Yo no… ¡y a precio asequible!

Mazda has made its name creating cars that enthusiast drivers love, and we have two examples of that this week in our road test segment — the Mazda MX-5 Miata and the Mazda3. Of course, the Miata needs no introduction. For decades, it has been a go-to renowned for its sharp handling and perky, fun-to-drive demeanor. But is it the right choice for Maine on the edge of winter? Co-host Chris Teague will have his thoughts on that. Across the country in more pleasant climes, Host Jack Nerad got a weeklong stint in the Mazda3 2.5T Premium Plus AWD, the highest-end version of Mazda's highly praised compact sedan. He discovered that the Mazda3 continues to combine performance, luxury, and advanced technology in a surprisingly affordable package. Featuring a 2.5-liter SKYACTIV-G turbocharged engine, it delivers 250 horsepower and puts that power to good use via its all-wheel drive and G-Vectoring Control Plus. Its sleek exterior boasts 18-inch black alloy wheels and LED lighting, while inside, black leather-trimmed seats, heated front and rear seats, and a dual-zone climate control system provide a premium-brand experience. Then there's the infotainment system. The Mazda3 has a 10.25-inch display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system, but does its idiosyncratic control scheme spoil what is otherwise a stellar potential purchase? Jack and Chris will give their thoughts. In the news this week, those seeking a battery-electric pickup will find Tesla's Cybertruck is making waves with its new lease pricing. We'll have details on if the deal is as good as it first seems. Jaguar continues on its controversial way, unveiling the jaw-dropping Type 00 concept. It blends futuristic design with electric luxury to deliver something both new and remarkably retro. Chris and Jack have their reactions to a vehicle that some describe as shocking. Also in the news, Hyundai has just introduced its first three-row electric SUV, the Ioniq 9, showcasing versatility, tech innovation, and sustainability. With Nerad in attendance, Volkswagen pulled the wraps off the newest iteration of its Tiguan compact SUV, Genesis unmasked its 2025 GV70 crossover, and Ford has announced its Ford Mustang GTD supercar will be the subject of a short film available this coming week. Our special guest this week is Steve Center, Kia America chief operating officer. Host Jack Nerad sits down with him for a wide-ranging discussion on the future of EVs in America, the upcoming regulatory climate, and,of course, Kia's newest vehicles, two of which were unveiled at the Los Angeles Autio Show. In this week's Listener Question, Tony from Fresno asks if buying a used hybrid is a smart move amid rising gas prices. Jack and Chris dive into the pros and cons. Mazda MX-5 Miata, Subaru WRX TR Keynote Joy of Driving Week

America on the Road

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 12, 2024 43:27

This week America on the Road proves yet again that there is more to driving than just getting from Point A to Point B in a thoroughly rational but also thoroughly uninvolving crossover SUV. We experienced this firsthand as we road-tested two exceedingly enjoyable sports cars — the legendary Mazda MX-5 Miata and the almost equally legendary Subaru WRX. The 2024 WRX TR trim that Co-Host Chris Teague tested offers improved performance and handling from its rally-inspired chassis and suspension. It features a Brembo braking system with six-piston front and two-piston rear calipers, larger pads and rotors, and a larger brake master cylinder. Suspension enhancements include stiffer springs, revised damping rates, and a retuned steering rack for better control and response. The TR comes with 19-inch satin gray alloy wheels and Bridgestone Potenza S007 summer tires. Inside, it has Recaro seats with black and gray Ultrasuede, red stitching, and an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat. With its six-speed manual transmission, the 2024 WRX TR is base-priced at $41,655. How does it compare to Teague's GR Corolla? He'll tell us in his report. Across the country, Host Jack Nerad got the chance to test the 2024 MX-5 Miata Grand Touring trim, which received significant updates enhancing performance and comfort. Powered by a 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder engine delivering 181 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque, the MX-5 Miata retains its classic front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. The Sport and Club trims come exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission, while the Grand Touring we tested offers either a manual or a six-speed automatic. In addition to Kinematic Posture Control, the Miata now offers a revamped electric power steering system with a new steering rack and software enhancements for smoother steering and better precision. Exterior updates include new LED headlights and taillights and additional color options. Inside, the 2024 Miata features a revised center console, an 8.8-inch infotainment display with added touch functionality, and Mazda's first Alexa integration. But does all this new stuff blunt the winning Miata experience? Nerad will have the answer in this show. In the news this week, Honda has given an in-depth briefing about its upcoming all-new lineup of electric vehicles, and the concepts are startling. We'll give you the details. General Motors has just ditched a major brand name as it does an about-face in its electric vehicle strategy. We'll tell you what brand they are turning their back on and give you our comments. If you are thinking about buying a new car soon, you should be aware that a substantial percentage of buyers are now taking on massive monthly payments when they make a purchase. Will you be one of them? And in the True Crime Files Automotive Edition, there is a new development in the trial of a major figure in the Volkswagen Dieselgate scandal. Is there prison in his future? This week, our special guest is Chevrolet bicyclist safety expert Mike Fry. The new Chevy Traverse has a system that is particularly useful in preventing vehicle-bicycle accidents, and we'll talk with him about that and about bicycle safety. We think you'll enjoy the discussion. So we have a lot of show for you this week. Thanks for joining us, and don't forget to look for new content on our YouTube and Rumble channels. Mazda launched its fourth generation, or ND as MX-5 fans would call it, almost a decade ago. Shaving weight from its NC-generation predecessor, this MX-5 excelled at what Miatas do best: be fun. Along the way, Miata squeezed more power and moved the redline of its 2.0-liter I4. The most recent group of upgrades usher in the ND3-era, or the third update for the ND-generation, and brings along some interesting hardware. While the powertrain is unchanged, Mazda stuffed a new limited-slip differential at the rear of Club models. The company also revised the steering system to increase steering feel even further with a new steering rack. Mazda also revamped its media system, which now features an 8.8-inch touchscreen.  On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you on a tour of the '24 Mazda Miata that highlights some of the new features and explains what it's like to live with. Later, Wren will take you along for a live drive review of the updated MX-5. Adding to the show, Wren chats with Autoweek's Patrick Carone about the latest Mazda MX-5, how the changes affect Mazda's beloved sports car, and more. Closing the show, the pair breaks down what makes the 2024 Mazda MX-5 RF special.

France's plugin electric vehicle (EV) market share reached 23.8% in February, with full electrics driving the growth, while traditional combustion-only powertrains declined to 49%. The Dacia Spring remains the best-selling full electric, followed by Tesla's Model Y and Peugeot e208. Mazda North American Operations reported its best-ever February sales in the US, while the newly introduced Mazda MX-30 electric vehicle (EV) is not selling well in the US with only two sales in February. A minority German political party, the Free Democratic Party (FDP), is attempting to block the EU regulation to ban internal combustion light vehicles by 2035. The FDP wants biofuel-powered vehicles to be exempt, hoping to support the German car industry, but the EU regulation is necessary to ensure the transition to fully electric vehicles. General Motors (GM) has announced its partnership with Samsung SDI to build a joint venture plant in Michigan, USA, marking the company's second partnership with an automaker in North America. The plant will have an annual production capacity of 50 GWh. Li Auto is building an 800 V high-voltage supercharging station in China, indicating preparations for a transition to pure electric vehicles. The company plans to accumulate 3,000 supercharging stations by 2025. Tesla has reduced the price of new inventory Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in Europe by 1.5% to 7%, with savings varying across different countries. This likely comes as Tesla looks to increase its market share in the competitive European market, following similar strategies it has implemented in China. Tesla will start selling the Carbon Ceramic Brake Kit for the Model S Plaid, enabling the sporty sedan to reach its advertised top speed of 200 mph. The kit will cost $20,000 and is expected to be released in limited quantities. Tesla is recalling 3,470 Model Y cars due to an issue with seat bolts that could affect the seat belt system in a collision. Unlike previous recalls that could be resolved via over-the-air software updates, this recall requires a physical fix. Our Next Energy has been selected by BHE Renewables to provide energy storage units to a solar-powered manufacturing hub in West Virginia worth $500 million. The EV battery startup will also build a factory on the site to assemble more battery storage systems. EverCharge and PassKey are collaborating to develop a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to supplement EverCharge's EV charging stations. The BESS will be used to consolidate power during off-peak hours and deploy the energy via EV charging stations during periods of high demand. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology, which is prevalent in China, is gaining ground in the US electric vehicle market as manufacturers look to embrace its cheaper cost and safety, despite holding less energy per pound than nickel-rich batteries. Our Next Energy will begin producing LFP batteries in Michigan this month, expanding next year after opening a new $1.6bn plant, and by 2027, it intends to supply enough LFP batteries for 200,000 EVs. Incoming Toyota CEO Koji Sato is calling for big changes in the way Toyota does business after the company acknowledged that Tesla has leapfrogged them in battery-powered cars, inspiring Toyota to regroup and find better solutions. Toyota is already working on a new EV platform to go into production in 2026. Greenpeace has lodged a complaint with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) accusing Toyota Australia of greenwashing, claiming the car manufacturer's claims about its environmental credentials are misleading. The complaint comes after an ACCC review found that 57% of 247 Australian companies reviewed had made "concerning" claims about their environmental credentials. Xcel Energy's plan to install approximately 730 EV fast chargers in Minnesota, which would make it the largest utility-owned charging system in the country, has sparked opposition from various stakeholders, including the gas station and EV charging industries, the Minnesota Department of Commerce, and consumers. While Xcel hopes to jump-start the slow EV market in Minnesota, critics argue that Xcel's market power as a monopoly utility would crowd out private investment, ultimately slowing EV growth. Over two-thirds of planned lithium-ion battery production in Europe is at risk of being delayed, scaled down or cancelled, due to American subsidies and slow permitting processes, warns a report by Transport & Environment. Without EU-wide financial support to scale up battery production, Europe will not be able to satisfy its battery demand in 2030 and will need to import from foreign rivals. Electric vehicle charging infrastructure is vulnerable to cyberattacks, according to cybersecurity experts. There are concerns that the rush to create a comprehensive charging infrastructure could come at the expense of cybersecurity.
