Central College Senior Lecturer of History Mark Barloon and Central College History Club Co-President Eric Malcolm discuss the History Club's annual Range Day event coming up on April 22nd.
In this episode of Iron Sights After Dark, I sit down with Brandon Hernandez, Region 7 Director and Head of Training for the Texas Tactical Police Officers Association (TTPOA). Brandon is the guy responsible for organizing training for TTPOA members—primarily SWAT officers across Texas. While meeting with Brandon, I had the opportunity to go through Region 7's Basic SWAT School, an intense program that provides a foundational look at SWAT operations. We break down my experience in the course, how SWAT training has evolved, and the critical role TTPOA plays in equipping officers with top-tier instruction. We also talk about the TTPOA Annual Conference, happening this April in Round Rock, Texas. With 186 vendors, breakout sessions, and dedicated training days on the range, it's one of the biggest law enforcement training events of the year. -Timestamps:04:33 Introduction To TTPOA & SWAT Training05:31 Teamwork & Mental Fortitude06:50 Continuous Learning In Law Enforcement09:53 Career Insights & Training Standards39:41 PT & Honoring Fallen Officers44:49 Thor Hammers & Memorial March54:03 Classroom Sessions & Legal Briefings01:05:03 Range Day & Shooting Drills01:10:17 Vehicle Assaults & Team Bonding01:15:53 CQB Training & Physical Challenges01:21:47 Advanced SWAT Training01:41:27 Community Policing & Public Perception01:44:21 Final Thoughts & GratitudeRed Dot Fitness Training Programs:rdfprograms.comOnline Membership (Full Access To All Programs & Virtual Coaching):https://www.reddotfitness.net/online-membershipVirtual Coaching:https://www.reddotfitness.net/virtual-coachingSelf-Guided Programs:https://www.reddotfitness.net/Self-Guided-Programs1Connect With Us:Website - https://ironsightspodcast.com/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ironsightspodcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/

Riding Shotgun With Charlie #221 Mark Oliva NSSF, Managing Director of Public Affairs Heading down to Virginia for a few other shows, I was able to connect with Mark Oliva. He's been on my radar as a potential passenger for sometime. I met him last year at SHOT. You can't miss him. He wears a big cowboy hat. Many others do, too. But he has an NSSF badge that says “All Access.” We were able to meet at an “undisclosed location” in Northern Virginia. His job at NSSF takes him into DC regularly. We start off with some Range Day benefits, like Mark being able to figure out what he wants on his Christmas list. Then we cover talking about taking new folks shooting and shopping for their first gun. And why it's important for ranges to have family friendly facilities and not just a five gallon bucket for a portable bathroom. If we want to get more people into the shooting sports, then we need to make it more comfortable and enjoyable for them. If places aren't welcoming to women, he calls it the “hey, little lady complex.” He and his wife, a former Marine, went to one of those ranges and his wife outshoot everyone else in the class. Mark was born in New England and went into the Marine Corps right out of high school. He spent 25 years serving the country. He's lived all around the country while serving. And picked up a drawl living in the Carolinas. He got orders to work on Capitol Hill and then he was offered a position at the NSSF. Summing up one career into the other, he says that he went “from one big gun club to another.” With his current position at NSSF as the Managing Director of Public Affairs, he's on 24/7. He's got two phones; a personal and a work phone. When the work phone rings, he has to answer it. Any day. Any time. Because he has to be knowledgeable about everything that's going on, he says he knows “a lot about a lot of things but it's hard to drill down and become a subject matter expert.” His job in the military was also in public affairs, so this was an easy transition. He enjoyed talking about the Marines and wanted the same thing in his other career. I do love it when people say the 2A events around the country, SHOT, NRA AM, GRPC, are a family reunion. It is exciting to go to these events, but it's just as important to see and catch up with friends that we've made and the relationships we've built. Mark says the folks at the NSSF, no matter what they do, love hunting and shooting and keeping the firearm industry going and thriving. Mark talks about how he doesn't give any credence to the media who want to take our rights away. So he can and does have to be firm with them. With everything that is going on, he can't walk blindly into conversations with reporters. When he has these discussions, he's got to have the facts to refute some of the untruths that reporters throw at him. We talk about how big the industry is, but also about how small it is. He runs into people that are with one company, then move to another company doing the same thing. All these folks, the movers and shakers, know each other. It's a bit like the six degrees of separation. Or as I've heard it called, the Olympic rings of the gun community. I ran into Mark at SHOT last week. He was wearing a cowboy hat. Shocking, I know. He's all over making sure everyone is getting the things they need and taken care of. SHOT week is really the NSSF's Super Bowl of the shooting and outdoor industry. Everyone is on the go, on their feet, from sunup to way after sundown. And it's always a great week! Favorite quotes: “You come out to SHOT Show, you can't buy anything at the show. But man this is a great place to make a Christmas list.” “It was really easy and natural for me to have that kind of job, so why would I not want to do that in my next career?” “When it comes to the facts, you've got to have a good solid knowledge of those facts, and a handle on those facts.” “You've seen Justice Thomas repeatedly say that the lower courts are denigrating the Second Amendment to a second class right. And he's frustrated with it.” NSSF Website https://www.nssf.org/ NSSF Facebook https://www.facebook.com/NSSFcomm/ NSSF Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thenssf/ NSSF LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/company/national-shooting-sports-foundation NSSF YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/thenssf NSSF X https://x.com/NSSF Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/ Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters. We made the trek out to Templeton, Pennsylvania, for our second Human Trafficking Awareness Range Day event. If you've been listening for a while, you've no doubt heard us rave about the experiences we had last year, both good and bad. We doubled down on the experience this year and got a AirBnB and added two dudes to our crew. We split ourselves up and took even more individual courses than last year, and have a ton to speak on in this debrief conversation. From Breaching, to pistol grip and vision. to 2-Man CQB and precision carbine, there was so much we were able to learn and experience this year. All of that, coupled with getting to connect with, and meet, some truly stellar and exception people in our community, made this an incredible trip. Give this one a listen, see what you missed out on, and keep your eye on the HTA social media so you can make it out and join us next year!Visit our sponsors!Patreon - www.patreon.com/prepared_mindset_podCustom Night Vision - www.customnightvision.comOne Hundred Concepts - www.onehundredconcepts.comRMA Defense - www.rmadefense.com code 'PreparedMindset5' to save 5%

This month we welcomed Tracey Wilson, Vice-president of public relations for the Canadian Coalition for Firearms Rights (CCFR) to talk about National Range Day (June 1), a day created to recognize the 2.3 million licensed gun owners who responsibly, legally, and safely own and use firearms in Canada. Tracey has been a significant part of the CCFR team Since its inception and was one of the original incorporating directors. Her role and skills have grown over the years, making her a powerful, public-facing advocate. Tracey is the vice president of public relations for the CCFR and Canada's only in-house registered gun lobbyist. Her political influence and tenacious spirit make this lady an asset to the CCFR team and Canadian gun owners. Not only is Tracey the VP of public relations for the CCFR and their registered Lobbyist, but she is also a published author, having written articles for Women's Hunting magazines. Tracey and CCFR CEO Rod Giltaca can be seen regularly on the CCFR Radio Podcast and YouTube Channel with their “Week in Review,” and has graced SHE SHOOTS on a number of occasions to share her vast knowledge of Canada's gun communities and legislation. She is the original “CCFR Calendar Gunnie Girl” cover model and one of the CCFR Women's Program Executive team members. In her “free time”, Tracey can always be found at the range doing special events like National Range Days and Women's Introductory Range Days. And is a familiar face at Sports and Gun Shows like the Toronto Sportsman Show and TACCOM. Tracey is a mom, grandmother, a sports shooter, a seasoned hunter and Canada's one and only “Gun Goddess.”
Riding Shotgun With Charlie #201 Matt Mallory & Klint Macro Meet The Pressers It's always a great time to run into Matt & Klint from Meet The Pressers. We filmed a show at SHOT in 2020. And they let me use their car to film a couple other shows. This year we were able to film another show on SHOT's Range Day. Since our last show, Matt has been busy getting and giving training with Public Safety & Education, his training company. He offers several of the NRA and USCCA courses. But he is also a Master Instructor for SABRE Pepper Spray and for the TASER Civilian Course. He travels the country teaching these classes. Of course, he also offers several other training opportunities. Since the Bruen decision in June 2022, he's been doing the 18, yes EIGHTEEN, hour course to get a carry permit in New York. The NY Governor signed the Concealed Carry Improvement Act, or the Concealed Carry Improvement Atrocity as he calls it. He was able to take topics and lessons from his other courses to meet the 18 hour requirement and qualification. Some states like Massachusetts, have approved courses. States like New York have approved content in the course. Another new course is the Build Your Own 2A BeAR. You can build your own AR-15 style rifle, with a pinned magazine, which makes the rifle not an “assault weapon”. Matt offers about 95 different courses through PS&Ed, including teaching at the local police academy. Other than that, Matt and I have been doing a LIVE show on our YouTube channels. We're honored that Mantis and Next Level Training are our sponsors of the show. And we give away a Mantis X10 and a SIRT pistol every month. Klint is holding his own in the keeping busy department. He's had LASIK surgery on his eyes. Yes, it may seem weird to talk about eye surgery on a gun show. The reason he did it is because if someone broke into his home, got into a confrontation, and swiped his face and knocked his glasses off, he wouldn't be able to see them anymore. This is the outside of the box thinking that Klint does. He's also a consultant with the USCCA. They have him training the trainers all around the country. As a consultant for the USCCA''s official partners, he helps instructors build a training path for their clients. Some duties include helping with marketing and retaining clients. He's been working with them for years, but they offered him a position he couldn't turn down. He's also been able to keep his training company, Trigger Pressers Union, offering courses. He's doing classes with Personal Defense Network, running National Train a Teacher's Day, president of Allegheny County Sportsman League. He's the Vice President of Firearm Owners Against Crime. The most challenging part of all Klint's gigs is keeping his hats separated and on correctly. He can't speak for one group when he's representing a different one or speaking to a different group. Klint talks about how after the government lockdowns of 2020, there were lots of people making purchases and seeking out training. This was very different from previous generations of gun owners. People want to buy firearms and take some training not because its required, but because they want to know how to use their new guns safely. Often he'll tell folks to offer a basic course on having a firearm in the home and teach people how to be better consumers. Matt and Klint have a lot going on, individually and as a team. Between the courses locally and around the country, they're always on the go. You should take a course with either of them when they're in your area. And tell them Charlie said Hello! Favorite quotes: Matt: “It's a corrupt government in New York state… It's legalized crime.” Matt: “I'm not going to let them walk out with a certificate if they can't keep their finger off the trigger when it's important.” Klint: “All the stuff I had in place would mean nothing if you knocked off my glasses.” Klint: “I believe my purpose is to help empower my fellow Americans to exercise that Right to protect themselves and their families and to be their own first responders.” MTP Website https://meetthepressers.com/ MTP YouTube https://www.youtube.com/c/meetthepressers MTP FB https://www.facebook.com/MeetThePressers/ MTP IG https://www.instagram.com/meetthepressers Trigger Pressers Union https://triggerpressersunion.com/index.html Trigger Pressers Union https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063643621298 Trigger Pressers Union https://www.instagram.com/trigger_pressers_union/ PS & Ed Website https://psanded.com/ PS & Ed IG https://www.instagram.com/psandeducation/ PS & Ed FB https://www.facebook.com/psanded/ Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/ Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters. Green Beret Range Day is a fundraising event started by my friend Dillon, back in 2020 to bring folks together to shoot and train, while supporting The Green Beret Foundation. Fast forward a few years, and the event is going strong, and growing without signs of stalling or slowing. Dillon has created a unique experience based around bringing very skilled teachers and instructors together with folks who want to learn, and all to support this wonderful cause. The 2022 edition has just recently passed, so I jumped at the opportunity to grab Dillon's time, and get the low down on what all was offered and what plans are in the works for the future. Certainly a opportunity and experience unlike anything I've heard of, and something I implore everyone to look into. Give this one a listen, and then go sign up!

How Amanda Lynn Mayhew became the world's top female outdoor celebrity Amanda Lynn Mayhew is not like most people. Her energy seems to know no bounds. Between her company Just Hunt, TV show, running the Women's Hunting Association, being the official ambassador and host of the Great Outdoors Stage for the Toronto Sportsmen's Show, and her Range Day and Take Me Outreach Programs, she credits her athletic training for giving her the well-being and energy to stay so busy. Mayhew hasn't always been the hunter-athlete she is today. Her humble beginnings, a health scare in her 20s, and the challenges of being a single mom have given her the grit, determination, and experience that sets her apart as a hunter. From Necessity to Passion The story of how Mayhew became an ambassador for women in the hunting industry starts with her family. Growing up, her parents had to hunt and fish to put food on the table. Her parents set an example for her as people who looked to the great outdoors as a resource, not just recreation. “My parents would fish as much as they could to make sure our family had protein to eat,” Mayhew said. “For my dad, hunting a moose or bear would feed the family for a year with me, my mom, and my sister.” Hunting was an essential part of her upbringing that continues with her three sons. “Hunting is about the meat and food it provides. It always has been,” she said. “When I go on a hunt now, I come back and take the meat to my kids, who all have their own apartments, and share it with my dad, who is retired now.” The shift from hunting as a necessity to becoming an outdoor superstar happened unexpectedly. Amanda Lynn and Dad grouse hunting in 1976 “I never rolled out of bed and said, ‘I'm going to be on TV,'” Mayhew said. “A lot of people look at me and think that I came from money, or that I have a lot of money now. The reality is that I grew up in a trailer park, and I'm proud of where I came from.” Mayhew was a single mother in the late 90s with three boys to feed, so like her parents before her, she used hunting to provide high-quality meat for her family. Then in 1998, Mayhew was diagnosed with Graves disease. This auto-immune disorder wreaks havoc with your thyroid and can cause extreme exhaustion and weight management disorders, among other things. After trying medication and treatments to control the disease, Mayhew turned to fitness after undergoing radiation treatment. Seeing a commercial for the Total Gym featuring friend Chuck Norris, she decided to buy one and start exercising. Mayhew is stronger than ever thanks to the Total Gym. “I would work out 4-5 hours a day,” Mayhew said. Soon after, she moved back to northern Ontario. People noticed a change. “Here were people who had seen me as a girl, and as a single mother, and now I was ripped. I became really involved in the fitness community,” Mayhew said Two years after receiving her diagnosis, Mayhew had become a personal trainer and started her own fitness magazine. “I got tired of looking at magazines at the gym that were nothing but ads. So, I started a fitness magazine that focused on stories about how fitness was used to treat rare diseases and to bring awareness to rare diseases, like mine. No one had seen anything like it,” she said. Throughout this time, she still went hunting to feed her growing boys. Her publication soon got the attention of executives in the outdoor sporting industry. “I made friends with an editor of a magazine in Canada and was asked to be part of a women's panel at the Outdoor Show in Toronto, Ontario in 2011. From that day, it snowballed into what I do today,” she said. Mayhew became a representative for Bass Pro Shops, which lead to another role as Cabela's Ambassador for Canada. She simultaneously hosted a radio show called “Nothing but Outdoors” and was a co-host on a country music station. She would bounce back and forth between hosting country music events and hunting, all while holding a full-time day job with the provincial government. “Country artists are authentic hunters,” she said. “They talk about being in the outdoors and family. It is about involvement and family and friends. It's just pure fun.”

In this episode of the Talking Lead Podcast: Lefty and the BMMC Crew (Bold Moves Motorcycle Club) talk about our 11 day, 2020 miles, epic road trip to Sturgis, SD for Gunfest during the 82nd Motorcycle Rally. Joining Lefty to tell the madcap road trip adventures is Chad Enos and Ty Mericle with Kel Tec Weapons, Rick Stewart and Gabe Wren with American Zealot Productions and a surprise visit from the Squatch. This was the first year of the Gunfest Range Day event. Vendors which attended were Kel Tec Weapons; IWI US; Sig Sauer; Springfield; Walther; Gunbroker; Silencer Central to name a few. It was held at the Buffalo Chip in Sturgis, SD. Although attendance was thin, due to the lack of advertising and miscommunication between Gunfest organizers and the Buffalo Chip organizers, it has the potential to be one of the premier Range Day events in the Industry. We discuss some of the things they got right and the areas that need improvement. Talking Lead Podcast - "Leaducating The Unleaducated" since 2012

Have you ever wondered what the mindset of others before self could obtain? Well Average Joes Range Day is an example of individuals who came together for the betterment of others. We had the opportunity to spend the day hanging at Triple C Range for Average Joes Range Day. To say we were blown away with this group of individuals is such an understatement. We always say Uncommon, but what was special about this day was the common goal of individuals coming together through community. One person, one round at a time, relationships were built. How can we change the culture? How can we become better? How do we reach the unknown? Well the answer is events such as Average Joes Range Day. It wasn't about race, gender, status, or where you came from, it was about coming together to become better. If you listened to episode 19 with Jimmy Rodriguez you would hear the sincerity of the OG's and in the creation of this event. If only more people took time out of their day to create positive influences through relationships. You want to change the world, you start with one average person at a time. Thank you to everyone for allowing us to come out and highlight this movement. And yes this is a movement, a movement uncommon in and of itself. Thank you to our sponsors for this episode, Triple C Range and Triarc Systems. You can find links to their websites below. The music you heard on today's episode is brought to you by Nothing More.
