ANCAP have released a stricter vehicle safety criteria for 2023, which includes an alert system that detects when a child has been left alone in a locked car. Josh Dowling, National Motoring editor at Drive.com.au told Mark Gibson on Perth Live that ANCAP is also mandating that cars need to be able to detect whether a child is in front of or behind a car. "We've learnt over the 10-15 years that car companies have gotten very good at protecting the occupants after a crash has occurred - and what they're trying to do now is prevent the crash from happening in the first place," Mr Dowling told Mark. "We've tested quite a number of cars already that actually tell you to check all seating positions, so I am not sure if they'll wire it to senses neseecillary - but a few cars already do it for when you press the off button and you get that alert because sadly, we have seen instances on the news where people have forgotten their kids in the backseat."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Michael is joined by Josh Dowling, National Motoring Editor of Drive, regarding the suggestion that Australia's capital plans to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles starting from the middle of next decade. It's been widely reported that the ACT Government will release a strategy document later this week detailing a plan for 80 to 90 per cent of 'light vehicle' sales – passenger cars, SUVs and light commercial vehicles such as most utes and vans – to be electric by 2030. This will reportedly be followed by a move to "phase out" light vehicles in the territory "from 2035".See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Josh Dowling, CarAdvice National Motoring Editor, joins Michael with his views on reports that Mercedes-Benz dealers in Australia are taking legal action against the German car giant over a new fixed-price business structure. Mr Dowling writes, ‘The introduction of a radical business structure that enables car companies to set fixed prices for new vehicles in Australia – removing the ability of customers to negotiate a deal and drive a bargain – is set to be tested in the Federal Court.' ‘The majority of Mercedes-Benz dealers across Australia – about 40 of the 50 dealer groups who operate 65 outlets nationally – have joined forces to take on the German car giant, launching legal action in the Federal Court after claiming they have been forced to accept new contract terms “with a gun to the head.”' See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
