A (relatively) in-depth analysis of British, singer/songwriter Judie Tzuke in just under thirty minutes.Judie Tzuke was born Judie Myers in 1956. She is best known for her 1979 hit 'Stay with Me till Dawn', which reached number 16 on the UK singles chart.Tzuke's family relocated from Poland to England in the 1920s, and changed their surname from Tzuke to Myers, like other Jewish families from Eastern Europe. Judie preferred the original family name, using it at school and later as her stage name. She was educated in the visual arts, performing arts, and music, performing in folk clubs from the age of 15. Tzuke's career as a solo artist began in 1977, when she signed to Elton John's Rocket Record Company. Her first single on Rocket, 'For You', was released in 1978.In 1982 Tzuke headlined the Glastonbury Festival and in 1996 she launched her own label, Big Moon Records. In 2008 she released her sixteenth studio album, Songs 2. The same year, she co-wrote four tracks with Morcheeba, and featured as a vocalist on two tracks from their Dive Deep album. In 2018, Tzuke joined with Beverley Craven and Julia Fordham to record 'Safe', a song that she had written with Beth Nielsen Chapman. An album was released titled Woman to Woman, together with a tour of the same name in the same year. From October 2024 to January 2025, Tzuke took her 'Jude The Unsinkable Tour' to a selection of dates around the UK. She was joined by T.I.G.Y, comprising of Bailey Tzuke and Matt Racher who opened for her as well as accompanied her during her set. In this episode I am in conversation with Dr. Andrew Webber.I hope you enjoy the podcast and do leave feedback if you like what you have heard.Mathew Woodall

In today's conversation, we sit down with the truly unique, John Rhino Edwards, AKA Freddie's Dad. He's best known for being the bassist in the rock group Status Quo but has also toured with the likes of Dexys Midnight Runners, Kim Wilde, and Judie Tzuke to name a few. We met up on a sunny Tuesday afternoon in a hotel in London, the day after he'd got back from a show in Bilbao. We'd also like to add that, while this episode might suggest otherwise, Rhino really isn't a violent person and we don't condone fighting in any way. Today you'll hear stories about how he got his place in Status Quo, what got them into the Guinness world records, the origin story of his nickname Rhino and why Freddie ended up in a helicopter.  This is RHINO from STATUS QUO coming up on 'Meet At The Hotel Bar'! Prepare for a stampede...

After her second album Fires (2005) Nerina Pallot was hot property. She kissed the frog that is ‘fame' in the music industry, with a BRIT nomination, Ivors nomination and even an appearance on Top Of The Pops. Never quite comfortable with that, her third album The Graduate (2009) was an uneven affair that failed to keep the spotlight shining Nerina's way. That turned out for the better…When I heard her new record, the ironically titled I Don't Know What I'm Doing, I found myself instantly liking it but sensing that the record would grow on me as well - an album that will keep on revealing new depths. In that respect, I wasn't surprised to hear that the inspiration behind it was the ‘proper pop' tunes of the 70s: Kate Bush, Stevie Wonder, ABBA, Barry Gibb, Judie Tzuke, Leo Sayer, Carole King and Elkie Brooks! The album is awash in 70s style keyboards and real tunes. If only that Late Night Taxi Ride radio show of mine would ever get off the ground, Nerina's brand of grown-up pop would feature rather more prominently than it currently does on the UK radio! Or even USA radio for that matter. “I got flown out tons of times by American labels who thought that Everybody's Gone To War would be a big radio record, but how do you sell an album that is nothing like the single? I'm not a straightforward sell. I never have been. But that's where I'm happy”. Her relatively low profile these days is more a frustration for her fans than Nerina herself, however. Like so many other artists of longevity, Pallot has long since eschewed the attachment to such industry accolades, but her connection to the fan base seems unbreakable:“I have a strong contract with my audience. The fans are a big part of my records - I want them to feel like at least 3 or 4 songs connect with them - the rest is gravy”. It's been a circuitous route each time to get my records made, so I don't want to let them down”. That frame of mind is what  makes a Nerina Pallot album such a treat, and her live shows the best kept secret in town. Good for those lucky, loyal fans. Support the show

Currently part of the incredible Woman To Woman project with Beverley Craven, Julia Fordham and Rumer , Judie Tzuke is not only one of the finest writers the UK has ever produced but also has one of the most distinctive voices full of warmth and believability. Here she talks about her beginnings writing poems which turned into songs forming the basis of her albums initially signed to Elton John's label with whom she toured with - yes that famous US show where he dressed as Donald Duck. Her seminal classic "Stay With Me Til Dawn" sounds as beautiful today as it ever did with its signature string arrangement by legend Paul Buckmaster. I have been lucky enough to write with her on songs I count to be my very best including "If (When You Go)" (recorded both by herself and with Beverley and Julia for the project) which has the loveliest story behind it and "Maybe This Christmas" with the truly breathtaking Harriet as well as writing classics with Lucie Silvas, Tom Baxter, Morcheeba and BT . She also talks about her battle with stage fright and how losing her voice on a show became the remedy for it as well as how surviving cancer and Covid have made her more fearless than ever. I've said it before, she's an angel, like a real life one. She's changed so many peoples lives, is always helping and nurturing new talent and continues to be one of my favourite writers and humans. I absolutely adore her and know you will too after listening to this. Last Wednesday afternoon, 23-year-old school teacher Ashling Murphy was killed while jogging along the banks of the Grand Canal in Tullamore, Ireland. The case has shocked the nation and revived concerns about women's safety in public spaces in Ireland and the UK. We speak to Irish Times reporter Jade Wilson and veteran women's rights activist Ailbhe Smyth. In 1969 Muriel McKay was kidnapped after being mistaken for Rupert Murdoch's wife. The story dominated front pages for weeks, and hundreds of police worked the case. After 40 days Arthur and Nizamodeen Hosein were arrested, and later jailed, but Muriel was never found. We hear about the re-opening of the case from Muriel's daughter, Dianne McKay. Woman to Woman is the all-star group founded in 2018 and features musical artists Beverley Craven, Julia Fordham and Judie Tzuke. They now have a new album and a new collaborator, singer-songwriter Rumer. We catch up with member Julia Fordham. We discuss the life of Mary Ward the 17th century Catholic nun who actively championed education for girls - and even spent time in prison for her cause. Now, almost four hundred years after her death, Mary Ward's legacy lives on via a network of almost 200 Mary Ward schools worldwide – including St Mary's School in Cambridge. She is considered the first sister of feminism and a pioneer of female missionary work. Sister Jane Livesey and Charlotte Avery headmistress at St Mary's school for girls tell us about her life and legacy. We hear from Jo Richards from British Wheelchair Basketball about the start of the British Wheelchair Basketball Women's Premier League which begins on Saturday live on the BBC. The league is the first of its kind worldwide, and the UK's first women's professional Para-sport league. What do you remember about ‘ladette culture'? It was a term first coined in 1994 to describe young women who behaved boisterously, assertively and loved a drink. Some considered it a feminist movement – allowing girls to act ‘just like men'. Comedian Shappi Khorsandi – who grew up in the 90's – explores ladette culture in her new comedy stand up tour. Professor Angela Smith teaches Language and Culture at the University of Sunderland. Shappi and Angela both join Anita to discuss the significance of this time, and how our attitudes have changed. On 17th November 2019, Grey Atticus Fox was born, nine weeks early to author Georgina Lucas and her partner Mike. Weighing just three and a half pounds, he was taken to the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit and put on a ventilator. But less than two weeks later, a devastating prognosis left Georgina and Mike with an agonising decision of whether to withdraw Grey's life support. Georgina writes movingly about this experience and its aftermath in her memoir If Not For You. Woman to Woman is the all-star group founded back in 2018 and features musical artists Beverley Craven, Julia Fordham and Judie Tzuke. Now the trio are back with a new album, new tour and a new collaborator- singer-songwriter Rumer. 2020's been a terrific year for 10cc fans, with exciting releases of Consequences, Modesty Forbids and Muscle Memory, and two books by Liam Newton and now Peter Kearns. Paul and Sean really enjoyed our conversation with the affable author, professional musician and New Zealander. The new tome is an excellent complement to 'The Worst Band in the World'. It catalogues every song, chronologically, that 10cc and Godley & Creme released officially between Hotlegs and Mirror Mirror. As a musician, Kearns discusses each track with a good deal of musical and lyrical analysis, as well as some interesting back stories and great insights. He tackles much of the material from different angles to where we've come from on the podcast; we learned a lot! Graham Gouldman and Kevin Godley helped with the research too, which gives the work added accuracy. Befitting the 160-page length, the author packs his prose tightly; there is a lot of detail here - some songs and albums much more than others of course.  The style is concise and punchy, which makes this a quick-fire and very informative reading experience. Occasionally, we glimpse Peter's own preferences. You can really taste the admiration he has for some of the four-piece's more off-the-wall work, particularly L and Freeze Frame. It's well worth the price tag! Peter's had varied and interesting musical and writing careers.  He's collaborated with Judie Tzuke and Norwegian Prog-rock band Gazpacho among many others, and has produced two other books in the 'on track...' series, featuring the work of Elton John and (soon to be published) Joni Mitchell. We recommend his album 'No Such Thing as Time', from which you'll hear a few tasty clips on the podcast. He gave us a typical succinct and spot-on appraisal of 10cc's historical standing: '10cc and Godley & Creme were artists who cared about music and cared about their contribution to it. They worked through a time period where their commitment to quality steadily increased, against the background of a mainstream that was moving in the opposite direction.'  Hear hear, Peter. 'On track... 10cc and Godley & Creme' is available worldwide, and is well worth your shekels.
