Today we discuss many topics related to managing the mental side of performance in difficult situations. Our guests train special forces candidates to get through the demanding selection process. What can we learn from those who do hard things? Topics such as the big five personality traits, emotional regulation, using humor to blunt the effects of hardship, and who survives, who fails, and why. Building the Elite www.buildingtheelite.com If you're reading this, you are likely pursuing a challenging path. BTE was founded to help people like you develop the skills you'll need to overcome those obstacles as efficiently as possible. Both of us (Craig and Jonathan) have overcome many needless obstacles that could have been avoided with a more robust approach. As we struggled with these setbacks, we tried to understand why they were happening, and how to avoid or overcome them more effectively in the future. After ten years of research and helping thousands of clients with the tools we've developed along the way, we founded BTE to share that knowledge with people like you. The process and principles outlined in our book and throughout our site aren't limited to the small world of military special operations. These principles will help you get more out of every aspect of your life. Craig Weller Craig is a former USN SWCC (Special Warfare Combatant Crewman). Along with Jonathan Pope, he co-founded Ethos Colorado Training Center, a full-service strength and conditioning facility based in Denver. Prior to that, he founded Barefoot Fitness in South Dakota, with two training facilities based on minimalist principles developed while training SOF personnel in austere locations. Jonathan Pope Jonathan is a strength and conditioning coach based out of Denver, Colorado with over ten years of coaching experience and a BS in Exercise Science. Along with Craig, he co-founded Ethos Colorado Training Center in 2010, where he is the lead coach and oversees operations. Today I'm talking with the Emmy Nominated Cinematographers of Netflix's zeitgeist Documentary THE SOCIAL DILEMMA. It's a hybrid film that blends documentary footage with a narrative film seamlessly, and pulls back the curtain on the insidious business of social media. We talk about their very different paths to becoming filmmakers, how collaboration with their director and actors is really what sets filmmaking apart from any other art form, and how they didn't meet each other until the premiere of the film! It's a great talk, enjoy! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Today we're talking about “The Social Dilemma”, a documentary about the manipulative and dangerous aspects of our online social activity currently streaming on Netflix. My guests are the Emmy-nominated cinematographers, John Behrens and Jonathan Pope, who split oversight of the documentary and narrative portions of the film but share responsibility for the cohesive look and feel.
Special Operations and Business… what do the two have in common? In today's episode of the Raw CEO, the team interviewed the founders of Building the Elite. Craig Weller and Jonathan Pope have developed systems and tools designed to increase the completion rate of Special Op's Forces applicants up to 90%, from a drop-out rate initially of 70%. However, what they have come across in their experience, is that the mindset development of these SOF's and career-driven CEO's with their teams are strikingly similar. In this episode, we discuss in detail what these similarities are, as well as some in-practice theories. One of the most memorable episodes to date, we hope you enjoy it! I chat with Craig Weller and Jonathan Pope the founders of Building The Elite. Their main gig is prepping candidates for special operations selections. But there's a lot of crossover between what they do and prepping for backcountry fitness. We talk about appropriate ruck training, mental skills, adaptability, and how to actually train instead of just beating yourself into the ground all the time. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/human-predator-packm/message
Jonathan and Craig are the co-authors of Building the Elite, a book which details the system they've used for over a decade to train people for special operations selection in half a dozen countries with a success rate over 90%. They also co-own Ethos Colorado, a performance training facility based in Denver, Colorado. Jonathan began his coaching career as a former collegiate athlete on the wrong side of six different surgeries. He learned how to develop athletes with an eye toward long-term resilience while he was in the process of rebuilding his own physical performance. He's now a competitive BJJ grappler and a backcountry ski mountaineer. Craig is a former US Navy SWCC and private military contractor who learned the value of skill acquisition in stressful environments when he joined the Navy without knowing how to swim and volunteered for special operations selection. In this episode Craig and Jonathan talk about: How they created building the elite. The common pitfalls when preparing for SOF Selection. What we do is we make these teeny tiny decisions all day long and we don't even realise it. All day long these tiny decisions that take you so far off track. And then you wake up like I did, and you look at your life and you think, how the hell did I get here? And you have no idea. It has never been so easy to spend the best hours of your days chasing distractions. You can be distracted or you can get epic work done, you can't do both. Some people, they can't focus anymore. The victim is addicted to distraction. The leader is monomaniacaly focussed on a few things. So they do not dilute the bandwidth of their focus, their energy, and their potential. I'm suggesting to you, you don't build a wide life, and you don't build a wide career, but you go really really deep. You got to stay in your lane. You gotta keep the main thing the main thing, you got to stay on your mission and not be distracted. You know what you have to do. You're paid to be where you need to be, and don't let anybody distract you from getting your job done. You're paid for what you do and for what you produce, and not for what you're distracted from doing. Divorce yourself from the heard. Get serious about this. This is your game. This is your life. And before you know it, you will be at the end, we all know that life goes by in a blink. Start the process of breaking your addiction to distraction today. Think about where you spend your time. Is it being wasted or is it being utilised? Handle the stuff in front of you, and find every area of your life where you're just like, gosh, I'm spending a lot of time doing this stupid stuff, and get rid of it. So you end up just wasting no energy on things that don't matter, and focussing all your energy on things that actually matter. When you understand that you always have a choice to go from autopilot to decision maker, everything in your life will change. Because you will realise the amount of garbage that you put in the way of your hopes, of your dreams, of your potential. Everything comes down to the decisions that you make.
