In an enlightening discussion, Floyd Marshall Jr., host of A Conversation With, delves into the vital topic of Black films and their creation with special guests: Christina Richardson, Letia Solomon, and Tobi Gadison. The roundtable conversation brings a critical lens to the question: Who should be making Black films? It explores the responsibilities of filmmakers from all backgrounds when it comes to representing Black stories, culture, and communities on screen. A Glimpse into the Guests Christina Richardson, an award-winning director and filmmaker, shared her journey from a child actress to a sought-after director. Her passion for authentic storytelling has driven her to work with top brands like Walmart, McDonald's, and Meta. Christina now directs branded content and narrative projects, focusing on showcasing diverse stories through her unique lens. Letia Solomon, a chemical engineer turned filmmaker, has worked on major productions such as ABC's Station 19 and created award-winning short films. A committed storyteller, Letia champions bold and underrepresented narratives that challenge and expand the scope of what Black films can be. Tobi Gadison, an actor, producer, and director, emphasized his path in both film and theatre, having landed roles in major movies like Ray and The Dukes of Hazzard. Tobi has channeled his passion for the arts into mentoring and community outreach, providing pathways for others to break into the entertainment industry. Should Black Stories Be Told Exclusively by Black Filmmakers? The core question posed in the podcast centers on whether Black films should only be created by Black filmmakers. Marshall Jr. noted that while Black filmmakers have a unique cultural insight, the conversation isn't about excluding other voices but rather ensuring accurate and respectful representation when others tell Black stories. Christina Richardson echoed this sentiment, stating, “When you don't have Black people telling their own stories, you run the risk of perpetuating stereotypes. We have so many untold stories, and without authentic voices, those stories become repetitive and inauthentic.” Richardson emphasized that diverse perspectives on set—both behind and in front of the camera—are key to producing well-rounded, robust narratives. Diversity in Filmmaking: A Necessity Letia Solomon shared her experiences in various production environments, from working with Shondaland's Station 19 to smaller, independent films. Solomon praised Shondaland's commitment to diverse writers and directors, which she felt significantly contributed to the authentic portrayal of Black experiences on the show. “When you have diverse voices, you get a more accurate reflection of the world,” Letia said. She also mentioned that while diverse representation in writers' rooms is increasing, there is still a long way to go. The Cultural Responsibility of Filmmakers Tobi Gadison highlighted the responsibility non-Black filmmakers hold when they choose to tell Black stories. He noted, “If you're not Black but you're making a Black film, it's essential to collaborate with Black creatives to ensure the authenticity of the narrative.” Tobi stressed that it's not about barring anyone from creating, but ensuring that cultural nuances and lived experiences are portrayed accurately and respectfully. Moving Forward: The Future of Black Cinema As the conversation unfolded, all three guests agreed that the future of Black films lies in collaboration, education, and diversity. Filmmakers, whether Black or not, must understand the significance of their roles in shaping cultural narratives. Christina Richardson summarized it well: “We're entering a beautiful era of filmmaking where more of us are being empowered to tell our stories. The key is ensuring that we're doing so authentically and with care.” --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/aconversationwithfm/support

Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues   Artwaves Wil Haygood, author of Colorization: One Hundred Years of Black Films in a White World, in conversation with host Richard Wolinsky. Colorization looks at the history of Hollywood from the perspective of the African American community, from protests over the showing of the racist silent film, “Birth of a Nation,” to the first great Black director, Oscar Micheaux, through the forties and the rise of black actors such as Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte and Dorothy Dandridge, to so-called Blaxploitation films and up to the present, all the while putting the films in context of the larger society and race in America. In the interview, he discusses the origins of the book, the careers of some of the Black pioneers in Hollywood film, and the way television and streaming has changed the race equation in our culture. Wil Haygood is a journalist who spent several years with the Washington Post before writing a series of biographies. He is also known for an essay in the Post which became the source for the successful film, Lee Daniels' The Butler. Complete 42-minute interview.   Bookwaves Second of two parts: Dennis Lim, film critic and Artistic Director of the New York Film Festival and author of “Tale of Cinema,” an examination of the work of South Korean film-maker Hong Sang-soo, in conversation with host Richard Wolinsky. It's a big week in Black cinema as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hit theaters Friday. But on the same day, another film dropped that may be just as powerful in its message about Black moviemaking. Is This Black Enough For You? pays homage to the decades of creativity that made the celebrated Marvel movie possible – and deeply influenced cinema as we know it. Host Brittany Luse sits down with Elvis Mitchell, the longtime film critic who directed the documentary. They dig into the ingenuity of Black filmmakers through the 1960s and '70s, the overlooked contributions of Blaxploitation films and the one Black classic that led to the demise of an era. Then, Brittany talks about a different kind of homage with Bashir Salahuddin and Diallo Riddle – the brains behind the sitcom South Side and the variety show send-up Sherman's Showcase. The comedy duo reveal why writing jokes around specific references can appeal to all kinds of audiences, and how parody can be a form of love. This week we are joined by archivist Jacqueline Stewart and historian Tyree Boyd-Pates to discuss the power of museum curation. The role of the museum curator is critical to the way that museums are experienced. We begin by discussing museums as “safe spaces for dangerous ideas” – in other words, how museums can be harbingers of racist and colonialist rhetoric when spaces are improperly curated. Museums can not only present history through materials, but also have the power to represent the present materials. We then discuss how museums can be spaces of change through seeing not only more presentation of anti-colonial materials, but also seeing those materials represented through an anti-colonial gaze. The guests stress the importance of having more African American curators in order to not only tell the history of a people, but of the community as well.Jacqueline Stewart is film scholar, archivist, curator and a Professor in the Department of Cinema and Media Studies and the College, Director of Arts + Public Life at the University of Chicago. She is also the Chief artistic and programming officer at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles. She also serves as an appointee to the National Film Preservation Board and hosts Silent Sunday Nights on Turner Classic Movies.Stewart is also the author of Migrating to the Movies Cinema and Black Urban Modernity and William Greaves Filmaking as Mission, and is an editor of L.A. Rebellion Creating a New Black Cinema.Tyree Boyd-Pates is a historian, speaker,  and museum curator at the Autry Museum of the American West as the Associate Curator of Western History. He previously held the position of History Curator and Public Program Manager at the California African American Museum. He began his career as a Professor of Africana Studies at California State University Dominguez Hills. He has curated shows for notable institutions such as the Smithsonian, the LA Philharmonic, The Getty, and more. A full transcript of this episode will be available soon! Here are some of the references from this episode, for those who want to dig a little deeper:“Where Are the Jews?”Black Films at TCMBlack Cinema at the Academy Museum“Oscars So White”Iris BarryLewis JacobOscar MicheauxAnna May Wong ; Academy Series Academy Museum PodcastMaking  film history more inclusiveRacism in AnimationGene AutryCommunity CurationShare your thoughts via Twitter with Henry, Colin and the How Do You Like It So Far? account! Blacks have historically been portrayed in films as pimps, hustlers, prostitutes, maids, gang-bangers, drug addicts, alcoholics, junkies and crime-ridden thieves. Though filmmakers would describe these roles as simply reflecting life's realities in technicolor. But were these depictions, subconsciously, impacting the essence of Black creativity, culture and identity for decades to come? Join I SEE U host Eddie Robinson for a provocative and very candid conversation with one of the only living cast members of the 1972 hit film, SUPER FLY – Sheila Frazier. The actress and former model speaks unguarded about how a White-male dominated film industry earned so much money at the expense of those character portrayals.
