK champion but also a spot in the Big Dog's Backyard Ultra Individual World Championships in 2025. Sarah will be heading to Tennessee for this prestigious event. In our chat, she outlines her strategy, hints at some personal tactics, and describes how her resilience was pushed to unprecedented levels. Could she have gone on longer though? We find that out from the horse's mouth. We also look back at some of her other 2024 adventures, focussing on a formidable personal challenge of setting a FKT on the South West Coastal Path. A staggering 630 miles journey! Just short of a fortnight's worth of running from Poole in Dorset to Minehead in Somerset. It's not flat either with an elevation amounting to 4 times the height of Mount Everest. Not one to shirk at challenges thathttps://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=6dxqdyZdSUeiAvCf7-EFkE4edRV4uY9Ph0p68YF2oY9UNVFCNTNaNlMyMkVDREtKSFFWVFIwVUpKRi4u&route=shorturlhttps://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=6dxqdyZdSUeiAvCf7-EFkE4edRV4uY9Ph0p68YF2oY9UNVFCNTNaNlMyMkVDREtKSFFWVFIwVUpKRi4u&route=shorturlhttps://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=6dxqdyZdSUeiAvCf7-EFkE4edRV4uY9Ph0p68YF2oY9UNVFCNTNaNlMyMkVDREtKSFFWVFIwVUpKRi4u&route=shorturl human capability Sarah is in fine form as she tee's up 2025 with some juicy hints! Just a top top episode from a world class athlete. Sarah Perry is only getting started.
It's not the time you run, it's the time you have. Think about that. This week we are joined by Karen Webber. She was reluctant to come on the podcast, we managed to twist her arm, we're so glad we perservered. Karen is, almost on a weekly basis, involved with running and racing from a very different perspective. Whether that is timing events with her hubby Matt or in her more well-known role, assisting at events with logistics, registration, check point manager and general all-round foul mouthed motivator! A familiar face (and voice) at most of Cockbain Events Ultramarathon The Hard Stuff events dotted around the UK our man John ran into Karen whilst taking on the Track 100. We are treated to tales from the other side, we find Karen's tough exterior give way for a kind-hearted and grateful member of a running community. A community which she cherishes being part of and one that has given her so much back in return. A peer into the mind of the rather wicked mind of Mark Cockbain allows new and unheard insight into some of the 'absolute bastard' of races he stages. Karen doesn't mince her words. We get a real flavour of the graft, endeavour and sheer commitment from those who help at the races we take part in happen. We find out about Karen's most important race role, the Landlady of the Stagger Inn at the Grand Tour of Skiddaw. We're left in awe as Karen, a self-confessed back of the packer with an impressive array of marathon finishes under her own belt, lets us know about some of the greatest ever performances she's witnessed. And we finish up under no illusion, all the races we discuss are achievable if the right training, mindset and race management. See this link if you dare take on a Cockbain Events Ultramarathon. The Hard Stuff? Yip
We said we'd take you on a global adventure in Season 12, and we're sticking to that promise! Our Des-tination this week is mainland Europe, and we're off on quite the adventure with this week's guest and long-time pal of the show Des Tinney. Des took on a huge personal quest recently by completing the Camino De Santiago in Northern Spain. 496 miles that is. He did so for a very special cause, and he's here to tell us all. We first find out what lit his fire to take on the epic route, his why. Before we are whisked off to Espana for a quite terrific debrief of Des's epic pilgrimage. We're glad to report that although the running content is plentiful we get time to focus on other matters close to our heart, like fountains that run with wine for instance. Raising money as part of his endeavour helped drive him along the multi-day and Des lets us know about his charity, The Celtic Foundation, and how inspiration drawn from their cause as well as the folks who donated helped keep him motivated to keep on trucking. Even when the going got tough! Tales of hostels with bunk beds as high as Ben Nevis, 3 course meals for 12 euros and making plenty of new pals top off this absolute belter of an episode. STOP PRESS: We also reveal the Season 12 Turning Japanese LeBuffBuff in our intro, don't hang about to grab the super limited edition headwear inspired by the Land of the Rising Sun! Our Season 12 globetrotting continues! We're of to LA baby, and we've got a date with a couple who are absolutely worth the trip! Billy and Hilary Yang take time out from their breathless schedule to take us through their phenomenal running story.Billy Yang, a YouTube sensation with a lot to answer for! Creating the fuel for many runners' trail running ideology with breath-taking cinematography and authentic story telling. Taking us to places we dream about running (and costing us a small fortune in making some of those dreams a reality!)To also get the opportunity to speak with Hilary was a chance we seized with two hands. A founder member of the Here for the Women's Race movement, a trailblazer with a magical podcast of her own. Mix in her own talent out on the trails and her 'day job' as an award-winning photographer. It's a heady concoction of awesomeness. To help your hosts contain their excitement we home in on their late summer trip to the UK. A 1000-mile road trip. A whistlestop tour of some of our fav places on the island we call home taking in South Wales, the Lake District and Skye. A unique take on the culture, the landscape and the people they met….oh and food, there's always food. We first clapped eyes on Jonny Wolf at the 10k Chilli Trail Race in Auchterarder in 2022 when the first three finishers crossed the line within 9 seconds of each other! Originally from Kelso in the Scottish Borders, Jonny and his partner Tess are now living their best lives in Canada, taking on adventures and exploring their new surrounding area. Happening across Trail Runner Nation podcast in 2017, a fire was lit and Jonny hasn't stopped running since. By his own admission, bit off a big first race, doing a 50k in Australia and then not running again for 5 years! Then back in Scotland in 2022 Jonny found himself helping out at the Ultra Trail Race in Skye with a certain Martin Heggie, and the rest as they say... In the last couple of years (yes it's as recent as that!) Jonny has hit a real purple patch with his running. Self-coached and taking in information from a variety of sources, making it his own and tweaking where required. Jonny's big inspirations are Ken and Janet (his Mum and Dad), Jonny speaks about how they have encouraged and supported him in his running journey. The main focus of our conversation is the Lost Soul 100 Miler which Jonny took part in (the day after his birthday) and won in September this year. Running in a new environment and getting the opportunity to put his foot on the line, did we mention bears and rattlesnakes? Dealing with the blistering heat, how do you cool yourself down, and stay cool? pssst...a SexyBuffBuff helps! Fully stocked aid stations always help and the Lost Soul 100 miler, delivering over a tonne of ice to the runners as well as food! Running with a smile is one of Jonny's mantras, try it...it really works, positive mental attitude makes a difference! We also hear about the Moose Mountain Trail Marathon, Jonny won this race too, and what a prize he has received for his hard work! Listen in for a wonderful tale of a love or running, it's humbling, it's beautiful, it's Jonny Wolf. Enjoy. Lost Soul Ultra Moose Mountain Trail Marathon

We take a momentary break from the 'Danger Zone' this week for a much-needed catch-up with your hosts. No guest, but we throw a curve ball by posing 3 questions a piece to each other. Mixing things up, ken. The kettle is just off the boil, mon in for a chill. Whether you want to hear about John's latest scran plan, looking for alternative races for 2025 or want to hear Stevie Boy's thoughts on who's making the biggest splash in the world of ultra running. We've also a race or not plus a round-up of the latest running-related happenings that have caught our eye. It's Young Heart Guest Free. It's the way we started this whole thing back in 2020. Just roll with it...
We've met some great folks along the way whilst doing this podcast malarkey. This week's guest sits comfortably in that bracket. Dan Bentley is that man, you may have seen some of his work on your social channel timelines over the last few months. Dan, a jogger, an ultra-runner and a helluva photographer. In traditional YHRF style we first get to find out about Dan's own running. Just what led him to inadvertently bump into your hosts? Then it's on to speak about Dan the man behind the lens. His work has always caught our eye, this year he has taken that to another level with a stunning collection of ultra-marathon finish pictures. These portraits are more just a photo to be proud of, they tell their own individual stories of endeavour, of grit, of achievement. Dan leads us through his thoughts on how he captures the raw emotion at finish lines, how these hard-hitting race pics end up being the pride and joy of their subjects. Dan has stories to tell a plenty, it's his style, and we love it. He's had the privilege to rub shoulders with some iconic people but we're pretty sure he'd rather spend 36 hours cold wet in a gazebo avoiding midges, scavenging scran chasing that image of you at your moment of glory! See more of Dan's work on his website here https://www.danbentleyphotography.com/ Follow Dan and get a regular dose of his work on Insta here https://www.instagram.com/danbentleyphoto/

Candi Staton is arguably one of the best, and most underrated, soul singers in history. While Aretha and Gladys and Diana were getting most of the attention, Candi was consistently recording incredible music whether it's deep r&b in Muscle Shoals, disco smashes like "Young Hearts Run Free", or quality gospel music. She remains one of the finest interpreters of music ever and she joins us this week to discuss her storied career including starting out on the chitlin circuit, her approach to making a song her own, and her association with Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker back in the day. We're so lucky she's still here, sounding great, and making new music! www.candi-staton.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

Neil, who previously repped for Scotland cycling in the Commonwealth Games, starts by giving us his running story. What from his cycling background he's used in the world of ultra running and how the goalposts moved rapidly for him on how far and fast his legs could take him. A sense of togetherness and camaraderie is plentiful as Neil leads us through his attempt, from planning, logistics, and prep before getting on to the day itself. Support crew, we speak about tons, Neil had quite the epic backing in his attempt from his pals. A hearty band of adventurers compiled of his running pals. We said we'd be back to unpack our Lakeland 100 weekender, let's go! Dusting ourselves off after another everlasting weekend in the Lake District John, Stevie Boy and Mel Sykes sit down for the big debrief! We've plenty to cover. It proved to be a tough race for both John and Mel as the course threw all it had at them. Their outcomes differed with John battling injury and Mel battling the downright rude terrain. We get tore into in typical warts n all fashion. Kicking off with pre-race vibes, meeting pals old and new, and start line feels. Who forgot what? Did John leave his world-famous undercarriage obliterators at home?!? Then we're onto the main event, 105 miles of Lake District paths awaited. How did it pan out for our intrepid duo? What weather curveballs got chucked their way? How did they cope with the arduous terrain? Did they come a cropper and end up on the DNF bus back to basecamp? There's hunners of tails from the trails to cover before we reach what is a best-in-class finish line back in Coniston. The fun doesn't stop at the finish line though, no no no, this last weekend in July has turned into quite the spectacular for us so we can't not make time to have a good old blether about some memorable post-race celebrations. Whether you've ran, plan to run or even if we've even peeked your interest in either the Lakeland 50 or Lakeland 100 our chat will have you laughing and a bit greety all at the same time. These are the halcyon days we'll look back on, now mon in and let us share our weekend adventuring with you!

Candi Staton and others celebrate this 1970's disco classic which delivers an optimistic message. Written by David Crawford and released in 1976 this is the kind of song that feels like a carefree celebration, something to lose yourself in on the dancefloor. But its story isn't quite so simple. As Candi tells Soul Music, Young Hearts Run Free was influenced by her own troubled and abusive relationship which she struggled to leave. In fact the creation of the song helped her gain the confidence to finally walk away. Other contributors are: Singer songwriter, Glen Hansard. He performs the song 'as' his mother because it reminds him so much of what the song meant to her. Ziggi Battles , a singer who chose to cover the song as a way of rejoicing in the role it played in recovering from a very difficult time. Jason Gilkison, the Creative Director of Strictly Come Dancing. It will forever remind him of the first time he choreographed a group dance for Strictly at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom. His grandfather had danced there himself as a young man, before establishing the first dance school in Perth, Australia, which is where Jason developed his own love of ballroom dancing. Neil Brand, composer and broadcaster, analyses why the piece works musically. He also describes the pure joy of a version by Kym Mazelle and - unlikely as it seems - the actor and opera singer, Paul Sorvino. It was used as the soundtrack to the ballroom scene in Baz Luhrmann's film of Romeo and Juliet. Versions used: Candi Staton; Glen Hansard; Maz O'Connor; Ziggi Battles; Gloria Estefan; Kym Mazelle; Kym Mazelle (Ballroom Version) with Paul Sorvino Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Karen Gregor
